Oh, right, the Parasyte author. I've been meaning to read that one. Sounds like it would be better. Kind of surprised they haven't taken a crack at adapting it yet, since Parasyte was so popular.
Actually, speaking of Monster, I kind of feel like Urasawa does something similar, though maybe not always for themes specifically. A lot of things are black and white there, and while it's not as bad for a few of the mains as time goes on, he'll do this thing with his characters where they're even relatively normal or semi-relatable, then he'll use every trick in the book to make them into the most malicious conniving assholes (or whatever else was needed) without any subtlety or buildup. It's like a switch was flipped to maximize the impact of the scene at hand, but it feels kind of off as a whole. I especially felt this in the earlier episodes, so it was a rough start.
So I think you would say the sword death is the peak of ridiculous scenes in the manga? Bridge scene is definitely the most absurd thing in the anime so far.
Oh, okay, so that's why you were singling those Urasawa titles out. I don't know anything about the author of Orb, so I wonder if those manga were an influence. Not sure with Japan, but I especially hear about 20thCB a lot. lol, basement arc is an interesting comparison.
yeah, The fake suspense is why it reminded me of monster.
gsar says it didn't reach till the part in the second spoiler apparently, the jolanta arc. I guess showing the inquisitors as all mean and degenerate is not okay, need to put in <catholic humanity> moment now.
Just that the heliokyo/scieneKyo does feel more eerie and magical than the majo kyo in re zero which feels considerably more tame, so the supernatural feel comes from there at times XD The heliocentrists feel a bit like a cult right out of berserk or smthn. you dropped the anime on ep 1, but there's a scene you definitely have to see in ep 5 17 min mark for a couple mins (it was pointed out to me by gsar), it is executed in such a way in the anime that even blows monster out of the water.
Here you have it time stamped XD:-

lol at the meme btw, it's hilarious.
Wow, it just gets more and more bizarrely hilarious.
Ah, I don't feel like it's that understandable (though I haven't seen the full arc with Badeni). Anyone who isn't a moron would give up there and try again later, when given such an opportunity. Reckless would have been snooping around for the book, given the situation, which he was already doing; opening it, after such a stern warning, knowing you won't be able to absorb much of anything given the circumstances and will pay a severe price for basically nothing, is more like insanity. I would have preferred that the monk caught him reading and simply punished him over what happened (which is believable enough, since he was already beating the hell out of him before). Most of the characters are so painfully exaggerated and stupidly passionate and make a point of eventually becoming true to their ideals and licking their wounds in a smug way. "If you open that book, I'll take your eyes." "Fuck you. I'm opening the book." Him getting a line from it at all is just convenience. Nah, I can't take it seriously. This kind of thing is something I have an intense hatred for. Easiest 1/10 for me in a while.
Okay, it looks more believable in the manga for the fire part. I think the anime suffers from time distortion, which sometimes happens with the way they have to cram the episodes, and makes it feel like everything could have very easily been destroyed, though most everything about the script says that he saved the bulk of it.
Yes, agreed, but I find the execution to be garbage throughout. I found the Rafal thing unbearably stupid, and they just copy Socrates as justification, when reasonably the boy could have accomplished more in secret regarding heliocentrism than probably anything Socrates could have done in Athens at that point (plus, he actively has students he actually directly influenced, meaning a more literal "passing of the torch," a luxury Rafal does not have). Going by the story, it feels more appropriate and meaningful with Socrates. But the author has to do his cheap passing on the torch and quote mining thing to force the idea. Plus, I feel kind of bad for Hubert, given he had just sacrificed himself for Rafal not long ago, lmfao. Feels awkward as hell. Now I'm wondering if I imagined that line, though. But even if what I recall were correct, that would only be a partial motivation at best, with the influence being the greater reason, so I guess it doesn't matter. I think a lot of what I'm saying is bad here in Orb is not inherently bad, it's just the author executes most things in a ham-fisted way. Everything about the drama feels rough and unfinished to me. Like it needs more crafting and smoothing out.
Right, I'm probably not going to bother with anything else by Urasawa. Dislike his Pluto adaptation/remix too. Well, at least Orb is shorter than Monster and consistently more hilarious, which makes it better.
