I dunno if it's because I feel off today but after watching Devilman I just don't get where it's overwhelming praise is coming from. It felt way too rushed, plot escalation coming out of nowhere and an over abundance of sex that seemed to have no real use, aside from a handful that felt like a necessary inclusion. It felt like they were trying to use the shock factor of the gore and boobies to mask the show's issues.
The sound track and soundcloud rappers were great though.

For me I love it cause it shows how messed up humanity is. How selfish we can become in desperate times, how people like to shift blame. The corruption of humanity itself, plus for me I just love gore, violence and all that stuff. Plus I mean I just love the ending, instead of some typical hero saves the day ending everything goes wrong and you see that Ryo still has a bit of humanity left after he realises he has killed Akira. The music, gore, characters and story for me are what I love about the show and just plus the animation style is so cool

Anime is opinions thing. Ask y someone like anime it's like ask him why he love some kind of food. Any anime fan has his fav and the ones he didn't like at all. Fight on it is time waste for everyone in my opinion.

I see exactly where you are coming from. I enjoyed the show but only whilst I was watching it, looking back on it I can admit that it wasn't really that good. It was all mindless violent fun.

I do really like the ending though. The way God punished satan was with love.

It's basically a bastardized version of Devilman.
It's a remake, something we don't see often in anime, done by Yuasa (love him, btw) an excellent anime director that until that point never really bothered with already established IPs nor with sequels, yet because of that sweet Netflix money he decided to try adapting an already popular franchise but with his style instead.

The result is something a true Devilman fan wouldn't want but something a Yuasa fan would.
The people praising DC are pretty much Yuasa fanboys.

The fact that Yuasa's other Netflix anime, Japan Sinks, is rated 6 (his lowest ever) is testament that he's not only losing his touch, but that he's becoming a greedy old man.

Sad that Watanabe seems to be heading in the same direction as well. What a shame. Two of my most beloved anime directors.

Yuasa also used cheap ways to try and make you emotional but completely failed, he introduced the mom out of nowhere for one episode just to kill her off.
At that point I was rolling my eyes. Is this really Yuasa? Keep in mind that character isn't in the OVAs nor in the Manga, that's 100% Yuasa falling into generic anime tearjerker territory.

TL;DR: DC was never meant to have the Yuasa style, thank Netflix for corrupting legendary directors.

Edit: I must say that I actually liked it? Not as a good show, sure, but the schlock, the bastardization and ridiculousness of it were actually fun. I gave it a 6/10. It is fun. Just don't take it seriously and don't take it as a real Devilman adaptation. I guess it's a "so-bad-it's-good" product?

Whew we got some real essays in here that I'm not gonna read.

It's a niche type of anime that if it's what you're looking for, will scratch that itch perfectly and in a way no other show can.

Unique visuals, one of the best soundtracks ever, sex, drugs, and violence. Hell yeah brother sign me up.

This anime is a joke, lol. The animation quality is crap(can't understand why some ppl actually think it's great 💀) The animation couldn't bring out the terrifying aspect of the devils, didn't scare me at all.

As if it wasn't obvious enough the entire story was rushed. The revealing of the devils came too quickly. Cmon, I know yall thought that it would've came at the last ep of s1 then the war would've continued at s2...dont lie to me that's what yall thought but no..the war started wayy sooner than it should've taken.

What really bothered me was how akira got all sad and sobbing over someones death and literally gets over it the next day. I can't help mention this but why the fuck did we have to see Akira masterbate and holy shit the amount of white stuff that came out 😳... creepy asf.

yea seems weird, i mean first you start to like it because its so bizarre and unusual but the animation overall is garbage and i feel like the sex and violence is really just to distract people from the fact that it's full of flaws

the characters were great and it probably has one of the best endings in anime and manga, soundtrack and animation are also great, a show might be for others but not for you it doesn't matter how much people tell you about why they lvoe it your opinion probably wont change, also its not like that many people love it, i've seen more people saying it shouldn't exist than people praising it, it might feel like it is universally loved because some anitubers sometimes talk about it but at least mal doesnt love it that much

I agree, I don't think it's as grandiose as people say it is. What I hate about DMCB fans the most is how they stamp it as this revolutionary artistic and philosophical masterpiece, although in reality it's not all that. Quit trying to be sophisticated when you're actually not.

Probably was hyped so much because the original manga was very influential back in the 70s and this is the best proper animation they’ve gotten for it.
I personally liked it but I already had an attachment to the characters from the manga lol

I think it came back when there was a noticeable drought of really dark and gritty anime. The sort of which was more commonly released during the late 80's and early 90's.

That and I'm pretty sure it was one of the very first Netflix original anime that was actually worth watching. So those 2 factors probably overblew its popularity quite a bit. I still think it was a great show, but not anime of the year 2018 material.

I think it was mostly new age anime fans, people who didn’t really watch anime, and people who like edgy things we’re the ones who kinda put it on a pedestal. It’s definitely worth watching, I gave it a 7/10. It was weird, violent, good looking, and good ost with a decent plot, but that was really about it.

STORYLINE and CHARACTERS are the main reason it's loved by all. Great soundtracks are a reason too but Akira and Ryo are 2 great MCs. The storyline is just top tier. The last 2eps turned the opinions of the people upside down. If you are not satisfied with the anime read the manga it has 8rating with 50chs.

Long time Nagai fan here, Crybaby is in spirit close adaptation of the manga, and the translation to modern times was very neatly done. It is a remake because so many anime and manga were inspired by Devilman, adapting it plainly would lead to people thinking it's generic when it is actually the original. (Well, it happened anyway, but whatever). It's certainly far from being a cashgrab. Don't asumme that your opinion is identical to that of the whole fanbase.
You all need to watch Nami.

There was way too many shock factors. I dont understand how people can be so obsessed w it. It had more shock factor than Akame Ga Kill the way they killed main characters off. The way that they killed Miki was way over the top for shock. Plus the plot felt super rushed. I gave it a 6 because ill admit it did have me hooked the first 7 episodes but after that it kind of lost me. :l

Yeah, and Mirai Nikki's got a score of 7.47 lmao.
This is MAL dude, anything below an 8 screams 'not worth your time'. Besides, a score of 8 doesn't exactly mean people love it. Which is in direct contrast to the OP proclaiming this show gets overwhelming praise.

Honestly, the plot shift took that some kind of sudden turn in the manga as well. Everything is going fine, then all of a sudden next chapter the demons are attempting mass possessions leading to them dying mutated in the street just for Zenon to appear and declare wat on humanity which sets off the events of the real story.

The show is considered a flawed master piece and it is very deserving of both parts of the designation.
What makes the series a masterpiece is because it tells a relevant and humanistic story about fear and love that still holds to this day. The execution of that is also mostly excellent in that there is not one moment of dialogue or scene in the show that doesn't serve a purpose. Even the massive amounts of nudity and sexual content at the first half are part of the various character stories being told.

What makes it flawed is that the show is short and many plot threads that could have been expanded upon for a better understanding of the characters motivations and world were left to subtle visual hints. Then there is the questionable animation quality in spots and the overly cartoony moments of others.

These are the reasons why the show scores low but is often praised. A lot of people struggle with the sex and gore as well. Not a whole lot of people understand it because they aren't looking beneath the surface of what they are being shown and this show is all symbolism and the underlying message.

I think it is never unworthy to say this, but people CAN actually like whatever they want. With that said, yes, this is garbage lol. I have no problem with people liking it, specially when it rellies so much in "shock factor", but we have to admit that this is objectively a bad show. I can't tell about the manga and how faithfull an adaptation it is. The truth is, it doesn't even matter.

On the technical aspects, I have to recognice it has a good soundtrack, nothing really remarkable anyway (except for the rap parts, obviously).
And I think that's all. Not even the animation was well executed, and this is the main reason I'm writting this. Never mistake originality with quality. Because this anime is, in many senses, really original, or at least it feels like that because of its unrestricited amount of violence and nudity, dreadful development and tragic ending. Certainly, it is far from "conventional" anime. But that doesn't mean, in any sense, it is well done.
Focusing on the visual aspect, it does look "different", and I'm giving it a point for that, but except for some battle scenes the animation itself is so stiff it makes me think this was all done in a week or something. The details in draw where just nonexistent whenever we didn't see a close-up of the characters. Aside from the proportions being completely messed up. You can say it is Yuasa's style... well... it is my nephew's style too. That's not an excuse for being unskilled (not saying Yuasa is unskilled, but in this case it is).
If we talk about characters, most of them have no personality defined and no development at all. And if any, it is easily disposed without any explanation. Last episode gave us great example of it. (Are you reading this without watching the whole show? Why?) With Miki's death, Akira decided to kill everyone near while screaming "Damn you, mortals"... Right after that he is on the human side... He literally saw everyone he loved die by "humans nature" (does anyone think this is an accurate representation of human nature?) and still, the next morning, he will fight for them... WTF?? If that's the best character in the show then there's nothing left to say.
I prefer not to talk about storytelling as I haven't read the manga, but I will say this. Tragedy, as well as originallity, is not a synonym of quality. You may like the shock of it, but, again, it doesn't mean it is a great work.

Overall, whilst I recognize how bold this show was and how original it looked, I'm giving it a 3/10... and maybe I'm being generous.

For me, it was almost perfect. It was clearly lacking on animation and a bit of plot hole in starting few episodes, but the ending was worth it. I feel sorry for people who found out about this show through MAL and didn't even gave it a try.

Also the soundtrack carries really hard throughout the series.

I didn't like the first couple of episodes but near the end, show started to grow on me. Artistic choices, edgy nature of the show gave me a different kind of emotion. Still, I can understand why people doesn't like it that much. Pacing was too fast, animation style didn't suit the show that much etc. My enjoyment is coming solely from personal enjoyment.
