THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
Looks like Suzune's not the only one to be influenced from the legendary idol Akari, Rena is too somehow (she's like Mana's younger sister Kotono).

A round of introductions as idol shows tend to start being safe with, in this case, the idol audition reality show where Sumipanda gives a grueling down right from the get-go, starting off with a 3-group round performance theme between singing (Suzune and Rena), instrumentals (Uta, Mako, Shiori) and dancing (Ao, Nagisa, Nodoka, Hiromi) based on past seasons' songs. Pretty brutal to hit 100k Yells, but it's doable while hospitality is all covered under helper Sunny.

At the same time, let the comparisons between this and Idoly Pride begin! Because this show could NOT be more original enough.

The short dispute between Suzune and Rena really gives me equal vibes to between Sakura and Kotono. Making things even more blatantly equal is the fact that both Rena and Akari are in the same family of all things, and Akari's traffic accident robbed Rena of a close older sister (the EXACT same way that Kotono would succeed the deceased Mana). But thankfully this show's drama is not quite overblown as compared to the former, and is a clear rival's battle between the both of them, even if they have to work together for group efforts going forward.

When it comes to the actual reality show, it kinda makes you feel like you're watching Vtubers dancing that are ripped directly from mobile games, especially for Suzune and Rena's dance segment (even their outfits are a clear inspiration from Sunny Peace and Moon Tempest). So at least the format is what sets Selection Project apart from Idoly Pride, but to be honest IMVHO, the latter's VENUS Program is NO different, because both feel like reality shows at best.

Everybody's gonna know that both Suzune and Rena will *supposedly* make it all the way through to the Final 2, so if they do (and earning 100k Yells is easy peasy), I'm not surprised at all.

Now it depends on the other girls to match their "statuses", and see who will be eliminated next episode.

9 finalists have finally gathered from all over the country with the goal of making their professional idol debut... Ofc, They didn't get along right away, it was just that they had a little problem but that was natural because they had just met. Training is hard so one mistake doesn't matter, they are a team but it should be clear that they are rivals.Their performance was pretty good, I like those two members.... Suzu x Rena :") It looks good but looks like it will be tense in the last scene.

The group of 9 idols which is divided into units of 4, 3, and 2 sounds so familiar. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) And how about the unit name? QU4RTZ, A・ZU・NA, and Diver Diva could be great names. lol

I've got some feeling that the one who is in the panda costume is somewhat an uncle. 😂
Suzune and Rena's performance was amazing, even they haven't practiced together at all.
This will be the first time for the Selection Project that everyone will be able to pass the first round.

I'm definitely still gonna like the show just because I'm a huge fan of idol anime, but this is now far too similar to Idoly Pride.

We already has the light Blonde/Brown haired lead with the weak heart and the dark haired, serious rival, but the fact that Rena is also the sister of Akari who tragically died in an accident...

Like you'd think this anime and Idoly Pride would have had to be part of the same multimedia project, but theyre not....

Episode 3 takes an interesting place where the Idols who have won the previous round went to some place to train themselves and have a bit of relax. Then this round, it was a team-based audition and I love the duo between Suzu and Rena although Rena is still her cold-self and considers Suzu as her rival since this idol anime is generally about being the best idol and there can be only one in the end so pretty much idols involved are considered as rivals to each other and other than that, hopefully Suzu and Rena get along better in later episodes. Animation wise, the use of 3D CGI were shown when Suzu and Rena were performing Butterfly Bright? Not sure what it's called but the animation wise is actually pretty good and their performance was pretty amazing too. Now the song in particular, what I'm mostly hyped about is that I actually ENJOYED THE ED "Only one Yell" especially the chorus part where all the idols were singing, they synced so perfectly and this near-end chorus lyric (english translated) "Till I reach the end of my dream" is something that I thought implies to Suzu's character since she wants to becomes an idol like Akari and she strives her best to do it even there were barriers during the "Only one yell" round in Episode 1 but in Episode 2, her one friend who won the round in Episode 1, was kind enough to give Suzu the opportunity to enter the next stage with the other Idols who won the previous round and as a result, Suzu didn't give up and continue to strive her goal becoming an idol. This also implies to myself to cherish what I want to be in life even if there are some barriers, but striving to accomplish your dreams is what keeps us living and have the courage to make ourselves being on track to becoming a successful person one day. Overall, looking forward to the next episode because I see some tension going on when the panda costume guy appears out of the blue :0

The CGIs this episodes are GREAT, did not expect that Onee-chan twist really lol. Just also want to point out, that these casts are relatively new to the Industry and they are performing so well. Looking forward for the next episiodes, I'm rooting for this anime so much.

+ Food for thought... am I the only one who resembles Rena with Kousaka Reina from Hibike Eupho everytime?

Sumipanda somehow got to creepy to creepier with the in flesh appearance.

Hope that flashback doesn't mean Akari committed suicide.

Was impressive to see how invested the production is on the performances.

I think the Selection Project succeeded in noting what Idoly Pride lacks in terms of Animation-Wise and trying to prove how full 3D CGI Animation isn't always bad (this makes me remember Bandori and D4DJ). Again, this is a great Dōga Kōbo.

But,
It still can't cover the bankruptcy of their creativity in compiling stories and building character profiles.
Almost everything of these aspects is copy-pasted from Idoly Pride, even down to the concept of Suzune and Rena's appearance.

Amazing performance.

The two aren't doing well at the start but they already got a huge number of points compared to others.

Don't like how too unfriendly Rena is.

I feel like they might end up as a whole idol group instead of selecting only one.

The group forming depending on what they prefer between dancing, instrumentals or singing is a pretty interesting but now they need to acquire a certain amount of points to be selected for the next round, Rena's past with her sister being the legendary idol and died is the exact same as Idoly Pride to be honest but why not, they did a great performance with Suzune sure that they'll get all the points they need but not sure for the other ones

I really was not liking Rena at the start of this episode, I get she only really sees them all as rivals and wants to do this all on her own, but she was so unnecessarily rude- especially for someone who's trying to be an idol, and even after that bear thing told them that there's cameras everywhere. If she wasn't Akari's sister and footage of her acting like that got out she definitely wouldn't of made it past round one. And given how smart she's supposed to be you really would not expect that from her.

And according to the post ending scene, if one of the units is 100% not getting through I hate to say it but I hope its the dancers, I like Mako and Shiori way too much for them to go next episode.
However I kinda feel like the chances of all 3 units making it through are pretty high lmao, it wouldn't be shocking

Fun episode, starting off with Rena making sure everyone knew she wasn't there to make friends

No surprise she was revealed to be Akari's little sister (nice execution, not as much drama as IDOLY PRIDE, but there was less weight to the issue)

The song Suzu Rena sang was so beautiful TvT

Highly doubt all 3 sub-groups won't go through (9 member idol unit, I can see you from the very first episode)

Great episode! Definitely is very similar to idoly pride though. So Rena is Amasawa Akari’s little sister then. Kinda surprising. The CGI used in Suzune and Rena’s performance was honestly pretty good too. Seems they will break the 100,000 votes barrier! Looking forward to the next episode!

Ahh the cringe, the cringe that pierces my soul, please stop. Forgive me folks but I still haven't passed that point of not cringing while watching an idol anime, and Selection Project ain't helping matters for me.

Well Rena...stop being a bitch for once. I can't take the relationship between her and Suzune, it's just so painful to watch. Even at the end of a good performance, there's no ounce of respect, just stop please. Also reveal reveal, Rena is Akari's sister, I mean they look similar so it didn't surprise me much. And yo that heart be...

Now that Suzune and Rena moves on to the next stage, the dancing quartet and K-On (trio version) is now going to compete to eliminate each other, I'm rooting for the latter but who knows. And it was an easy win for our two who's not really a team, pretty much a vote brigade from those old Akari fans. If I can compare this to what's happening on MAL now, it feels like those F↑↓↑@b fan-

So Rena turns out of be the younger sister of the legendary idol who died young in a car accident. THIS IS FUCKING IDOLY PRIDE. Are they even trying to be remotely original?

Other than that, the story was mediocre at best. Seems like they were trying to build tension and drama between Suzune and Rena, but the whole plot seem to have just went to a resolution without much explanation.

I was kind of hoping Doga Koba would not do a CG dance performance, but I guess even Doga Kobo has to use CG for that. It's understandable, but a little disappointing. Also, the idea of Suzune/Rena doing that performance without any join practice is just unrealistic. Remember that Suzune was the klutz that fell while singing by herself, but now she can just do joint choreographic dance in one shot like that?

I hate to drop this show, because I love Doga Kobo and Hiramaki, but I think this will be the last episode of Selection Pride for me.

I feel like I am one of the "lucky" ones that didn't see Idoly Pride earlier in the year, cause all I am seeing for the past three episodes is that the two are really similar.

So I didn't expect that Rena would be the little sister of the late Akari and it seems that the community is already voting for them cause of the fact that she's Akari's sister... A bit unfair. Can also safely say that Rena is definitely not my favorite character from the show, far from it. Take a shot every time she says "We're rivals".

That aside, the performance was actually good and I didn't think that CG was gonna look this damn great. Somehow I had lower expectations for that. They smashed and Suzune managed to stay on both her feet. First team to reach the 100k mark... still seems a bit unfair towards the other two teams with Akari bias.

but hey at least we now know who the main focus is gonna be on (even though the alternative cover art kinda gave it away). Have to say big F for Rival-chan, one of those "only famous because of famous relative" situations lel. also ngl that CGI was pretty good. Kinda reminds me of No Doubt In Us, it actually worked quite well so gg

Ah shit there it is, that wonderful cgi. It is a little less jarring that what other idol anime have produced, but dang I guess there's no escaping cgi when it comes to idol anime. Was crossing my fingers that this would be a miraculous first exception.

Will slap a 10/10 on this if it randomly because a horror anime. It's a group of young girls living together on a huge compound with seemingly little staff and what looks like no security. Plus we have a psycho-looking panda creep just freely roaming about. There's some real potential here boys.

Just wondering what the rest of the episodes will be consisting of, because the next episode, the 4th one, is probably going to be the showdown between the other two groups, and since one entire group gets eliminated, there's only going to be 4 or 5 girls left. We'll probably know the winner halfway through the season lol.

I find this anime annoying but it's strangely entertaingly-annoying so gonna keep this on the watching list!

still enjoying this a lot music is so good and the visuals are great but god damn is this just straight up Idoly Pride 2 lol only difference is it's a reality tv show , i was like no way are they gonna make the cool type be the younger sister of the late Akari at least her cold arc seemed to have gotten better by the end ,hopefully the gears start changing so i can't stop thinking everything this does is just like Iodly Pride D: whose gonna be the first to go

also the GCI was actually good? it caught me off guard because i don't normally see Doga use CG for dancing but i think it's up there with lovelive

feel like all the other girls are put at a very unfair disadvantage for this first round compared to the duo but at least Rena wants to earn her efforts

Like this episode a lot!!! B.B is so my taste in music, I believe its something within the genre of kawaii future bass? (Not sure, not really a music expert T_T)

At first, I thought the CGs were choppy when the song title came up, but then........wow!!

That CG dance performance will redefine idol anime from here on, setting a new bar for upcoming ones XD Hoping Nijigasaki Season 2 will be as good as this if not better, since Njigasaki Season 1 song performance scenes are already very dope

What blow my mind is that most of them here in Serepro are actually newbies both as voice actress and as idols (except for Suzune's VA who voiced some characters before)

Now I am excited to see what the rest of the members have to offer.

I’m in the same exact boat lol

This episode was great, the reality TV show has begun and the girls got put into different groups based on different themes, and I kinda figured that Rena was Akari’s sister, but I love her pairing with Suzu despite the cold start they had, and their performance was AMAZING, song was good, the CG was good, loved the dancing and the outfits, they just blew it out of the water. The other girls are up against behemoths lol, I hope they can pull through, I’m willing to bet both groups make it to the next round.

I also like that the ED is a different version of “Only One Yell” because I do really like that song and it fits as an ED. Also, Sumipanda really giving me Monokuma vibes now with how he’s being kinda creepy lol, why do I feel like this will turn into a killing game.

Suzune and Rena killed it with their performance of Butterfly Bright even without practising together. I like this duo, they look beautiful especially when they were performing together with that outfit.

So we learned here that Rena is the little sister of Akari, I'm hoping this is not like Idolly Pride where it will be revealed later on that Suzune was a recipient of Akari's heart.

Too early to tell but I have a feeling that all nine of them will be forming an idol unit at the end of the series.

Ayy the supposed-to-be a reality show began competing with a group round? Nice first challenge, right? The duo singer actually already seal their victory. I already predict it since the beginning. The other actually come as a surprise for me, especially with the little one, but 'a Master'. Really? A band? Guitar? How? Well, next episode for that, right?

But, as expected, there's someone that need to pushed them over the edge to be able to sell their reality into the tv show. However, with that 'twist', that almost make me fall from the chair with the obvious 'dejavu', while watching this and laugh as hard as possible, they were reaching the peak quickly. No need rehearsal bs like other, no need another shot take, they just needed a one freakin performance in such an instant way to seal the deal.

Lmao, bruh, what? ngl, the plot really make me laugh hard. But, the performance actually pretty nice visually, as expected from Doga, never let me down. Still, with how the plot progress, i feel like its just too much with the similarities. If the other girls bring the same vibe as you-know-what, dude, idk what shall i say in the next thread. Also, i do really hope there's a real group that being eliminated for real. But, i should've realise, this show still have a damn long way to finish. So, alright then, maybe not this round, sigh. Lets see next....

I’m relieved to see that I’m not the only one that had the feeling it was giving Idoly Pride vibes. Plus, i’m starting to guess (i don’t read the manga) that Suzune has been cured thanks to Akari’s heart (because yeah she was hosptitalized for her heart) like Mana was. And I don’t really like those clear similarities :(
Plus, in term of the competition I think we all know where this is gonna end. I would have really like to see an anime where idols compete between each others and where there isn’t a main character like a « real » TV reality show

like everyone else says, this is really similar to idoly pride... that being said, people are spoilering too much for others who didn't watch IP yet

i still don't like the anime that much, and probably will like it even less if they start kicking girls out (which is what this anime is supposedly all about...) but the songs are nice to listen to, so i'll probably keep watching

A Post-episode 3 Selection Project Rant

I want to open this rant with a general statement. I’m a big fan of reality TV competitions like Survivor and Big Brother. When I heard there would be an Idol Reality TV anime, I was over the moon. I’ve had my reservations from the start but its this episode where the cracks are really starting to show. Full disclosure, I doubt I will drop this, but I will be very critical of it starting now.

-Rant p1 This is a Competition

First lets talk competition and stakes. Having a team competition, win or go home style, is a terrible way to open up the final 9 from a TV perspective. It's good for the show because it can flesh out its large cast quickly without eliminating anyone but it is terrible for a TV viewing audience in universe. There is no way that they let 2-4 contestants drop out in this team round. It makes no sense and would be awful game sense wise. So this round is automatically boring as an audience member because everyone is making it through.

I think the competition would benefit from a 2 strikes and you’re out system. That way, you can be let down by a team but still succeed as an individual. It also works much better for the anime because you can have characters fail but not be out. There are so many benefits to this kind of system.

Also, let's keep in mind these teams aren’t as random as they would initially appear. The producers of the reality TV game are aware of the girls' backgrounds and interests. They know each girl's strengths so you could go as far to say that they hand picked these teams. It's not going to matter since everyone will pass here, just food for thought for the future.

(Disclaimer, the performance was good and ending an ep on a performance is a good choice for the anime, just not for the game)
This middle of the round rehearsal feels so out of left field here. They can just request the cameraman to shoot a promo video for them? Why isn’t every other team jumping on this? I know they mention that if they screw up they could lose yells (audience votes, you need 100,000 of those to progress), um what? No… then you become the underdog and people root for you. Also you aren’t going to lose people who were voting for you if you screw up a promo rehearsal. It just doesn't make a lot of practical sense.

Also don’t get me started on how stupid it is that in all the years of competition they’ve never had every girl get past round 1. Its clearly not always a team round since the girls were surprised by that, so this makes it an even dumber choice from the producer’s side.

-Rant p2 This is a Reality TV Show

Now lets talk about that Reality TV 24/7 coverage we were promised. Um… where is that? Like at one point the mascot says, we can get cameras in here if you girls want but I’m like, why are you not filming them 24/7 and taking whatever footage is usable? Why is this show not structured more like the Reality TV the audience would be seeing? You can capture everything and you said you were going to. Yet you don’t have cameras on the girls while they are planning their dance or eating or anything. We have yet to see cameras play a role and that is a huge missed opportunity along with it being inaccurate to what we were told in episode 2. It feels like the people writing this have only ever watched reality TV and have no idea how the production side functions.

You can see on screen how different Uta is when the cameras are on versus when they are off. That would be a great opportunity to show just how much strain it is putting on her to fake a cheerful personality. But nope, she gets off Scott free despite everything we've been told.

And why don't we get confessionals where we get to hear how the girls are feeling about each other? That would be a great way to build these characters in a natural way and also see how the audience views them so that we can relate to the amount of votes that they get.

-Rant p3 This is an Idol Anime

Ok, finally we can talk character writing. With 9 characters, it's hard to get to everyone, I get that, but they have to do better than this. The only idols I could even give a general idea of personality are, Suzu (main character) Rena (Akari’s sister) and Uta (youngest and programmed doll [which they could do so much more with but they still have time]).

The others are just archetypes to this point and that’s a shame because we spent 70% of episode 2 getting Suzu into the game and just reinforcing her personality. The character writing is average at best but I want so much more. Only time will tell if it gets better over time.

The best Idol shows live and die by their characters and their performances. Selection projects sort of has one of those things but it's severely lacking in the other.

-Rant Final Thoughts after 3 episodes

All my gripes aside, I have the smallest amount of hope for this show. If someone actually gets cut in round 2, I will be ecstatic. But I’m still concerned that we will lose no one and it will just be an idol ensemble show with a twist. Clearly I’m way too invested in this.
