I really like Rika. The front she put up as well as what's behind. The direction, surrealism, themes, symbolism, the visuals. This is just getting more and more engaging all around. There's a lot going on and many posters already pointed out a lot of the interesting stuff going on.

The animation and OSTs were brilliant once again. I like Rika's design and she also have an interesting personality, hope nothing that much bad happen to her. And seriously the sensei is to watch out for, I really want to know what exactly happened between him and Koito and how will Ai deal with him.

I am really curious about those two fabric guys playing shogi. what's their deal?

Also I laughed at,

appearances ARE everything. even the main girl basically admits that she is a friend to Koitus because she is pretty and attractive.

to say otherwise are liars. and Rika is just being honest when she says she doesn't like ugly people. by that extension shaming paedos is the same as lying to oneself.

I know what you're gonna say next and you'd argue the "muh 18 shit"

the tl;dr version: that is a form of censorship. how is it a censorship? see long answer

long answer: I'll use the analogy where lolis = good japanese games and old hags = western censored game trash. if these two are to compete on a level playing field, of course the latter wilil lose without argument. they are losers. so what does losers do being the adults that they are? censorship. because of course they don't want competition. the goddamn western losers who can't compete with the superior jrpg will use old age and treachery as their weapon to defeat the youth and skill. for those who don't know, that's actually a quote that you can google yourself. the sad thing is that topics like this will never be taught in schools for the same reason why 1984 will never be studied at any school setting. because, again, youth and skill will never win against old age and treachery.

if you want the censored, trash product that are old hags that are 18 and higher, be my guest.

also those thin legs of Ai's. that's 50% of the reason why I'm still here.

I can't even articulate how freaking amazing this episode was.
The storyboard on this is so insane, the attention to details.
The low drawing count per frame at moments just to push further the animated storytelling
The amazing OST

Definitely the best show of the season, EASILY. And already the strongest AOTY 2021 contender, just with 3 episodes. Amazing.

May be jumping the gun there haha Aot and JJK then this? Hmmm could be depending how the rest goes because I’m thinking after Aot and JJK Re:Zero would be 3rd best but this is definitely a great series thus far and to have this great show in the middle of a season with great anime sequels, this is a hidden gem but most likely won’t remain hidden by the end!

This coupled with the scene in which Koito stands in the corridor and the teacher walks, without focus, behind her with a smirk on his face, places an off-putting vibe to their relationship. Adding to it this episode, things start looking less favourable.

I wouldn't really call his expression a smirk in that scene. A slight smile, maybe, but being out of focus makes it easy to see things that aren't there. His face is pretty neutral. I think people really just want to see people as bad guys, specially in a male teacher, female student situation. Anime has us thinking every male teacher is a pedo, but the guy could just as easily (and so far leans more heavily towards) be a nice person who thought he was helping a student in a bad situation and never realized how far gone she was already.

I do think he could totally be a terrible person in the end. If so, this guy has the biggest gonads on the planet.

Here's the thing tho, yes this is a trope and yes everybody knows it, including the team working on the anime. If he's not a creep then that is only because this is a red herring and they've decided to actively subvert the trope.
He's essentially getting the Bad Guy Framing 101 here - it's not just the aforementioned scene, it's how he's often shadowed in some way, it's the way we almost never see his entire face, a shot of his eyes here, a smirk there, his hand, his back, it's all very purposefully directed in a way to make us suspicious of him.
Coupled with Ai's clearly negative response to his mere presence and even more so after Rika's comments, the lowkey sexual nature of the bullying Koito was subjected to and then the start of this episode with Rika defending a girl (with the same shade of brown hair as Koito, even) from her own abuser, it all builds a very specific kind of narrative.

And again, none of what i just said it's proof that he is an abuser, but it is proof enough that we're being deliberately led to believe that. The cues are all there, you can't really fault people for seeing what's being put in front of us on purpose.

Fantastic episode. Rika feels like such a real Teen to me. The self centered greediness, the metropolitan flair around her and the mean/open act she puts on, to mask her own insecurities and her vulnerability... Great Character.

All the stuff about looks and how they actually influence your opion on someone is really thought provoking aswell.

Anyone who's saying the Animation is kinda *messy* or whatever is plain crazy xD...This Show looks incredible.

Sidenote: It's kinda scary that it's apparently common knowledge that Junior-Idol could mean *Bedroom-Stuff* in Japanese Society. I like how the Anime gives you this sort of dark-society-trivia every now and then.

This episode was still good! I hope the anime keeps it up. Since Rika weapons were box cutters I think future weapons will all be objects that are used to cope with emotions. Ai fidgets with her pen when she's stressed and rika has resorted to cutting in the past.

Rika’s personality made me headcanon her as someone with borderline personality disorder which is often characterized with unstable moods and relationships, and can also be associated with self destructive habits. I'm glad they showed the brutality of eating disorders since japan culture seems to be pretty harsh to girls being overweight.

This anime so far has been an explosion of unfiltered angst that isn't afraid to jump into sensitive topics. I can see someone being turned off by this, but I’m enjoying each second.

Also some of these post... bruh

I have some more thoughts.

First, when we were introduced to the last pair of egg girls, i had a momentary reaction "oh haha what are the chances of these two just happening to end up together" but I'll always forgive minor contrivances for the sake of a better story so i didn't think much of it at the time. But on a second thought, I think my base assumption about how the gacha system works might've been wrong - see i've been working under the assumption that the egg girls they get are random, which yes, would make the current situation highly improbable. However, there's nothing in the show that actually implies it is random. If anything, it's been proving us the opposite. The two girls Ai had to protect so far were dealing with teacher abuse and loneliness, two topics that are -possibly - close to her. Idols, fans, stalkers, these are things that are completely alien to her but that Rika on the other hand would've been very familiar with and wouldn't you know it, we're explivity told this is her dream. So I'm thinking that the enemies they face and the girls they have to protect might be to an extent tailored to the dreamer?

The other thing is, I'm a bit worried about Rika, somebody with a history of unhealthy coping mechanisms, possibly replacing self harm with egg hunts. Or more like, I think that's a foregone conclusion, I'm more worried about the extent to which this goes. We've been shown how she approaches protecting the egg girls and it's, well, incredibly reckless. Unlike Ai who has mostly been running away then dealing with the core problem, Rika lashes out at everything and yes, her dreamscape - an open field - is already naturally more suited to her approach, but even ignoring that, it's not like he shies away from direct conflict in any way.
And depending on what her reasons for self harming were, these egg hunts might hit a lot of the same notes, from the burst of excitement to putting her life on the line, there's an element of punishment and an alleviation of guilt by helping others. There's physical pain as well as forcing herself to confront other people's nightmares, it's. Basically whichever angle you take, it's easy to see how she could go from cutting to to this.
I don't think she'll stay turned to stone, but I have a feeling that this might not be the last time we see her in trouble.

personally idk which way it's gonna go. I kind of feel like there may have been unrequited love from either Koito or Ai to the other. like if Koito confessed and was rejected and sought the teacher for comfort, which upset Ai. or if Ai confessed and got more jealous that Koito went to the teacher over it. guess we'll just have to see what happens.

If anything I think the unrequited love is most likely between Koito and the teacher. It very well may play out that while he was helping her with her bullying and depression that she began to like the teacher, who then rejected her feelings.

She could possibly have had feelings for Ai, but there really isn't much there to work with. Ai seems to be quite naive in those areas, so I doubt there was any feeling of that manner from her.

yeah that's definitely a possibility too. I also saw some others suggest that Ai may be an unreliable narrator. like we always see Koito and the teacher's interactions from her memories, but maybe her misunderstanding/feelings of regret are making it look worse to us than it actually was.

Oh shit this one actually might be the AOTS for me, everything about this is so beautiful and intriguing. And that teacher is very unsettling, please go away from her house lol. Also I guess their weapons are connected to their own trauma since Rika had a box cutter (which she almost certainly used to cut herself), and Ohto's is a pen so I wonder what that's about. Can't wait for the next episode!

Another episode of fluffiness with a bit of angst. It was interesting to see an episode focusing on Sasaeng (overly obsessed and intrusive fans).

This Rika seems interesting. It's not like she picks friends according to their looks but it's just how she is, I guess she means it in a friendly joking manner, tho it could sound rude to some people. Rika herself is more of a tsundere than Neiru. But really just what kinda dad do you have Rika? Your father gave you a wrong teaching...

It looks like Rika is in bad terms with her mother. Those scratches, I wonder if her mother hits her.

When Rika was taking a bath with her hair tied she looked like Violet Evergarden.

Ai and Neiru bitching about Rika was wholesome XD

About Koito, I don't think she was raped by the teacher but instead it seemed they could've been in a romantic relationship. She did say the other students don't like her cause she gets special care since she's new. It could be that the students bullied her calling her a slut and Koito endured all of it to protect the teacher. Ai is pissed off because Koito didn't tell her anything about the teacher. For Ai it's just super awkward to have that same teacher come over everyday. I don't think the teacher is eyeing on Ai in that kinda way but instead it could be that he's just worried about Ai since he knows that she became a shut in after Koito's death. I do wonder about why Koito decided to end her life. Was it because the teacher rejected her or something or is it because she couldn't take all the bullying anymore.

O-okay, so they introduced the obligatory outgoing girl who always dies 1st.

As i said in other thread, Wonder Egg is the evolution of Magic Girls.

- Magic Girls typical plot (a new monster every day, power of cute girls to defeat it)

- Dark as Madoka Magica.

- But now, without the cute dresses or wear.

I actually like the new Kyubey:

These puppet guys are just there, chilling, playing their Go.

No pressure, no lies, no deceivement, just some realistic advices to the girls who pertub there, fool girls who wanna die doing something so dangerous for whatever personal reasons they don't care.

Yeah, you have to consider what preceeds it, when compared to the naturalism what preceeds them, these lower counts scenes feels more performed which further tell the story of Rika who seems to be putting up a fake persona as a shield. Exaggerating her own traits, which is what the animation did.

Rika's self-inflicted wounds and notably gregarious personality are kinda run-of-the-mill for me, which wouldn't be that bad, but I'd have to wait for more on her. The "Yu-Yu fans" are extremely annoying as well. At least it's fitting that Rika is required to save a pair of idol fans being originally a bonafide idol herself, apparently. Her resolve to save Chiemi, an overweight person and fan of hers at the time, was obviously out of sheer guilt (hence why that also would explain the self-inflicted cuts).

The animation in the action scenes again looked so derp here and didn't clean up from last time. The whole time with Odd Eye suddenly running up out of some flashback-driven motivation and all the sudden giving that "white knight looking back" pose was rather offputting, but at least I got a bit of a chuckle from that.

I'm still not sold on much with this series at all. While it does have nice bits of visual metaphors and subtleties here and there, they don't amount to much when the main course is half-cooked at best.

Ai Ohto's dream looks interesting! It looks like Koito has a romantic feelings on Sawaki-sensei!

Kyaaa. Loving this show so far and the animation is god tier. So many theories right now, but here’s mine.

There’s a possibility that the reason why Koito died was because of that shady teacher. Really? A teacher hugging a minor student and also in the opening, I feel like the person Rika was saving was Koito herself. The monster said “I like young women! Let me gobble them up!” Pedo vibes. Then that shady teacher/counselor I believe is a closeted pedo and THAT monster was him as Koito’s trauma. Edit: Okay I watched that opening scene and holy crap THAT WAS KOITO’S VOICE!

Holy crap. I’m may be losing my mind, but I’m kinda hoping my theories were right. But it makes me feel a thousand more bad for Koito’s death and somehow I think Ai maybe saw the shady teacher doing it with Koito, but she completely misunderstood what was happening or she forgot because of how traumatic that was to witness (Ai is too innocent, it was shown in her conversation with Neru), HENCE the teacher is always visiting their mom or her to check because Ai might expose him.

Aaaaaah! Can’t wait for the next episode. This anime is so good so far. Rika’s Doctor Stone cosplay, though. Hahaha! Jk. I love how this episode made me dislike her then ended up liking her, hoping she’s okay.

This anime is both really cute and depressing. The animation is really good at action sequences with a hint of some rotoscoping. I know the new girl isn't rotten to the core so I hope to see more of her reasonings. Though I'm sure she didnt want the girl to hurt herself financially on her part

i really enjoy the animation of this anime it's so beautiful! especially when Ai and Rika were fighting that monster together.

that one scene in Ai's dream about Koito where she was seen in a classroom with their teacher and Ai running away from them crying makes me wonder what happened that triggered Ai's reaction. can it be that Koito had some kind of relationship with the teacher? also because she got bullied by the other girls..

Absolutely loving this anime. So glad I decided to watch it today, can't wait for more episodes to come out.
The animation is top quality! aaaa

The plot is intriguing - Rika turning into stone though, I hope that doesn't mean she received too much injuries that she's dead IRL therefore turned into stone in her dream? That's one of my theories. I hope it's not true though.

Ooto is adorable and I'm so glad we can see more of her interactions in these episodes

I like Rika, she is an interesting character. I wonder if she self-harmed because of Chiemi's death or if it is something that happened before. Actually, I have a feeling she was self-harming way before Chiemi. Between how important looks are to her, the fact that she seems to be fond of older men, how she described herself as a failed idol, not to mention how she said she wouldn't sacrifice herself anymore and on top of that how it is a well-known fact that the idol industry can be destructive, it wouldn't surprised me if it turns out something messed up happened to her when she was younger.
