Seems this episode takes place around Winter time near the Christmas holidays.
They really gave Muse a big role this episode though to be a lead part of the ceremony and the singing part. Not bad. I can kinda feel their spirit this episode. Pretty intense second half of this episode as I'm kinda impressed the potentials of their world's technology.
Another week and one more episode of Listeners (good episode like the previous one by the way) and all I have in mind is What is happening now? Jimmy is dead or alive? I had a lot of unsolved points before and now after this I got even more.
This is a very inconsistent series and that has been the biggest problem since episode # 1 until today.
Well ... at lest a great voice actor for that older marshal guy. Doesn't make the anime better though. I had expected more of this episode with the way the previous episode ended.
That guy calling Mu princess ... did not seem to be interesting - so far.
Yep, the uncle Marshall is basically Jim Marshall, the founder of Marshall Amplification, and he can be found here because it's in Londinium which is basically London, which is where Marshall company was founded.
Sally Simpson - Sadly that girl's gonna end with her face beaten and bloodied as her name suggests, but I am still interested in finding out whether she will aid the good guys in the end.
Outside the house Mr. Simpson announced
That Sally couldn't go to the meeting
He went on cleaning his blue Rolls-Royce
And she ran inside a-weeping
She got to her room and tears splashed the picture
Of her new messiah
She picked up a book of her father's life
And threw it on the fire
She knew from the start
Deep down in her heart
That she and Tommy were worlds apart
But her mother said "Never mind
Your part is to be
What you'll be"
The theme of the sermon was
"Come Unto Me And Love Will Find a Way"
So Sally decided to ignore her dad
And sneak out anyway
She spent all afternoon getting ready
And decided she'd try to touch him
Maybe he'd see that she was free
And talk to her this Sunday
She knew from the start
Deep down in her heart
That she and Tommy were worlds apart
But her mother said "Never mind
Your part is to be
What you'll be"
She arrived at six and the place was swinging
To gospel music by nine
Group after group appeared on the stage
And Sally just sat there crying
She bit her nails looking pretty as a picture
Right in the very front row
Then a DJ wearing a blazer with a badge
Went on and said "Here we go!"
The crowd went crazy
As Tommy hit the stage
Little Sally got lost as the police bossed
The crowd back in a rage
Soon the atmosphere was cooler
And Tommy gave a lesson
Sally just had to let him know she loved him
And leapt up on the rostrum
She ran across stage to the spotlit figure
And brushed him on the face
Tommy whirled around as a uniformed man
Threw her off the stage
She knew from the start
Deep down in her heart
That she and Tommy were worlds apart
But her mother said "Never mind
Your part is to be
What you'll be"
Her cheek hit a chair and blood trickled down
Mingling with her tears
Tommy carried on preaching
And his voice filled Sally's ears
She caught his eye, she had to try
But he couldn't see through the lights
Her face was gashed and the ambulance men
Had to carry her out that night
The crowd went crazy
As Tommy left the stage
Little Sally was lost
For the price of a touch
And a gash across her face
Oooooh!
Sixteen stitches put her right and her dad said
"Don't say I didn't warn ya!"
Sally got married to a rock musician
She met in California
Tommy always talks about the day
The disciples all went wild
Sally still carries a scar on her cheek
To remind her of his smile
She knew from the start
Deep down in her heart
That she and Tommy were worlds apart
But her mother said "Never mind
Your part is to be
What you'll be"
Mr. James Marshall - For once surrounded by his own inventions. Bonus fact: One Johnny Allen Hendrix would eventually have his name changed by his parents to James Marshall Hendrix. There was no connection between the rock legend and "the lord of loud" other than their names in real life, but if Jimi was to return on the show, I would imagine he'd greet old Mr. Marshall with a wink and a smile.
A pletora of references to The Who! - Though I didn't quite expect the show to name an episode after them only to have Mu question just who she is, but that callback to our boi straight out saying "Who are you?", really hammering home the theme of Mu taking Jimi's place landed oh, so perfectly!
We'll be fighting in the streets
With our children at our feet
And the morals that they worship will be gone
And the men who spurred us on
Sit in judgement of all wrong
They decide and the shotgun sings the song
I'll tip my hat to the new constitution
Take a bow for the new revolution
Smile and grin at the change all around
Pick up my guitar and play
Just like yesterday
Then I'll get on my knees and pray
We don't get fooled again
The change, it had to come
We knew it all along
We were liberated from the fold, that's all
And the world looks just the same
And history ain't changed
'Cause the banners, they are flown in the next war
I'll tip my hat to the new constitution
Take a bow for the new revolution
Smile and grin at the change all around
Pick up my guitar and play
Just like yesterday
Then I'll get on my knees and pray
We don't get fooled again
No, no!
I'll move myself and my family aside
If we happen to be left half alive
I'll get all my papers and smile at the sky
Though I know that the hypnotized never lie
Do ya?
There's nothing in the streets
Looks any different to me
And the slogans are replaced, by-the-bye
And the parting on the left
Are now parting on the right
And the beards have all grown longer overnight
I'll tip my hat to the new constitution
Take a bow for the new revolution
Smile and grin at the change all around
Pick up my guitar and play
Just like yesterday
Then I'll get on my knees and pray
We don't get fooled again
Don't get fooled again
No, no!
Yeah!
Meet the new boss
Same as the old boss
All Along the watchtower - I am partial on this one, either they went straight up literal with the lyrics just because it is the one song everyone will likely associate with Jimi Hendrix, or they have been playing the long-con here and are about to reveal that Jimi's shadow-self is no other than Bob Dylan. A man can dream.
Jimi Hendrix, Heaven Research
There must be some kind of way outta here
Said the joker to the thief
There's too much confusion
I can't get no relief
Business men, they drink my wine
Plowman dig my earth
None were level on the mind
Nobody up at his word
Hey, hey
No reason to get excited
The thief he kindly spoke
There are many here among us
Who feel that life is but a joke
But, uh, but you and I, we've been through that
And this is not our fate
So let us stop talkin' falsely now
The hour's getting late, hey
All along the watchtower
Princes kept the view
While all the women came and went
Barefoot servants, too
Outside in the cold distance
A wildcat did growl
Two riders were approaching
And the wind began to howl
Freedom! - Hendrix's freedom would have been a great rendition for the show's Jimi's realization of his allies' betrayal, but I would actually pay good money to see them use George Michael's 1990's Freedom! Both because of the lyrics mirroring Mu and Echo pretty well, and because of the video's visuals of a depressed platinum blonde singing of liberation and love with the voice of a man, which is how I imagine next episode will play out for the most part. It's a long-shot, but guess we'll see.
I won't let you down
I will not give you up
Gotta have some faith in the sound
It's the one good thing that I've got
I won't let you down
So please don't give me up
'Cause I would really, really love to stick around, oh yeah
Heaven knows I was just a young boy
Didn't know what I wanted to be (Didn't know what I wanted to be)
I was every little hungry schoolgirl's pride and joy
And I guess it was enough for me (said I guess it was enough for me)
To win the race? A prettier face!
Brand new clothes and a big fat place
On your rock and roll T.V.
But today the way I play the game is not the same, no way
Think I'm gonna get myself happy
I think there's something you should know
I think it's time I told you so
There's something deep inside of me
There's someone else I've got to be
Take back your picture in a frame
Take back your singing in the rain
I just hope you understand
Sometimes the clothes do not make the man
All we have to do now
Is take these lies and make them true somehow
All we have to see
Is that I don't belong to you
And you don't belong to me yeah yeah
Freedom! (I won't let you down)
Freedom! (I will not give you up)
Freedom! (Have some faith in the sound)
You've gotta give for what you take (It's the one good thing that I've got)
Freedom! (I won't let you down)
Freedom! (So please don't give me up)
Freedom! ('Cause I would really, really love to stick around)
You've gotta give for what you take
Heaven knows we sure had some fun, boy
What a kick just a buddy and me (what a kick just a buddy and me)
We had every big-shot good time band on the run, boy
We were living in a fantasy (we were living in a fantasy)
We won the race, got out of the place
I went back home, got a brand new face
For the boys on MTV
But today the way I play the game has got to change, oh yeah
Now I'm gonna get myself happy
I think there's something you should know
I think it's time I stopped the show
There's something deep inside of me
There's someone I forgot to be
Take back your picture in a frame
Don't think that I'll be back again
I just hope you understand
Sometimes the clothes do not make the man
All we have to do now
Is take these lies and make them true somehow
All we have to see
Is that I don't belong to you
And you don't belong to me, yeah yeah
Freedom! (I won't let you down)
Freedom! (I will not give you up)
Freedom! (Have some faith in the sound)
You've gotta give for what you take (It's the one good thing that I've got)
Freedom! (I won't let you down)
Freedom! (So please don't give me up)
Freedom! ('Cause I would really, really love to stick around)
You've gotta give for what you take
Well it looks like the road to heaven
But it feels like the road to hell
When I knew which side my bread was buttered
I took the knife as well
Posing for another picture
Everybody's got to sell
But when you shake your ass
They notice fast
And some mistakes were build to last
That's what you get (That's what you get)
That's what you get (I say that's what you get)
That's what you get (for changing your mind)
That's what you get for changing your mind
That's what you get
That's what you get (And after all this time)
I just hope you understand
Sometimes the clothes do not make me, oh yeah
All we have to do now
Is take these lies and make them true somehow
All we have to see
Is that I don't belong to you
And you don't belong to me, yeah yeah
Freedom!
Freedom! (oh freedom)
Freedom! (my freedom)
You've gotta give for what you take
Freedom! (hold on to my freedom)
Freedom!
Freedom! (my freedom)
You've gotta give for what you take
Give for what you, give for what you take yeah
Yeah, you've got to give for what you, give for what you, give
May not be what you want from me
Just the way it's got to be
Lose the face now
I've got to live, I've got to live, I've got to live
Overall, a solid episode, and finally some progress on our main protagonists' budding relationship. (Also, seeing Teen Spirit return as a plot device once again made me giggle almost as much as when Nir decided to return back to relevance last episode.) Can't wait for next weeks' performance!

If I could be an expert in just one arcane,
and madness inducing field of study,
it would be you.
The trace of Jimi leads Echo and Mu to mecha-London a.k.a Londinium, and an unexpected ride leads them faster than "the speed of sound".
Well, this episode got what we wanted out of the cliffhanger last episode: Mu being the "younger sister" of Jimi Stonefree (and no wonder she's heralded the "Princess") the last who fought the Earless, undead across "parallel dimensions". But all that, whether is it true or not, depends up to her to decide the fate in their week-long stay during the Christmas period.
The interpretation of Uncle Marshall though, obviously true and implied that he's the founder of the Marshall brand of musical electronics based in London (though to audiophiles this is standard knowledge).
The play though, it's eerily predictable of the after-effects that will transpire: a cash-grab to resummon the events of past, and explains how Nir had met the "resurgence" of Jimi.
Seems like the Shakespeare quote of "All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely Players" draws true to this resolution.
Now I'm very interested to know what's the thought process post-episode.
I was hoping echo would have more progression with mu but it seems he still only looks at his journey in one aspect.
I honestly just want to see how tf this will end. Everything just seems awkward.
Behold of my awesomeness~
controversial and/or sensitive topics likely devolve into the same repetitive, derogatory, abusive, and harassing comments can no longer be posted.
But my feels.
I continue to be baffled how people can hate this show so much. Like... I disagree with almost every criticism I've heard.
Bad Writing? HARD disagree, this show has amazing writing, and the wheels withing wheels are coming together, we're getting more stuff every episode. I very much think by the last episode the whole is going to be quite interesting.
Too fast paced? WTF? It's no different than any of a hundred shows I've seen. And given how often people complain about slow pace...
No story? LOL! Again, lots of things have come out over every episode and each one is making the picture clearer. Heck, this episode alone revealed a lot of pretty major things! Especially about the background of Players, the World, and what happened before.
So yeah... this is very much a show made for me to such an extent it's making me have a hard time even taking the criticisms seriously. Because this is seriously moving into AOTY stuff for me.
No comment on those about the animation though. I just... yeah, I like it? And so often hate the look of shows that get lauded for their good animation. I'm definitely not a person who will watch shows for the animation, though very much one who won't because I can't stand the look of things. Which has happened too many times with shows that get lauded big time.
Man they sure tried to jam a seasons worth in character development in 5 minutes. All this talk about Mu feeling alone and out of place. I'm sorry is that going to be featured in a directors cut or something cause I don't remember that ever being explored.

I don't know about a director's cut, but it is much easier to make that read when watching the endings to each episode back to back. Mu has a grand total of three emotions in those: Really happy, really mad, or really, really lonely and sad.
If I could be an expert in just one arcane,
and madness inducing field of study,
it would be you.
And how am i supposed to live after this episode? :S I already felt devastated after the last episode, the life was just about to get better for those two, AND Nir finally found some friends, I couldn't be happier for them and for them to just die :v am i also gonna die right before getting happy? ;-; I thought i couldn't be feeling any worse, but then i saw this episode. Fucking asshole Tommy, manipulating Miu into the one actually doing it, like what the hell is wrong with you man...
I guess i was wrong in last episode, saying it was Jimi, i just couldn't believe Miu would be the one behind the deed, just didn't expect it at all... So Tommy tricked her into performing as her brother on the stage, and she trusted him, can't blame her, i would also believe that they actually wanted to do a theater play, given how popular her brother is.
Pretty good episode with all these revelations, slowly we get our story, piece by piece, I really like it. Also finally got to see the old man kissing the wall in the opening, haha i was always curious, who could be so passionate about the wall, he turned out to be quite a nice character, even opposing Tommy there at the end, maybe he will join up with Echo in the next episode when he will try to save Miu.
Also hooray we finally broke the episodic loop, the past 2 episodes (and the next one) is all the main plot with the same setting and characters. Hoorayyy
The preview section might be a disease when it can spoiled everything. Yeah, like these example. Its bring no good. The whole Project and the comandeer obsession might be a bit exaggeration. It never met the clearance, even its not matched at all with the previous episode. Like, Roz said Jimi might be in the Londominium. But, the leader said no. Denka shit said the same thing as Roz, so the liar here was ofc that shitty leader. The problem here was Mu really trusted everyone that might lead her into somekind of cheating. This episode proves it right, and the story kinda messed so much. I thought the transition over the place was pretty messy, rather i said it a quirky one. Hell, even the whole question about how could they found out them in the Gnome island was never answered. So, yeah, uninterested because its too predictable thank to the preview section. Its even lead to no surprised when Echo taked the real action to saved her out and let all the responsibility to him instead of Mu. And the impact was ofc he became an Earless like Roz said in the beginning. A happy ending because they two were an Earless and lived long after. Thats it.
