More background storytelling based on Orphen's past. I must say, his relationship with Azalie is actually more important than I had expected in this series. It even shows the orphanage that came from.

Anyways, the more we know about Orphen, the better.

A long flashback of Orphen and Azalie, it was fine but it's a pity that their relationship ended up like this... now it's time for the real adventure I guess, with two new characters.

This was an alright episode. So we got more info about Azalea and Orphen's past. So that's how Cleao and Majic joined Oprhen. I'm interested to see what happens next.

I feel like this was a wasted episode or that it should have been episode 3. With only 13 episodes I don't think a flashback of Azalie's and Orphen's past was necessary

The episode wasn't bad, it eventually closes the arc about Azalie's chase but... it basically just ends to affirm that she & Orphen/Krylancelo have always shared a strong bound comparable to sister-brother. Something we could have guessed from the previous episodes.

I honestly think this episode should have been the 3rd one, last scene with Majic & Cleao being replaced with Orphen joining the squad to start the hunt.

Yeah that's exactly how I felt about it. We already knew they had a strong familial bond so this flashback didn't feel necessary or it should have been played before the hunt for Azalie.

Wow this episode was painfully boring.
Pacing ranges from fast to slow.
Flashback was completely pointless it serves no purpose narrative wise especially after last episode it was just a filler which is just weird considering how fast pacing was in the last episode and that this anime only has like 13 episodes.
I don't know how good the source material is but the directing is amateurishly bad.
Animation is still sub par.
Overall I just don't have a motivation to continue any further.

So, even before she became a dragon or switch bodies with Childman, azalie was already an pretentious evil girl.

What I got from this episode was that Azalie is a character I'll hate unless if she has an excuse for what she did.

Haven't seen flashbacks like this since Ou-sama Game... Why didn't they showed us this in the first episode?
No tomo malas decisiones, solo me gusta apoyar causas perdidas.

Damn, Azalie, you're going way too far; tricking him into thinking you died is an asshole thing to do, anyway you slice it. :/

At least Cleo and Majic will get more screentime now. They're like twins in this ep. lmao

Why didn't they showed us this in the first episode?

@el_morris
Because he's reflecting on the relationship they HAD, compared to the bad one they have now?

@Xstasy

I disagree it 'had no purpose' because it was hinting that Azalie has a twisted personality from the get-go...and it was the first one to do so. If it was shown BEFORE her Face Heel Turn in episode 03, it would have been too obvious.

Just because it's a flashback doesn't make it 'filler'; no doubt this stuff was in the novel too.

In this case it is a filler you can remove it completely from a story and it would still make sense.
Most flashbacks are filler by the definition.
Flashback is poorly handled we are immediately thrown into it without proper transition and it overstays it's welcome very quickly.
Flashbacks can be ok if they are done in a right way but more often than not they are just lazy exposition dumps or worse filler.
The general rule of thumb is if you can tell the story without them then so much the better.
We already know that Azalie has a twisted personality from the last episode, this flashback would be more effective there provided that it's only few minutes long and not the entire episode.
Besides it's not worth sacrificing the entire episode and pacing integrity just for minuscule information gain.
I'm sensitive to this type of flashbacks they tend to trigger my Naruto flashback PTSD LoL
I would have less complaints if it was short but going from incredible fast pacing in last episode to glacial slow pacing in this is just a pacing whiplash.

I liked learning about Orphen's childhood though, since I've been a fan of him since the 90s and was never shown anything of the sort in other adaptations. :<

Backstory is ALWAYS important; how else can you tell a backstory without a flashback; aside from a character voicing exposition (which would be boring and stupid?)

Backstory is important but it didn't need to be the entire episode. This series is only getting 13 episodes and they just wasted one on an unnecessary flashback. It would have been okay if this was only maybe half the episode or if this aired before the fight with Azalie. Also it didn't convey any new info. It just established the relationship between Azalie and Orphen, which was done in episodes 2 and 3

It did; Orphen's childhood and also how Azalie liked to test people.

We didn't know that stuff before?

But unless they do another season, there's no way they can fit 20 novels of material into thirteen episodes...that's for sure.

Let me rephrase. It didn't convey any important info. Why should we care now that the problem has been solved in the previous episode? This episode feels like it should have aired at least before the fight. And there most likely won't be another season since Studio Deen just keeps shooting themselves in the foot this season

I will be honest, after every episode I want to rewatch Slayers more and more.

In my opinion this story is just too cliché to have remake today.

Well, I care, okay? I'd like to know what made her decide to actually murder her whole class. I'm sure I'm not the only one watching this who wants to know that.

I wouldn't say the problem is 'solved'; yeah she's not a dragon-beast anymore but she's still not the person she was five years ago. It will only really be solved if we get the reason for her betrayal.

She DIDN'T WANT to murder her whole class. Azalie didn't control her dragon form. She was trying a spell and had a major fuck up. You wanna know why she tried the spell? She wanted to prove how great a sorcerer she was to Childman because SHE WAS IN LOVE WITH HIM. I have seen the original anime and near the end you learn she had a major crush on him but he rejected her because he wanted her to focus on becoming a great sorcerer

Yes, I remember that...but it was stupid to waste a whole 24 episode season on Azalie's problem. lol I'm glad they aren't doing that THIS time because I never liked her that much.

If anyone wants to read the novels, you can get the translated e-book version from Amazon at 7$ each. Thank God, because my bookshelf is way too crowded lol

More of Azalie and Krylancelo a.k.a Orphen's backstory while under the tutelage of Master Childman, a backstory that's dragging on for far too long.

But more like how Orphen's child mentality and Azalie's testing made both of them face fate like never before.

But then, I'm always asking myself, why reboot old series when the originals are all that's worth? The producers who wanted a reboot to something that no one wanted serves as a recipe for disaster, not entirely Studio Deen's fault.

It's a shame their relationship is in tatters. I like the themes and characters, though

Here's some character info...that the show hasn't told us but the novel does.

Orphen is 20 years old. That surprised me; I thought he was around 17. Nope, he's an adult. Cool :D

The 'kid', Volkan is actually 18. He's a dwarf so that's why he's short. Lol

Claiomh is 17 and Majic is 14.

all the 5 years ago flashbacks just makes me feel sad, cause we know what's happening in the present time... where all things goes to shit...

especially knowing some of the main characters is now dead or gone.

also, I literally have no idea what's going on with this series now... (I didn't watch the 1998 ver) (been skimming through the episodes by 10 secs, finished the entire episode in less than 10 mins... cause there's nothing really new/ interesting about the current ?plot? to watch, does it even have a plot?)

___ ___ ___

Also, this reminds me of "Watashi, Nouryoku wa Heikinchi de tte Itta yo ne!"

Where they also apparently decide to remove arcs and turn them into flashbacks... which I didn't like and -1 score cause of that.

Ain't gonna lie, when Azalie disappeared in the graveyard, I thought she was gonna ask Orphen to play hide and seek with her. You know old classic "try and find me" style.

Funny how the rest of the ep kinda felt like that, with Azalie playing mindtricks on Orphen in a hide and seek sort of way.

So, another random flashback that would have been better if the series had a proper chronological order. Unfortunately, it turned out to be very boring.

Flashback episode on Orphen and Azalie's past, under the guise of a messed up 'prank' what Azalie has done really shows she has some major issues. How Majic and Cleao joined Orphen there at the end really feels out of nowhere since we only saw them interact with him a few times
