Cliche. the protagonist seems to like aircraft but simply did not recognize the SAAB Gripen ...

SAAB with uppercase letters was the abbreviation of the company name "Svenska Aeroplan AB" from 1927 to 1965.
From 1965 the company name is the former abbreviation, and is just Saab AB. So no four uppercase letters since then.

If you don't want to yell the company name. ;)
BOEING!!! LOCKHEED!!! SAAB!!! :D

Okay, I'll correct.

Pretty shitty. So main antagonist is named Xi and hates Japan? I bet it's banned in China

The two main human characters are from China.

That first episode was a lot better than I anticipated going in. I'm hoping the series keeps going up. I was pleased with the lack of fan service, and that the two main characters are not related in any way other than being friends. I am also glad that they have, apparently, nipped in the bud our male protagonist suddenly being able to pilot a jet fighter ;)

For the aircraft otaku out there, it looks like we have a Gripen, and Eagle and a Phantom II as the rides for our three pilots.

That is a really good question! One who can be asked about a lot of shows! :D

But this one... Well, I suppose it is aimed at younger japanese boys, who likes pretty girls and fighter jets. Personally, I've would have enjoyed this show a lot, back when I was 12-14 years old.

That being said the the main character seems to be obsessed with the Japanese Airforce yet he doesn't even seem to know which aircraft they are flying.
He also has lot's of images of aircraft but failed to realise the aircraft he was looking for was a Saab Gryphen, it,s not that well known aircraft but i am pretty sure that most people with an interest in jet fighters know about it it's pretty recognisable.

There is no Japanese Air Force after 1945. There is only the Japan Air Self-Defense Force, founded in 1954 . Juridically that's an enormous difference.

Actually the Gripen (Griffin in English) is a very well known and respected fighter aircraft among japanese military nerds. Gripen models was in almost every model store in Akihabara, whens I was there a couple of years ago, and it shows up in some web mangas and other media as well.

The subtitles called the plane JAS 39 Gripen, bus "JAS" is a designation only used within the Swedish Air Force. It's an Swedish abbreviation for Jakt (fighter), Attack (air-to-ground attack) and Spaning (reconnaissance). In NATO or JASDF it logically would had been abbreviated as FAR, a different number, and logically also "Griffin".
I know that it's actually the self defence force but i mention airforce since i thought most readers would know what i mean.
It's also the reason why i question the appearance of the Griphen with Japanese markings around an area where Mig 21 or Chengdu J7 where active in the last part of my post.

And with the comment about the Griphen not being that well known i meant among average people with little knowledge about jet fighters.
Most people will know what i F16 is or a Mig but unless your from Sweden or someone with knowledge about aircraft you probably won't know about the Griphen.
Hence saying that most people with knowledge about jet fighters know about it.
It's a very interesting and capable aircraft but it hasn't seem much actual combat use so not much chances to prove itself.

Not sure about subs since i watched the Raw but the text on the mains phone said JAS 39 as well, i have always known it as the Saab Griphen tho.

Before I went to Japan, I also believed that the Gripen was a relative unknown fighter outside Europe. Until I got to the model shops in Akihabara. But one can never ever underestimate the japanese nerds! There was Gripen models everywhere! :)
So I am not even a little bit surprised why they choose the Gripen as a main to this tv-show. A little more surprising is the other two fighters in the ED. Is'nt the F-15 Eagle and the F-4 Phantom II really old, compared to the Gripen? The Phantom II is like two generations older.

Also, there is no "hen" (strange) about Gripen ;)
No H in the name, I mean. :)

This show's premise is acceptable, I guess. Japan has developed prototype aircraft to fight a mysterious army called the Zai. For some reason, one of their fighters, the Gripen, cannot fly properly until its pilot develops feelings for a random boy. This is something that wouldn't look out of place in a harem anime. I understand that some people are tired of this kind of premise, but it can be enjoyable depending on its execution.

Anyway, the boy Kei Narutani wants to join the military to avenge his parents, a dream that is discouraged by his friend Minghua. Now, there could be some tension between Kei and Minghua and I kinda look forward to it, but the show doesn't really do a good job at conveying. She is upset that Kei wants to join the military because she is afraid he could get killed. Minghua does express her concern for Kei but only after Kei tries to get into a military base, before that she was happy making fun of him.

The military is interested in getting Kei to join their top-secret project because he is the only that can make the Gripen fly properly and since Kei wants to join, that seems like a win-win scenario. I'm not entirely opposed to this show including romance because romance can humanize the characters and not make them feel like like bland and predictable archetypes. I just don't want the cutesy and light-hearted aspect to swallow the series whole, especially because it seems to include sci-fi and action elements. While it might get off to a mediocre start, this show has plenty of potential and I'm interested to see where it goes.

The F4 is a highly upgradable aircraft they can be fully upgraded to a 4th generation fighter jet and it's still in service with some of the most modern armies in the world like the Japanese self defence force the Turkish airforce and the South Korean airforce.
The Americans out phased it but that had more to do with the pilots, many American pilots didn't like the aircraft.
It was ahead of it's time when it was introduced in the 60's it was the first aircraft that was specifically designed to fight with rockets that locked on to there target but the rockets that could do that back then where still in their early phases and unreliable.
So during the Vietnam war the aircraft earned a bad name amongst American pilots which it never lost.

As mention it's still in use by the Japanese Self Defence force like the F15 so it's not such a strange choice for this anime.
The Gripen seems like the strange choice in this case.

It seems like many here on MAL are really underestemating the military/vehicle otaku culture in Japan. There is A LOT of people in Japan who gladly pays a lot of money to keep up with their ship and plane hobbies. The model shops are many, and their range is huge. And the plane otakus will buy the DVD/BD of this show.

Sure they like their own ships and planes firstly, but they are also curious about other countries vehicles. Just look on the Finnish/German influence in Strike/Brave Witches, and the German ship in High School Fleet.
When it comes to the planes of JASDF, they're almost all American, which is perceived as a bit boring for the otakus in the long run. The want something to spice it up a bit. Something exotic. Something they already know of, and admire.
Hence the introduction of the, among the japanese plane otakus very well known, Swedish Saab Gripen! :)

F2 are often painted blue and that's an easy way to keep them apart from F16.

WVR (within-visual-range) isn't really how most aerial combat happen today. This is "old-style" combat, more as a rule-of-cool since modern aerial fights are typically BVR (beyond-visual-range), which boring from an action scene standpoint.

It was not what I expected, but the battle against the alien ships was not bad.
The MC and his childhood friend are refugees from China because of an alien invasion.
The meeting of the MC with the pilot of the pink plane was pretty cliche, but the anime is made of cliches. (I still find the color of airplanes crazy, but I see that this does not affect the performance of the pilot or it means a disadvantage)
The kidnapping was a point where I really believed that Kei and Minghua were in serious trouble, but apparently the scientist just wanted to prove his point on how to activate Gripen, the pink haired girl.
It's not something innovative, but I thought it was pretty decent, so I'll watch the next two episodes to see in which direction this anime is moving.

Trash, but hopefully fun trash.

In a way, a sort of heritage can be traced back to the 2D plane girl waifus of World War II:

https://www.express.co.uk/expressyourself/353663/Pin-ups-on-a-Plane-how-risque-artists-inspired-our-World-War-Two-bombers
Douglas Bond, a psychiatrist for the 8th Air Force in England, observed how devoted to the aircraft the men became by naming them "Miss Your Lovin", "Flamin' Mamie" and so on. In these beloved female planes, noted Bond, "mechanical failure was akin to infidelity". Planes that were thought to have minds of their own were called names like "Shedonnawanna".

Another season, another seemingly forgettable show by Satelight. It seems that Kawamori simply cannot get his studio to put out a really solid top to bottom series. I'll give it the 3 episode rule to see if this improves.

For once I find myself agreeing with you. That this was originally a light novel which wasn't even popular in Japan, has no presence outside of Japan, yet gets animated in cooperation with the JASDF tells you really all you need to know about this anime.

When someone told me that the JSDF uses anime for recruiting purposes, I once replied to them that I thought they were wearing tinfoil.

I have since regretted telling them that, particularly when GATE came out. This anime however, really takes the recruitment attempt up to 11, to the point that in reflection I feel like labeling it as outright propaganda. Here's what leads me to believe this:

1. The amount of geopolitical strikes: The opening scene takes place in East China Sea (strike one) where what are clearly the Chinese People's Liberation Army Air Force and People's Liberation Army Navy, both conspicuously flagged and adorned with national livery to the point that they can easily be made out even in the background (strike two), utterly fail to protect a convoy of fleeing Japanese and Chinese civilians. This is contrasted to a single JAS-39 Grippen with overly prominent JASDF roundels which effortlessly does what a whole wing of fighters with backup from a squadron of guided missile destroyers apparently couldn't do (strike 3, in addition to not understanding that guided missiles are proximity fused) in very thinly veiled nationalism meant to set up Japan as the "rightful representative of the Asia-Pacifc" in a manner that hearkens back to much older WWII propaganda.

2. This is then taken to further absurd levels when we see the situation in Japan, which is absolutely unaffected by the war. Keep in mind: Japan is an archipalego with few natural resources, and Kei's comments suggest that the war has been going on for some period of time.
His further surprise at seeing a civilian airline suggests that it has been going on for long enough that airforces and navies elsewhere have lost almost any ability to defend airspace and protect critical sealanes except in absolute emergencies. Furthermore, since China is a continental power with ample land based trade routes, the evacuation of a major urban center like Hong-Kong by sea (as opposed to moving further inland by road) suggests that the armed forces of every major power have no serious ability to contest the Zai's supremacy.

In short, Japan's condition is impossible: its navy would have been annihilated, its air force shot out of the sky in its entirety, and the nation would be beginning to starve, as it did when the US did exactly that in WWII to bring Japan to its knees. A single improved fighter, would in no way be enough to secure the airspace (or sea control) necessary to protect the civilian populace from attacks on a regular basis, much less begin securing sea-lanes, unless what Kei sees is but a small part of a mostly-implemented program to crash-retrofit the overwhelming majority of the JSDF's 290+ combat aircraft and 45 maritime surface combatants with the technology.

Regardless, this is again nationalistic propaganda, of the type we saw explicitly stated in, of all places, Kado: The right answer, where the alien at the center of the series stated that he had chosen Japan because of the intrinsic "righteousness," "equality," and "generosity" of Japan.

Apart from a few minor tech references, Girly Airforce is essentially a throwback to 2002's Yukikaze, albeit heavily propagandized to promote the JASDF.

And to clear things up: I don't mind nationalistic anime or series; I enjoyed GATE (the manga) and enjoyed the anime to an extent, but like the GATE anime, Girly Airforce is too bombastic, too unaware of itself, and doesn't have enough else going on to let the audience reasonably believe that this is worth watching for anything other than nationalistic value a la Battle: LA or Operation: Red Sea; Kei is literally a morality pet for an AI by the end of the first episode.

@Aversa
was really melodramatic it was almost pointless to watch

That's because it's a light novel which has been adapted into propaganda whose primary function is to prop up the JASDF as the superior fighting force and the more moral one, thereby helping with recruitment IRL. "Sign up, defend Japan from aliens and you too might just get laid!", lol.

The reason for this is because, unlike the other aircraft anime this season (kotobiki squadron in the wilderness), Girly Airforce is less concerned with depicting aircraft realistically in a fictional environs for its own sake and more corncerned with outright nationalism. For example:
https://www.crunchyroll.com/anime-news/2018/09/17/girly-air-force-teams-up-with-jasdf-in-new-key-visual

In other words It's fired from a Japanese aircraft and it has "high technology" so "of course it works"

Short of Konpeki no Kantai or Needless, I would actually qualify Girly Airforce as one of the more blatant examples of propaganda I've seen in anime to date.

The AIM-9X was reliably defeated by flares from a SU-22 Fitter in 2017 because, like the AIM-9P, it's been calibrated for US flares, not Soviet/Adversary flares:

https://combataircraft.keypublishing.com/2017/06/23/how-did-a-30-year-old-su-22-defeat-a-modern-aim-9x/

In 1987 we had the AIM-9P, which was designed to reject flares, and when we used US flares against it would ignore them and go straight for the target. We had the Soviet flares – they were dirty, and none of them looked the same – and the AIM-9P said ‘I love that flare’.

“Why’d that happen? We had designed it to reject American flares. The Soviet flares had different burn time, intensity and separation. The same way, every time we tried to build a SAM simulator, when we got the real thing it wasn’t the same.

“I use the AIM-9P because it is out of the system and I can talk about it. The same thing happened to a lot of things that are still in the system and that I can’t talk about.”

The pilot of the FA-18 had to use an AIM-120 AMRAAM to shoot down a 30 year old aircraft, so it's entirely possible that the Zai could simply fuck with radar/IR reception.

Am I the only one that think, this anime got a lot of similarities in character design to many other anime? Like Kancolle or Toji no Miko for that matter. I mean, look at those eyes (on the jet girls).

Example The missile AIM 120D has a no escape zone (NEZ) of approximately 45km. Moreover the AIM-120D is capable of supporting lateral acceleration of up to 40Gs. But why am I saying all this? Because the anime theoretically follows the real world , the fighters are variations of their real analogues. What I can not understand is the reason why even the aircraft canopy is pink. The protagonist's friend is boring and acts as if it were the mother of the protagonist, she is controlling and annoying. this looks more like an harem anime cliche. I'll keep watching because I like military aircraft.

the IRIS-T is able to achieve lateral acceleration of up to approximately 60Gs

I agree, in fact the J7 ought be using the PL series of air to air Missile. which were a copy of the Russian K series of Air to air missile
I agree would be more realistic

this is just a single-cour, right?

If so, this is just another cash grab promotion for the LN.

Theres a LN of this, damn, gonna have to have a looksee.Anyone know if theres an english translation please?

And why can't all the goddamn 02 fans out there try not comparing this with that?
For gods sake, its a bloody anime, just for enjoyment,or not if you don't like it.
And for your info,I am also a 02 fan,up to a point, but I don't try and shove 02 down other peoples throats at every opportunity(yeah, yeah, have a giggle at the phrasing now).
Same goes for all those plane/jsdf,etc etc buffs on this thread, its not reality(though that'd be nice),so who gives a rats ass about how accurate the planes are.
Also FYI,I liked this episode, and hopefully will like the rest of the season, regardless of whether the planes are pink, grey or bloody rainbow unicorn patterned.
I'm just enjoying it because I do.
Btw,just in case anyone gets up on his/hers high horse about this little post,i also realise that some of you aren't being pedantic, you're just trying to provide a little technical info.Well, thats ok I guess.

Okay, here's the reason why this anime felt pretty bad at first sight. Because Ono had two animes to directing, they pusshed Symphogear XV to late summer and have this one air before, sound bad, but it's a good sign when Satelight knows 2019 isn't gonna be it's anime year back in 2013. However, Symphogear G alot of love because of Ono.

Katsumi Ono knew that the anime is gonna be Darling in the Franxx 2.0 since he lost motivation cus of 2017/2018 being one of worst due to controversal Yugioh ARC-V that lose it's writing in the last 50 episode.

It's because Konami makes Yugioh card first, then charachter developtment 2nd.

The interest in Gripen continues in Japanese media, with much focus on how cheap it is, compared to the Mitsubishi F-2:

I thought this was ok.

Lucky guy getting a kiss just like that.

Seems his life will get even more interesting now that he has this role with the JSDF, either he needs to help save the world.

The air battle is not good enough, planes are super fast, need serious sfx in air battles, etc... BUT the mc girl is cute...

So it's like Arpeggio but bad, with some dose of Gate-themed JSDF are only thing that can save the world. Also romance with planes?

Not exactly thrilling combination, MC is rather irritating but will give two more episodes - maybe there will be something decent or at least entertaining.

It was alright for a first episode.

It's good that Kei put Minhao in her place. I understand her feelings, but she can't be that controlling.

That they need him to to power up/control Gripen reminds me of Lime-iro Senkitan, only without the awkward sex scenes I guess.

So this guy was a chinese? And then they just kissed? What an actual fuck to start a series, really like to bait people to like it, eh? Honestly, the story with the air forces and girl as its main resources not bad at all. Lets see how they handled the direction and transition over conversation. What i see here, its not bad, nor good enough.

On top of that, the art design was good. The girl looks nice, especially with Minghua. But, her personality was quite irritating. Need more screen time to judge my statement here. And for the action, its good to me. Nice animations, and completely do some crazy thing with that homing missiles. Sure Xi organization had some high advance technology to setup that fighter jet. Idk. I kinda like the story so far. Just surprising how they add one Shounen to improve the show. Its abnormal when seeing something like these.
