Just when I thought it was a slightly supernatural drama on human society (quite an old one but still relevant, I am afraid), ...it turns out to be so much more.

Boogiepop would simply not work if they told it in a linear fashion. Reasons for this is because each chapter or episode shows different characters with different POV which sometimes their actions causes a chain reaction in the story

What about the scene where Kirima Nagi atacked the girl in the street, they could have just continued the scene but instead they cut to a girl being killed in a alley. There was no need for that.

How can you tell there was no need for that?
(spoiler: you can't - you are not the director who directed this series).
Audience, lately even more so, seems to misunderstand that they are not advising others on how to create art. They are judging said art. So don't try to be a jack-of-all-trades lest you become of none.

Amazing episode, I love this series. The animation is somewhat unique and I like it. The director said people should watch to episode 4 before passing judgement on the series in an interview. It may be slightly confusing to newcomers. Like steins;gate though, it'll start off confusing and all make sense in the end.

Hmm. pretty interesting.

A little confusing but not that much.

So in the first episode we got to know the good guys. Miyashita, ehh whats his name the main dude in episode 1 and boogiepop.

What exactly Boogiepop is remains a mystery for now. All we know is that he's something that takes the body/shape of another human and becomes another personality/possibility of that human and his mission is to fight and erase monsters/adversities

And in the second episode we are introduced to the "bad" guys. The guy with the weird face proportions and "Manticore" the man eater. She's a failed creation of "Echoes". Echoes is someone that came from space to see if humans are genuinely kind? Hm.

Like I said a little confused.

I'm digging the art style but the proportions were sometimes off, especially on that evil kid. Animation wise nothing stellar but it definitely wasn't disappointing. The small fight scene's we had and the scene where boogiepop spoke to Echoes were animated pretty nicely. Im happy that we had zero CG crowds.

Music was a strong point for me. The directing of the music was nice. Very subtle background music, fitting the atmosphere just perfect.

Opening is alright I expected more. The first few seconds are godtier but then it just goes downhill. Especially with the drop. Doesn't fit the vocals in my opinion.

Ending is alright too. Nothing that I will listen to in the future

btw if I said something completely wrong please tell me.

Boogiepop Ep 1&2

The episodes were stylish, but really that was it.

The way it's presented is killing it because it's too fast. We have interesting characters but too little time.

The way it overlaps is nice but if when it happens so fast I can't help but feel that it's too forced.

Ep 1

What I liked about this episode was the fast pace. It may seem hypocritical but in the first episode of a mystery you want fast and confusing so that you won't forget it.

Unpopular opinion but the relationship between Boogiepop and Keiji was interesting. It was confusing at first but if you look at it closely there's a passage of time which is integrated into the second episode.

The dialogue in this episode is confusing however but it only happens if you watched it once and without context of the next episode which for a first episode of a mystery is great because it makes me think about the story, it makes me invested in what I'm watching...

Ep 2

The investment is gone.

I'm not saying that this was a bad episode but Jesus was it unsatisfying.

You know how you can tell that there is a really interesting story in this show and how you liked having to think for that story... welll we decided to plainly show it to you hope you like it!

If you wander how they take away the brainpower that you used they basically do it through the girl-who-found-Echoes death.

Through dialogue in the first episode you know girl-who-found-Echoes is gone althoigh you think that she was just another victim but we are basically robbed , an exageration, of working out she wasn't through the plot needing to plot so we just glance over her death and move on to more interesting stories...

I'm not saying that this is a bad episode, in fact I like the three characters they fleshed out; Manticore, Manticores-owner and Blue-haired-dectective but, and this is a big one, this episode has a flaw... it has the same illness that B:The Beginning has... it isn't mainstream material.

Let me explain my research. The first episode was a roller coaster, fast and fun, but it was a mind fuck. The second episode was a shitier, not shit but worse, roller coaster fast... but predictable. Why? Because the main demographic, that they need to make a profit on can't handle a mind fuck like the first episode.

I'm not saying that if you don't get the first episode you're stupid, I didn't get it either, I'm saying that the people producing this need people to get it.

If Manticore wasn't introduced so early then the show would be confusing and it may put some people off and that isn't good for a show like this because Madhouse can't merchandise it as it isn't the most merchandise-producing setting, apart from Boogiepop I'd buy her any day, so they have to make sure people love this show more than anything else in the season so they have to create intrigue at the cost of good story direction.

Both episodes are guilty of this so I'll give examples of what I'm talking about.

Ep 1- The cuts to Manticore, I'm very sure it's her|him but I'm happy to be wrong, dead.

In Ep 1 when I first saw the cuts I first thought 《Another girl has been killed but she's strung up and only two people are know to use strings = Boogiepop and Girl-in-OP, who I can tell which person that is》but then Boogiepop said she didn't do shit... now that was were my investment reached peek but... they introduced Manticore officially and Echoes as Manticores hunter. If they hadn't killed Echoes-owner I would have thought that First-year was the reason why but by killing off Echoes-owner that was all I needed to know that the two aliens were going to fight and if Echoes lost then Nagi was going to do it.

Ep 2 - The relationship between Manticores-owner and Blue-haired-dectective.

God was it interesting when Manticores-owner just grimaced at Nagi for no reason, it still isn't really explained properly as that was a very emotional response for a manipulative charecter, but I hate the fact that that scene was useless. Why? Because the whole reason for that scene, I know it's two seconds but it pulled me out of the show for its complete lack of subtlety, was to show a friction or conflict... a conflict that we see fleshed out in the same damn episode and with more subtle nuances as when Nagi narrowed her eyes we can tell she's onto them and they are going to have their own little story just about them but! The madman who decided that he needed to physically grimace at her in that start of the episode pulled me out of the story when you rewatch it...

Conclusion

And that's the problem with the show so far... it doesn't have any rewatch value when a problem is explained in quick succession to the problem being set.

I can understand there being somethings that you have to rewatch after finishing the season but if a mystery is explained so quickly, an episode later, then that's bad pacing.

But it's not that I hate the show in fact I would probably say that there are more positives; the OP, Direction, Background music, tone and a mystery that can be intriguing but the negatives; the pacing, the lackluster ED and the obviousness, in my shitty opinion, are way too glaring to miss.

So that's why I think this deserves a 8/10

To think that the man eater was a girl though. A drug that caused its users to run away from home huh. To think that Nagi's father is one of Suema's fav authors. Despite the image of her being a delinquent Nagi was surprisingly diplomatic. Hmm so the maneater is the cause of the vanishing girls. The relationship that she has with Masami sure is curious. So Echo's was the man with grey hair then. Despite his look it was nice seeing Naoko show kindness to him. The revelation about Echo's past sure was interesting. Poor Naoko though. An interesting episode that did well to introduce overall story and the main villain while also providing backstory for Nagi, Echos and Naoko.

I actually love the first two episodes (this episode more) as it feels unique, maybe I will give the original anime a try (I am aware that this one is a adaptation of the source while the previous one is original).

Animation is not bad, just a lot of still shots.

Yes but what is so great about them? Out of all these edgy songs they write, as far as I am concerned and I am might be extremely prejudiced, they only got as "great" and popular because of, well, Overlord.

The anime has its own issues when adapting the LN. Like the user who quoted me earlier said, sometimes it doesnt work quite well in anime form.

I decided that I would Only Pick Up 5 Anime This Season so that I can watch some stuff from my PTW and On Hold Lists. I'm Glad Boogiepop was One of them.

I have been liking the show so far. I was Kind of Skeptical when It was First Announced because I thought that it was a Secuel to the Original Boogiepop Anime that Came out 19 years ago but I decided to pick it up when People Told me it was a Reboot technically. I think I won't regret Picking this one up.

Once you look back and jot everything in order down and rearrange the scenes in order it makes sense just need epiosde 3 to fill in the other blanks

We got a non-linear story-line going on here..

So many characters got introduced in this episode. That parallel situations and occurrences were good though. Waiting for next episode..

pretty good so far. i mean, it's not anywhere near the tone and atmosphere of the older "adaptation" (not related to the LN), plus the animation's kinda crappy (not surprised though, they must be in a real tight budget since the books are little known), but hey, it's still miles away from your usual seasonal anime bullshit and mediocre LN adaptations. not a big fan of the op though, the book was filled with old rock references, plus saotome likes the doors.

It only answered some of the mysteries. One of the bigger ones I can think of that was "explained" is the origins of Echoes but should we really believe in the girl that doesn't even know where she got the explanation from?

Me neither.
And I still can't make any sense why the series (not a show) is supposed to have any "rewatch" value at all. You are not supposed to re-watch things. Unless you are. Nothing indicates you are supposed to here.

It was really interesting. The first episode left a bit bland impression and I'm glad we have a chance to watch the second right away. All the pieces just clicked. Didn't find it difficult to follow or rather, connecting the dots. On the contrary, it's an additional fun really. Looking forward to what comes next.

It's becoming clear to me that we'll see the story in a nonlinear fashion and probably learn how all the characters are important and fit into the story as it goes on, even Takeda and his relationship with Boogiepop.

Echoes came from space to test humanity and see if they are good people. Government immediately caught him and cloned him poorly, the clone's will was probably altered and the clone man-eater is on the run from the government after killing the entire faculty he was put in. I assume he let Echoes live for some reason or Echoes escaped too.

I was wondering why Kirima and Miyashita were fighting so much in the opening and I assumed it was because Boogie Pop helped man-eater but now we know she helped Echoes and not man-eater. At first I was very very confused how she said the problem was solved and I didn't have to do anything, but now I'm thinking that was a flash forward and that was after Kirima took down man-eater. The growth Takeda felt is now very understandable and that was a cool choice!

Man-eater is quite interesting, the monster type is nothing new we've seen it in Parasyte and Devilman but the way it has tons of humanity and is being tricked and controlled by a much more monstrous human than itself is a nice twist. We saw Echoes cry and man-eater show jealousy. Cool.

So, Saotome or whatever sided with man-eater as he was being choked, he jumped at the opportunity to use someone like him even while being choked to death. He acted as the brains, went on that date we saw in the first episode, drugged Akiko, used her as a slave to drug the other girls and use them as slaves as a way to ruling the world. The only one left is Kyouko who Suemo is helping out and that led her to getting involved with Kirima.

Kirima knew the girl who took in Echoes and what was going on so when she was killed she knew it must have been the man-eater. They were already friends and Kirima believed her but I believe this sparked her investigation to the degree its on now.

Everyone still stands out as pretty one note right now outside of man-eater who has tons of emotion but at least Kirima and Suemo are fun little detective girls!

And overall the idea of humanities judge immediately being modified into humanity's worst weapon says a lot about what kind of message this is going to be. I like how we saw kindness and evil so far, even if Saotome is a bit much. I hope he ends up having some decent motives because right now he's just dislikable, but he does give me Ryou vibes from Devilman so who knows!!! Also, I imagine this entire anime will cover different perspectives of this incident and we'll probably even see Echoes and Saotome's so I look forward to everyone getting some time to shine if I'm right.

Sadly, it`s pretty rushed. Seems like they want to put several novels into one season, a lot staff is skipped. But overall not bad, especially this evil couple. They are just adorable, in novel I loved them, like them here as well. One of the most sympathetic villains in anime, in my opinion.

Soo... let me get this straight.

Episode 1

Main character's a guy named Takeda. The girl he was gonna go on a date with suddenly got possessed by a being called Boogiepop who appears to stop justice or something along those lines. Boogiepop comforted a crying disheveled man that most people simply looked away from (which I assume is some sort of social commentary and possibly one of the main themes of the show). Boogiepop specifically came to fight a man-eater who's in one of the students. We find out that a few girls are "running away"/disappearing, Boogiepop is also the name of a rumored killer, and that Kirima Nagi might also be a killer.

Boogiepop then announces that the problem got fixed on its own, so now he/she/it's gotta disappear since he/she/it's now useless. Takeda doesn't like this because he knows that there are still problems. Boogiepop responds by telling him that they've got to fix their own problems. (I'm not exactly sure how to interpret Boogiepop's line). Boogiepop disappears causing, in turn, Takeda's date to come back. Kirima Nagi, possible murderer, seems to recognize Takeda's date.

Episode 2

Actually, Takeda's not MC.

Suema gets asked by scared girl for some advice about her disappearing friends. She also asks for accompaniment because she's scared of Kirima Nagi. Suddenly, she gets jumped on by Kirima Nagi in a latex action uniform.

Turns out, the guy who teased Takeda in the start of the first episode is friends with the "man-eater" who can also take the forms of those she eats. That guy's probably evil and sides with the man-eater because he wants to rule the world or some shit.

We then go to scared girl before she got jumped. Apparently, her friends who've been disappearing got some drugs from Akiko beforehand. Akiko then disappeared herself.

Suema visits Kirima Nagi to find out she's not an evil killer but in fact the opposite, some sort of justice fighter who defeats abberations. She mentions the word "Manticore" and "Echoes" when she jumped scared girl, but doesn't explain herself to Suema. She seems to think scared girl's the Manticore. Nagi also reveals that she was suspended for some reason and that it ends tomorrow.

We then see Manticore girl and evil bro spying Kirima Nagi, saying some stuff which implies that they're wary of her.

We then jump to the past (I think) where Manticore girl is kissing an unconscious girl. Asshole boy walks in on her and Manticore girl freaks out and attacks him. Asshole boy gets a bit evil and says that he'll side with Manticore girl.

We then go to Asshole boy getting a date request from Akiko who turns out to be the girl he was hanging out with at the start of the first episode. They have their date, probably also at the same time as the start of the first episode. He drugs her and takes her to Manticore girl who she makes her slave (by kissing her). Akiko then becomes a mindless slave who literally cries drugs. It's her brain cells that produce the drugs she's been giving out to people. Still not kinda sure what those drugs do, but I assume it's what Manticore girl injects into girls' bodies when she kisses them. Manticore girl then seems to be falling in love with evil boy.

Turns out, Manticore girl kinda sucks at making slaves. Sometimes they end up acting weirdly and walking strangely, and sometimes they don't wake up at all. Manticore girl gets self-conscious but asshole boy comforts her.

One day, Kirima Nagi comes in, suspicious of asshole boy and asking about his date with Akiko. She then gets suspended because of cigarettes she's carrying.

Manticore girl gets stressed and straight up kills a girl who wandered in who was looking for Echoes. Turns out, Echoes is also manticore, specifically the original one. Manticore girl is just a clone of him by the good old secret evil government weapon research agency.

We then jump back even more. Turns out, Echoes is the crying guy from the start of episode one that gets helped out by Boogiepop who realizes that Echoes is finding something. He gets picked up and sheltered by the girl who got killed in the previous scene. Apparently, that girl understood what he was thinking (since Echoes can only repeat what other people say and the girl has some superpower or some shit) and also knows Kirima Nagi who she talks to. Turns out, Echoes is a fucking alien meant to test mankind but fucked up due to evolution or some shit and gets captured by a government agency. (Who are they to test mankind when they can't even get themselves in order?). It's revealed Kirima Nagi got herself suspended to talk with Echoes (I don't really get why she had to get herself suspended).

We cut back to Manticore girl just after she killed the girl who helped Echoes. She's really stressed and asshole boy comforts her. We cut again to find out they disposed of her corpse.

Kirima Nagi tries to get Echoes to talk about why the girl who helped him disappeared, but he doesn't talk.

Now, is there any important detail I missed?

I felt like this was the kinda show I have to listen very closely to (just like Kara no Kyoukai).

- The disappearances of the girls get interpreted as girls "running away" and the student council make not of this in their meeting.
- Takeda confronts Boogiepop who explains that she's a split personality of his date who suddenly appeared to stop justice or something. They talk a few more times, presumable over the course of days.
- As the rumors of the disappearances become more prevalent, Scared Girl approaches Suema and explains how her friends disappeared because Akiko was handing them drugs. We know that these drugs and the disappearances are caused by Manticore Girl.
- On their way home, Scared Girl gets jumped by Kirima Nagi in latex who thinks she's Manticore Girl. Kirima Nagi however realizes she's innocent then buggers off.
- Suema then visits Nagi's home, realizing Nagi's on the side of justice. She asks for an explanation, but she barely gets any. Suema reveals that her suspension ends the following day.
- After presumably a couple more things happened, Boogiepop tells Takeda that the problem got fixed on its own so now she has to disappear. Takeda's date comes back like normal.
- As Takeda and his date leave school, Nagi comes over to Takeda's date. Nagi recognizes her and asks to shake hands.

That's what I gathered from these two episodes. Am I accurate?

As the last episode was entirely chronological (I think, I'm not even sure anymore lol) this episode's non-linear narrative... is a surprise to be sure, but a welcome one.

I'm glad the boring male character from last episode didn't remain the MC, as he really wasn't much...

Hopefully it doesn't fall into the problems that Steins;Gate 0 faced where you know what's gonna happen, as we know that the Manticore is most likely going to die, and somehow Nagi is going to become aware of the girl Boogiepop possessed, as we saw that in the first episode.
But Boogiepop is so unpredictable and confusing, maybe it doesn't matter? Haha

Well... That was interesting, to say the least. Seems like it's going to go the Kara no Kyoukai route of non-linear storytelling.

Boogiepop herself is pretty interesting. However, the male MC is pretty boring so far. Hopefully, he doesn't remain like that for the rest of the show.

I like the music. Really contributes to the eerie atmosphere the OP is also pretty food too.

Confusing yet intriguing.

Didn't realize this show is from 2000, I will probably go and watch the original version at some point.

I was very confused as to what was going on after the 1st episodes but now things make a lot more sense after watching the 2nd.

I am quite into this, I like the mystery and drama and I am very interested to see what happens next.

It`s not the original. It`s spin-off from first original novel, which is covering exactly what we see in anime right now, so I would recommend watching show from 2000 after this arc is over.

In chronological order:

- Manticore Girl is discovered by asshole boy. They partner up.
- Asshole boy takes Akiko on date, planning to drug her and make her Manticore Girl's drug slave.
- Meanwhile, Takeda is waiting for his date who takes till evening to come. His date does end up coming, however she's now Boogiepop. Boogiepop helps out Echoes who's crying and came out of nowhere. Boogiepop knows that Echoes is looking for something and comforts him. Boogiepop then chastizes the crowd for not helping him then beats up a police officer allowing Echoes to escape.
- Later that night, Echoes gets picked up by Naoko who can understand everything he's saying.
- Naoko goes to Kirima Nagi explaining that he's an alien sent to test mankind but got captured and cloned. Kirima Nagi then decides to get herself suspended to talk with Echoes.
- The next day:
- Manticore Girl tries to makes more slaves, however she's not amazing at it, so she ends up having to kill some. Manticore Girl seems increasingly stressed and becomes emotionally reliant on Asshole Boy.
- Kirima Nagi then approaches Asshole Boy, asking him about Akiko, his date with her, and her strange behavior. She then gets herself suspended with cigarettes.
- Manticore Girl gets stressed by Kirima Nagi's suspicion and she talks about this with Asshole Boy in a storeroom.
- Naoko then comes in looking for Echoes. Her mentioning of Echoes freaks out Manticore Girl and she swiftly kills her. Manticore Girl then explains to Asshole Boy that she's actually a government clone of Echoes.
- Nagi then confronts Echoes who doesn't seem to be talking.

Great UFC bugs gif.
Yes, more or less. Between the last two lines and the rest of it, it seems there is an episode or two, in which other resolve the whole Echoes thing without Boogiepop. We can see Manticore hanging from the cords, guess someone stopped him.

Very dull and boring...
The original is way better.
This series is giving me that nasty Kino's Journey 2017 vibes already.

As a fan of the LN, I legitimately think that this adaptation is mediocre or maybe even worse. It cuts a lot of detail, like A LOT. For you who haven't read the novel you might feel this anime is rushed af, you're not wrong.
As you might've noticed, the story is told in a non linear fashion. Which is cool in the LN, but not in this adaptation. In the LN, you are presented with a story told from different character's perspective. Each adds pieces little by little to build a story, like a puzzle if you want to call it that way. These things exist in this anime, but ended up being a clusterfuck instead of an amazing storytelling technique rarely seen in anime these days.
Point being, this anime is rushed, poorly produced, and hard to follow for non LN reader. I swear the LN is much much better so go read that instead.

I am really liking it so far and i do like the art of the anime tbh

Not as confusing as some may say

Great op and i like the ed's visuals

But i do Hope that the format of showcasing the events in a non chronological order will appear to have a better use later on

Based on muzashi's words it seems that in the LN that format did serve a greater purpose unlike those 2 eps but nonetheless it did add to the charm of the anime and the anime may get better later on at using this format and at exploiting its full potentiel

Having a bit of trouble telling some of the characters apart at the moment- it might just be because so many got introduced all at once, but I'm not sure the designs are distinct enough either. It took me a bit to realize the brown-haired guy helping the manticore was not the same brown-haired guy who talked to Boogiepop.

...I gotta learn some names too.

Otherwise, it was pretty intriguing. It's got an awesome soundtrack, for sure. I'm a little worried about the animation, but it wasn't bad enough to put me off entirely if the story continues to pull me in.

This right here. I also thought the brown haired dudes were the same guy at first until they mentioned his name. However this show is pretty interesting I hope things get a little more understandable in the upcoming episodes

Well this episode was a little better but I still feel like I'm missing a lot of details. Things are moving along too fast, for a lot of things I have no idea what's going on. And not in the good way. Animation is still decent at best and I'm having a hard time telling the different characters apart, but I guess that is something I'll be able to do once I watch the show more. Now for some questions:

- Why is this guy helping the man-eater girl and why did she not kill him? Because he simply said he would help her? Really?
- If they kill a bunch of people in that room, how come nobody is noticing? Surely someone must see the blood. Are we supposed to assume that these guys cleaned everything up perfectly?

I don't have any issues with the non-linear storytelling but when they just throw random stuff at me with little to no details it's very difficult to get interested in the story. For now this anime is still at the level of "meh". Let's see if it gets more interesting once we get more information.
It's only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer.
