Legendary Entertainment, a subsidiary of the Chinese conglomerate Wanda Group, announced a live-action film based on Kouhei Horikoshi's superhero manga Boku no Hero Academia (My Hero Academia) on Wednesday. Alex Garcia (Godzilla) and Jay Ashenfelter (Pacific Rim: Uprising associate producer) will supervise the film for Legendary, with the manga's editor Ryousuke Yoritomi on behalf of Shueisha. Toho will handle the film's distribution in Japan.

Boku no Hero Academia began its serialization in Weekly Shounen Jump in July 2014. Shueisha published the 20th volume on September 4, with the 21st volumes planned for a December 4 release. The manga currently has a cumulative 17 million copies of its compiled volumes in circulation.

Studio Bones produced the 13-episode first anime season in Spring 2016, followed by two 25-episode seasons in Spring 2017 and Spring 2018, respectively. The 13th and 14th volumes included two OVA episodes in April and June last year. An anime film featuring an original story premiered in Japan on August 3, grossing over 1.5 billion yen. A fourth season is currently in production.

VIZ Media licensed the manga in English under its Shounen Jump imprint in February 2015 and has since been publishing the series in their digital Weekly Shonen Jump magazine. The 15th volume went on sale on October 2. Funimation licensed the anime series in North America and shipped the first season on a Blu-ray and DVD volume last April. The second season was released in two volumes on April 3 and June 5 earlier this year.

Legendary's lineup of upcoming films include Pokémon: Detective Pikachu, a joint production with Warner Bros. and Toho based on the titular video game and Godzilla: King of the Monsters, a sequel to the 2014 American reboot of the franchise; both of which are scheduled to premiere next year on May 10 and 31, respectively. Godzilla vs. Kong, a crossover sequel, is in pre-production for a May 2020 release. The company is also co-producing a live-action Gundam film with animation studio Sunrise.

I don't think I'll like it, but if they cast Michael Cera as Deku I'd be sort of fine with it.

I honestly don’t see how they can make this a success, especially considering how Death Note fared.

let's just put this in the best of scenarios. the movie is confirmed as the next slot in the MCU.

it would still flop.

and no, not because "whoitewaush!!!111!1!1!1!1!1!1!1!1!1111!1!1!1!1!1!1" or "miscasts!!!!!" but because even with the best screenwriter on earth anime just can't fit into live action. that's why it's in the form of animation.

i wouldn't be surprised if this movie killed the franchise, but it's not that well known in the west so that's more of a reach.

These American live-action adaptations are pretty much never good, but go ahead Hollywood, keep making this kind of shit. Don't bother learning your lesson from past failures, just keep going until you get the one that's actually somewhat good. These properties are in the manga/anime format for a reason, and I highly doubt this one will translate over to live-action well.
People on MAL refuse to actually enjoy watching anime.

Your taste in anime isn't a personality trait.

MAL is literally just anime Twitter as its own website lol.

I mean super hero movies are in vogue right now, but I don't think MHA being a super hero work will save it from being shit, especially when a movie length isn't enough to do anything meaningful without grossly deviating from the source material, which they will do because its a hollywood adaption.

That was over a decade ago. At least bring up something not only more recent but much more of a failure like Ghost in the Shell, and it's 100+ million dollar budget that they didn't make back.

Ya'll get so bent out of shape over every live action announcement. Honestly who cares. If it's shit it's shit. Doesn't change that the original still exists. All it will have accomplished was bringing more fans and revenue to the original work. Getting angry that a live action version of any anime even gets made is asinine.

I highly doubt it will kill off the franchise, that's just unbelievable. One: its an American movie & so it has not much bearing in Japan, & two: by that logic Dragon Ball or for a more recent example Ghost in the Shell shouldn't be a thing in the U.S. after their movies bombed but it hasn't majorly effected the two franchises much.

Fuck no.

Every fucking time Hollywood puts its hands on an anime production the result is always a calamity.

Not expecting anything from this. Moreover, even if it turns to be mildly good, I'm not going to watch it, simply because I hate live actions from shounens. Seinens are more adaptable, but in shounens it just never works.

Hahahaha another trainwreck incoming.

Why do these retarded suits can't understand that part of the charm in anime is that you don't need real life actors, meaning that you can get teenagers and lolis to perfectly act the way the director wants them to. Special effects and cinematic angles come in second.

Good luck finding all of that in a live action movie.

I don't watch as much anime as before...

I'm not surprised.

While I'm not a MHA fan, I can see why it's so popular. It's a classic "school story" like Harry Potter, Percy Jackson and to a degree X-Men (because of the mutants in training), in the awesome shonen action anime style.

Let's see how close to the story the West can get this adaptation to be. And how awesome the Quirks will be.

ghost in the shell isn't an ongoing series. same for DBZ when the movie came out, S wasn't even announced.
