Look the fact that the MC looks land behaves like Mugen and the setting is like Cowboy Bebop is already enough to think this will be favourite show of the season. Plus the killer soundtrack tho.

I predict a MAL score above 8.6 just because all the old school fans will see this as Bebop 2.0. Join the hype train with me.

If its a fraction as good as Ashita no Joe was in the 70s but now in the 2010s, then yeah, its going to be a classic.

Indeed I think you are right. I am impressed so far as someone who hasn't really watch sports anime before. I strongly agree about the soundtrack and setting, I'd looked at Hajime no Ippo and didn't feel like trying but Megalo Box looked interesting.Megalo Box & Cowboy Bebop's settings remind me of FF7's kind of stylish sci-fi futuristic dystopia.

I'd never have guessed beforehand this would potentially be anime of the season but who knows, it actually potentially might. Will be super difficult due to Steins Gate 0 & MHA season 3. But anime of the season for spring 2018 could be likely for AotY since it'll pretty much be spring 2018 vs Attack on Titan Season 3.

It's a good show with good soundtrack but nothing special though, plus 13 episodes make it hard to have nearly as close good story as the ones people are comparing it with.
But hey Im ready to be surprised with what they got in store for us O.o
Sanity... what would I do with a useless thing like that?

I think this is just the popular show if the season and appeals to mainstream in both japan and west, it seemed to be pretty hyped anyway and has a tie to one of the biggest shounen ever.

the dark horse id say maso-tan or something, really creative show that no one is watching and is willing to watch but is really good and hopefully gaining some traction. Though i guess it wont be the dsrk horse cause itll totally bomb.

Megalo Box is a bomb in Japan. BD sales are going to be awful (less than 1k) and doesn't look like many people is watching it either.

jeez japanese anime-watchers make me sad. credit to MAL for allowing shows like this to gain traction and skyrocket in popularity (not saying this will, but it's happened to stuff in the past so could happen here)

I am liking this a damn lot, but in no way is this a dark horse. A dark horse would not be close to a 8.5 rating this soon in MAL.

bds dont really matter they are kind of just a money maker if they do, its the ratings it gets for tv that really decides it depending on the station hence why stuff like sangatsu no lion was one of the most successful anme in years so much so it actually ended up being used in government funded anti-bullying programs despite jack shit in way of bd sales

of course i dont know if megalo is actually getting good ratings. I still wouldnt call something that has ties to one of the most recognizable and arguably the single most influental manga ever a dark horse, doesnt seem like much was riding against it.

Sangatsu no Lion is a mainstream manga that sell over a million per volume (probably the best selling seinen at the moment) whereas Megalo Box is a spin-off of a 50 year old manga.

I do not think you can compare the popularity of those two works even if Ashita no Joe was a great success in the past. Most fans are already in their 60s or 70s and it's very unlikely that they are watching this anime.

I may be wrong but my impression is that the anime is going unnoticed in Japan. Additionally, the Twitter account of the anime has very few followers (10k) compared to other animes of this season like Golden Kamuy (55k) or Gun Gale Online (76k). Even Hisone to Masotan has more followers.

Maybe they didn't want to give it a chance? MAL score put the show in my mind and on a whim I gave it a try.

Still kind of showed up out of nowhere. I'd seen it in preview articles for spring 2018 anime season but just figured "meh probably gonna be some 5/6/7 that's not worth my time". My impression was that there's some good ideas but unproven, not based on a proven to be good existing manga(manga is brand new too) and I am unfamiliar with the studio other than they make Detective Conan. There are plenty of tribute/spiritual successor type things but it isn't necessarily a guarantee of quality unless perhaps the original acclaimed people are involved.

But it far surpassed my expectations so far. I actually feel the 8.5 is spot on so far, I didn't put a rating yet because I'm split between 8 & 9. Retro 90's anime style, Cowboy Bebop kind of setting are all fantastic ideas but IMO difficult to fully deliver upon. So far they have delivered.

@VersusX

There was hype regarding its relationship with the Ashita no Joe franchise, but the issue is what came immediately after the first episode was released. It has kept its high rating from the very beginning, and everyone in Twitter and anitube went crazy for this.

This show may have been a dark horse at some point, but definitely not while airing. When I think of dark horses I think of last season's Sora yori and Yuru Camp that took more than half of their run to surpass the 8 mark in MAL. With numbers bordering 8.5 from the very first episode, Megalo Box has guaranteed critical success from the very beginning.
