This was a great example of an episode that is objectively slow, with few cuts and lots of static scenes that manages the be engaging, beautiful and compelling. I really wish more shows were paced like this.

Everyone will be relevant again at some point. The first few episodes are just world building really. Next arc will actually introduce our main villain, if you ever wondered who was the creepy humming guy from the trailers, yeah, that's him.

Will Chise learn how to actually fight? Or at least, do something?

Well, she won't be a magus' apprentice for nothing.

I literally said in my original post that the fantasy elements themselves and Elias's design, are fucking cool.

Liking one character design is a pretty small thing. You can't blame me for thinking you dislike the show when you wrote multiple paragraphs of complaints.

This was beautiful. The way they presented the dragon's death and how they deal with it was interesting and amazing.
The little dragons! I want to be Lindel's apprentice, I wanna play with the dragons too :(
I don't see anything bad about this show, if it goes like this I gonna rate it a 20.
Really, what a beautiful episode :')
(Harry Potter, watch out, this magic world is seeing a lot more interesting to me right now)

I SEE CATS NEXT WEEK. *-*

And about the Old Dragon's death...it happened mostly to introduce the discussion about death, to put this parallel in what humans think of death and other species, in this case the dragons, how they see and understand it. Death is actually a taboo theme for some people, most don't really like talking about and it is, apparently, important to Chise's character as well (her mom's suicide, her own attempt, she maybe not gonna last that long). So, we don't really need 878737428778 episodes with the Old Dragon, his character was not that important per se, but the message and discussion they were trying to convey there, about living and dying. But, that is just my opinion on the matter.

I also said that I really liked the fantasy elements.
And I also wrote about 1 paragraph, which consisted of only 2 long sentences, so it hardly qualifies as a paragraph, when a paragraph is expected to be at least 3 sentences.

There was a movie premiered in theaters many people went to see the first three episode like a teaser. So yes you can think of it as a rerun.

Except for the flight scene, quite static, the rest of the narration was fabulous. So many tears and feelings I felt during the vision. I hope that in the home version, improve the drawings and redraw some scenes, making it more spectacular.

This episode gave me some feels admittedly I felt like tearing up a little bit I'm not sure why to be honest. However it just makes me look forward to the next episode! the story is interesting, the art is beautiful and very colorful and I would have to say my favorite scene was when she was flying in and out side of the dream it really showed off the art for this show.

When is the animation in this episode actually good? I haven't seen any. The animation is very limited and uninspired. Only the art is pretty. In the entire episode there is very little movement that is worthy of note. And even in the part with more animation, they don't stand out. It's not just a single scene. You can clearly see that animation isn't all that presence throughout the whole episode.

So what if I'm in the extreme minority? I care about quality, what's wrong with that? Why are you so keen at harping on me anyway?

How many years will it take for the anime community to realize that Japanese animation is limited, even by limited animation standards?
In any anime, the only movements (when there isn't a comedy/action scene) are either mouths flapping, or small boring movements like characters walking.

I should've played a drinking game when watching this episode to count how many shots there were where literally nothing moved.

Then how do you explain Garo? Yuri on Ice? Made in Abyss? Death Parade? Baccano!? Madoka? Ufo Fate? Kaiba? Girl's Last Tour? Zodiac War? Kino? etc.

Any of those have better animation than what Mahoutsukai no Yome has shown capable so far. Just because TV anime have more limited animation doesn't mean it doesn't count. Especially when there are plenty of shows in the same medium that has done it better. At least some other shows make up for it with interesting animation and framing. This one hasn't done any of that.

Best episode yet and now it is safe to say this will probably be AOTS. I hope this episode quiets all the people calling this anime overrated or over hyped.

Try watching any of those anime you listed (didn't watch Yuri, Kaiba) without the subtitles. Because according to you, "interesting animation" consists of mouths flapping, the exact same generic hand gestures and blinking you see in every anime.
Any movement you see in anime that does not consist of an action/comedic scene, will 99% of the time be the exact same movement you've seen in any other anime.

Hell, Digibro even called out on this in his Kill la Kill video.

I'm not complaining about it every week. Besides, are you really that delicate that you can't stand opinions that don't allign with yours? Are you telling me that this show has been perfect so far that any criticisms is unwarranted? You can criticize it if you want, just come up with actul criticism. Saying the animation is shit when it obviously isn't, is not a criticism. Plus, just because you back your claims up, doesn't mean they're actually good complaints. If your reasoning is bad, then so is your argument.

This episode was very enjoyable. The dragons were fascinating, both the small hatch-lings as well as Nervin. His dream sequence with Chise was beautiful, in both sound and animation.

I hope Chise is okay, as she did faint at the end of the episode. I'm sure she'll get stronger, both mentally and physically, as the series goes on.

One surprisingly funny part was the dragon that carried Chise to the dragon haven itself. After being told to drop Chise, it simply threw her into the lake. XD

Brilliant episode. It was a surprising start and I wasn’t expecting the comedy moment when Chise was dropped into the water.

So many beautiful scenes in this. The Land of The Dragons was incredible and the story with Nevin made this a real winner. Hard to believe this was all put together in a single episode to be honest. Loved it.

This is so boring, everything is so boring, I just don't get the point of this anime. there is nothing remarkable about it. every single comments here are basically "WOW PRETTY COLOR". I guess there is 1 good thing here, which is the spanish guitar style part in the opening theme, though the singer sucks real bad.

I guess this is just another overhyped scenery porn and pretty color a.k.a "wow the book cover is so good"

I'm so happy that they did Linden and Nevin's introduction arc justice. It's one of my favorite scenes and parts of the series, so poignant yet uplifting at the same time.

What is the music for the flight scene? I really want to listen to more of it.

That was a really cool little episode. I like the show's interpretation of dragons. It was different enough to be interesting. But still recognizably rooted in common dragon lore. This episode also had some gorgeous animation. The final flight dream obviously was a stand out. But it was consistently beautiful throughout. This seems like such a simple show but I'm really enjoying it. Even as it clumsily tries to pique our interest about the "sleigh beggy." And indulges in melodrama that damn near romanticizes suicide. It's just a prettily animated show with great music. And immediately recognizable and likable characters. Can't wait for more.

This episode had amazing presentation, a touching story, the same beautiful animation that ive come to expect now and it flew by so fast because of how engrossed i was in it. The further the show goes the more interested i am becoming and the more i find this world and these characters to be interesting and fleshed out. I even have decided to look into the manga now because of the ova's and these first few episodes. I cant wait to see if it keeps improving upon all the good will its shown me so far and turns into a favorite, which i can see happening more and more as each ep passes. Quoting this whole thread, rather than one particular person. My thoughts are that this medium is meant to tell a story. That comes first. If it was being entered into a animation contest, perhaps the critiques would be valid, but just because it's called "animation" doesn't mean it needs people dancing around in the background during a somber scene so you can have your fill of "movement." It doesn't matter how technical the animation was, what matters is that it conveyed the story, and for that it had exactly the right amount of everything, in my opinion. Yes, the book/manga is always better, but in that case, don't watch the anime. No matter what, it will never live up to your expectations, because the imagination is better than any animation, always. Anime is primarily made to inspire people to go find the source material and purchase/read it, not really the other way around.

You're saying that the animation quality hardly matters...in animation.
That's like saying acting, doesn't matter in a movie.

"doesn't mean it needs people dancing around in the background during a somber scene"
When did anyone say anything that implied this??
Why are people on MAL so desperate to win any argument that they're willing to resort to being strawman??
A little more movement would be appreciated in a dramatic scene than literally nothing moving.
If I wanted "realism" I'd watch a live action movie or read a book.

If I wanted "realism" I'd watch a live action movie or read a book.

You're not making much sense - I'm being a strawman? Are you inferring I'm setting up a strawman to take down, rather than critique your actual views? Not quite. Reductio ad absurdum, my friend, is used to show the inevitable ridiculous end, to which your argument is headed. Your desire for unnecessary movement during a somber scene is what brought us to this point of conversation in the first place.

However, it seems in actuality that you've misrepresented my argument with a strawman in this line : "you're saying that the animation quality hardly matters...in animation."

My point, friend, was that the animation was deliberately understated during that scene, so as not to take away from the somber atmosphere.
