This show started as a boring one. Then got a bit good midway and fell flat on the ending. 5/10

I thought this was a really good last episode. The conversation between Shiki and Saikawa was kinda funny, and I guess she got away in the end huh :P I get why I was so confused between the voices now, it was the difference between Shiki and her daughter. The parts with Saikawa and Moe were really enjoyable, I liked how he was telling her a story about her father. That ending was ... hmm. I guess the tone was overall good and I guess yes, Shiki's still definitely a little crazy but ... yeah. I'm still not quite sure how she got out and came back as "Miki" though, maybe I need to give this another watch :P

I liked the storytelling and the characters, and the mystery/twists were good, and the animation and music were very enjoyable, but I still felt a little confused about the whole thing ... it was definitely fun to watch, but I feel like I don't really "get" what the anime was trying to say if that makes sense? Maybe I need to give this a rewatch sometime later ... anyway I think the main part that bothered me was Shiki, like nobody ever really "got" why she did what she did which is what I thought was gonna happen D: Overall though, coming in mostly blind and only knowing this was gonna be a mystery, I thought it was fairly enjoyable, especially the way that it told the story and the way its characters were. 7/10

Glad I watched this after it was airing, I actually found the first 2 episodes boring but it constantly took up my attention that I can say that I enjoyed almost every bit of the anime. 8/10 for me

Ends on a really nice final episode. It's a lot calmer. It's the reason I raised this from 1 to 3.
Can't believe I liked the whole stretch of sensei talking to Nishinosono

Shiki has appeared.
That's right, Shiki. Throw away the cigarette.
LMFAO Shiki got away...not that she was captured. lol
Gido is Saikawa's imouto. Wow.
Dat mother daughter scene.
Dat ending.

And that was the end. Awesome series simply because it allowed incest to be wincest. We need more shows like that. Also, OP/ED songs too good.

With that said...Magata Shiki wa tensai da.
If you see that my post is exactly 1 month old (or more) from when it was posted... Don't waste your time, especially when you want to reply with something petty & insignificant. Assume that I've moved on (because I have).

The epilogue felt good after the prev ep revelation. A difficult show to properly appraise while having good plot and characters but a bit illogical. The shit happens with no clear goals, like it exists for a detective mystery unraveling. Still 7/10

Nice, slow-paced and enjoyable. A really good change of pace from the anime I've been watching lately.

It took me a few minutes to get the ending, but I appreciate it. It's nice for things to not be super obvious.

I'd have to rewatch to really appreciate the philosophy bits.

BTW for anyone curious, the place Moe and Saikawa are walking around in the end is a place called, "Meijimura". Basically a "town" of (famous) buildings from the Meiji era, really cool place to go if you're in Nagoya area.

Too bad Magata didn't kill herself or handed herself to the police. This series sucked big time, no wonder the rating is so low I guess people with sense rated low as deserved. The characters were lame I wanted to really kill them myself and the mystery was lame. I knew from the middle that Shiki did it to escape, especially when they mentioned freedom. The only surprise was the daughter although the idea was far fetched and very desperate from the writer. Nothing was an eye opener for me, because even my little sister guessed everything right when I showed her.

Even the so called sister was a see through that it was really Magata. Oh God don't get me started on those long stupid dialogues and views she told Saikawa and Moe, those were boring and senseless. As a villain I wasn't impressed thank God I finished this bad rubbish with a rubbish mystery.

3/10.

The ending monologue by Shiki at the end about humanity and their constant will to find happiness and the answer to everything was amazing, especially considering the fact that her daughter supposedly killed herself, or was at least suicidal.

The backgrounds in this episode really stood out. They finally had some new material to work with now that they weren't stuck in a single location, lol.

7,5/10. This was a very interesting mystery and it kept me guessing throughout. I liked the theme of different perspectives and the way how there's so many clues spread throughout the show. It caused to actively participate into solving the mystery.

Like I've said before, I don't dislike Moe, but I do think she adds a bit too much padding to the show. 11 episodes is not long, but honestly, it could've and should've been shorter. There's also no big WOW moment halfway through the story. The second act could've used some kind of a banger.

Animation was great though. The soundtrack was a banger as well.

Overall I did liked the cold atmosphere, interesting artstyle/color design and engaging main lead chemistry but the mystery element was so terribly underwhelming. S-e-r-i-o-u-s-l-y! Not to mention the payoff is not rewarding as how ridiculous plot device turns out to be. Even watching this show with low expectation still somehow managed to left me disppointed sigh.

Also this show gave me somewhat "B: the beginning" vibes especially the two main lead but this show feels like could have been worked with 4 ova episode 30 minute length. 11 episode was somewhat waste of time or makes it almost impossible to revisit this show.

As an average fan of Agatha Christie and crime genre in general, I was anticipating that this closed room crime set-up will be a thrill to my taste. I admit I was lost at some parts, had to pause for a while to read and digest what is being explained, especially when numbers are involved. In the end, it's not as exciting as I thought it would. But despite that, I'm not too disappointed in the phasing of the story at all. It began slowly, leveled up in the mid, and ended just enough that you don't crave for a continuation.

I really liked Saikawa-sensei's character. He's a genius but still on the normal spectrum, good at decision-making, and although he's emotionally unavailable with Moe, he still respects her. Moe's okay, she's just cringe-worthy when talking with/about Saikawa. I guess I'll ship them if she's not that into Saikawa. I love their humor, though. I remember on one episode, Saikawa asked Moe about the difference of two things (I forgot what), and Moe replied "the numbers of alphabet" loool. Shiki's fucked up.

Also plus half a point because I discovered yet another great Jband through anime, KANA-BOOM

Overall, 8.5/10.

It was a decent mystery with some interesting conversations. Unfortunately it follows the path of a lot of other "philosophical" shows in that it got carried away by its own farts towards the end. Moe was annoying and pouty all the way through. When she went to slap Sohei for the second time in the final episode, my dislike for her was solidified.

That talk about life and death. I agree with it. Dying is the ultimate peace. I hope that my path to it will be a painless one.

As for life, I hate it, the fact that it's so short and much of it is spent being a cog in the machine of society. It really sucks. The only time I'll ever appreciate life is if I become immortal. At that point I am free from any society and free to do anything I want. There's a lot of things I want to do, experience and observe. Infinity will never be enough.

Anyway, as for the anime. It was a decent and entertaining mystery. My main issue was the pacing. 7/10

Plot twist: Shiki actually had 2 twin daughters and killed only one of them, escaping to the desert with another one
I guess that was virtual reality or something.

The relationship between Nishinosono and Saikawa-sensei kinda progressed but at the same time it kinda stayed on the same place...she's still friendzoned x) But I enjoyed the mix. The otaku lab worker was funny as well.

I liked the op and the ed, both the music and style.
The story is nice, but I hated Nishinosono, an insufferable girl who was not of considerable importance to the story.
And the fact that no one knew what was going on in Shiki's "room" bothered me a little.

I must say, I enjoyed this show immensely! Say what you want, but I was rooting for Magata. She didn’t even consider herself to be human and you can even go as far as to say she wasn’t. She was beyond human comprehension. I enjoyed the ending and it really brought it back full circle and seemed like she now had 9 personalities at the end.

Can someone help me understand what the 'F' was going on.

I think I understand the course of events by the end. Dr Magata is alive, the daughter was murdered, Dr Magata pretended to be the non-existant sister, Dr Magata killed her uncle that was her baby daddy.
What I fail to understand is Dr Magata's motives. I know she planned for her daughter to kill her parents (Dr Magata & Shindou). Why? I read some people explaining that it was to atone for Dr Magata killing her own parents at the age of 15 or 14, whatever. 'Atone', um, Dr Magata doesn't seem like the kind of person to seek forgiveness, to express remorse or display feelings of guilt. So, why?

Secondly, why did she kill her parents to begin with? The only reason I can come to understand is because her parents did not approve of her pregnancy (perhaps they wanted an abortion). If this is correct, then I can assume Dr Magata was very determined to have her child. Why? Why would she want a child? Yes, I know most women have a natural instinct to want children, that isn't necessarily a logical desire, but an emotional one. But Dr Magata isn't normal, as we know. Did she love her child and become maternally attached the moment she found out she was pregnant?

Thirdly, and the point I am most confused about... why did she kill her daughter? I understand why the daughter did not seek to kill her mother (because she wasn't sicko but seemingly normal). So Dr Magata's plan to indoctrinate her failed. Dr Magata wont die by her daughter's hand, but what is the point in switching places? Because what I struggle to fathom most, is how she could murder her daughter that she was seemingly so determined to keep? Sick. After all, I (think) she murdered her parents in order to avoid interference with her pregnancy... Did she love the child or not? I've probably got most of this all wrong. Poor girl though, she should have been given a normal life.

Its a nice anime, but not an anime that I will watch again.

It can be very slow-paced. I really wished this had an English dub (im surprised it never had one as of the date of my comment here).

But its a nice unique anime, and I definitely recommend at least watching it once.

Great, satisfying ending. Especially the twist of the guards being fake and Shiki getting away afterall (though I thought her turn back and stare like Michael Jackson in "Thriller" was dumb and cringe).

I still don't understand the part of Seiji (the uncle) going to pick up Shiki's sister:

Did he just leave and fly around for a bit before returning and he and Shiki pretended to have just arrived? Or did he never leave at all and somehow nobody knew?

Did they plan Shiki's escape together? I don't see how when the lab tech guy said all conversations with her were public knowledge.

How did Shiki come back and kill Seiji without anybody knowing? And she apparently stabbed him while standing outside the helicopter. How did she drag him back in there without leaving any obvious evidence like a blood trail?

Overall, this was a good show. Took a while before it got interesting but it was a thrilling ride to the end.

But I didn't like how it took them so long to start doing some basic investigations (ex: they never even looked at the cart underneath the body, for all anybody knew the arms and legs were in there but they just took it for granted that they were disposed of somewhere).

Anyways, this is what I wish Un-go had been.

I enjoyed this series. I actually really liked the pacing unlike many people here, it was slow, but I found it relaxing to watch. That event where Shiki got picked up by the uncle on the roof wasn't very clear tho, but it's fine.

Well I just rewatched it, after...9 years? or so. And I actually really liked it, I guess it wasn't just my brain remembering it fondly for being one of my first seasonals. I was reading quite a few of the comments, I don't know why maybe cause I'm starting to write more in the forum lol, and yeah there's always a variety, of people that just hate anime, people that just didn't pay attention, people that really liked it but their lack of english grammar (mine isn't perfect either) just stops me from reading their essay, some other that also compare it to the live action and is a pretty nice read, and of course a lot in between. Sad I didn't find any comment from F0RMATION, I was checking the first episode threads and I loved how he was the first to predict the daughter mom theory lol. Someone refuted it by saying she would need a lot of stuff to take care of a baby, but since she's a genius I guess she could have had the tools to make them? I don't know. It's also interesting that they say she's a normal girl but also was able to carry out the conversations quite well, even if she couldn't come up with stuff herself she was a really good student I guess.

Now, one thing I was looking for people to comment on but didn't see I think, specially in the episodes where we learn the relationship with her uncle, is that she is suppose to be an unparallel genius that doesn't exist in this world. Someone did comment about how overused this trope is, i do like it a lot in Zaregoto from Nisioisin! but basically they are suppose to be in a different level, they are suppose to see stuff we don't, yet people jump to the conclusion she looks like a sick person so she is just delusional and not really smart. I remember when I was at church lessons that they told that it's impossible to understand what God is thinking since he's at a different level, we can only try to understand it. Basically I think it's like that, even if you don't believe in god I do like this way of thinking, that we have to remember what we think is but a fraction of it all, a piece of the puzzle, we don't see the full picture so it's hard to quickly make conclusions. The point of Magata Shiki is that she is far smarter than everyone else, a genius, so she sees the world in a different light, and people a lot more stuff others don't. You could just claim it's a different angle she sees and that's fine too, but I guess it's like "if you are smart enough you will want to kill yourself cause you realize there's no point to it all" something like that, that combines intellect with extreme nihilism.

But basically just like we can't know what others think, we don't know what a super genius like her sees, and why she comes with that conclusion, it's just fiction as well but I do like thinking what would a superior being with incredible intellect think, it's a nice what if. In the scenes of her uncle as well, she knows what she needs to do to manipulate him cause she's just that smart, so it's hard to blame the uncle lol. So while she did kill her parents, daughter and uncle; I do believe it's really interesting how she is free from ethics (like some commented, and how saikawa said this made her pure) so that must be quite a punch for other people watching and being disgusted by her actions and way of thinking, but basically we can't really understand her, the show also says this, that she has her way of thinking and the others have a different one. Someone also compared how Moe is basically a self insert of the viewer that is shocked by all the things Magata Shiki is capable of, that you would never do or think of doing that, which is pretty on the nose, she just can't seem to forgive her for thinking that, and a lot of people on this comment section also claim to be smart enough to know this is all stupid, it's lame writing, that she is just sick, but that's just it, she might be sick, or just be really smart and we don't really understand her behavior, but we can't just say we know why she does this, that she is just sick, put her in this box called mental illness and be like we know better.

I do like how Saikawa-sensei said "thinking the sky is pretty is actually an unnatural thing to say, a person that is really free wouldn't really think that, only someone that is often far from nature would say something like that" which I thought was a really interesting line, there's a lot of those in the show, I even loved the lectures from Moe's dad at the end, people say it's slow, maybe go watch a mecha anime lol, the conversations of this show are really cool and interesting, sometimes yes, it tries to be smarter than it is, like with math and the hexadecimal thing that I can't believe it was such a big reveal, everyone's a fucking programmer in the anime but they have to make this big exposition to the viewer that probably doesn't know what hexadecimal is lol. But I wouldn't really call it slow paced, the mystery wasn't really the point of the show, I mean there's a fucking murderer and everyone was so chill about it. But going back to the nature being normal and not beautiful, I wonder what would a person that has been in nature all they life think about it...if they meet the comforts of life, maybe they would think the city is beautiful instead, to be able to satisfy their every needs! That nature was just harsh and torture and they never think of beautiful at all! I like that think that, because I too enjoy nature but it's what Saikawa-sensei said, I enjoy it cause I'm surrounded by buildings, electronic devices and I take this break from it all to appreciate nature as beauty when it's just the normal state of life, it's like saying I enjoy breathing so much. AND, this topic is brought back at the last episode! Sensei asked Shiki what she thought of the sky when she saw it for the first time in 15 years "Nothing really" Saikawa-sensei asks "really?" and the Doctor claims he's quite sentimental lol, she literally reacted like Saikawa-sensei said she would
