Boys in romance shows tend to be pretty shallow, but I think we've got a new record here. Even ignoring the fact that the target was a woman the premise completely rubbed me the wrong way. It's like the ultimate fat shaming display, and people were suddenly nice just because she became attractive. Normally I don't get worked up about this kind of thing, but the execution was so classless that it even stirred anger in my rusty, dead heart. The only saving grace was that one dude that treated her like a normal human being and respected her from beginning to end. Unfortunately that is not enough to allow me to continue watching this.

Gotta agree with you here, unfortunately. I don't understand the point of the whole stuffy, fake "fat voice" shtick either. Nice thing near the end about not being ashamed of your interests, SORTA, but that's about it.

Will keep with it a bit longer in the hopes that they eventually shine a harsh light on those first three dudes' change in attitude, but... not getting my hopes up for that.

In all honesty I actually fucking love this, but then again this is coming from a Fujoshi fanatic so this is basically like for me. While it might not be all boys, its pretty interesting just seeing how the main female character would ship the characters, I find that refreshing in a Shoujo manga and this is something that actually pleases me.

On another note, I totally recognized one of the characters was voiced by Matsuoka again, and not gonna lie I always like it when he voices these extremely dense characters, he's excellent on that and when he's also basically very energetic and a troll. But, the entire denseness for one of the characters suits.

Btw did anyone saw the reference that the series made after the revealing about her being an Otaku? One of the main male characters mentioned Evangelion (as he said he watched anime as well, and he mentioned the series). I gotta say, good taste fam.

Overall great episode.

This was slightly less disturbing as an animation. But I can't fully let go of all the "reality weights" while watching it. It's funny, and certainly a lot more if I was able to go beyond the wall of bad things vehiculated here (I hope those elements will be crushed with humour).
The anime otaku touch might be funny, seeing that three out of four have the "normal" reaction. (btw, it seems like Evangelion is the name to give when you want to show your anime culture).

I did not really like how her hormones wake up instantly after the loss: no matter how nicely she was treated, it didn't affect her AT ALL before, then she gets excited for such small things.

3.5-/5 I'll wait to read the synopsis of later episodes to check if I'll watch it once it's finished (and then retry the manga). If not, maybe a drama will offer me a last chancebin the future.

At the end, none of those boys is well-thinking: no matter how friendly, peaceful (but without any interest), bad or disgusted they were in front of Miss Marshmallow, they instantly drooled over her 60% new body, either aggressively or while trying to look calm.
Add to that that the way the heroine is presented - a person drooling over highly fantasized homosexual relationships of the other sex - make her pretty repulsive to me. Especially because it reaches the point where she will shamelessly use real people of her environment whose opposite real sexual taste she knows to lust over imaginary things.

Some people seem to complain about the time it took her to become very slime, but the more fantasized part was where the fat was (not) taken.

5x7 are OTP.

I actually prefer the manga, because seeing this animated makes the boys seem even more shallow. Asuma is a bit better, but not by much if I recall right.
Real winner is Shima who we will meet later lol. :D

Yea Kae is cute like I remember. Love how she's in a little world of her own.

What I hate is about the manga was, how the guys were suddenly into her after seeing her with good lucks. Found that kinda shallow. Mutsumi is the only one who felt genuine. Igarashi too, to some extent. I don't give a damn to Nanashima and esp. the kohai. And I don't know how the other girl is going to fare considering I didn't reach that far in the manga.

Yay otaku heroines are good. And I'm glad that she admitted it.
Yea go for Mutsumi. Rest are fake to different extents (tho Igarashi is okay as he was nice to her before too)

The only guy I think is a respectable dude is the tall senpai guy. He was the only one that

1. Recognized her in her smaller form (not even her best friend did that)
2. Didn't want to run off on her date with her the minute she got hot (dude wanted to borrow a book lmao).
3. The first one to accept her otaku interests.
4. Showed genuine concern for her when he got hurt.

The other person is that nana dude's friend but the other two guys are straight awful lol.

TOTALLY AGREED!!!
Is it possible to find a person like that irl??
One who sees people for who they are inside rather than just their appearance.
One that isn't just nice for his own reputation/ popularity but really for others.
One that is open to accept another's flaws and appreciates them as part of the entire person.
One that just really hopes to see the other person's eyes sparkle with happiness.

It's only the first episode and I totally understand the reason for the existence of the other three guys in this show. They are there to make Mutsumi senpai look even better.

Even though the anime is not meant to be taken seriously, I still felt pretty irritated by their change in attitude towards Kae too just because her outward appearance changed. I mean changes in appearance are not permanent, what happens if one day she becomes what she originally was again? Then your love dies and she's not an important person to you anymore? If you change Kae to a guy instead, girls treat you like trash when you are not so good looking and then flock to you when you're attractive, but never really knowing the 'you' that you are. I think both ways, it still hurts.

That said, I think that one of the good points in this anime is that it's otome genre but finally with an interesting female character. Usually otome genre protagonists are passive props and the focus is mostly on the guys.

But Kae is a pretty cool person, even when she was insulted by those superficial pretty boys and laughed at in front of the class, she took it in her stride and did not let it affect her emotionally. So much so that her friend was the one who felt the injustice and tried to stand up for her. It's kind of sad that her brother also looks down on her, calls her fatty and doesn't really care about her much. Family members are sometimes the hardest to deal with because you see them every day and will always be related to them for your entire life, whether they are nice to you or not.

Also, Kae being an otaku wanted to be true to herself even if it meant not getting a boyfriend. So it think she's a pretty solid character from the first episode, but I hope that she'll not become a doormat as the anime progresses.

Team Igarashi all the way <3 I don't like Kae's voice either. Her fat version sounds waaay overboard. I know the artist tried to portray her chubby persona as a comic relief but I've never liked that. I'm glad she sounds a little better when skinny. Can't wait to see the rest.

Not as funny as I was expecting it to be.
Seeing the description I had prepared myself to see her pair up guys for the silliest of reasons like a typical fujo but I was expecting those scenes to be more comedic, it kind of made me want to punch her in the face though.

On a side note, I would have loved to see her say that's she's a "fujoshi" rather than just otaku.

And senpai is the best guy! He was kind to her even when she was chubby, immediately recognized her when she lost all that extra fat and was the first one to say that he doesn't mind her being an otaku.

Normally I watch Otome for the guys... but I feel like I'll be watching this for the heroine instead.
She's funny and actually relatable(when it comes to being a fujoshi). XD

Also her voice is tolerable, compared to most of the otome/shoujo. I was afraid they would give her a voice on par to Haruka from UtaPri or Koharu from Norn9, but Kae's sounds more natural and less girly falsetto at least. Plus I like how it changes when she goes into "fujoshi mode".

I just hope she can also disprove the girly doormat stereotype of otome, though I already like how she has personality/life/hobbies/flaws, etc.

Though, most of the guys rubbed me the wrong way, how they only seem to like her now because she's suddenly pretty... >.< Like it seemed only 2 of them were genuinely nice to her from the start, and probably out of politeness.

That's the point. It's the typical fatty voice in anime, made overly dramatic.

I didn't get it, what does "5x7" mean? "7" for "Nozomu Nanashima"? And for what is the "5"?

This kanji 五 - from Igarashi's name = 5 - it actually comes from the I in his name, so I don't blame you for not understanding where it comes from, but basically the I is written with the kanji for 5.
This kanji 七 - from Nanashima's name = 7
Therefore, Igarashi/Nanashima is 7x5 or 5x7 (or basically I/Nana XD)

Adding on: the first person in "A x B" is the dominant partner in the relationship (A in this case). That's why Kae and her friend were arguing over whether it should be 5 x 7 or 7 x 5, because each of them saw/preferred a different guy as the dominant one.

Decent first episode.(even though some parts were cringe-worthy,mostly the date part.)

I was hoping that the MC wouldn't be so affected by the guys actions, since she is a Fujoshi and I assumed that she is not interested in them romantically.

Hopefully the focus would be more on the comedy rather than the romance.

That was enjoyable and funny XD

I think ANY girl on this site could relate to Kae, if not for the fujoshi-ness, (that isn't me at all) but for the otaku tendencies.....had I been in her place in the last scene, I WOULD BREAK TOO. XD *throws cash at anime store* The Otaku-----Otome meter was a great touch too. XD

Yes, the guys are shallow (save one) but really, what teenage boys AREN'T shallow at that age? It makes sense Senpai is the least shallow one; he's older so he's more mature. lol

Also, the boys' shallow tendencies are probably supposed to be mirroring Kae's own. And Kae is definitely just as shallow. She ships the guys because they are hot.. (I can't picture her shipping two fat/ugly guys because she values their relationship or anything) So the message of the series is "Oh so you like fetishizing pretty people? Lol it's gonna happen to YOU now!"

Losing that much weight in a week doesn't make sense so let's just pretend it was a month (humans can survive up to four weeks without food, I think)

I have mixed feelings on this.

About the stereotype that you have to look skinny and cute for most guys to take interest in you. XD
If only we could all starve ourselves for a week and look so petite.
And the "fat" voice thing... No. It would have been just as well to keep her normal skinny voice when she was chunky. -_-

And...maybe too much shallowness, and shipping, but that's what makes the show funny, right?

Other than that, Mitsui's the only guy that didn't care she looked prettier...even though I don't think he actually has romantic interest. XD

The rest are jerks.

Oh well, this show will be fun anyways. 3/5

ALL OTHER OF THOSE GUYS ARE SHIT. GET AWAY FROM HER! FORM YOUR BL PAIRINGS BUT PLEASE LEAVE SENPAI WITH SERINUMA!!!!

Some people seem to this 5-kun is decent too, but no. He was a nice classmate who cared she got hurt (normal behaviour, nothing note-worthy there) but he turned into an ass the moment he IMMEDIATELY asked her out and even tried to get alone with her despite the group date. Man is SHALLOW.

Senpai is best boy. Best best boy.

That was a pleasant little surprise. Nothing too special, but quite amusing at times. I can see why people were annoyed by the suddenness of her "transformation," but I thought it made the whole premise funnier. I'm glad they got the whole bit about her hiding her otaku self from the boys out of the way from the get go, too.

The danger of a show built on a "gimmick" like this one is that the gags could quickly grow repetitive and stale, so here's hoping that doesn't happen. To be honest, I have a feeling it will, but this episode was enjoyable at least.
