THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.

it was impossible to find a good sub of this, and i didn't really care for the manga paneling style of the episode, but i still liked it overall once i found a tolerable (but still bad) translation of it.

I kind of like how this episode, and really the series in general, has focused on the thoughts that have went through Yukino and Arima's heads. I think the fears and doubts the two have are definitely relatable. I wasn't such a big fan of the panel thing, but I do realize it was used to focus on the thoughts and emotions of the two protagonists.

Yay a kiss on the 6th episode.
Where will they go from here?
It would be so awesome to have a well done and mature sex scene.
That won't happen though, it's very rare outside of Hentai.
The only anime that come to mind that do are Nana, Mirai Nikki, and Yosuga no Sora.

Anyways, this has to be the least animation I've seen in an episode in quite a long time. Most of the time the characters were drawn in SD. Yukino is cute when she is drawn appropriately and in full detail. Needs more of that and less outline and chibi drawings.

Quite lovely episode especially the near ending, the kiss sure was sweet :3 The bucket with water and directly laughing scene was really funny as well!

Lets see what happens next!

Got some horrible timing on my subs...

It surely was interesting to see some experimental form but I do hope they won't keep doing this in the long run... Also Arima already picking up stuff from Yukino, as in the last scene, was really funny:).

Did they run out of budget already?
The subs cutting in and out is also annoying but that isn't the anime's fault I hope.

I could definitely tell that this was a budget episode, but I still liked it. The minimalism has its own charm.

This time we got direct comparisons in thought process, which was pretty cool.

Cute kiss scene.

I wonder who the guy that voiced dubbed Arima is. I feel like I heard his voice before but I don't know... maybe he needs more acting jobs because his deep, serious voice fits perfectly for his character! He needs to play more characters like that!

Nope, your ears were right, its Borodin, kinda of a more upbeat version of Prince Igor Polovtsian Dances, but it's there. I doubted it too at first, but once listened more carefully to the "chorus" of the track it became clear... definitely Borodin.

It's the 24° track from the 2nd CD of the KareKano soundtrack, the track's name is "seitenhakujitu". The 4th CD from the soundtrack even has the Borodin's Polovtsian Dances, along with a few others such as Bach.

Both support each other in their own way. Miyazawa lets her happy personality enjoy her self while Arima lets his "Perfect guy" facade to fall off. And while by the end of this episode Arima hasn't really changed, at-least he realized that Miyazawa do change him even if the change moves slowly.

Anyway, there's nothing I hate about this series so far. I hope that fact wont change in the future.

This episode must have been SUPER cheap, but it still is one of my favourites so far, it just manages to make funny moments and go deep in the relationship so perfectly.

Anyone have detail on that "chastity" tune that bulldozed it's way thru Yukino's head while Arima was soaking his head? My fingers aren't so quick on the PAUSE button to catch the title slide. Was that just a joke or was that really unleashed on the kids of Japan? I think my WorldView eyes just got opened a little wider. 😄

Dammit, the visual framing in KareKano is amazing. With the way the episode is set up, the same circumstances and settings are viewed completely differently by Arima and Miyazawa. They mirror each other so well, finding things in each other that they're missing internally, coming to reason each other's and their own thoughts differently, yet coming to the same conclusions at the end.

But, with just the single scene for the dinners, while Miyazawa's household is shown eating dinner in full screen and upclose with wild conversations and visuals, Arima's dinner is narrow, constrained, short in length, and shown from a distance. It's also interesting that while we can't see any faces in the Miyazawa household's dinner, the vibrance of movement and actions help to show which character is currently talking and their emotions throughout. In comparison, we're shown the faces of the Arima household from a distance, which is necessary since it would be difficult and cumbersome to differentiate the three using the same framing as the Miyazawa household. Plus, while the Miyazawa household eats in a line as if they were a single unit, Arima eats across from his parents, showing another indication of distance between himself and everyone else. In fact, this very concept of "distance" runs contrary to the narrow shot of his dinner scene, depicting his mindset of constraining himself while simultaneously distancing himself from other people. He's straining himself by trying so hard to become perfect through near self-destructive means. His thoughts and actions are powered by some sense of guilt and need to attain approval through the eyes of others, which can be compared to Miyazawa, who is driven by pride and ego.

Arima is extremely self-conscious, wondering if someone like him, who isn't able to express himself properly, deserves to be with Miyazawa, who acts free of shame and care, and is thusly able to change herself more easily since her personal demon is her ego. Though, the same could be said about Miyazawa, who admires Arima for being like a strong, well-built wall to lean on. She's actually ashamed of her upbringing and is self-conscious of how she appears in public, to the point where she observes that Arima is, in fact, attractive on all points, making her feel even more self-conscious as a result. Though, she's just as awkward and weird, just as Arima is just as afraid of expressing his thoughts or taking any actions. Both are aware of their own situations, but while they're nearly on the same wavelengths on their anxieties, they differ enough so that they can't quite understand each other's thoughts, causing them to think themselves into their own mental corners.

This is becoming less of a romance comedy and more of a character analysis, holy crap.

Hnadholding?? Kissing?? LEWD! These too are moving too fast, everyone knows it takes 12 episodes to get to handholding, and this shameless Yukino hussy is kissing at episode 6!

The computer animation is really starting to take over in 1998. Unfortunately it's not seamless, but at least it's not too distracting either.

Awwwww their first kiss :3 I held my breath during the hug, but then the lightning strike interrupted the moment...only for another one to appear again! I love how various situations are portrayed differently through Arima's and Miyazawa's eyes, and the whole manga-like style of presentation with speech bubbles was cool and emphasized the whole character analysis of this episode (I wonder if the panels were directly taken from the manga or redrawn for the anime). It made all the internal monologue more significant somehow. By the way, Kazuya Tsurumaki was one of the people who storyboarded this episode, and I really see how the whole idea of using manga panels in anime translated into his future work on FLCL. Kare Kano's production clearly had a big impact on him, not only on Hideaki Anno.

But seriously, there's so much progress in the relationship of Arima and Miyazawa in just the first 6 episodes that they put every romance anime out there to shame. On top of that, there's creative direction, expressive voice acting (I just ADORE Miyazawa), and an incredible ED with live-action footage (probably another influence on Tsurumaki in his later work on FLCL) that nobody except Gainax would make. If this is not a masterpiece, than I don't know what is.

P.S. I also love the contrast between family dinners, the glorious PA PAYA PA at Miyazawa household is so different from gloomy Arima's home. But I have to stop writing love letters to Kare Kano somewhere and proceed to the next episode :P

My nature and past experiences keep me from judging it at this point, but I have a feeling we have come across a true masterpiece in romance comedy. The only thing that comes close is Kaguya-sama: Love is War.

Here we are again with the manga panels. The first time they did this, it was lampshaded: Kano (who is a manga otaku) was imparting life lessons to her older sister by quoting manga.
I wonder if these are original art, or redrawn manga frames, or actual manga frames.
You know how you expect a VN to have branches, and then you get one that has no branches at all and you just click advance (or maybe, speed advance)? That's how I feel when my anime turns into a slide show. It's like I signed up for an anime and got a partially animated VN.
It might not be Anno though, perhaps one of the assistant directors, particularly Turumaki or Otsuka, who did the same sort of thing on FLCL.
Today we had an amusing first half where Yukino and Arima each separately analyze their relationship, consecutively, to exactly the same music. This is another instance of Gainax taking an unconventional and possibly cheap narrative tack; but this time it works.
We learn that:
* Arima is perfect, in every way that Bill Clinton is not.
* Yukino is weird.
This is followed up by a lot of introspection by Arima about his role as a boyfriend,
I don't know where all the animators are...the only Gainax property remotely close is Ebichu...maybe they are all keeping the lights on with contract work?
Edo and Sumida rivers tells me they are in or near Tokyo (as is Gaianx). That, and those Tokyo cicadas.

Do Japanese highschools keep buckets in the hallway in case of fires and naughty students? In any other anime, the tsudere would deck the boy for doing that.
No Pre-ED ED in this episode, instead a Western song that's going to haunt me.
Todays ED: We're on a Boat!
Two episode titles today.

I have come back to karekano and its been creating more impacts on me than before. Probably I have gained some maturity to understand its characters, especially Arima. I've always liked Yukino for her energetic nature, but also I had a hard time understanding Arima. This ep helped a lot, with title "opposites attract" couldn’t be more accurate. I love how it tried to showcase the difference between Yukino and Arima, the subtle way both of them are changing each other while also retaining their individual attitudes. You love to see when yukino and arima both had same response "wind or rain, it doesn’t matter, we will make it work", despite arima being more concerned on hideaki's studying and yukino on his flirty attitude

I love this show so much

I thought it was ok. Other than the new opening, most of the info covered was reinforcing what I already know

I really like how the show uses Miyazawa as the first person narrator and uses her internal monologues to tell every observation she makes about the situation, while only doing the same for other characters at the bare minimum. It adds some extra realism since in a social situation, you basically have no idea what the other person is thinking and react based only on what you hear and see (Miyazawa even says she wants to know what Arima's thinking about really badly). I don't get one thing though, why are they still using their last names if their a couple?

I really wanted to try and give this anime a fair shake the second time around, but I dunno. I'm just not getting anything from this. The premise of utilising a superficial high school relationship as the basis for the development of Miyazawa and Arima is quite a novel concept, but the story keeps hitting the same roadblocks over and over again to the point where it diminshes it's value for me. It's definitely the most realistic approach to take with regards to believable characterisation, but it's also the most monotonous.

Really hyped to see where they go from here.

Since Miyazawa and Arima are on the same page now, I wonder how prying deeper into each other's lives will turn out.

The fact that they're both representative of the other's ideals is probably the best part of this show. Miyazawa wants to be boring like Arima, and Arima wants to be weird like Miyazawa, but their families and general natures get in the way of that.
