"The White Mobile Suit"

This is supposed to be episode 4 but Bandai made TV Asahi air it first because it's the first episode with the Victory Gundam.

Really? Wow, that's kinda annoying. And it explains why it just sort of throws you in with no exposition whatsoever. These Mobile Suits don't seem very advanced considering how much further in the future this show is than the other Gundams in this timeline.

So it's better to start from episode 2, then 3, 4, 1, then 5.

That's sort of ridiculous. This is more confusing than trying to figure out in which order you're supposed to read the Narnia books. =_= 2, 3, 4, 1, 5,...

Well that explains a lot.
So that's why we barely get any introductions for the characters...

ahh, wish i knew that beforehand, so unlike chars counterattack im not gonna hold it against the story for picking up directly in the middle with no set up

Actually, I found it worked quite well even without the usual set-up. Not a major detriment at all.

I have to love the usage of core fighters and the fact that they're so replaceable. This is shaping up to be a fantastic Tomino Gundam, but of course, he's often had problems with consistency.

I was able grasp the situation in the 20 first mn of Char's movie, not here... but now that I'm reading this forum, I understand why.

One of the first scenes took me immediately back to ZZ early stupidity: jumping off an escape pod?! The importance of the Core Fighter and the Gundam in kit didn't help either. At least, the Victory doesn't look like the titan ZZ, keeping a relatively small size. (probably a consequences of the changes already seen in F91, along the new technology that are the beam shields)

The blond (maybe russian) woman is already pretty antipathetic, I was almost expecting someone to slap her after what she said about the deceased population. Is she the "princess" of this Gundam?
At least, it allows the series to open on an incredible amount of corpses (but we know nothing about it)

I already miss Yasuhiko's style... but the characters were actually correct. Of course, the 90s arrival is noticeable but that's not bad here.

What happens when you have "masked guy" in the creative bible obligations but have either no idea to justify it or no desire to have one:

Because of pollution, I must wear a mask on Earth.

By the way, thanks to that guy, I know it surprisingly starts on the planet rather than in a colony.

2/5 Looks like the environmental aspect of Zeonism will have a bigger part in this series.

An indian girl, a greyish animal and a young children... Is this from GAINAX?

edit: I just checked the hero's age. Wow.

@Sapewloth :
About the confusion:the episode you just saw was made to be the fourth in the series. It was simply put forward because the producer (read "the toymakers") judged unacceptable to delay the titular MS first appearance for 3 weeks.
About the Victory's nature:the kit type can't be excused the same way than in ZZ since it was a monstrously sized mecha but we are now back to decently sized ones (since F91) who are not even large enough to host Zeta's escape "spheres".On the other hand, the Victory is not a prototype, it is a model thought to be easy to produce in series, repair, etc for the Ligue Militaire (a rebellion movement),thus a 3 pieces robot.Too bad Uso's stupid money-burning "tactic" becomes the norm after a while, leading the audience to wonder where the Ligue gets all the necessary money for parts production.
About Uso's age:Newtype!More seriously, there are a few justifications (more or less, depending on what you expect). You might also find reasons behind it (among other choices) in the Anno X Tomino interview I linked in the finale's discussion thread, but it contains a good amount of revelations about events you have yet to face. You might also find reasons behind it (among other choices) in the Anno X Tomino interview I linked in the finale's discussion thread, but it contains a good amount of revelations about events you have yet to face. BONUS: no idea how strongly intended it was but it reminded me of Fushigi no umi no Nadia (GAINAX, Anno, 1991), a very popular anime back then.
About Chronicle's face: even the character laughed at this excuse and just did what he wanted no matter what the conditions were. It was also an attempt at bringing a theme Tomino wanted: the ecological question. The idea waas suggested by several elements repeated during the series but it was continuously badly integrated and didn't make much sense at the end.

@St0rmblade It kind of made sense to me: the Federation (and probably the average population) having lost any sort of "energy" and being clearly in the road to defeat when the anime starts, what's left are the youngs and... the old people? (maybe more combative because "closer" to the old times too)

@MrLegitimacy Never forget what he said.

I didn't understand a single thing that was happening on screen this episode. The Gundam-in-kit drama had me laughing all the way through, though: given how many decades have passed, you'd think engineers would've figured out by now how plain retarded docking suits are.
Also, I'm sorry but how much younger are these protagonists supposed to get, exactly? I was already iffy about Judau being only 14 years old but fucking 11? You've gotta be shitting me. There better be a damn good reason to throw this child in the middle of the war otherwise I'm gonna be pissed.

Yeah, that was pretty funny too: I don't think any of the scriptwriters expected the audience to buy that silly excuse.

A novel way to start a series... I guess it is one of those aspects that make Victory infamous. Regardless, the show seems promising, at the very least, it will be better than F91 and ZZ. I hope.

I quite like the mechanical designs of the suits as well. A run-down, dystopian world is also something right up my alley.

Dude, right?!? I was thinking the same exact thing and I thought he was only 13, but 11?!? It made me feel uncomfortable watching Uso having to pilot the gundam, but it will be even more so now that the kid is fucking 11! I also have a feeling the explanation of why he is in the middle of this war will be senseless and lack any substance.

Maybe I should have not read reviews before viewing Victory, but I have a feeling this will be a sleazy Gundam series. I already don't like any of the characters and the animation is dreadful and hard to look at.

Without the knowledge of the episode order, I just figured it was purposeful, and I think it worked out fine. 5 minuted in and I think we know what kind of character Katejina is going to be.

Luckily I watched this one as intended (as the 4th episode). I don't get why the narrator is telling me the same thing at the beginning 4 episodes straight.

The Resistance is totally made up of grandpas and grandmas, huh. Why's that? Also, Katejina really seems to be indifferent to the deceased civilians (or at least arrogant)

I'm getting some tonal whiplash between the awesome OP/ED songs and the mountains of corpses in the episode xD I gotta say, I think it's a fun idea to bring back the docking mobile suit concept as a way to have interchangeable parts between units. It makes a lot more sense than having your one-of-a-kind prototype rely on docking its 3 parts with no replacements.

Also shout out Asher for giving me the best anime quote of 2020: "This is why I have to wear a mask when I'm on Earth."

I'm confused since the first episode is so abrupt but then I read that the decision to change up the episode order was obviously one made in order to sell toys, and it came at the expense of the writing, and me having any idea who these people were, and what was going on. I'm gonna say this will be like ZZ where its kind of lighthearted at the beginning but quickly becomes dark. 3/5

I got the gist of it, but I can't get invested if I don't know who the characters even are and why what they do is important. The sound and voice acting was a bit rough, especially Uso's voice.

The technology is different, they're not using those flying pads for mechs, but they have a rotor like in a helicopter. That part with Gundam parts getting destroyed before they can combine shows a major weakness. They have spare parts, but can they afford to lose one every time they go to battle? Doesn't seem very economical. They should combine before fighting.

I personally like that they decided to start the series with the 4th episode.

I am personalyl very fond of stories which start somewhere after the beginning/in the middle/at the end (Shin Mazinger Shougeki Z-Hen, you know), and then 2 episode is the real beginning. I love the original episode order of Haruhi Suzumiya too, btw. Even to JoJo i got introduced from the middle of Part 3 in the OVA, and then watched from the first episode of Part 1.

That aside, it's the first Gundam TV Series i plan to watch, i already watched first episodes of original Gundam and Gundam Reconguista in G, but because i'm watching many anime in release-date specific order, only now i got to the year 1993 so i can watch Victory Gundam, along with other 1993 Anime like GS Mikami, Might Giane and Irresponsible Captain Tylor.

The story already made me intrigued. They are so desperate, that they have kids along to help them in this... i feel sorry for the baby.

I like the art style. It's one of those 90's art styles i love. Lacking on shading, tho, but lineart is good.
