When I saw the first episode of this show, my reaction was 'WTF That was horrible'.
When I saw the second episode of this show, I thought 'Well, maybe I won't drop this'.
When I saw the third episode of this show, I decided that it's probably entertaining enough to be worth watching.

Slowly, it's growing on me. But I'm honestly glad that the grand majority of anime aren't like Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt.

I think the first half was the best yet, but the second half made me kinda bored besides the obligatory WTF when I realized the soldiers were actually sperm.

Like most of us here, I was baffled about how this episode made it past the censors. That's Japanese television for you. I guess the one good thing is that we'll never hear the dubs of this. Or will we...

To be fair, I considered the 2nd part of the 3rd episode clever. At least from an artistic standpoint, it was something fairly original and creative.

But at any rate this show is waaaaay too inconsistent, and Nyron's review is totally outdated.

3rd ep: Now I see why haters said "sex and potty humour will only get you so far". This ep ruined EVERYTHING the show had going for it. Both parts where boring, lame, predictable, and they screwed up maybe the only time this show could be funny, and that was when a guy was getting bullied and Stocking ran him over with SeeThrough and the victim said Lucky! If worked well in the first ep but in this ep it was oddly timed, way zoomed out, predictable, lame, boring, delayed reaction, gosh I could rant about the crappy sperm ep and yes I knew it was sperm from the beginning the not subtle humour and emphasis on shit and cum is so fucking stupid I'm starting to hate this anime. Okay that's going a little far but it was boring, lame, poorly executed, and disgusting old jokes. It's a one trick pony and it's a fucking piece of shit in my opinion.

Aw, poor baby. Why don't you go and watch a predictable romance, or a two-decade-old action animu, or something totally deep.

Before you accuse me of being obsessed primarily with Japanese cultures, I've seen my fair share of American productions actually pull off crude humor in ways that were actually funny. Whether it's television, movies, or anime, there is an art to pulling off things even like crude humor.

This show is struggling to be funny at all quite frankly. Everything hinges on its production values and coming up with some kind of concept that nobody else would be willing to animate or dare to write a script for. Since anything conventional that they do is subpar at best.

Gainax owes something to Woody Allen... at least a credit...

For those folks who haven't seen it, the last section in Allen's movie adaption of "Everything You Wanted to Know About Sex, But Were Afraid to Ask" was about - yes, sperm soldiers getting ready for the Big Jump. (IIRC, Woody, as one of the sperm soldiers, does worry about the possible presence of a condum or IUD...)

Never-the-less, this was a nice homage...

@ Onibokusu

And who are you to just brush off every opinion that differs slightly from yours? You're opinion is not fact, you can't just condemn everyone who has a different one. Grow up.

I'm actually bashing this episode for being predictable, run-of-the-mill, stale (old) and boring, which is a total contrast to the awesome creativity and genius of the first two clever episodes. And you're accusing the anime I watch as being boring. But oh well, you're a little kid who can't be bothered with other people's opinions.

Oh? But your opinion isn't fact either, is it? Your perspective on this anime differs from mine, thus I am in every right to discredit yours, aren't I? What makes my opinion any better than yours? It seems to me that you're no better than me, bashing my opinion.

But there isn't anything different here than in the first two episodes. The fact that you knew they were sperm soldiers doesn't make the episode any less edgy in terms of censorship. Let us not forget, they blatantly showed a clitoris, something extremely taboo on Japanese television. And I don't remember the second episode being all that creative, it is actually the least entertaining of the three episodes so far. And what made you Queen of Comedy? Why do you get to deem what is humorous suddenly?

Oh yeah, despite how you hide your list your history is still wide open. And ad hominem isn't going to get yourself anywhere in life.

This show is worth watching. It's just nowhere nearly as good as what Nyron's review implies, and if we are to judge the show based on how Nyron perceives it works (and he does accurately state what the show does best in the first episode), it's honestly doing a poor job of maintaining its status. And I haven't rated this show at all. Most of the time I reserve ratings for when the show actually finishes airing.

It has enough to be passable, but as of now has proven to be too inconsistent to truly be considered an exceptional show. First episode was perhaps 8ish material. If the show continues the pattern its kept up til about now, it should be about 5-6 material.

The production values (I define this usually as graphics and voice acting) are actually the consistent highlight of this show. What moments this show does creatively can be considered remarkably good to some extent, but the moments where this show isn't creative, it's mediocre at best, since the characters and plot have very little substance.

Epiosde 5 worked because the flow of the story was smooth and their interactions believable and fun. It's not a particularly original story, but the context and the execution made it work perfectly. The characters are over-the-top and one-dimensional to a degree, but the staff makes them work thanks to the wonderfully acted animation and the honesty of their crazy non-stop banter.

This is the whole point of the show and I'm personally amazed that some people were still thinking to find a "normal" show. I mean, I understood since the shit jokes in the first episode that this was going to be like this. It is purposely provocative, so the more it sinks and become tasteless and the more it will be a success.

And to be frank, this show is doing a poor job of consistently meeting that purpose. They have shown very inconsistent levels of creativity, and frankly, this show can't afford a lack of creativity when the plot/characters are deliberately shallow, and when unfortunately the comedy is not actually that funny most of the time.

If we compare this show to an American series like South Park, South Park afaik is easily superior. They get crude humor down correctly and manage to come up with a lot of fresh jokes or ways to make fun of forms of culture around us. As I am quite certain that is close to what P&S is trying to accomplish, it doesn't nail it nearly as consistently. P&S is basically split between generic plot "advancement" and pulling off creative crude stunts that nobody else would animate. The latter acts are the ones that actually are good and funny. The former is nothing more than a series of misadventures that lacks cohesion and depth and is plagued by forced jokes.

While I do agree that South Park is superior to P&S, you have to consider that P&S is a satiric show more than a simple comedy one: this means that while it tries to be funny, making people laugh it's not its primary purpose. The show is a critic to the whole media, anime itself being is main target, and how it has become nowadays.
This is why the art and the main protagonists are the opposite of what you would expect from a "normal" anime and I personally don't think that Panty and Stocking are more shallow than the average of the characters you can find in "normal" anime.
Plot wise, it is just episodic, like all the other cartoons of this genre (South Park being one of them).
I don't know if you ever read some comic sketch about political satire, but they are always extremely gross, with often sexual jokes and hardly funny at all.
More than lack of depth I would say that this anime is too pretentious. So exactly the opposite of what you said.

South Park above all is also a satirical show that isn't afraid to use crude humor to get its point across. South Park of course covers a more broad range of popular culture, but the point is they actually get the formula right and make it consistently funny and interesting.

And if we assume P&S is a critic towards anime in general, it's accomplishing that poorly. Only the first episode really got it across well in mainly the first half. The 2nd episode was forced plot advancement with mostly forced jokes and references that were more "random" as opposed to actually funny. 3rd episode was half plot "advancement", half taking bold steps in animating a plot about ejaculation.

This is why the art and the main protagonists are the opposite of what you would expect from a "normal" anime and I personally don't think that Panty and Stocking are more shallow than the average of the characters you can find in "normal" anime.
I don't understand what you mean by "normal" anime. There's plenty of shows that present characters better and develop them more appropriately than this show. I don't think I should have to name anything in specific, since your statement pretty much is only true if you're talking about shows from specific genres.

Plot wise, it is just episodic, like all the other cartoons of this genre (South Park being one of them).
Sayonara Zetsubo Sensei is an episodic comedy type of anime that is not centered around plot or character depth. However it's a much superior comedy and critic of culture than P&S, being able to always present jokes that are simultaneously surprising yet appropriate for the situation. A lot of P&S's jokes are forced, crude for the sake of being crude without any actual basis behind it. The Engrish profanity is a good example of a very forced joke in P&S. It doesn't actually have a real place that's relevant to the situation (Seitokai Yakuindomo has a much better example of Engrish profanity in episode 3). It's just used for the sake of being crude.

I don't know if you ever read some comic sketch about political satire, but they are always extremely gross, with often sexual jokes and hardly funny at all.
More than lack of depth I would say that this anime is too pretentious. So exactly the opposite of what you said.
It's not a question about this anime being too indecent. It's a question about what it's trying to accomplish, and how well it's doing that. Obviously the show is not serious since the plot and characters are deliberately shallow, and the events are episodic. Naturally its best option is comedy with a theme of some sort. Since a lot of people agree that this show was supposed to be poking fun at popular mechanisms in anime, it should be stated that it only does so inconsistently and that as a comedy, it's not actually funny since most of the "humor" is forced crude jokes when the show runs out of clever ideas to make fun of.

Also naturally, the show can't actually develop their characters or plot in any real way partly because the first episode introduced everything as deliberately shallow. Obviously if they focus on developing the plot and characters, the show no longer has a unique premise or purpose. At that point it's just a series of misadventures that lacks good quality comedy or substance. Half of the show has been like that, and that's why Nyron's review is outdated. The show lacks a consistent purpose.

You are not getting the fact that, being P&S an anime, ridiculing itself means poking fun at anime in general and I see you are still focusing too much on the comedy aspect which is not essential and can be totally absent in satire.
For "normal" I meant the majority of anime that come out nowadays and there is no particular genre (it goes from mecha to moeblob shows). And before you think I'm some kind of elitist, I like moeblob shows and other things like that, but I'm not an idiot and I can see their limits.

Sayounara Zetsubou Sensei is a great anime and imo better than P&S (I never said P&S is the best satiric anime or cartoon out there, so you can stop bringing up other examples ;P).
It's already the second time I see the name Nyron in these episodes discussion, why people care so much about his opinion?

Obviously, a lot of people thought his review was amazing and helpful, when in fact it's only relevant for one episode.

EDIT: He did update it, but my point still stands, as a satire, this show is inconsistent at best and half the time a failure at originality. And it doesn't matter what purpose a show has. It has to have consistency.

Of course, I don't condone people criticizing the show without understanding this basic detail.
