Despite all the complaints I’ve had up to this point, I’m happy to say this was a fucking amazing final episode. The three on one final fight with Jiren was imo better than every scuffle with him before this, it was so hype watching Goku, Frieza and 17 team attack him and at long last end his reign over the tournament, this might be the most team tactics we’ve seen in this battle royale where team play was emphasized lol. And it all looked so good too, they had all hands on deck for this episode and I’m glad they did, the finale wasn’t undersold by any stretch, they nailed it. And in the end, with 17 being the last one standing (love to see it), yeah of course they’d wish all the universes back, that was pretty clear early on, I know it kinda makes the deletions of each universe not mean much but really this is the only wish that makes sense, and turns out the Zenos were planning to delete everything if the winning universe made a selfish wish anyways, so I guess those two share a brain cell after all lol, makes me wonder if the angels knew this too and that’s why some didn’t react strongly to their universes getting wiped.
And I’m glad we got one last look at each universe before the show ended, they were a range of very goofy to cool af, but I’m happy to see them all brought back, including Jiren who had a character arc over the course of the final battle, I have no idea what happens in the manga besides a handful of things, but I hope he makes an appearance again in the future, his last moments in the tournament actually made me kinda like him lol. And lastly was that tease of Frieza’s army being back, we already know that didn’t come into play in the movies yet, so I’m wondering how that went in the manga, but I can at least say this, I absolutely loved his moments in the tournament, nothing ever came of his plot to take on the gods but him becoming a true team player was a nice arc for his character.
And that was it for Dragon Ball Super, feels crazy to say that after always having this to watch for most of this year, but yeah we’re at the end now, wild huh lol. First I want to say what I thought about this final arc, the Tournament of Power, and I can easily say it’s the best of Super, not much contest, the Goku Black/Zamasu/Future Trunks arc comes close but not by much imo, this arc just had the best of everything, be it art and animation, music, fights, story, for me it just beats everything else the show had to offer. Now that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have its problems lol, I’ve voiced them over nearly every episode of the arc so I won’t go into too much detail, but I can say one of the biggest issues was how meaningless the stamina was, one of the points of this 48 minute battle royale was that you couldn’t simply go all out early on, you had to conserve energy for the bigger fights. Well you know what that meant? Absolutely nothing because Goku and Vegeta never got tired no matter how many times they pulled out their strongest forms lol, doesn’t help that Universe 7 were always the ones to pull the trigger on each universe losing, it just made a lot of the things that happened really unbelievable, especially near the end of the tournament. There’s also the timer, which of course also meant nothing, they stopped mentioning it even during the last few episodes, probably because they knew how dumb it was starting to seem lol, I mean there’s just no way with how much they talked and drew out fights that there were truly minutes left for the final battle with Jiren. But I could go on and on about that, so I’ll just leave the complaints there, overall I thought the arc was super fun, entertaining without a doubt.
And I know I’ve talked a lot already, but I still gotta talk about Super itself lol. All in all I really enjoyed Super, it had tons of problems sure, some truly awful looking scenes that were rushed to hell and back, but it was a really fun journey, I loved taking another ride with Goku and the gang. Now comparing it to GT, do I like it more? People are gonna hate me for this, but… no, I think I’ll probably die on the hill that GT is the better continuation of Dragon Ball Z, and a better production as a whole. Of course GT has its problems too, but I feel the coolness of GT outweighs the bad, while in Super the bad kinda outweighs the good sometimes, you also gotta consider GT is more of an end to the series while Super is left open ended and has since had movies as continuations, as well as the manga, so it’s hard to compare them on that front, but really I just love having both GT and Super, I may be a ride or die for GT but I’m glad both exists, not really a point at the end of the day to say one is better. And if I had to rank the arcs of Super, it probably goes Tournament of Power, Goku Black/Zamasu, Universe 6 Tournament, Battle of Gods and Resurrection F, surprisingly it wasn’t hard to rank them versus GT where I had a harder time. And as for the OPs and EDs, OP2 beats OP1 imo, it’s just so much more hype but both are great, and since there’s so many EDs I’ll just say my favorites, which were ED2, ED3, ED7, ED9 and ED10.
I greatly apologize for such a monster of a post, I know this kind of thing doesn’t really belong in episode discussions but for me these aren’t good enough for the reviews category so I always put them here, until the day someone tells me to stop I will keep writing these (I may not even stop then lol). And after this, not sure if it will be immediately or not, but I plan to go back to the beginning and hit the OG Dragon Ball and then Z after that since I have not seen them in full before, probably a project for next year or maybe the end of this year, we’ll see what I do there. |
