So I just saw the first episode, and it felt off for some reason. I’ve read 6 chapters of the manga, so I’ve alr read what the first episode adapted, except for that part with the kid who came late (I skipped that scene to avoid spoilers). I don’t like how they merged the first 2-3 chapters into one story, because it just completely ruins how Shuichi was absolutely terrified of spirals after what happened to his parents. I can’t say I didn’t enjoy the episode, the animation and art was wonderful and the movements looked very human like which added to its uncanny-ness. But it just didn’t hit like the manga did. The manga didn’t scare me, but it did have me hooked. While watching the anime however, it just felt like I was staring at the screen for no reason: I wasn’t bored, but I wasn’t rly entertained either. Again, I’m not saying it’s a bad anime. What do you think about the anime?

I can understsnd why it might feel off to some, but I think it was a great choice jumping in and out of the stories. While ito tells the stories one by one in the manga, i believe they are actually happening largely simultaneously. I think it gives the viewer a better idea of how overwhelming these spiral infested events are for the characters. As for shuichi, i dont think combining the stories ruins the development of his fear for spirals. If anything i think it makes it more apparent with not being able to escape from spirals terrorizing him.

It’s very fast, having re read the manga directly before watching the first episode was very jarring as the manga took considerable time building mystery while the anime is a lot noisier. I’m not going to make a full judgement yet until I have seen the four episodes and then rewatch it once or twice after a while though.

No, this isn't my signature.

It's definitely fast paced. They even removed a few pages of manga that should be included for better understanding of the story

Yes that I noticed, I would like it if they had included them

To property adapt the story it should be at least 8 episodes long (like 2 hours in total)

I thought it was perfect. Far better than just adapting the chapters in order, they managed to mingle them in a way that feels totally natural. I'm liking the anime more than the manga at this point already. The soundtrack is what does it for me, it's so freaky and weird, just like classic horror movies.

One of Itou's biggest strength's as an author is his pacing. I'd rather have them skip chapters than mess up the pacing like this.

I think this choice of the director is going to be a hit or miss. For me, it is a bull's eye. I don't think it would have worked in the anime if they showed each story one after another like manga. As someone already mentioned, I also believe that these events were actually happening simultaneously in the story. They have joined them so perfectly that a non manga reader definitely wouldn't realize that it is going on a faster pace than manga. I think this is the perfect pace.
I already really liked this director after seeing his work in Aku No Hana. He definitely didn't disappoint. And there are no words of appreciation enough for Colin Stetson. He is THE PERFECT GUY to do the soundtrack for this. This is defo going in my top 10 after airing.

Im fine with them mixing chapters but i feel they cut out too much from the chapters adapted. You might just think its cutting out what isnt neccessary but this is a horror anime. The whole point of each interation is to build tension and suspense. Cutting out when the dad throws a fit because his wife threw out all his spirals or when she goes over to his house because shes obsessed with him to instead rush to the end of the chapter ruins the overall tension. It might be well animated but the only time that i felt anything is when thr mother cut off her fingerprints and when snail boy had his spiral shown on his back. Other then that it was cool, but not scary. I feel nearly no one in the anime industry knows how to do horror because they always miss the point of what makes something scary.

Yeah, I don't think 4 episodes is long enough for this story which is a bit shame. I don't mind mixing the chapters but I do feel like the stories were kinda speedrun and because of that they don't have as big of an impact. Right now it seems like an introduction to the manga giving us highlights of the stories instead of being a good adaptation of it. But it is still the best Junji Ito adaptation so far. I just wish it had more time for the stories.
"Oh, I wasn't trying to be funny.. I would've put a 'Haha' at the end of it."
