story and premise is ok, but I absolutely hated the mcs lol. I am sooooo over the deadpan-face, emotionless, I-stand-alone type characters... especially when they're supposed to be teenagers. 5/10

What the hell just happened? No way is Osanai serious about dating Mr. Random Dude. That guy has no idea what he’s getting into.

Oh there’s a S2 coming? Well then I guess everything will work itself out. Never mind.

Ironically, Shoushimin is from the same director as The Promised Neverland. Never watched it, but I'm interested now to see it.
@patkarunungan Just read the manga because the anime takes a shit in the 2nd season and doesnt follow the story correctly

Yeah I also wasn't a big fan of this series, the ending, and especially Osanai who tried to gaslight Kobato after he called her a liar, and then she had the gall to break off the relationship, probably so that he had no chance to do it first if he went that route. Regarding Osanai and the potential new boyfriend, I think they will end up using each other since he's the guy that wanted to write an article about her kidnapping but he doesn't know who he's getting involved with.

Regarding Kobato, not sure what that gyaru-type girl sees in him (maybe she knows he's smart and needs help with her grades) but I'd be surprised if that relationship goes anywhere in S2 especially because I don't think he was looking for a girlfriend, at least not at that moment. Lastly, I'm not sure why the van that was used in the kidnapping (I'm assuming it's the same vehicle) was burned up since I figured the police/detectives have already gone through it.

While the production values and animation were good I felt that some of the episodes, especially the ones that didn't seem to connect with other episodes like case of the hot cocoa and the spicy dessert, were somewhat dull and pointless.

@Rajidae it doesn’t feel natural because out of nowhere they terminate their friendship and then all of a sudden they are both approached by potential new love interests. Not only is it not natural but it’s a giant middle finger to the audience as they are getting invested in Kobato and Osanai’s relationship and don’t want to see them get cucked by randos we meet in this episode
@ajw215799 Besides the cucked part, I agree with everything you said.

This was a last episode? She creates this whole scheme and uses all her close friends to put one of her bullies in jail and then she says she isn't the only one that lied because Kobato lied about enjoying interrogating her... What? One is a whole of a lot worse don't you think? Then they decide to break their friendships off because... They said they wanted to be normal and together they're... not normal! Wow. And then they each get bf/gs in the last 5 minutes, okay cool.
@CukieMunster That's exactly how I felt too. What a weird episode...

i feel joy with the art and the flow of this anime.....until the plot twist came and how Kobato deal with it, like doesn't agree at all. it's right the group got manipulated to kidnapping Osanai, but she's right. either Osanai or not, it's a nature for a CRIMINAL do something outrageus just to make sure person who saw them did criminal thing (sip a marijuana in the case/context) doesn't open the lip, like make them "join" by force, or bully them (i have WORST scenario but i'm sure u all gonna call me delusional). and yeah leaving a group of criminals would not harm you, but the others will. so:

> is it mean i'm on Osanai side, even she's like a hoe?
she is Moriarty's dream girl, why not?

> is this make me don't wanna come again in S2?
i bet u never get bored with Case Closed (Detective Conan) or get dissapointment when Sir Conan decided to kill both Sherlock and Moriarty absurdly as the end of the case

> what a psycho! u must a person who eat cats and dogs!
BEAT ME!

i will rate this anime 7/10!

So Kobato had a Moral Dilemma He knew what Osanai did was wrong and Kobato just wanted Osanai to apologize and admit her mistake But, Osanai instead manipulated Kobato and acted as if she was a victim as a result Osanai gave her the choice to stay and leave her like this or break up, Kobato chose to break up because he realized he didn't want to be used by Osanai. Kobato realized Osanai had manipulated him as a result Kobato was sure of his choice. But even so Osanai made a plan, Osanai told one of her friends that she had broken up and told her to shoot Kobato as a result. Next Osanai needs a new tool as a temporary replacement for Kobato so she chooses someone from the Manga Club to temporarily become her partner and the plan succeeds. It is likely that in Season 2 we will see how Kobato stops Osanai's plan and the possibility that Kobato knows his friend has been manipulated by Osanai and Kobato will definitely help his friend. Finally in Season 2 we will see a duel of intelligence between Kobato and Osanai, Kobato with his detective skills and Osanai with her ability to manipulate and make plans, this will be an interesting spectacle and at the same time become a metaphor for Sherlock Holmes vs Moriarty.

I would give this a 8/10 for now with how much I love this series with so many unique visuals that make it not boring to follow and the OST is also amazing, do I'll give it that much for now but this might change after season 2 airs who knows.

I didn’t think I’d enjoy this series but I did and the whole time I was watching it I thought I’d hate to be a associated with her. She’s the type of person you’d steer clear of. Personally I don’t think she fully understands that whatever connection she has with Kobato she isn’t going to get with anyone else but most can’t stand her and her selfish orders/whims. So in the last episode it didn’t really suprise me it ended like that.

Just my opinion

A great finale, that concludes this season nicely and sets the next one up with intriguing possibilities.

After last week's reveal, I couldn't very well see how Kobato and Osanai's sorta relationship could go on, he just doesn't seem like the kind of guy who would accept all of that lying and manipulating. It was still bittersweet to see them part ways, but it was probably for the best. Their new love interests seem interesting; let's wait and see where it goes.

I really loved that scene with Kobato and the mannequins after Osanai said they're just arrogant high schoolers. It was like a deconstruction of all those school detective shows (that I love, TBH), and something you don't usually see in those.

I wonder why the van was on fire at the end? Can't wait to find out in season 2 !

The best thing about this series was that I discovered Hyouka. Otherwise nothing special about it. Pretentious is the perfect word for this anime.
Wild guess about car explosion - there is probably bigger crime scheme so Osanai's lie will be justified and forgiven.

Considering Kobato got asked out on a premise that he's 無難 "inoffensive", that relationship seems doomed within a month. Unless the girl secretly likes being cornered by a detective.

Really happy for Osanai who can talk to somebody more positive for a change, without all those endless soul crushing whimps, sighs and downcast eyes. But she might get bored. She kind of needs a partner in crime.

I think this series was very well executed : direction, animation, backgrounds, voice acting are very good.
The problem I have with this show is that I can't get involved in the characters. Slice of life series live or die on their characters being likable, whether it is Hyouka, Non Non Biyori or Too many losing heroins, they work as a show because the characters are endearing.
Can't say that here. I'm not emotionally attached to these characters and even if I understand that this is one of the basis of the show (summed up by Osanai in this episode), it is severely lacking in my opinion.
I'll watch the second season out of curiosity, but I must say that I'm disappointed in the writing of this one.

Osanai ended up giving off strong psychopath vibes, honestly the dude dodged a bullet by not dating someone like her, imo
Not that they were that romantically compatible to begin with. They could be fun friends tho
Also kinda feel like Osanai might've had something to do with a random girl showing up suddenly and proclaiming that she's dude's gf, tbh

- "You can't treat crime like snacks..." I find it interesting that Kobato believes it's wrong to bring a known criminal to justice because of a lie. Whereas Osanai seems to think that the ends justify the means.

- Sure, Kobato may have lied about wanting to become ordinary. But staging a kidnapping that would get the supposed kidnapper arrested is not on the same level.

- Out of context, the part about terminating their relationship does give off the vibes of a romantic breakup.

- Who the heck is this red head girl? Who does she think she is that she can call Kobato as "Joe"? Glorified extra merely crushing on Kobato? Or new main character?

- So Kengo's associate from the newspaper club is crushing on Osanai. I wonder what kind of trouble will he get into this time.

- Speaking of trouble... what's with that final scene of the white van catching on fire? Did Osanai leave a parting gift?

----------------

Overall series impression:

I'm rather mixed with this series.

On the one hand, it at least tries to make an effort in its visual presentation. One can say that it's "cinematic flair" is arguably more blatant when compared to Hyouka's presentation.

On the other, the mysteries are of a mixed bag. I guess I had been spoiled by The Apothecary Diaries approach to small mysteries: if it's a just a minor thing, Maomao will solve it in 5 minutes tops and move on. Whereas in Shoshimin, it indulges half an episode pondering how Kengo made hot coco. I'm just glad that the series got more interesting than what was presented in Episode 2 with the bike theft and kidnapping incidents.

There are only 3 characters worthwhile talking about. Kengo is the straight everyman. Kobato is the wannabe detective, who can also be a capable prosecutor as one of his future career prospects. But it was Osanai who I found the most intriguing. Initially, I feared she was just a subdued Eru Chitanda with a sweetooth. But her darker side really caught me off guard, and is to me a main highlight of the show. On that note, I wish that there was more for Kobato. His quest to be "ordinary" feels trivial when compared to Osanai's deeper issues. An nosy know-it-all vs. a Machiavellian wolf in sheep's clothing. Which between these two urgently needs to be ordinary again?

I felt that two background characters suddenly crushing on our two main leads was so tacked on. I say this is the case because of the sudden rise in prominence of two extras who we did not see having any interest with Kobato and Osanai before Episode 10. The show was too heavily focused on Kobato and Osanai that barely allowed anyone who wasn't Kengo any meaningful screentime for adequate character development.

Despite my qualms about Shoshimin, I will watch Season 2. If only to see what Osanai is scheming behind Kobato's back.

TL;DR - If you ask me, Shoshimin S1 doesn't reach the heights of Hyouka. If you hated Hyouka, I do not recommend Shoshimin. If you're a Hyouka fan, do I recommend this show? Honestly, it depends on what you enjoyed about Hyouka. If it was the mundane mysteries, Shoshimin is definitely worth checking out. But if it was the Classic Literature Club and the chemistry of the main characters, please adjust your expectations accordingly.

And so, Shoushimin Series comes to an end, and I must say, I loved it. It's a calm but interesting series. In terms of the story, it's quite laid-back some might label it as boring, but I believe that’s where its charm lies, in how serene it is, along with the small mysteries presented in each episode. Visually, it’s stunning. Even though the character designs aren’t groundbreaking, they are brought to life beautifully through the anime’s art style. Plus, the soundtrack is quite good, and the animation is well done. Both the OP and ED are excellent and suit the anime perfectly.

The final episode was all about farewells and new beginnings. I feel like Ozanai still doesn’t fully grasp the seriousness of her actions. It wasn’t an "intelligent plan"; it was a demonstration of psychopathic traits in her behavior. And while psychopaths often don’t realize their own behavior because it feels normal to them, here Kobato was trying to make her see the reality. It wasn’t just a lie; she put herself and others in danger, caused significant emotional harm to her mother, and added fuel to the fire.

Kobato proved that he has great analytical and abstract intelligence, yet he still doesn’t realize how easily manipulated he is. In fact, the "breakup" of his relationship with Ozanai demonstrates this. Was it necessary for them to stop talking? No, they just needed to be honest with each other. Later, when the new girl asks him to be her boyfriend, he just goes along with it, letting her believe he accepted, simply because he wasn’t clear from the start.

The good news is that a second season has already been confirmed!

Damn, that was unexpected, the main duo is splitting at the end, both of them finding new partners meaning they really went their separate ways, which overall would have been a rather closed end, but then the scene with the white van made me thing otherways, and there really will be a S2. I am really glad, it was easily my favourite for summer season: one of the prettiest shows this season, fascinating OP and ED, and the writing was top-notch and it's a "not like other animes" anime. Wouldn't say it was a perfect run, I found the spicy muffin episode a bit boring and didn't really like that in the bicycle theft arc Kobato just came up with the entire solution from barely any information, but all other episodes were great, especially this last arc had some very surprising development.

Poor Yuki is being dragged through the mud in this comment section. I mean basically, she did commit a crime by misleading the police, but "only" with the ransom thing.
Not like she got herself kidnapped herself for fun, it was said that she was going to get captured anyway, since the gang leader was suspecting her. The only thing she could do was manipulate the events so she comes out on top. The ransom call was a "necessary evil" part of her very elaborate plan, since she did need a way to notify Kobato and the police, so she would actually be saved.
Of course knowing that she's gonna be kidnapped there probably could have been a better way of handling the issue (although I am not sure what, she goes to the police with this they will send her home saying "you are watching way too much TV kid"), and I am sure it was a very important part of the plan to get the gang leader behind bars, because of their past history (which might be explored more in the next season?). I think she did not pretend when saying she was very afraid of her, since we saw in earlier episodes and Kobato said it too, that whenever Yuki was out, she always had some sort of disguise on, fearing she would be recognized.

They have been acquaintances since middle school, no way all this time was planning to use Kobato for this specific purpose, but yeah, she also didn't trust him enough to tell him about this all. Now that the cat is out of the box regarding the kidnapping case, and Kobato is rightfully pissed off, she knew things cannot go on like they used to and ends their acquaintanceship. We can see how she's pretty sad after this, and I don't think with the new guy she just found a new plaything, she is just lonely and appreciates someone to talk to, like she did with Kobato. The van exploding might mean, that this case isn't really over, and further complications will arise from Yuki's "perfect crime".

Anyway what I was trying to say is that she might have had a good reason for this (still of course breaking the law is not ok).
Or yeah maybe she's just evil. Both would be interesting to see next season.

Looking back on it, this series just felt a bit mediocre. I liked it at the start with the little slice of life mysteries and calming mood, but I felt it became a bit dull (and kinda silly with the kidnapping part) nearer the end.

The animation definitely helped since it created some beautiful visual storytelling, but all in all it was just a meh anime for me. Not sure if I’ll stick around for S2 or not, but we’ll see.

I personally enjoyed this series, although felt that it dragged a bit at times. Really enjoyed the ending reveal that Osanai was really the mastermind behind everything from the beginning. Sets up nicely for season 2, where you know that there will be more "master plans" laid out by Osanai, but this time Kobato will already know she has her own agenda and is plotting, so it make for more of a "challenge" for her to enact the plans and involve others.

Given her personality, I think that she deliberately went to the journalism club when the new boy was there to get an interaction with him to set it up for her next plan. I also think that Kobato will be struggling with dealing with the new girl as she will come across as truly "ordinary" (or maybe she will surprise us) compared to his experiences with Osanai. Looking forward to a new season and the interactions with all the characters now knowing what they do.

I was surprised that Kobato and Osanai ended their friendship, but now thinking on it, it actually makes sense. It makes sense from Kobato's side because Osanai lied and manipulated him, and then tried to gaslight him by playing the victim when exposed. And from Osanai's perspective, she tries to establish moral high ground but fails, and probably understood there is no way he would keep friendly relations, or, there is no way he'd let himself get manipulated again which is why she decided to "dump" him first
