The historical drama manga was serialized in Weekly Margaret from 1972–1973 and compiled into ten volumes from 1972 to 1974. Shueisha later reprinted it in 10 bunkoban volumes from 1977 to 1978. Ikeda serialized a four-volume side story between April 2013 and February 2018. Versailles no Bara sold a cumulative 20 million copies of its volumes.

Tokyo Movie Shinsha produced a 40-episode television anime that aired from Fall 1979 to Summer 1980. The Seimei Aru Kagiri Aishite (I'll Love You As Long As I Live) compilation movie premiered in May 1990.

Udon Entertainment licensed the manga in English in July 2015 and published it in five omnibus volumes from February 2020 and April 2021. Right Stuf licensed the television anime under its Nozomi Entertainment label in September 2012 and released it on two DVD volumes in May and July the following year. Discotek Media reacquired the anime and released it in two Blu-ray volumes in April and June of last year.

Let's see how many more people are overworked to death for a remake that won't match Dezaki's original show.

This looks so visually underwhelming and I'm really not feeling the VA casting. At least it might introduce the manga and original adaptation to a younger audience.

Looks very sterile and bland, with it being a movie I don't see a point in checking it out. Gonna skip.

It already looks amazing on the trailer. It's great to see this iconic series receiving love again after all those decades. MAPPA is the studio working on it, so for sure this movie will be polished as much as it is possible.

I barely remember the original anime, Rose of Versailles always looked like a Hollywood story about the old regime in the spirit of Black Tulip?

@Adnash I'm more worried not about the quality itself, but that the release of a new version again triggers people who care more about their headcanons than about the original story. For example, denying the original love interests or claiming that Oscar is a man. It even got into Wikipedia.

It just keeps on getting worse, another shitty adaptation of old crap that should stay dead in that era.

Make something new or creative, or adapt stories not seen yet, you utter muppets.

@ZXEAN Or they could adapt any other retro shoujo manga that was never adapted instead. Dezaki did a great job, this doesnt need a remake.

@MichaelJackson We've already gotten retro shonen or even seinen manga adaptations over the years, so if all of this is popular, then maybe we'll get this too. Everything needs its time.

@Oppai_Loli_God God forbid girls will have their anime. some stuck-up shounen boys throwing tantrums. world doesn't revolve around you.

I'm So Excited, PV looks great. I hope Mappa will do more shoujo anime in future.

The original anime adaptation by Dezaki set quite a high bar, but I think it should be ok, hopefully.

@Antarclist, no, it is impossible. Better watch the previous anime adaptation.

@Memore Most people won't go watch decades old anime, regardless of how much some consider it a classic.

I watched it years ago, it was fine, a bit overmelodramatic, but honestly, it was never something that set the world on fire.

In other words, stop overrating things, especially old ones.

@Osamunau, where did I overrate it? I simply wrote that one movie can't adapt the whole manga, that is all.

@Memore When you used word "better"; but maybe overrating wasn't a right word.

Anyway, thinking about it now, a movie, or two ARE kinda enough to adapt the most important parts of the story.

I do wish it was a series myself, but let us be honest, at least it's something.
