A very tense episode as we see character rivalries unfold and built into this episode. These exams definitely feels more than just about proving their skills.

I'm kinda impressed on how Ubel handled herself being so calm even after being trapped. Rather than all out fighting, we got a lot of talking this episode, which I think is interesting to see how characters react to their rivals. Worth keeping an eye on everyone involved in this test, especially Frieren's party.

Ma girl Fern is really proving herself, especially since Frieren has taught her a lot.

Ubel faces off against Wirbel, using her cleaving magic in the duel. Despite both of them figuring out the weaknesses in each other's magic, Ubel manages to land a slash on Wirbel's face. However, Wirbel turns the tide by using Sorganeel, the binding spell, to immobilize Ubel. He opens up about his magic, which gives him time to gather the resolve to kill. Although he has never hesitated to make a necessary kill, Wirbel raises his staff to Ubel's head. The situation takes an unexpected twist as Fern steps in, sneaking up behind Wirbel and holding him at staff point. With the three of them in a standoff, Fern suggests the idea of making a deal to break the impasse.

You have to appreciate Wirbel's approach. He acknowledges his struggle with the idea of harming women and children, so he adopts a strategy that helps him build up the courage to face such situations. I'm relieved to see in this episode that not everyone is as eager to resort to violence as the last one implied. I was worried they might all be willing to fight to the death over an exam that only happens every few years. Wirbel's team brings a bit of humor into the mix. Both Ehre and Scharf end up getting defeated and practically beg Wirbel to carry them since he's the last one standing. They express regret over all the effort they put into battling Fern's team.

Though, while Fern was in the heat of the fight, Frieren was holding back, patiently waiting to bait the other mages into revealing their magic. Typical Frieren.

I saw several JPEGS or still images in the scene especially when Frieren's group is talking with Denken's. No animation or body movement just the mouth opening and closing.

Lot's of action this time and Fern was showing what she is made of now it's Frieren's turn tho and i wonder what she will show us.
It's funny how only one person seemed to realise who she was but from the looks of it he is underestimating her a lot.
But we have to wait till the next episode to see if that's actually true.

  • contradiction:
    • "They were perverts to love killing. I should kill you here."
    • "I've lost the qualification. I don't do unnecessary killing."
  • "If she did it with just common offence magic, she must be quite a monster."
Actually, you can't go easy on an opponent when abilities are close.

  • Fern is savage spamming ZolrAK-47.
  • Need more Ubel screentime.
  • Ehre and Wirbel potential romance is better than Twilight.
  • Wirbel is a good bro despite all of his experiences on the battlefield.
  • Land is an amogus.
  • We finally got an introduction to Serie.
  • Can't wait for the Denken and Frieren show off.
  • Overall, another amazing episode. This show never disappoints.

Is it just me or this episode doesn't feel as intricately made as the rest of the series? Character just spouted out dialogue for no reasons or any natural transitions like Wirbel suddenly, in the middle of the fight, just talked about his backstory to his enemy out loud. Or characters do illogical stuff like Wirbel just blindly trusted Fern for absolutely no reasons whatsoever, when he is a supposed battle-harden mage. The dialogue writing is horribly mediorce as it is filled with characters stating the obvious, talking about their backstories, or just spewing exposition when it could be shown instead.

I absolutely love this series but this episode to me felt like a massive fluke and most of the recent episodes felt like I am watching an average fantasy anime. Hopefully, the show can recover and deliver us a satisfying finale.

Funny how we got a more calm OP for the second cour, but there is far more action now.
3:18 Sorganeil doesn't seem to be a real word?

Wirbel hesitating to kill makes him a bit more human, I like it.
8:28 daaaamn, the eye twitch. Ehre must be important to him. And yes, as I thought, Fern didn't actually kill her, phew.
Lmao Wirbel's party is amazing. I like him so much more now.
I feel like I've seen the girl from the flashback somewhere... Or maybe it's Ehre? That'd be cliche, but I like it lol. Also damn, he is much older than I thought. This is kinda nice to see.
THEY PASSED HELL YEAH
16:24 Sense is scythe or sickle. She looks like the girl from the flashback too, huh

16:30 Genau is exactly

17:52 Idk what Jilwer means, it doesn't appear to be German

20:32 Serie is "series". I've heard this name! And she was in the first OP! I expected her to have purple hair.

22:15 Idk what Bargland is either. Also from some Googling I realized that all the spells in Japanese use 義訓 (gikun) - reading of a kanji by meaning. So "Bargland" is written as 大地を操る魔法 - "ground controlling magic".

I feel like we're about to get some beautiful animation next episode. Excited for it.

This is the anime I've been looking for long time (after the Naruto and Gintama series), an anime that presents simple action scenes but is full of tricks and strategies. not just attack randomly by shouting or relying on the power of Nakama. I've watched too much Sakuga with fast action scenes and it could make me epilepsy any time. especially considering my old age.

As Wirbel mentioned ubel was buying time and he said he will help her doing that and ubel also asked him a question that has he ever killed a women and children and the answer was in his backstory.

Expected Wirbel to just be a male Ubel when it came to murdering people with magic and Denken to have this cold "it happens" response to deaths based on their reputations. The fact that they both actually had surprisingly humane stances on killing made me want them to advance to the second exam just so we get to see more of them.

Also, the absolute half pipe from Fern's Zoltraak rampage tho

Solid episode leading onto what seems to be an intense battle for Frieren and her party next episode. Fern displaying how cracked she is, almost making another party give up entirely on the first exam until they luckily found a stille in the final few hours of the exam. Overall, good character development on all the characters in this stage of the entire first class mage exam, looking forward to next week.

Talk about rotten luck for Frieren's party there. While it's one thing for their Stille to get stolen by Laufen, which is part of the exam, Denken is hellbent on making sure she fails by keeping her occupied so that she can't catch another Stille. At least Wirbel knew when to back off and was only in it to pass the exam. But Denken on the other hand, simply passing is not good enough for his rotten way of thinking.

I'm amazed how many of them didn't actually want to kill others. I have my doubts about Ubel being a psycho. Yeah, she killed bandits but she may be cruel to cruel people only. Very intriguing character.
For now I'm more pissed at Richter who wants(wanted?) to kill Frieren's companions even though he has the power to win without that.

Can't wait to see Frieren's duel. Considering how she had lost 6 times to human mages, we can't rule out she may lose.

Did I hear Mariya Ise after the credits?
"Chimp in state of nature never jerks off, but in captivity he does, wat does this mean? In state of nature he’s too busy, to put plainly. He is concerned with mastering space: solving problem of life in and under trees, mastering what tools he can, mastering social relations in the jockeying for power and status. Deprived of this drive to development and self-increase he devolves to pointless masturbation, in captivity, where he senses he is in owned space and therefore the futility of all his efforts and all his actions."

Fern and Wirbel's group against each other to capture the former group's Stille, Fern's magic, learnt from Frieren, it's a cruel thesis of power.

Back to Ubel and Wirbel, the challenge for the Stille as the former tests the latter's binding skill, both have seen their fair shares of Hell. For Wirbel, being part of the Northern Magic Corps, he has seen women and children being a part of war, so Ubel is no different to him, even if he hesitated. Fern, having taken down Ehre, Wirbel's 8th group has failed the test, though it's unnecessary to kill him after the fact. As for Land, despite having a beating down, he manages to also take down Scharf as part of his observation skills. Despite Wirbel having lost the battle, Wirbel's ambitions to destroy demons have not changed since having a crush back in his young days. despite having saved Ehre's village the same way. And a coincidence to have fought Fern's group while watching and capturing a free Stille in the process, what for to fight so much?

Meanwhile, Frieren's group facing Denken's group, as proctors Sense and Genau witness their faceoff. Of course, dwarves like Denken know Frieren as part of the Hero's Party, but the true deal is leaving at least one of them unconscious as to lose their position in the test. This to Denken, being a first-class mage, Frieren shares the same sentiments, though the special privilege from the living grimoire Serie that grants one immense spell of what the user desires, this, to mages, are just blasphemy.

Richter taking both Lawine and Kanne while Denken takes on Frieren, apart from the young hot-blooded, those of old age, that will be the battle of the century.

Decent episode but again, wouldn't say this is close to this series' best. The action was good and certain scenes were nice here (especially with how the action itself and some of the strategies involved were laid out), but this episode definitely reeked of some of the regular battle shounen vibes from the flow between the different perspectives of battles to the slower pacing and dialogue choices. At least some of the stalling was justified as Wirbel did claim to buy time, and the action itself still looks really good and displays a good mix of strategic elements and pure overpowering strength like how Fern walked through Ehre. Ubel seems like an interesting character too to explore more in detail from a more detailed look here. Cliffhanger between Frieren taking on the old man Denken is decent (and even learning before that part about the stakes of being a First Class Mage and the special reward given by Serie of any spell exclusively to them provided by the living grimoire) but in general, the nature of the last few episodes being more battle-shounen esque while being good in some ways, doesn't feel as generally intriguing or fresh as what the series established itself to be in the earlier episodes. It is solid and for the most part, decently executed but definitely didn't showcase enough of what made me fall in love with this series' writing in the first place + it did drag at times too in the middle of the episode and didn't have that 5 minute episode feel that a lot of other episodes gave. There are definitely action-packed episodes in different anime that are great and feel so immersive that time flies by, this wasn't quite one of them for me but by no means a poor one.

So Fern actually caught a Stille by luck. Makes sense I guess.

Wirbel isn't the psychotic mercenary I thought he was. He seems to have some compassion too. Even for a psycho like Ubel. Also, I wonder who his childhood crush was...?

It's great how Fern's team was able to ward off the attackers and keep their Stille.

Fern's bluff was great tho. Not sure how I'd feel if she actually killed that girl lol.

It's great that Wirbel's team found a Stille at the last second. Would like to see them again.

Denken also seems to be the type who doesn't want to kill when it's unnecessary. Didn't think he'd be like that. Wonder why he wants the first-class title.

So, we finally got more context of what kind of privileges the first-class mage title gives you. Frieren loves collecting spells but the spell I can see her asking for is the one that'd somehow make her reunite with Himmel...

Too bad this episode didn't have the fight between Frieren and Denken. Guess I'll have to wait another week for that...

@2Weeb4U2be My verdict wouldn't be quite as harsh as yours but I do feel that the last two episodes have been a lot weaker than the ones that came before. Most everything has gone down in quality, but I'm concerned most of all about the poor directing in this last episode. It was fine in 19, I just felt that they were saving the budget, but 20 really is quite naff. Here's hoping they put the spared budget into the Frieren vs Denken fight.

Wasn't the best episode due to how much slower things were here this time around, but I felt that the anime handled the large amounts of dialogue a lot better than I thought it would, plus said dialogue at least made a lot of sense and didn't feel redundant for the most part.
Not terrible, but not particularly fantastic. Still notably better off than how most battle shounen in the same or similar positions.

I don't get why this arc is dragging on. The whole premise continues to feel awkwardly forced and a departure from the tone of everything previously.

I don't get the 'teenager geniuses' rather than veterans and scholars. Why we're suddenly doing 'my hero academia' with quirky spells, I have no idea. I have zero investment in any of the hastily presented characters or the suddenly revealed reward of the exam.

This drags the score of the show pretty hard.

@-Sleek- I actually don't remember what rank was required. If you say it's first I'll take it at face value, but then I have to question why there'd be a requirement for a rank that's never been achieved to pass.
That makes the development worse, not better.
