We know that anime is a medium aimed at kids and people that just want to shut their brains off and stare at a screen to pass time, that's why battle shounen is and will always be the king.
When you make such viewers think and challenge them to learn the rules of a new game they often give up. This results in many people dropping Chihayafuru and giving it bad scores.

I mean, I have watched every sports anime in the top 200 (that's how I discovered Chihayafuru) and nothing comes even close.

Do you agree that for this very reason Chihayafuru is underrated?

I don't think all people give bad marks for trying to make you learn new game rules, or for being a pain in the ass to learn. If anything, I did not like the depiction of people and romance in this work.

Personally, I prefer "Hikaru no Go" which has less romantic elements than "Chihayafuru".

Personally, I think this work is not underrated, but overrated.

Yep, they do. You just have to read the threads about people complaining about not understanding karuta.
Then check what score they gave to this anime...

@AnimeIs4Kidz

Are you ok ?

You ask others if this anime is underrated and if they say it is not, you tell them to read a thread of people complaining that they don't understand karuta.

Did you start the thread without considering the possibility of being told that it is not underrated?

Sorry, it's not that I don't understand karuta. I have actually played karuta and learned about the waka written on the karuta in school.

Everyone has their own opinion of anime. If you want me to judge whether or not it is underrated based on the score, just say so.

There is no need to generalize... I finished Chihayafuru season 1 yesterday and it was good, had some really obvious flaws and I couldn't engage with karuta at all, but I enjoyed the character moments and compelling storylines. I will most definitely be checking out season 2 but I'm not ready for that OP change😔

I see that you've watched a lot more sports anime than me but I'm afraid you haven't watched Diamond no Ace yet which is everything I think a sports anime should be and then some.

I wouldn't say, that three seasons, two cours each constitutes as underrated. Though people may not talk a lot about it, because of that Karuta game itself not appealing to a lot of people, while everything else about the show is phenomenal.

I think it’s fairly rated. I’ve seen criticisms about karuta and it leading to people dropping it but that’s justified if it didn’t appeal to them. I never heard of karuta before I first watched it but I fell in love with it. There were matches over the 3 seasons that had me on the edge of my seat. I hope madhouse fully adapts it one day but that may be wishful thinking. I’m happy you enjoyed it though.

I had a friend illustrate this for me. It was a fun process to experience.

It's rated pretty good here, but even better on sites like AniDB, because they prioritize the value of "elitist" ratings over casuals.
If you reply back to me and I never respond, I lost interest and don't care. Sorry about that.

I’m not going to lie it took me almost a whole season to get into it. I like shounen battle scenes and actions sports like Haikyuu so this one was a little slow at first. But once I realized it was more about the characters I fell in love with it. The last season made me cry like a baby.

I totally agree.
Chihayafuru just has so mamy gems under its cover. People just have to make the effort to notice and understand them. Chihayafuru even though its a sport is very heavely focused on poems, emotions and hidden meanings behind every single character or situation.

Personally for me Chihayafuru is one of my favourite anime/manga I ever watched and read. It is just so painful to see how shafted is shoujo/josei media, we have so much to show yet no one really pays attention <\3

Idk dude. Chihayafuru seems to have done well. Both seasons are ranked i the 8s. Compared to how many people watched and dropped, there’s quite the gap. I don’t think its underrated, i do imagine that an old card game wouldn’t really appeal to some (if it’s not a battle anime) but then again chihayafuru was fairly successful.

Also, don’t be naive about anime being aimed at kids. It’s for all and for the most part it’s interesting so I don’t imagine you can just shut your brain off.

I looked at your list. You’re still missing some of the best sports anime. Come back when you make a real dent.

It's a shame that it's not in the top 200
Let me know the name.

Btw I don't consider superpowers as sports anime, maybe it's that.

The fact that Blue Lock -a battle shounen disguised as sports- has a better score says all about your average anime fan.
