Yup, the financial and business side of sponsors and the sports world can be tough. This is another one of those cases...

Competition also drives spending between teams. Honestly, I think we're just getting a small taste of what competitive racing is like in their world and will surely get more intense later on.

OST is decent.

Koya decides to sponsor Komari Motors as a photographer, though he's still relatively new to Formula 4, which Haruka must teach him the ins and outs of it. But just like F1, the costs are astronomical to maintain quality, regardless of teams being privateers or actual conglomerates. Even team ovner Futoshi was once a Komaki driver that due to circumstances within Haruka's family, that the only son wanted to continue the tradition and legacy that his father left behind. Making ends meet as a garage team, Komaki Motors worked doubly hard for their quality, which surprises Koya. A call from Saeko (his ex-wife) leads Koya back to his old friend of Ena to help in a photoshoot, featuring Belsorriso's top-shot garage.

What Koya found were potential sponsors, though the results speak for themselves that the sponsorship will not go ahead. Enthusiasm and spirit alone are not enough to keep the machines running, and Koya has no short of connections to take time and find suitable ones for Komaki Motors...but like a rollercoaster, Koya shoots at opportunities when they're present to secure spots. And as much as the marketing goes around, all they get are complimentary gifts, and as an enthusiastic boy throws his spirit onto them, so does their hopes go up, with a small sticker.

Baby steps to greatness, this is just the first step.

Huh, so this did opposite to what MF Ghost did; feature a race in the first episode and the second episode only shows parts of races and presents the main characters' backstory.

Koya underestimated how expensive motorsports are with his initial sponsorship proposal. He visits his supercar-driving friend's team and sees the contrast between them and Komaki motors.

The bigger potential sponsors weren't all that impressed by seeing Haruka race and going to local small businesses only got them free food.
Kamen Rider Drive reference out of nowhere.

i was a little upset nobody took up the offer to sponsor haruka, but it's also not surprising since it seems like they were all smaller businesses. the scene with the little boy was adorable though. definitely their most valued sponsor!

are they going to publish that picture koya took of haruka crying? feels like a bit of an invasion since it didn't seem he liked the fact the photo was taken in the first place, but im betting it'll bring in some sponsors.

really enjoying this so far even though ive never really been into racing. it's interesting learning about the different rules and such.

Said it before, but I really love how we have two racing shows this season with very different approaches. MF Ghost will probably be the better “anime” because of nostalgia for Initial D and the more anime-y oriented races.

But Overtake! actually shows the behind the scenes aspects of the racing industry, how teams function, make money, the actual real life nitty gritty of it. It’s even cooler that these two shows air on the same day so you can watch a crazy drift race in MF Ghost and then watch a racing team be built from the ground up in Overtake!

This episode was really good. I was wondering where they’d go from the introductory episode and this was exactly what the show needed. A nice characterisation episode that fleshes out the team, the characters and the MC.

Haruka’s backstory is very sad. No wonder he’s a bit gloomy. Losing both your parents at such a young age.. all he has is racing. It’s not just a passion, but an escape from the pain of his past. It’s also a way to feel connected to his dad who lost his life in an accident. Reminds me of Dale Earnhardt Jr in a way.

But passion and enthusiasm alone aren’t enough to run a racing team. Those cars are expensive and require a lot of maintenance. That means you need sponsors. The struggle was very real for them today as they tried to find some supporters. Couldn’t help but laughing at how all the small businesses could only give them food in return lmao.

Arguably the most important sponsor of all, an innocent little kid gave the biggest endorsement possible though. It’s funny how pure and blunt kids can be, but that pep talk was exactly what Haruka needed to hear.

Can’t wait to see where we go next week! Hope Troyca keeps cooking with this

@Hashiriya_weeb87 For Jos Verstappen, I think he poured all his frustrations and hopes into giving his son the best racing environment he could give back when Max was young. I know that's still not enough; you need the TALENT. And to win 10 races in a row (breaking the F1 record) and to win three championships, you need to be the best among these talented racers.

Instead of cliché sob story, they should show more racing. I blinked and missed the whole "race", didn't even show what sponsors got so off-put by, or his driving. We only got 12 episodes, get a move on.

we learn more about the characters and costs, can be really rough. my only gripe so far is the mc is a bit too loud for my liking, especially for a show like this, but the visuals are still solid and the cars looked great. last week's episode was slightly better than MFG's but MFG easily cleared this week lol.

Well, back to square one ^^

But even if they didn't manage to get anything done for the team, it was so nice to see the neighbourhood cheer for Komaki and "fuel their driver".

A sweet feelgood episode with a bit of comedy. I wonder if that's the direction this show will take, cause there's still Madoka's trauma and the whole racing to win thing. But I personally wouldn't mind it.

This show has everything I like.

Asking for sponsorship, and getting given "gifts" to "go away." Lol.

When he told the photographer it's $11M a year to run a team, that passion and enthusiasm aren't enough, that was like the reality check needed. After this scene I finally understood a few things about people, and cars:-
1. Cars are immensely appealing because there's nothing like speeding really fast down a road at night listening to your song of choice (Springsteen's Born to Run) reveling in the wind rushing fast and that feeling of ... Freedom
2. This is why people buy expensive sports cars when they hit a mid life crisis, not necessarily for the material item, but for how it makes them feel when they drive it
3. Rich Celebs with too much money who happen to love cars, will absolutely spend $$ indulging their hobbies. Some of them are actually great drivers - see Simon Cowell and Tom Cruise on Top Gear.
4. Those who are competitive will "race" (some idiots do this on freeways where it's not safe, I'm sure we've all met "those" drivers)
5. Others watch car-porn shows like Top Gear, Fast and Furious, F1, Motocross, Daytona, Nascar or racing anime. Because we can't afford those really nice cars ourselves but we still get a thrill when watching others in nice, fast cars.

The photographer ... I love him. He clearly had trauma. It messed him up. He's divorced. His ex-wife is still supporting him from the background. This car racing F4 thing has re-ignited his passion and now he's found something "new" to devote his energies to, he's got a purpose in life. I love anime that show this, there's a superficial level but when you think deeper he's found his purpose. A very powerful thing, that changes a person's life trajectory.

nlike episode 1 which really grabbed me with the race and that crying scene, this one took a small step back but was no less impactful. I'm surely going to enjoy Racing Sunday anime for the rest of this season. Overtake is in the lane of things I love watching, so I hope more people watch this!

In the world or motorsports, its all about sponsorships because running a racing team can be an expensive endeavor. Koya and Haruka tried to ask the local business for sponsorship in the form of advertising, but once again no results. Komari Motors manged to get a small endorsement of spirit with a Raceman sticker. It would also help if Haruka started winning races or find ways to improve his lap times.

Loved episode 1 more than 2 though 2 had nice scenes of progression and enthusiasm that I felt the love the production team has for the series. I do want to see the progression and struggles of the boys on the other teams though, hope they can weave development them in.

Best scene was the Raceman kid as well as visiting the local shops. Love their grassroots campaign.

Really they should consider getting some online campaign for sponsors...like, reminds me of i believe the past two seasons nascar redditors got enough money to get sponsorship on nascar car...

As a motorsport fan i still can't get over that the team is struggling financially and yet in the first episode we can clearly see "Powered By Tom's" on the car

For those people that don't know Tom's is the factory backed Toyota team.
Usually when a car has a "Powered By *insert team here*" on their car it usually means the car is ran by said team.

I know its for the plot of the anime that the team is struggling, but just wanna point a small detail that kinda bothers me xd

This was my exact thought at the end of last episode, how on earth would a photographer afford to be a sponsor? Glad this was just his delusion speaking and he was quickly brought back to reality.

It was a nice episode though. The endeavour to find a sponsor among regular shopping district was kinda doomed to fail, but I don't think it was in vain. Now everyone knows about Haruka and his team, and would support him and spread a word, which is also valuable.

I mean Haruka is not wrong, how are you going to sponsor somebody without money

Interesting so Haruka’s dad was a racer too. It’s unfortunate that he passed away while racing. Also, Koutarou looked upset, I wonder if something is going on.

Desperate times call for desperate measures. I like how they just kept giving them free food lmao. Zero sponsors, but they got food, a win is a win.

Yeah Koya needed a reality check as I was wondering how he was going to sponsor Komaki's team. At least Komaki and his team were good sports about it and they still may get sponsors over time, especially when Haruka improves his driving and ranking through more experience as he's still young (I believe he's still in high school).

They do mention (in this episode?) that the team leases the engine, and like the chassis these are homologated... so my assumption was that everyone would be running the same TOM's engine throughout the entire field.

Aha, wiki actually does confirm this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Formula_4#Homologated_engines but seems there are a few options rather than just the Toyota there's likely Honda out there too. Time to try spot more decals :D

Glad to see Madoka helping out Asahina in this episode. There needs to be more backstory with Asahina though and perhaps a better understanding with Madoka's goal.

Hopefully that will expand more towards these next few episodes.

I thought I knew that car racing was an expensive sport but I didn't expect it to be that expensive. Mr. Ena must be very rich to see the luxuries that Belsorosso has.

It was all thanks to Madoka's roller-coaster spirit and the positive energy of an innocent child that Haruka regained his spirit and confidence. I'm rooting for you Harukaaaa!!

By the way Sae-chan got Haruka's crying photo lol, I don't know where she'll publish it but I hope Haruka doesn't die of embarrassment judging from his previous reaction where he wanted to throw Madoka's camera xD

Cliffhanger again. Liked how the episode ended. The ex-wife might get the racer boy published in her magazine. (If I understood it correctly it is targeted at a female audience trying to sell - amongst other things - hot guys and using the racing sport as kind of a source.)

There might be a lot of sponsors popping up soon. :D

Looking forward to more - also to more of the older main's past. From the new anime probably the best. Have not watched everything but from the things I wanted to watch ... all with episodes 1 watched so far. Might compete with Goblin Slayer (from the prequel stuff - a lot of anime this season) for the top spot on my personal seasonal ranking.
