Kiruko's backstory is here and it's pretty wild. A failed man eater solo mission has led to a whole brain transplant and the abandonment of the orphanage he grew up in. The fish man-eater being drawn earlier is also very interesting!

Never thought this episode would be the way it was. The story of kiriko and haruhi is just fucked up. To be locked up in your sisters body, who you thought was dead. It's confusing and I hope we will get more answers in next episodes.

Also, baby's who don't have faces???

Quite an interesting backstory. Likely Haruki's, now Kiruko, sister sacrificed herself by offering her body to her brother so that he may live on in her place. Look back at the previous episode, the boy in wheelchair had those black marks on the skin, same as the lady who entrusted Maru to Kiruko. Combined with the future tech gun and Maru's abnormal physical ability, I think the lady and him are both from the enclosed facility and they may be something like a genetically modified new human race, same as those other kids in the facility.

I've read the manga a few times now, but I never picked up on the fact that there was a gunshot (?) when Haruki's consciousness is fading. That's...hm! Looking back at the manga, the sound effect placed there isn't that suggestive, so I guess it makes sense nobody translated it as such? (The official translation says it's a "flash"). Either way, very interesting information.

Inazaki Robin's voiced by Zoro's VA, his voice is instantly recognizable.

The backstory was good. The Man-eating monsters seem to digest human bodies as soon as they come into contact, this makes them more dangerous and something about their anatomy tells me they are man-made.

Kuku says that human babies don't have faces, this can mean that the doc who transferred Haruki's consciousness to Kiruko's body might be the man behind the facility or the man that pioneered the research program.
They might have taken people's consciousness from the outside world, put them into these faceless babies, and cloned them.

I don't understand this episode the girl and the boy both have dark brown hair now the boy is supposed to be in his sister's body but the hair is light all of a sudden?  🤔

I hope this is explained in detail, the episode really confused me

you can also see that the hair grows in this hair color, the voice is also different or am I wrong? 🤔

Great episode it was 24 minutes long but felt like 10 minutes to me. Kiriko’s backstory was just so interesting that time flew by so quick😭 the mystery element in this anime just keeps getting better and better I love it😩

So we got to see Kiruko’s backstory and how Haruki got his mind transferred inside her body, what I think happened was Kiruko died and the Doctor transplanted Haruki’s brain inside her body since he was just limbless body. Still fishy to me how he did it and that he immediately left town after the operation but we’ll see his true intentions as the episodes go by.🧐

That fish that appeared on the window at the end looks similar to the drawing in the flashback with the kids inside that encampment at the very last minute of the episode after the ending song🤨

I only got to watch the episode a few minutes ago and, while I was right about the mind transfer, I didn't think it was so mundane as transpanting the brain.

About the scene when, now Kiruko "discovers" his new body, well, that's only natural: we all did it when we were very young and were discovering our bodies.

Turns out Kiruko is not looking for "Heaven" as in "a place". It is more like "a person": the doctor.

I'm not trans, I just like some variety in shows I watch. I've seen many characters have basically the same struggles with some variations sprinkled in, what's so bad with me wanting to see some different perspectives? It would be much more interesting to me than another body swap plot. Seems a tad bit lazy to me, and like it's pandering to viewers who don't see trans as sane. At least this time it's a post-apo body-swap, I guess...

Haruki "die" because of... STUPIDITY!
FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF
No, seriously, this was unacceptable! Death or worse is not enough for him, he could even had prevented the race from starting but.... FFFFFFFFFFFFFFF!!

aaaaaaaaaahhhhhhh...

Oh, lets go won.
Someone shot. When Haruki was losing conscience a gunshot could be heard. That gunshot sound was repeated when it shows his cranium opened during the surgery. Is this the biggest mystery? No one in that place seemed to own guns.

Not I have to say, at the same time things are mysterious they are also more obvious?
Someone pointed me that the fish monster in the end of the episode appears to be the same monster the kid in school draw in a previous episode.

And with Kuku line it seems that no one there is really a normal human as we suspected, they are all genetically engineered explaining their mysterious abilities.

It's the habitual then?
The monsters may come from that place, and some may even be engineered humans that failed?
These kids are like the monsters, only with a human form? And the "experiment" in this "school" is to see if they can behave like human beings?

Not that mysterious anymore but that doesn't matter.
What matters is how this all relates to the characters, right?

SoraSenpai said:
At this point we have to ask why Hazuki's brain was put into Kiruko's body. The Doctor was researching man eaters and the such but I see no benefit to this unless the two kids have some unknown hidden abilities.

Still wondering how the facility is involved.

Considering the state of Haruki's brother was there other way to save him?
The question is, was Kiriko really death? The nurses apparently saw her coming into the hospital as dead as him.

For some reason they skipped the part where Haruki basically gave up on life and was planning to just stay in the bed and die in order to reunite with sister and friends. This kinda redeemed a sister-loving guy in my eyes.

What an episode!
..I am split about Kiruko-Haruki brain transplant thing.. it could either be brain/soul transplant, or as the lady said - the shock of losing her brother messed up her psyche where she thinks she is him.. which would be more insane, to me atleast. But, such a well-directed episode.. until the last dialogue, the mystery goes on. I have so many questions and can't wait for next episode.

Pretty good adaptation of the manga so far, with flawless production. If this goes on until the end, this anime will be one of my all-time favorite indeed.
My take on the trans discussion: people should stop trying to force things on animes. If there's a trans character, it's fine. If what could be a trans but is actually something else, that's because the story is made that way and there's no reason to complain. In this case in particular, all this back story is pretty meaningful for the whole development, so stop picture it as a misrepresentation of a trans character, it's just not a trans character, period. Deal with it.
My take on the masturbation scene: anyone who would find himself or herself in a body of the opposite sex would do this kind of experiment, including ladies who would find themselves in a male's body. There's nothing weird in that, it's just trying to understand how your new body reacts and how you perceive its reactions. It actually confirms to me that the author give some thoughts to this body swap and how his character would manage it instead of just using it as a plot device.

I have a question, was Haruki’s sister his actual sister or did he just call her that like Maru calls Kiruko?
I don't think Haruki's sister is his bio sister as they were living together in an orphanage and also that would make his feelings and sexual attraction to her a bit more appropriate :p

But the flashback they are really sister and brother and Kiriko was taking care of him alone since little.

it's true what @assholeierThanU pointed:

Them I imagine this "school" is some government facility, maybe, researching the monsters, if it's possible to tame them or create monsters with human form like Maru to fight with the wild monsters.

EDIT; there's the possibility that the date there is Tengoku 17, June 23

Also, around 16 min mark was he touching/masturbating with his sister's body (and thinking about her)? Or did I get that scene wrong?

Don't you think there's enough variety in Tengoku as is?!
Also, this isn't the only anime airing this season you know? You have exactly what you wish for in other series airing right now, for example, Skip to Loafer.

Peepsqueeker said:

There's nothing wrong with wanting more perspectives, but you're wrong to assume that the Japanese deal with the same societal issues as they do so in the west. While LGBT and trans in particular is a recurring and overly pandered topic in the west, it's not so much in Asia or pretty much any other region aside from Europe and the US. I'm not particularly interested to see anime/manga turn into absolute trash just for the sake of pandering with 1-dimensional stereotypical characters, because a minority group wants inclusion like many of the current-day movies/TV shows released in the west.

Asian people are people just like "us.
Yes, they have the same societal issues as everyone else.
There's this wrong idea that there's no LGBT-etc struggle there, but there are, even if it's not easy for us to see at a distance. It's sad because all these problems for LGBT people and anti-LGBT behavior are actually something new, much imported was from the "western judaico-christian world" very recently in their efforts to become "civilized".

But anyway, there isn't much to discuss about this in this series.
Let's focus on the mysteries and... something I want to know, now that the "prologue" ended, can we still expect this same high level of animation until the end? We can see that they put a lot of effort and care until now, but the production still have the budget and time to keep this quality? It'll be a real shame if it starts to drop in the next episode.

god this episode was insanely good. unfortunate that kiriko and haruki were victims of the doctor's human experimentation. i wonder if he had some kind of goal with this because he just straight-up disappeared after the surgery. also i don't really think robin is dead - i wouldn't be surprised if maybe he was captured by the doctor because of his investigating

We all by now know that Haruki brain was transplanted to Kiruko body. Most probably by her getting shot by someone and had ending up brain dead. And so she ending up saving his brother.
BUT! This going to sound crazy for most but hear me out.
What if we put aside the fact that we were showned the brain surgery and instead we take in consideration what the nurse (or something) said that she ended up with a trauma over her brother's death so big that she now assumed his identity? And now "he" seeks to find the whereabouts of the doctor to know why "her sister" was killed or sacrified herself over him?
Both the brain surgery and the sound of the shot before the transition after she was with the brother dying could very be memories created by herself from some kind of coping mechanism for to belive that she IS her brother.
I know that the wounds on her head are hard evidence of the transplant. But what if all this is an frabrication of her trauma?
Just to make you think even more over was happened in this episode right? :D

Anime only here. So in the previous episode at around the 11min mark we are shown cameras observing the children. In the bottom left corner you can see that its dated 2023. The flashback that occurs in this episode is dated as 2034 (11 years from then). The flashback is stated to be 5 years  prior to the events of the main story when the main girl is 15 years old (which would make it 2039) . Also in the previous episode they said that they were only 5 years old when the world-changing tragedy ocucrred.
In the "Heaven" compound the kids seem to be some sort of x-men type experiments with enhanced physical capabilities as well as some having additional powers.  For example - the girl in episode one who foresaw that there would be a test coming up. Another example is the white haired artist boy who I initially assumed could see beyond the walls of the compound or into some sort of parallel dimension where the creatures that he draws live.
These children are bred for a cause, we know that they are test-tube babies because the end of the episode proposes that the children in the compound seem to start off as faceless.
The kids in the compound wonder about going outside of their outside.
So far all of this leads me to believe that these kids are what cause the tragedy to occur. And the maneaters are either the drawings brought to life by the white-haired artist boy, or more likely they break what holds the dimensions apart and release the man-eater creatures into the world.
Meaning the tomato farm that delivers to tokyo is likely a red herring because the timeline doesn't line up.
Its entirely possible that the white haired artist is the doctor who performed the brain surgery on the MC. (Although it could be one of the other white haired boys, or anyone really. But basically the white haired artist is more than likely a major antagonist if not the overall big bad)
Most if not all of this was likely obvious to everyone but I don't have any friends who are watching this really enjoyable anime alongside me so I just wanted to write down my thoughts somewhere and share them.
So, if my maths are good, that mean what we are seeing in the complex occurred 1 year before the world-changing event which then took place in 2024.
Having 2 points of view for the story already add a layer of complexity but now, we know that the events in the complex occurred 26 years before what we saw outside, it just add more stuff to think of ! I love it !

I can't wait to see the link between the complex and the monsters and maybe the link with the doctor.

Then the question gets asked: How do you deal with such an angelic face when there is a boy's mind behind the facade? Maru got in a deep shit with his feeelings for "her" that he will have to deal with in the next episodes I guess.

Tbh this could be resolved quite quickly. Haruki should stop letting his hair grow and try to look more manly, I mean that's what I would do in his situation unless he likes fingering his sis' body too much when she's pretty

A fish with arms huh... so a bunch of that kids drawings are somehow maneaters or what? This episode explained quite a bit. All those orphans that went missing just happen to look like a bunch of the kids in heaven? Definitely some sus shit here. Also this explains why Kiruko was unsure of her age. From a world building standpoint we also get to see how much of a society there is. Things can't be that bad if there was recreational electro car racing on that scale.

With such shapely body and boobs like hers no short haircut would help the problem. She would just look and behave more like a tomboy, and who knows maybe that just would make her more appealing in Maru's eyes.

The main thing I'm appreciating right now is the animation. The character work, action and environment all draw me in closer to the story. I appreciate how lived in the environment feels, and how organically the characters are situated within it. The story is mysterious and refreshing and I also love the character designs and music.

I think this makes the story simpler for us.
Instead of getting to a point where the story stops to info dump "explaining" what happened as traditional makes it harder to understand. If we are seeing those characters in the past as things happen we have time to process the bits of information and fit all the pieces by ourselves.

I’m starting to think the kids at the facility are maybe dangerous and that injection we saw in ep 2 is to put the lookalike one down.. if the kid drawing is somehow making the maneaters appear in the world is it possible they brought about this great calamity that’s being referenced? I’m probably way off but that’s my theory for now lol

also, what was that gunshot? did someone shoot the monster and it hit kiruko in the head causing her to be brain dead and leading to the transplant? guess we’ll see
I loved seeing the backstory I definitely thought kiruko was struggling with gender identity so the twist was very unexpected

having said that… why is the world so into incest? I almost said just anime/Japan but damn near every other porn has incestuous themes and huge shows like game of thrones feature it so it’s like what the hell man lol it’s so weird
