I....was not expecting that. I mean the premise sounds like a snore fest- an anime about making dictionaries isn't exactly appealing to me, but the phrase "don't judge a book by it's cover" seems extremely fitting in this case!

It seems to have potential and I immediately adored Majime. I just wanted to cradle the man this entire episode- the way he's so polite, introverted and slouches when he walks. Adorkable.

Also, kudos to the studio for animating people so damn well...it's rare to get that attention to detail. You could tell what sort of characters Majime and Masashi were before they even spoke because of their posture and the way they moved. I was in awe.

Hopefully it doesn't get boring...I'm not usually a fan of slice of life anime, but we'll see where this one goes!

Majime really is a lovable character right off the bat, imo... his definition of "right" was so thoughtful, i was impressed ♥

i don't always have the patience for Calm Mature Adult Anime like this but since i can appreciate a bit of language nerdery i'll probably stick with it. the animation looks pretty fresh too, while the palette isn't very exciting the fluidity of the movement is nice on the eyes

This is one of those anime who tells their story in slow pace yet gives enough attention to details. Just from watching the 1st episode I can already predict that I'll watch it till the end of the series.

Majime seems to be a 'hyoro-hyoro' kind of guy based on how he stands and talk. He does seem to be not fit in the sales department and I wonder how he manage to be in there till now.

I had never pay much attention to dictionaries that I thought most of them are the same but after watching the 1st episode it does change my mind about it. Hope the quality of the story telling would be great until the last episode.

Very captivating first episode, they portrayed Majime as less hopeless socially awkward bookworm at the anime compare with the movie adaptation, he is even reliable I think. But I am open to any necessary changes as long as it allows me to get different experience between the medium.

Watched late, was actually kinda good! The unusual cuts were fun

But Sakurai-san's voice was a tad too recognizable, maybe?

Among all the lolicon, action, sports, highschool love story animes, ones like this almost disappears and noone bothers to even look out for an relatable-to-life anime.I was originally planned to skip this anime because the synopsis sounded lame af. But now that I watched the first episode,I realized how wrong I was. This is a refreshing type anime dealing with working lives of people, a great insight to how businesses work and tasks employees have to do. Animes like this really works as a nice break from all those typical types of animes we watch all the time/

This was a nice start, it already feels like it would be more suitable for audiences that aren't whiny teens

I found the climactic back-and-forth to be more awkward than dramatic. That aside, seems promising in presentation and topically. I hope there'll be less of the heavy-handed visual metaphors moments.

After reading the synopsis, i became interested in it, and my 1st impression for the 1st episode is really good,The OP is catchy and ED is good, i usually dont watch this genre but somehow the feel, maturism and realism attract me. How meaningful "words" are, how complicated and awesome dictionary is, and how dictionary was made. Those keep me interested in this series, and the genre also listed as romance, well i wonder how romance adapted in it since romance is one of my fav genre :D
For now, lets see how this series goes :))

Interesting first episode. Totally saw it coming when he talked about "air" that he was the one Araki is looking for. This feels real different from the other animes I've been watching, including its animation style, which is good in its own way.

The opening was strong and meaningful. I really like the analogy, that a dictionary is a ship carrying people through the sea of words to convey their message.

When I first heard about this anime from a friend who recommended it to me, I was intrigued because "an anime about making a dictionary?" Couldn't imagine how that'd be interesting, but it is! I like how chill, deep, and thoughtful it feels.

Not really sure about the opening, feels kind of out of place for me.

Really really looking forward to watching more episodes!

Interesting premise but the way in which Majime ended up joining the dictionaries deparment felt a little forced. On the other hand, I liked him a lot, he is adorable and relatable.

Pls help!

I'm right now in the middle of this episode and already dying of tedious.

I'm not even pausing the video while texting this. I dont like to drop any series, but i dont complete what i dont like.

Does it get more interesting later or is it all about dictionary (looks like a "sport" anime)

From just the first episode, The Great Passage is truly a fascinating anime that addresses the specialized field of dictionary writing, of which I've never considered to actually exist. From the moment Araki walked into the sales department, I think I have confidence in the show's competency. It's interesting to see the world through the eyes of someone entrenched in a specialized field, as their interpretation of life is vastly different compared to just about everyone else in the world. The subject of language dictation is also interesting, as the process of editing, I would assume, decides words that are relevant, useful, and are worth using in the vernacular of specific places and times.

In some ways, it's constricting to give certain people the right to decide what words are worth using, as well as their meanings. However, without word management and that oversight of language, it's difficult to establish a recognized baseline for communication, especially in scholarly and academic fields. It's something I've encountered in my own experiences in academia and the professional writing world, where language is important to be inclusive when talking about groups of people, sensitive to controversial terms from the past used in present contexts, and conscientious of word connotations, lest they be interpreted in ways you did not intend.

No single world view is necessarily more valid than others, and considerations for alternative interpretations is important. Yet, it's also important to narrow the meanings of words, as to highlight their value and usefulness in specific contexts. Without that, words can lose meaning if they can be applied haphazardly.

For example, the word "pretentious" when applied properly should describe a work inaccurately claiming to be of greater value that it really is, intentional or otherwise. This could be done via the apparent knowledge required to view and completely understand the work, or some overarching message that is more lofty than the work can properly represent. When "pretentious" is used outside of this context, it can be potentially applied to any work one deems too arcane, impenetrable, or just plain bad in one's opinion. This deteriorates the original meaning "pretentious" and risks losing the word to misuse. While it may be a natural part of language evolving, it does require another word to then describe works that are inaccurately representing itself.

These kinds of conversations can go on for a while, and I'm happy that The Great Passage is making me ponder upon them. This is a pretty interesting show, and I'm surprised I hadn't heard of it before.

ahhhh the voice work is AMAZING, as expected of sakurai takahiro & kamiya hiroshi! ♡___♡

i liked majime's character design, he looked more charismatic as the episode went by. loved the last scene when they went to find him, he was literally sparkling

for a subject matter that could have been so boring, the art direction was incredible, i loved the cinematography. the art was such a sight, simply amazing, animation was great as well, OST was so calming & immersive, great first episode, my favourite kind of anime - i think i'll really like this one :)

This was pretty exciting, but then again I used to love dictionaries when I was younger, especially discovering differences between languages and the etymologies that reveal how a concept has developed, and what the world view behind it is (especially when you know the concrete foundation of an abstract concept). Also, salaryman stories are usually nice to watch, so I guess I'm in the right demographic.

There were some "as you know" moments when colleagues talked to each other about dictionaries, explaining things to viewers rather than to each other. But I guess that's always a feature in these kind of niche shows, they try to educate people who are totally unfamiliar with the topic. And I didn't like the analogy of the dictionary as a ship that helps people cross a sea of words; the more I think about it, the less sense it makes.

Beautifully animated - most likely using rotoscoping, and great camera movement and angles.

for those who think this has a weird premise (aka who would care about different dictionaries), as a law student in America, I can tell you that many of our Supreme Court cases hinge on the definitions of words found in the dictionaries. They are often used by justices to divine the intent or meaning of words as understood by those who enacted our laws over the years. Thus, the quality of the dictionary is incredibly important.

Excited to see where this show goes next!

I hate it when anime/manga that I enjoyed ends, especially when there could be much longer plot and when I love main heroine :P

One thing I love about Japan is how deep everything is there, the people's names, the holidays.

Despite being such a small country, its cultural wealth is undoubtedly immense. That's why no matter what an anime is about, whether it's the country's folklore or the creation of dictionaries, I will always stop to watch or read.

I would like my country to give more value to these things, which seem small and insignificant, but which are part of who we are.
