THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
So this series is apparently the reboot/remake of the 1980s Dashing Warrior Muteking.

A dream come true from 2 veteran studios (Tatsunoko Production and Tezuka Productions), and IMMEDIATELY the music captivates me back to the 80s with the Japanese city-pop (with Mariya Takeuchi's Plastic Love for BGM at the beginning), funky rock style with Orange Range back from Bleach for the OP, and KALMA's ED with the totally Oresama lookalike visual style.

For MC Muteki, more than being a music connoisseur from the likes of Michael Jackson to being a carefree person, this premiere episode is giving me Percy Jackson vibes with the whole casino scene of consuming brainwashed products. This OctinQ which is basically the modern Apple conglomerate of their day, the CEO Theo Eight which is the equivalent of Steve Jobs, and DJ is just a wandering DJ with Parappa the Rapper vibes. Also, Neo San Francisco exacts that of the 80s American vibes.

Aurora reminds me of how flashy and trippy American celebrities can be of the past with their live events. But this weird alien "world domination" thing, and DJ transforming Muteki into Muteking the Dancing Hero, this is like those 90s series of when we used to watch kids shows back in the day.

Not sure how to see this series though, it's giving me the funk-ish, action vibes, and to do all of it through dancing, yeahhh...bring me back to childhood days I presume? This I have to really get used to with the kids theme being more prevalent than Megaton-kyuu Musashi, it just needs sometime to settle in.

Late to say this but @phantomfandom you've pretty much nailed this breakdown.

I just started and don't have high hopes but I'm thoroughly appeased by the use of "Plastic Love' at the very start

Love this! I've so many comments so I'll try to break down.

First of all, Orange Range OP! I've to admit that I just heard this band last year when Taiso Samurai decide to cover its single from 2003 "Shanghai Honey" as the OP. But they make a completely new song for MuteKing "Labyrinth". I think they want a retro sound but it also sounds new at the same time.

OctinQ is basically Apple, and it's very ironic that in real world, San Francisco is the first city that Apple products conquer, and people like DJ are basically the first one to line up buying iProducts.

Talking about DJ, which is the best element of the first episode. He's so cute, and daring, and of course I can see that he'll be a perfect match for Muteki. While at first Muteki seems to have a crush on Aida/Aurora, but I believe Muteki will win his heart from his mixtape ;)

Muteki reminds me a lot of Tribe Cool Crew and its spiritual successor Brave Beat. But don't get me wrong, since Muteki was first made in 1980, I believe Muteki is actually an inspiration to the later music/dance anime (excluding idol anime). I haven't watch the 1980 version and have no plan to. I think the 2021 version can satisfy me better due to more manservice.

This is supposed to be the voice acting debut of Mashiro, Kentarou, which was auditioned to voice Muteki, but the anime postponed from 2020 to 2021 so he voice another 1-minute episode anime in 2020. His sound is hot! I can see him voice more famous roles from now on.

This is actually my first Takahashi Ryousuke anime. And he's not the only legend on board of this. There's also Sasagawa Hiroshi. The super catchy opening song is from Orange Range who are best known for their iconic Bleach opening performance.

I like what I saw to far. It's colorful, it's funky. Fuck with the aesthetics and vibe. Let's see if I can get invested in anything beyond the style.

So to certain point this was like a cross between Macross Frontier and Tonkatsu DJ Agetarou...and after that became someone's recollection of having an acid trip while watching tokusatsu show.
Also the granny of the MC is like an elderly version of DJ Pon3.

This is strange in the bad way of the word. Is basically PaRappa the Rapper, against Apple, in a city homage to make look like cool having an edgy Taco Bell, with a 3D part worse than Pripara.

Is sad that an anime trying to make so many references dont have the guts to call the station 420 Square.

Saturday is looking like a bad day for this season.

ngl that roller skating dance fight thing made me cringe hard. I guess I'll watch a couple more episodes to see if the cringe grows on me because I don't mind the characters so far.

I loved this show. It's so colorful, wacky and full of personality, without being obnoxious. It could easily get obnoxious later, but for now, this show was so damn fun.

The CGi was just awful though. Really abysmal. Easily the worst part of the show. If the rest of the show wasn't so strong, I would have dropped it right at the start of the battle.

I hate the ears too. The insides are just pitch-black and it's distracting.

So, this is Saturday Night Fever meets Kamen Raider: The Animation? Where are the Bee Gees? And that black matter/thing can't be named a taco, as a mexican that offends me.
No tomo malas decisiones, solo me gusta apoyar causas perdidas.
Disfruté Mayoiga, Ou-sama Game, Evil or Live, Mirai Nikki, Big Order, Arifureta, Ex-Arm, Tesla Note, Shuumatsu no Harem y Platinum End

I thought this sounded absurd at first, but actually I agree. I kept thinking Muteki had earbuds or something in his ears.

They were using a double meaning with tako = octopus and taco the food I think. The black food was from squid ink. Burger King and McDonald's in Japan have both served burgers with black buns and other black parts from squid ink.

I don't get why it's rated so poorly, the first episode was funny and original, the 2D parts look charming, the 3D parts look funny and the characters are charming as well

I think that's an amazing reboot, it feels like the studio really knows what they're doing.
Storywise more or less what I expected, the interesting part will probably begin now.
I have been waiting for something like this after idk Brave Beats ended lol

And when they put on that 80s OST it was really nice, but the subtitles were a bit cringe lol
Either way the OP is also well done

I don't really have anything to complain with for now, I got exactly what I expected when coming in here

I agree, this show is just straight up hated like everytime a niche anime appears

really loved this first episode! I loved all the sparkly visual and sound effects, and the art style is so pleasing and colourful and the music is so nice too, I love the 80s vibe it has. The only issue I had was the 3d work when Muteking was fighting the sleepy guy looked a bit stiff at some points but that's it really.

Can't wait for the next episode :D

Yeah this was pretty fun, but just not my thing. I think people who enjoy the old school kamen riders and 80s vibes and design will get a big kick out of this though!

Promising start, defnitely not a flop, but can very easily tip over into being obnoxious with all the references, colour and plot. Has a very fine line it needs to walk here.

I have never seen or heard of Dashing Warrior Muteking from the 80s, so I decided to check it out. First of all the OP is a banger and the OST sounds amazing. I'm loving the 80s/Saturday night fever vibe this show brings. We know that Muteki has the power to change into Muteking thanks to DJ and Muteking's appearance reminds me of Viewtiful Joe. It still has the cheesiness of a Saturday Morning cartoon/Kamen Rider in a sense you have one person fighting against an evil entity that wants to take over the world.

Seeing Muteking rolling around in skates reminds me when I used to hit up the roller rinks when I was a kid. I believe this show has potential to be great, but still remain under everyone's radar.

Cringe I guess.
Aimed to those who have some kind of 80s nostalgia but it comes at the cost of degrade of everything animation, music and storytelling built over past 40 years.
Why not just to re-air old series if nostalgia is your only selling point?

"Muteki, I'm fucking your gran." - DJ DJ, probably.

I'm noticing more and more that incredibly specific aesthetics, such as in this case, retro-futurist-pop-america, work really well. Robot servers and tube-trains set against cassettes and skate diners just hit in a really nice spot, like a homage to an era that never was but could still be.
Well I for one already loved Lain.

Plastic Love???

No Funny Pizza Guy (literally his name), no blue rat here, just a street dancer doing Michael Jackson smooth criminal moves

Obvious Octopus Taco pun.

Octopus Alien Steve Jobs wants the city to replace their not Sony Walkmans with his not Apple iPod. Plot is absolutely insane. Bonkers I tell you. Octopus cells? WHAT?!?

Aida is no doubt Aurora, she can't be in the audience because she is working as the performer turning them into goo.

When Muteki henshins into Muteking, the entire environment of Neo San Francisco also transforms, reminds me of Zero Time from Star Driver.

DJ aka DJ is giving me similar vibes to Gauma from SSSS.Dynazenon, with Muteki has his Yomogi. So OctinQ are some evil octopus aliens and DJ is another octopus alien who has tracked them to Earth and needs to find someone to become the hero to defeat them...then enters Muteki.

I love the show already. The art is really interesting. I might unironically make this my favourite from the season so far.
The whole show reminds me of Tonkatsu DJ Agetarou even without the whole DJ stuff. Pretty avant-garde genre (not in the dementia tag way). It's really different from the norm, and I assume the rating's low for that very reason.

I didn't think I'd have so much fun with this anime, I didn't see the old anime and I didn't know anything, I just saw it because on the trailer there was the muteking dancing and I wanted to see where it's going to go.

The opening is really good, I heard it looping for a few hours after I saw the episode, I liked the characters even though it was very simple, the dancing part was incredibly fun

Some of the jokes didn't land for me, but the ones that did, came in pretty hard.

I dig a lot the acid trippy colorful scenearios along with the really great 3DCG used in Aurora's performance and the transforming hero sequences.

This is something I can already tell will be quite amusing in this season.

Oh wow! This was really fun! Neo San Francisco definitely feels like our own San Francisco: a confusing, chaotic mess. ouo But at least this is a vibrant, colorful, and nice-to-look-at city!
I'm definitely excited to watch more.
