Wow, that really is an old thread you pulled up. And yeah, I never dived into customizing my MAL other than the picture and header.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes (Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu) was the main thing I got from that thread. I haven't finished it but I did enjoy what I've seen of it.

I think you've watched many show I might recommend to fit that already.
Girls Und Panzer: Der Film was better than the TV series if you want to give that another go. But its also a sports anime.
Youjo Senki has elements of WW1 Tactics but also magic.
Berserk (1997) anime has tactics but it is medieval.

If you dont mind gundam... I'm not a huge fan of 'space magic' explaining things so I haven't watched a lot of gundam but I'd recommend 'Thunderbolt: December Sky' and 'The 08th MS Team'- maybe 'war in the pocket' at a stretch

Everything is planned and executed well. Characters grow, no plot armor, all actions have a consequence, no plot holes, and everything is mostly explained. Saying all of this great stuff but it's not for everyone. It's about war and politics with some history referenced. It can be slow at times cause it takes it's time with the story. They redid the first arc so you can find that but there's a lot more, obviously. I started with the original.
