but most importantly, the pacing is good. it looks like it's going to take its actual time to build the atmosphere of the world instead of going into the action.

I can't wait to see more Lena and Shin

Also, the Lena with here hair up tho

One thing I dislike is the character design. Shin just feels off for some reason.

Agreed they really butchered his character design.

Honestly as a pure anime viewer for this series with zero background knowledge nor any experience with this title at all in the past, this first episode did leave me kinda dazed upon what exactly is going on in this world and just essentially the overall setting of the story. It just sorta looked like they bounced between different scenes a bit too rapidly without giving much premonition or context and so I was dumbfounded on several details throughout multiple occasions (e.g. the specialized terminologies they were using as they coordinated in the battle, the time lapses that occurred, etc etc.). Not necessarily that the pacing's terrible, as I've heard many say that this episode simply adapted the first chapter of the LN, it was just that I guess the script was slightly lacking for a bit. Enjoyed that first ep regardless tho; was anticipating the premiere of this show ever since they announced the adaptation as the premise is just my type of thing and yea not disappointed as of now. Animation and art-wise looks p fine thus far; not too shabby but not phenomenal or anything - CGI does look decent tho. Looking forward to the next episode bois <3

This show seems pretty interesting. The cruel setting really intrigues me. I really like Lena's character. She seems like a really caring and intelligent girl(Probably waifu material). The CGI and the osts of this show are really well done. The scene where Kujo was killed was heartbreaking. I can already tell that this show is going to be very impactful. There's definitely potential with this show. I can't wait to see more!

Female lead is cute, i like the no-BS atmosphere of the 86, the premise is interesting, technology is very well depicted, architecture is really nice, and the commie undertones are interesting.

However, gonna assume they butchered source material's tone as i've heard good things about it, but damn,
RED FLAGS,
RED FLAGS EVERWHERE.

- MC is in start sequence portrayed as an ultra badass serious Gary Stu who slaughters ezpz unlikeable mooks
- Female lead is portrayed as an ideal waifu and, apologies for the term, moralfag that can see the wrong invisible to everyone else
- Zero ambiguity in conflict's moral showcase, white people = bad, but of course populace too dumb to notice
- Characters (like those employees at the start) have to unnaturally bring up stuff everyone in-universe already knows in discussions because plot exposition is too hard for the staff otherwise (no justification in fact; they actually do a good job with stuff like the self-explanatory interfaces of the Handlers)
- Opening sucks imho, that one's very personal but an uncanny amount of my enjoyment comes from OPs getting me in the mood.

You never know if quality is going to pick up later, but i'm not difficult and yet this didn't convince me. I can be optimistic and hope the ongoing "drama" of just being dogs to an EVULZ military is gonna plot twist soon for the actual plot, but 86 is literally the title, so just prepare the coffin dance gif for those poor souls already.

This got off to a pretty promising start, if it keeps this up this show can shape up to be one of the highlights of this anime season. I knew nothing about this going in but this first episode did a good job of holding my interest.
People on MAL refuse to actually enjoy watching anime.

A great premiere!

Introduced the characters, got the story rolling, the conflict was clear. Got me invested real quick. Glad to see A-1 pictures make a return!

What was really interested about this episode were the hair colors. All the citizens living in the city had light blue hair and the soldiers piloting the droids on the battlefield have a variety of different hair colors. Made me wonder, are those who are born without light blue hair sent to the battlefield?

Mecha is back baby.

We got thrown into this world and first start of in the perspective of Vladilena. We see she is a young major who shows empathy for the 86ers - a secret crew that are used to pilot the Republic's "unmanned drones"

We then get to see the perspective of the 86ers and their hatred towards the people in charge such as Vladilena. They don't even see Vladilena before labelling her a pig, likely due to their previous mistreatment by the Republic - since they are slaves kept secret from the rest of the other 85 districts.

Their was a dead man labelled "PIG" we saw in one of the first scene with the 86ers, so I assume that they play a large part in why the commanders of the 86ers all end up dead. They also drew a lady pig upon first hearing the voice of Vladilena.

This show started off with an interesting world and concept. I'm looking forward to seeing where the show takes off from here.

Wow. This show is dark and gritty and I like it. I'm sure what the story is behind the war against the Empire, but it seems like the military is forcing the people to their war for them by piloting the drones. The military is also determined to keep the number of casualties off the record to boos their PR within the general public. Lena seems like a nice person that care about the soldiers under her command and she's in charge the Spearhead squadron in the 86th district lead by Shin the "Undertaker".

The management of the soundtrack and the contrast between scenes I really loved. It is what we could expect from Sawano and Kohta Yamamoto the truth, the animation is fine, the CGI is not so bad (I saw some clips of the BTS of the creation of those ships in Aniplex Japan and it shows that they made him want), a very good first episode, the OP is fine but nothing more. This series gives me all kind of vibes. From AoT, to LotGH, even a bit of Hunger Games.

Lena could come off as a odd choice for the female lead, she's too cute xD but then again, she's also purpose driven as well as talented, yet she still lacks experience. Tonal shifts feel natural and the production in general looks pretty neat.

Promising start. This could be another A-1 hit.

Great episode. Good that they already showed both main characters. Would have been boring otherwise. I hope they are going to switch between them regularly.

And maybe some real plot development without this going on endlessly. But well ... it has a novel as source. Might take some time until they try to overthrow the system together - and until then just the guys fighting war with her as handler.

There's something almost insulting about the way that the main character emotes so hard for blips on a screen even while she unabashedly luxuriates in a life of comfort and luxury while unwilling to do anything to buck the system that she grieves so hard for the people she willingly exploits and sacrifices. It would make a lot more narrative sense if she was ignorant or uncaring. Or if she was reluctant to take on the work instead of champing at the bit even when told she doesn't need to do it. But look at the emotion in her voice as she gives hard orders. She feeeeeeeels for her exploited slaves she's murdering as she sits in her padded chair after enjoying tea. She doesn't enact bold, crazy strategies to save their lives. She doesn't sacrifice her own station for them. She follows her orders, but feels sort of bad about it. And we're supposed to sympathize with her for that.

And since it's a very uneventful episode, there's not a whole lot else to it except that. Melodramatic girl bums around for 15 minutes, occasionally being troubled by being a cog in a racist military industrial machine on steroids, but her life is comfortable, so it's only occasional pangs of conscience. Meanwhile, here's the battlefield. Blood and death. Stoic soldier boy executes a dying man. Yes, yes. Very societal. So much commentary. How about some characters with life, emotion, or actual engagement in the world to drive a story? Characters attempting to exert agency, to drive the story, to make it their own, to grow, to change, to change the world around them. Or are we just wallowing in borrowed misery while nibbling our biscuits, thinking that it'd be nice if things were different, but meh, not gonna be us to do that? There's certainly social commentary here, but it's not entirely what the show thinks it is.

So this is one of those shows which want to be really cool, really edgy and really beloved by the teens thus in result they come as really really stupid...
Nice visuals tho.

Besides being similar to Gundam IBO (as many people here mentioned) the first scene kind of reminded me a certain scene from Venus Senki.

Looking at it from this world's perspective. It seems they made them in response to the enemy's versions. It seems maneuverable ability is important in the environment of warfare to avoid artilliary.

A thing that would be good, if had an aerial view from the world,to a better introduction.I don't care if there's a war happening , but if they are winning, why is hard to get milk and eggs?

And this will be an anime about overthrowing white supremacists?

Why I feel that the juggernaut, is just a Tachikoma without personality?

Comment will be interesting with so many LN elitists here.

Lol that’s the point. Compared to the legion, juggernauts are terrible or mediocre at best. The republic lauds them as some achievement yet shin casually takes off a piece from the frame with his knife. The duality is ironic, and that is intended. Juggernauts are flimsy. They’re not even drones. Just some battle machines that have pilots with the subhuman tags to allow them to call it a drone and feed their ego that they have outdone the enemy by building some advanced drone to fight.

Yet another impossible dystopia.

When you can't think up content, use the food scene as a crutch. Twice. Throw in a kitty for good measure.

Wonder if we'll ever be told why they don't simply kill these kids with non-blue hair and use robots or remote pilots instead.

Either way, a lot of bad ideas clumsily handled.

OK, still pretty desperate move to make her look cool and politically correct early on...which also contradicts with her killing a lot of those guys in her missions. If she is supposed to be so empathic - why not quit military and do something by political means to save them?
Yes, this would mean less action and way more grinding against the machine, loosing privileges and eventually going to jail...

No matter how you slice it, her character here come as nonsensical.

PS

How the Eighty-sixers are handled, why the juggernauts are unmanned, how their food resources are limited, all of these will be explained eventually. In the novels, they were kinda infodumped at the very beginning, but it seems like the anime wants to space out the information and leave it for (hopefully) the next episode.

She didn't try to get them killed in battle. Her tactics were simply not enough against the legion force. The reason why she's a handler is because she wants to command the 86-ers and make them victorious in battle while minimizing the casualties. As for why she chooses this path instead of going for something political has to do more with her upbringing, which will be brought up eventually. It's a bit hard going into details without entering spoiler territory, but in the end, we're not supposed to be sympathizing with Lena at all. If she comes off as unreasonable and/or hypocritical, then that's just a part of the writing itself and not something that was unintentional.

If there's an explanation, then there's an explanation. Whether you're satisfied with the explanation is all up to you. I'm just stating that there's an reason to her character being the way she is. Whether you want to stick around for the explanation is up to you, and whether you are satisfied with the reasoning given is also up to you.

Okay, this is looking better than I expected it to be.

A-1 Pictures' been on a rise especially with the level of quality they've been treating us with and this is another fantastic addition of the collection. Suspenseful use of CGI blended in with gorgeous 2D visuals, this is really good!

It's incredible how the Republic do not even report any casualties or fatalities even though the exact opposite thing is occurring real time. Definitely curious why though, I feel like it's to "lessen the power gap" with the Empire.

Main Characters seems like cool and interesting company in their own ways, definitely excited for this even more than ever before now!

It happened in the first volume in the novel. You can't call it a retcon if the novel was written with the intention of bringing that up.

I'm not sure I understand your problem here. You want her to be a fully fleshed characters from the first episode? There's no other episode aired, there's no meaning to do some "what if". She is exacty what was said, she is a privileged person who think she is doing something right by just mourning for the 86 but does nothing proactive about it, basically she is a hypocrite.

The anime hasn't shown anything about her and her future action yet, how can you even think she is nonsensical?

Bit of a slow start but it was pretty interesting to set things up. I went in blind, mostly due to the mecha aspect.

So it seems there is a "higher" human species slaving other "lower" humans? And apparently Lena is not cool with that. A pretty bold concept to make a story around but can it stay interesting enough for 2 cours?
