I think this show has a rather interesting pacing. It continues to build up the team and each member individually...

And at the same time, I think the episode cooled down somewhat in the actual competition but the energy is still there. Everyone is still keeping up in shape for the future. I'd say that Youhei guy is also someone to keep an eye on.

Even if that guy said so, others still encouraged him to join.

lol @ what most of the members did.

The guy wanted to get money fast so that he doesn't have to run, but lost in mahjong. lol @ others got the people to help out with money by those t-shirts.

Fun in volunteering in running... That reason seems to persuaded that guy who tries to find job to run.

Now everyone's running, even if everyone's reason for running is different. Then the time is shortened.

Reason to run... even that guy wanting to attend the race doesn't know the reason. He is aware that the race is hard but believe that they can make it?

The race next ep.

That went too easy with King. It also got downplayed with his simple ''i have to'' as if society demanded it. It's like backtracking from an issue they could have worked with to flesh out Haiji and King's character better, they really copped out here.

The reasoning itself that it would keep King ''stuck'' in his position if he just focused on living the work life forcefully is a good one though IMO. Haiji was rather rude here but he got the point across that King would liven up a little if just took time off and ran.

Finally, everyone's united in the club when it comes to running. It was a good and calm episode.

Didn't like the King drama much, but the training itself was solid.

Another great episode.
I like how it was just a small interaction, not some over dramatic moment that got King to change his mind. If you have to do something, change you perspective and try to want to do it, which will stop you being a misery about it, a simple and true idea.
Next week is the track meet, looking forward to it.

I think I might be dropping this. It's really hard to watch this and feel satisfied with it because I generally agree with all the arguments against Haiji and think most of what he says is, as King called it, "lip service."

However, it feels like the show itself just totally expects me to be on Haiji's side. I can't do that. As far as I'm aware, there's no reason he needs to force these people to run with him. Yeah, he wants to run the Hakone, but WHY? Why can't he just put together a small team and be happy running again? Why does it have to be the Hakone? Without that answered, Haiji just kind of seems like a jerk to me. And yet the show is painting him as some inspirational leader. Maybe it's just because I'm in my last year of school and totally understand where people like King and Yuki are coming from with wanting to focus on finding a job/enjoying life before becoming an adult. I think Haiji's the selfish one, not them.

Is anyone else struggling with this?

I don't know. Maybe I'll come back to it next season. I like everyone besides Haiji, mostly, and it's sure pretty. Putting it on hold for now.

I think you have to understand this series is based on a novel. It's not going to give you the answers straight away, but it kind of has hinted with smoky mentioning he did track in school. I think all of the ten were scouted for specific reasons, that will slowly be revealed. I honestly do think for some though, this series might be best consumed once its over and can be watched all in one.
Finally Haiji will comes across as different depending on you own personal perspective. I like the guy, but I can see why some might see him as pushy, but given how some people are, sometimes pushy people are needed.

Good episode again.

First of all the soundtrack was absolutely exceptional this episode, Yuki Hayashi's way of composing these inspirational tracks is just incredible. The guy deserves all the praise I give him. xD

Haiji has always been blunt and during the part where he confronts King especially so but I think he made his point about 'Move on and try something' well, sometimes you just gotta get out there and run and see what you find.

Personally, my favorite part of the episode was when Honor-Roll dude who's name eludes me gave his two cents on running to King. You will definitely like something more when you choose to do it over feeling like you're forced to. It's a very simple thing but the notion of choosing something over being forced to comply will get you really far. :)

I loved the part where everyone just grinned as King was trying to come up with excuses to run. XD
The little scene of Kakeru smiling and the twins making fun of him for it was real nice too.

It's interesting to see that Haiji himself is only try to find what running means to him, Kakeru isn't wrong in dinging over the fact that he's making everyone run over it. Maybe's Haiji's goal isn't to actually win Hakone but rather just use running as a medium to help all the other dorm members move on from their stagnation.

I'm glad King is back and it seems like their pace has gotten better too. I wonder will they be alright in the track meet since Prince runs like that? Those t-shirts were really lame for real.

Any way good episode, the story is good show so far and Yuki is my favorite on this series.

That's a pretty cool theory of why Haiji is doing this. And it would explain why he thinks he's doing it "for them". But I do think there's a hidden, selfish motive, even if later it all turns out to be true and everyone's life gets better because of running. I'm really hoping that with 23 episodes the anime can fully flesh out (at least) most of its characters. And with the first race already in the horizon, I don't think we'll have to wait like 15 episodes for the Hakone Ekiden. Maybe it'll come sooner, and this show has more on its sleeves than we thought...
...I gotta stop putting my hopes so high.

Sigh... I think I'm going to have to drop this series or at the very least put it on hold.

I don't know what I'm more frustrated with in this series, the fact that Haiji hasn't told anyone why he wants to run at Hakone so badly or that no one has actually bothered to ask him why. The characters are great and all but I cannot understand how everyone can be so chill about this when Haiji's been asking for the impossible, even going as far as to forcing them to put their lives on hold.

I would have thought by now someone would ask the big question of "Why? What's the purpose of all this?" Especially Kakeru and King, or hell even Prince! Since episode one Kakeru seems like he's going to ask Haiji the big question but every time he does he just clamps up and drops the subject. Why? Same thing with King. When he made that outburst in the last episode I was expecting King to ask Haiji the big question but instead he just walks away. Why? And the rest of the cast is no better, they just stand or sit there blinking their eyes like a bunch of idiots. Seriously, who the hell acts like this? Does no one in this entire cast, especially the more mature ones, feel obligated to know why Haiji is so persistent in this crazy dream of his?

You guys may think I'm over analyzing this but let me explain this do you as an experienced story teller myself. In whatever story you're writing you need to give the audience/readers a reason to care about it early on whether it's the setting, characters, or the story itself. It doesn't have to be the real reason or the biggest just as long as there is one. You can have the most interesting setting, characters, or premise but if the reason to follow it isn't there, then the majority of the audience is not going to be motivated to do so because the first thing going through their minds when they come across a new story is, "What's going here and why should we care?" You can't put it off for too long because it's going to frustrate the audience more and more as the show goes on.

And that's my biggest with this anime so far. We're six episodes in and so far I haven't been given a reason to continue following it. All it's done is beat around the bush. Even the most mediocre stories establish a reason to follow it early on. Whether it turns out to be good or not remains to be seen, but at least it did it's job of establishing an audience that was willing to follow it all the way through.

Overall, this anime isn't bad and I might give it one more episode to see how the tournament turns out but at this point I'm not really motivated to continue watching.

So so so so so so so so good.
I wasn't sure at first, but I've decided: Im loving this anime.
Takashi was so precious in this episode. His smile is so sweet.
I adore Haiji so much.
and Kakeru too
The twins, and Musa, and the rest are growing on me too.
Prince is hella relateable.
The drama with King felt a little too drawn out esp when resolved so easily, but I didn't hate it.
I think all this build up to the race is nice too.
All in all, it was a good episode and I'm excited for the next.

I'm still not that convinced about how King's dilemma was resolved... in the end, Haiji didn't explain his reasons and the problem was resolved by a secondary character. However, I have to say that Sugiyama gained some good points to my eyes and has also become a character of my liking, he's a nice guy too.

So, we'll have the competition in the next episode. I wonder how they will handle it since it's too soon and it's obvious that most of them won't be able to qualify... yet.

P.S.: Watch King running make my back hurts, being honest.

Love this eps, so many great words and advice in this eps. The most meaningful one is from Takashi to King, yeah, it's more fun to choose rather than forced to do something. But, at first I can't blame King because he has his reason to, I think King is just confused, maybe he's thinking that,"If I run what will I get? Is it really worth than getting a job?" or something like that and it's normal. I love to see how passionate this team already, not only running but how they promote their team, that's what I love about sports anime, that passion. And for Prince, please save your energy for running rather than talking, I believe your time record will improve more than 1 minute hahaha...

I just love how this episode starts to shape up into the type of anime that I really love. Notable moments for me when the score kicks in when King joins them for the morning run, my ears just caught that sweet tune in the background.

And when Kakeru smiled, and was noticed by the twins, and how he ran off haha.

So my question is regarding the score, someone posted it was by Yuki Hayashi, but any idea on what is the score name that stars at 16min 32 sec mark? Much appreciated guys

Jesus, this anime sure is testing my patience for the no-drop rule, because with each episode, this anime (especially Haiji) is pissing me off more and more. He's a manipulative, black-mailing, control-obsessed [censored] for the sake of his own egoism and doesn't care whether he screws over the lives of a few more people for it, and the show tries to paint him as the good guy because "Hey look at this, he gets them to run, he can't be such a bad guy, right?". Yeah right, screw this.

King decided to run after being asked nicely! He didn't get manipulated by Haiji. Actually, I think that only the twins were the ones to get manipulated. Everyone joined for their own light-hearted reasons. I am really loving the way it is being done.

The T shirts were embarrassing! Still, I like Ouji's T-shirt. It always has interesting stuff written.

How about Musa getting repeatedly stalked by Haiji until he eventually joined, going so far as to show up right where he works to put pressure on him? Same for Yukihiro. Or how about threatening to evict Prince if he doesn't run?

I know they were threatened to run, but most of them later decided to join of their own free will. Prince, who is still being manipulated, hasn't actually joined yet, and neither has the Kageyama look alike. Also, none of them have suddenly become passionate about running. They are all like "Let's try it". That just feels more natural.

I really find it interesting that Haiji says maybe their is something deeper in running or the potential it has to effect someones life. Its thought provoking to think that any hobby someone is interested in can be practiced to the point of near perfection and what kind of outcome each passion has on that persons life by improving a cherished skill

Glad that King is giving running a chance, well, the benefits are undeniable great.

Loved the episode as a whole and especially the team spirit. And yes the soundtrack was also top.

Next time shit will get a bit real. I'm honestly prepared for the worst, but I hope that they can manage it somehow.

Thank you for this. Everyone I've mentioned this online has said "it's based on a novel, of course it's slower," but, like, I've read novels. Good ones give you some reason to care about your main characters from the start, just like every other mediium. And this has given me literally nothing to make me care for Haiji or his Hakone dream. I was liking Kakeru's story a lot and was kind of intrigued by Nico-chan-senpai and Yuki but everything else was just...kind of there.

The whole team is on the same page now, the local people are supporting them, and their first trial is upon them. Well, of course there are still some doubts here and there; Kakeru's "realism" even came back in the last few minutes of the episode, but he is having fun too, and I liked Haiji's 'reason'. He is still searching for an answer, trying to get something out of this, and we still don't know all about his circumstances so there's a lot to come, but this episode was pretty satisfying. The running gag with Prince's running form is getting stale though, but fortunately his phrases are still pretty funny.

This anime is complex for me to digest.

On the one hand I really enjoy the interactions between the characters when Haiji's not included.
Gives me a really fresh feeling in comparison to other sport anime i've watched.
One example is when Prince told Yuki that they should escape and Yuki's like nah you're too slow, we'll get caught. Small moments like that and little details like having the dog leash tied around his waist. Visually pleasing too.

On the other hand, some parts are too unrealistic in a way that doesn't sit well with me since the scope of this anime is simple and I can't really bring myself dismiss it as 'lol anime logic' and let it fly.
There's no way, in a house with 5+ dudes, that one of them wouldn't have already asked Haiji why the fuck he's doing all this and expect an actual answer and not some bullshit vague one. Or at this point just straight up leave.
Kakeru was close here but what about everyone else?
Even if running "feels good" for some of them and they have no reason to question it further, there's still more characters that have settled for this in such a half-assed way (i.e.: King).

Well there's a lot of episodes left...

The 'this is a double cour so wait' argument doesn't work, people are saying that they can't really fathom how the other boarders are acting at the moment. This won't get resolved with Haiji's motives being revealed later on.

It's a shame cos it's clearly a strong anime, but that's bugging me no end and I'mma drop it at this point. Maybe I'll examine the original plot and come back.

While everyone thinks it's nice that they are finally running together because running is good and all.
Just remember the serious stakes of Hakone Ekiden and let me ask you again if you still think it's a good thing for every characters.

20 universities can participate. 10 of them are qualified thanks for being in the top ten the previous year. 9 more teams are qualified at the Hakone Ekiden Yosenkai, a 20 km race. The 20th team is made up of top runners from universities that did not qualify as one of the 19 participating teams.
Hakone Ekiden is a two-day race. 108 km for the first day and 109.9 km the second day. So about 218 km in total. If someone ends up hurt and forfeit, then the whole team must forfeit. Plus, this event is national and followed by medias.

I think the reason they haven't asked why he wants to do it is, because for a long distance college runner the Hakone Ekiden is the ultimate goal. It's like most sports anime where they aim for nationals, they go for it because that's the aim of every college/high school sports team.

I really loved the fact that a small moment, not something over the top, can change someone's perspective. Great episode!

Umm, so, they're aiming for that Hakone Ekiden race, it's all nice and stuff, but there is something I've been struggling to come to terms with. The thing is, I can easily buy that not just the 2 main guys who are obviously damn good runners, but almost all the other guys on the team also have great potential for running that can be translated into actual ability with some training. All except one - the otaku, Prince. It's plain to see that no amount of practice can make him into a runner good enough to actually compete at Ekiden on such short notice (a few years - yeah, maybe, but they don't have a few years, there's only a few months at most). That alone pretty much kills the team's chances, no? Unless some particularly huge and crazy asspull most shonens will be envious of happens that makes him into a decent runner... but an asspull basically equals ruining the series... so I don't understand what the series wants to show... how to fail?

Whether it turns to be good or not remains to be seen, but at least it did it's job of establishing an audience that was willing to follow it all the through.
.

I was liking Kakeru's story a lot and was kind of intrigued by Nico-chan-senpai and Yuki but everything else was just...kind of there.

all this! I'm still watching the show but I'm slowly running out of patience.

Really illuminating the episode in his answers, in dealing with situations, in untangling difficult questions with simplicity or in making clear what surrounds us and without sweetening the reality. Funny and pleasant characters, the story is never boring, I'm satisfied with everything.

I actually know how King feels because I came to a point in life of searching for a job eagerly because I need to. But I admire Shindo for having his own decisions about running.

I also understand how people might be uncomfortable how Haiji force these guys but I think that he has his reasons and I hope it will be revealed on the next episodes

Ah, that's so nice, King decided to run with them. Haiji is incredibly straight forward with everything, I like his personality.
