THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
Looks like they are really getting suited up to compete, literally. They better get used to those outfits.

The episode had a lot of competitive energy and I think on most parts, it captured the intense mood pretty well. However, the episode focused much more on Riko than the other girls. I do find this episode rather important for Riko as she definitely needs to improve but is able to use her own style in the competition.

Oh wow. Is MyAnimeList finally up and running again? Man, it's been ages.

Anyways, Riko is currently my favourite character in the anime. She is such a good friend who also has another good friend. Figure that out. ^_^

Ep 6 was a nice reprieve from all the negativity in the former episodes. I'm also glad to see they decided to focus on another character for an entire episode. Not to compare haikyuu to this, but a big reason haikyuu is so liked is because of it's vast cast and the focus on every single character. Would be glad if they do the same with hanebado too in the later episodes.

After this episode Riko is definitely my favorite character, I was rooting hard for her, I really wanted her to win, but she fought hard. I also really love Kaoruko, I know Ayano is going to beat her but I can dig the cocky attitude because she pulls it off well.

I think my favorite character in this show may be Nagisa, because she is obsessed and over-the-top but at least she has a bit of self-awareness and realizes when she's taking things too far.

Riko could be a good candidate if they didn't make this "she wants to look fine but she actually hides a huge emotional distress" turn. Her actions and her frustration are more human than a lot of other characters', I'll give her that.

Anyway, not that bad of an episode, just a less excruciating continuity of the same flaws that have been there for the entire show. The writing seems to have a fetish for turning every single action into heavy melodrama.

I would say that manga definitely pays attention to almost every character, but anime already has too many differences from manga.

I don't think they had a choice: Harukana is clearly stronger in terms of fanservice and humor, not to mention yuri-bait, so choosing the manga last arc's serious mood was the right decision, I think.

I think they do and the character arc of Nagisa is a sample. It went heavy and melodramatic, but it didn't wear out and had a payoff, and the character while still emotional and intense has some degree of self-awareness and realization and tries to tone down as soon as she bursts. The whole drama with Ayano and the surrounding characters however, has been... ugh.

Maybe I'm complaining too much about Riko because her drama is far more believable than the previous episodes', but when this show has got so excruciating with that aspect I'm less and less able to tolerate stuff like this, specially when the episode baited me with the idea that Riko had actually taken a refreshingly positive approach to her defeat.

As for Harukana, it's kind of off-topic but its strong points compared to Hanebado! are not just comedy and fanservice. It deals with past trauma and self-confidence issues as well but the characters are supportive and show actual emotional feedback. It's a much more positive approach to the sport theme and I'm liking it a lot more. The only aspect I see Hanebado! winning at is the visual presentation.

@jal90 I wanted to say that it's much easier for them to compete with Harukana in terms of drama than to be distracted by the entertainment part. Or maybe they wanted to make their version of the girl's sports anime more different and unusual compared to it. However, their drama is devoted to different problems, so it's difficult for me to compare them.

From the comments I've read from some manga readers, it seems like the anime is diverging from the manga. For instance, when Ayano went against the blonde girl a couple episodes ago, she was supposed to win but the anime had the blonde girl win. Also, here, Riko was supposed to win but as we saw, she lost.

Idk why they're making these changes and idk if they have a good reason to do so, but learning about that is kind of upsetting, especially if there's no good reason to alter the content like this.
People on MAL refuse to actually enjoy watching anime.

Your taste in anime isn't a personality trait.

MAL is literally just anime Twitter as its own website lol.

This episode really shows how much of a frustrating experience is just watching this anime. Anything that doesn't involve Ayano is fucking excellent. But the moment she shows up, it's an unsalvageable trainwreck. It's like I'm watching an unholy fusion of 2 different concepts of ideas. It just doesn't mix well, the character drama on one hand, and the over-the-top stuff on Ayano's part. Somehow this show has to justify Ayano's existence, but it's just not well-written.

Like, how this episode was so good (everything that involves best girl Nagisa is), up until the last minute, when Ayano's mom and Kaoruko shows up.

Not dropping it yet, because even as it is, it's still a well-produced, entertaining mess.

I guess you have a point, I just don't know why do they need to compete with Harukana and worry about overlapping in a few things. They are both sports anime mainly focused on female characters, it's inevitable.

Anyway, despite how immediate this comparison is, the problems Hanebado! has are their own. Even with this approach and accepting that it's trying to differentiate itself, it could do much better than it's doing. Like for example make the characters that antagonize Ayano less one-note, or reduce the unnecessary aggressivity towards her in the team (one particularly ugly scene happens when Ayano is in an obvious state of emotional distress, then another girl from the team finds her and the first thing she says is that she hated her in the past).

@jal90 Are you saying that anime turned almost all girl's rival into abusive jerks? Yes, there is. As far as I can tell, this is now one of the most common complaints, especially from those who read the original manga.

Of course, the manga had enough of its own sillyness, like Riko teasing Nagisa with a proposal to create a yuri-ish moment for Ayano, but manga's rivals have always been sufficiently developed.

At this rate we might as well just call this show "Treat Ayano Like Shit" cause that's all this show seems to do, force on encounters with several of characters that treat her like so.

Also heard several things in this episode were suppose to be a bit 'different' based on its manga counter part.

I really feel sorry for Ayano from the start of this show up to now. People won't stop mentally & emotionally attacking the poor girl who just wants to play badminton just because she's a pro level. I hope she wins against Kaoruku and smiles at her while rubbing her victory.
It was sad Riko couldn't shake off her nervousness for the first half that she lost the first set easily. But she really gave her opponent a run for her money on the second set. Sad, she couldn't keep it up cause it was a little too late.

The anime is still a bit melodramatic but it's better than the previous episode. Riko is a decent character. Sadly, Ayano's mom returned. 3/5

Was I the only one who cried after Riko's lost? It was so heartbreaking with that fact how much she tried... she tried so hard... I was rooting for her, but after that, it made me wonder, why has to everyone from the team always lose? Like, come on, none of them has won a single match... or am I wrong? However, the points were damn close!
I love badminton, I love this anime and watching it makes me want to play more and more. With the start of the new school year, I'll be working much harder than last year, and I'll make sure to get it into the final matches!
I like the animation very much and can't wait for next episode to come out.
Also, sorry for my English, there will probably be some mistakes in my discussion's message, I'm still a student and English learner, so please have a little bit of understanding:)

Eh I red the current chapters of the manga and watched the anime til the latest episode and if I can say sth without spoilering it is that the anime focus way more on the psychological aspect of our MC which is Ayano. The manga doesnt even grace 1/100 of the stuff that we learn about Ayano and also the relationship between the Captain and Ayano isnt as bad in the manga as it was in the anime at the beginning. In the manga Ayano is a pretty funny character tbh. She is someone pampered and a real airhead because she gets to spoiled by Elena, her grandparents and co. Its pretty funnx to see the differences between Ayano in manga and anime. Also even if manga and anime diverge they still have some of the pretty interesting scenes adapted.

In example:

So even if Manga and Anime diverge, both are still very enjoyable. Also Im sry for ma bad english! :|

Seriously, I hate this motherfucker pink hair with all my heart...

What is the interest of all the characters competing against Ayano to intimidate her and treat her as if she were garbage or had done something wrong?

I don't understand where the hatred of Kauruko and Connie comes from... and I suppose that Ayano's mother does not hate her daughter, but there is a good excuse for having abandoned her, although there is not a single excuse for that abandonment...

This episode was so hard to watch, i feel so bad about Riko :/ She worked really hard and she was so close to winning...
Can't believe her mom came...omgggg, but obviously, she is there to cheer for Connie, can't believe she really came.

If this is singles championship, does it mean we will have also doubles? If that's the case then maybe Riko still has a chance!

Badminton is serious business...

Great, now Riko's family is there to watch her lose. And let me guess...they're going to give her the "You did your best! And you played great!" talk at the end...

Hehehe, the heads following the shuttle cock was funny...

Ayano's getting cocky...

Uchika don't you dare...

So Ayano vs. Kaoruko next? Well I want to see what happens when Kaoruko loses. Will she whine and cry, or will she demand for a rematch? If she asks for the rematch, then she automatically wins best girl.

Like, is it a trend or something that pink haired female characters in anime must always be such a hoes? I don't remember liking a pink haired one, ever. Kaoruko is no exception.

P.S. This anime needs more Nagisa.

Finally the best girl had its time to shine. However, damn, Riko really had a bad luck with the drawing and met the unbeliavable fate against giant player. Ah, my megane girl had a lot of burden. She had a last tournament ever to attend, and i just seen her action on the late 6 episode so far? Its unfair! However, the time must go on. And the result, as expected. Atleast she had a non regretful last match, albeit its not the good one. Her cry, served as my cry too....

Next. Ayano continued to round three. She will see the shit match. Its against my another great girl, the pink haired girl with damn attitude! Great. Even her shit mom comed by too, to talk shit with her daughter. The next episode may served as the best episode on this series. Nice!
