THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
Eh, I had an odd impression of this episode. The gimmick with the mask felt strange (not scary at all imo)

The second half of this episode felt more thrilling compared to the first. Honestly, I think when this show gets serious, it feels more appealing. Never trust a strange man with a mask! A timely save by that nude woman at the end.

wow, i dont think they will adapt Used Record, and there’s a lot of things missing there. they practically cut 1/3 of the manga i think, the explanation is so vague. if they have short on time to adapt, it’s best not to adapt that chapter, what makes it creepy is the backstory, yet it so simple in here.

the second half is very good, keep me curious till the end. basically that places are getting wider and wider it reaches her home, and the lack of privacy is so severe, that a person can even breach your dream and kill you, damn that was creppy.

i have a lot of question almost about everything, but seeing the MC is not dead is fine i guess, her aunt must be a total pervert not feeling anxious living like that.

shit, there are a lot of question to be asked in second half:(

The aunt is not naked, i'm disappointed :p

Looks like there's 2-3 censored scene in this episode, kinda annoying for an horror anime.

Quite few scene censored, as mentioned before me its really annoying...
Also lack of explanation and abrupt endings, horror factor also really low again.

This was an okay episode, but the horror was not good. It just wasn't there and scenes being censored made it bad. The second half had quite an erupted ending.

First one was boring. Meh.

I liked the second one a lot. I had a bit of a deja vu when I saw that because the theme is very similar to a dream I had a while ago.

Hmmm... a lot of interesting ideas, but there was either not enough there or there was too much there...

The first part about the record was interesting, but there just wasn't enough there to really make it stand out...

Then in the second part, the idea of this town with no privacy was surreal and fascinating, but they didn't do enough with that itself, and instead added a bunch of other weird things that just kind of made it feel disjointed, like the dream stuff and Aristotle and the big-headed people with lots of eyeballs...

Meh.

Broken Record made no sense with this adaptation honestly, like at the end you hear the melody out of nowhere, think that MAYBE it's the girls like the singer back then and that's pretty much it. It's cutting out too much!

Awesome, they adapted one of my favorite stories! The second part wasn't as good as it was in the manga and left out some stuff but I thought it was still great.

I liked the aunt more in the manga... she seemed more malicious towards her niece in this episode.

It's tough to adapt horror manga that deal with sound, I think. To create something as haunting as it's implied to be in the words on the page... I think they did okay with that. Could have used more of the backstory to give it the full impact, but the song definitely had a bittersweet feel to it.

So... her aunt was asking her to become an exhibitionist like her?

Ok, Jokes aside, I felt mostly confused during the entire episode, what is a shame because the idea of a town with no privacy at all sounds interesting.

Oh so that was the connection between the Aristotle dream stuff and the town. For some reason a didn't get that. In that case, that makes the story even more interesting.

The first one scared me and threw me for a loop. I think the second one could be explained by her perverted family whispering in her ear, but since I don't really know, the vagueness kinda killed it.

I like the first censored scene, because it actually draws your eye to the death that's happening inside her mind, but since she's not actually going to picture it, it makes sense. As for the other censors, if the scenes don't take place in the girl's mind like the first one, I don't see a reason for them to exist.

A very weird episode, and I didn't quite like it.

Probably the best things in this anime are the OP and the ED. The art is really bad, and most of the stories are ok. It definitely could be better. The first story was just as weird as the second one, I don't know what else to think about them. I wanted to see a proper ending of the second story, and maybe the first one too.

My opinion on this episode seems to be diametrically opposed to the general consensus in that I really liked the first story and didn't really care for the second.

I'd argue that Used Record was more effective in the anime than the manga for one simple reason: sound. Being able to hear the recording added an otherworldly atmosphere to the story that simply wasn't there in the manga version. I also thought that the exposition dump by the jazz bar guy was a bit too much to swallow and think that cutting it down was the correct directive decision to make. I did miss Ogawa's corpse "singing" the song to Nakayama, making her think that she was still alive, but I it's ultimately a pretty minor gripe.

On the other hand The Town Without Streets was possibly an even greater unfocused mess than the original manga. At 70 pages long, there was bound to be some things cut out/be at a faster pace in order for the one shot to fit into 16 minutes. The problem is that none of the ideas really flow well with one another and generally lack a message (except perhaps the lack privacy being commentary on CCTV systems if that was the intent). The censoring was odd to see as well, made me wonder why it's okay to show a character slitting their throat vs disemboweled characters and nudity. Painfully average overall

Gave this a 4.5/5, but it probably deserves a 4/5 if I wasn't being so generous.

i just came here because i noticed a miles davis reference in the "Used Record" part of the episode

it's on the top left, you can barely make out the text "miles davis". the album is called "kind of blue" if you're interested, it's a jazz classic and i recommend you check it out if you're into that type of music

there's also multiple other records which i recognize but can't really figure out what they are. i managed to read "mulligan" in the bottom right corner and it turns out it's a reference to the Gerry Mulligan and Thelonious Monk album, "Mulligan Meets Monk"

The song was so eerie in used record, I think that definitely adds something to the story. It's a shame they took away so much content from the story itself, however.

That second story ended so abruptly, and with seemingly no explanation. I think It actually made me enjoy it more in some aspect. Although, an explanation would have been nice, but I guess it's also nice to have to think about the meaning rather than have it spoon fed to me.

The second one felt like it was missing a lot. Her family members are perverts, the guy liked her was a pervert that snuck into her room to whisper shit into her ear, her aunt likes to walk around naked (in the manga). LOL poor girl.

Didn't expect it, but appearently Junji Ito did dive into some artsier territory at some point. Second story was fascinating, but slapping together the Aristotle method and the privacy stuff, just felt like slapping together 2 different stories for the sake of some sort of climax, that the privacy-part of the story would otherwise lack.

Bibimbapski said:

That would definetly improve the first segment in my opinion. Sometimes it's better to not explain things, other times it's like this episode. The idea of a record, that makes people obsessed and willing to kill eachother over it, is not that scary of a horror story, cause we are subjected to different forms of gore way too often, meanwhile the backstory seems to have some urban legend potential, especially if the recording can come off as somewhat authentic or uncanny (unfortunately, that wasn''t the case).

After reading the manga version of Used Record I was exited to hear how the anime would make the song sound and I think they did a pretty good job in making it hauntingly beautiful

Both of the stories that were adapted for this episode were kind of interesting in their own way. I'm really glad that I've read them before, so I could understand them better.

In my opinion, I loved the first story because it made me feel uneasy while I was reading the manga and also made me feel curious of how the song would sound like in the anime version. It didn't disappoint, but it was a shame that they didn't tell (completely) the story of Paula Bell.

Regarding the second story... it was interesting, but no more than that, at least for me.

Ehhh I watched that video recently and just to clarify... that scale is refered to the manga (not anime) version of Ito's works and the use of his "curious" narrative structure. Not to mention that the first part of the episode is not fully complete. And to be honest, I think that narrative works better on paper than in a tv show.

I love the second story! At least the creativity and originality of it. I will admit that the series so far hasn't been perfectly executed and is 'inferior' to the manga. I am not talking about the endings, the endings are in-line with the Baccano narrative style, so-far there has been no happy ending.. Unless we talk about my man Souichi with his funny shenanigans going through an edgy eighth grade syndrome phase.

By far the creepiest, although it's metaphor-laden, it is by far the most real and terrifying story!

I liked the episode even though things were cut. The first story still worked and showed how obsessive people can get when they're exposed to the cursed recorded.

I really enjoyed the second one. The idea of having no privacy and wearing a mask in order to conceal your identity, even though everyone can still see you, or becoming an exhibitionist since people are watching reminded me of the internet. I did laugh quite a bit when she was with her family at breakfast. The way her father and brother just tried to act cool, even though they were super creeps was hilarious to me.

Even though they didn't show the dream guy being creepy, I thought the episode implied he was a bit of a pervert since the ring box was there and it was mentioned that he was using the Aristotle method on her.
