Welcome to the Ballroom is one of the season’s biggest disappointments, for one major reason… They don’t animate the dance scenes! Yes, there are a few horrifying shots of giraffe-necked, colt-limbed humanoids in dramatic positions, a few seconds of footwork here and there, but Welcome to the Ballroom must be saving its budget for some extraordinary finale, because neither of the two spots where I would expect incredible dance animation have delivered (the video our lead watches that convinces him to join the dance studio, and his first dance at an event). Talk about this being no Yuri on Ice. On top of that, I don’t like the characters. Our protagonist is good-natured and dumb and, frankly, bland. His whole “I need direction” schtick bores me. There doesn’t really feel like there’s much force of personality or interest behind it; his obsessive turn into dance, especially in the hands of a teacher as incompetent as Sengoku, is hard to take seriously. Sengoku, by the way, sucks. He shouldn’t be running a dance studio considering the resentment he shows his student and his lack of interest in actually teaching him. The pretty girl remains nothing but a prize for our protagonist to win: his reward for being good enough is getting to dance with her, and she obediently coos and gasps over his growth and skills. Like it or not, Welcome to the Ballroom was heavily hyped pre-season, so a lot of folks are talking about it. But I think it’s weak as a sports show and as a show about dance, and early comparisons to Yuri on Ice only hurt it. I can’t get over the body horror-esque aspects of the dance scenes, either. Who put all these Gumby people in an anime? It’s a no for me. Why do people overrate this? |

If you think it's bad based only on animation then idk what to say. You don't need fluid animation to get a point across so still shots work for even a dancing show. |

I do not watch it and yet I already know better than you. While you have a (big) point with the lack of dance animation, I don't understand the comparison with Yuri on Ice in the first place. From this series should have been expected the usual of hobby/sport/fighting nekketsu series. Nothing more, nothing less. I actually thought it was so strongly awaited because it is the last new adaptation of a manga of this genre. I am pretty sure that what you call "sucks" actuallly spells "is standard". romagia said: lol this anime is about ball room... Is there some wordplay at work here? Did you really had to make a thread about your opinion? On topic, yeah I'm not feeling it either. As much as i love the manga, I'm disappointed with the anime adaptation. When the dance in manga is more intense than in animation form and music, there must be something wrong, right? The characters seem bland in the anime which was not the case in the manga for me. I adore manga tatara but can't stand anime tatara. His VA is mediocre! Never liked shizuku so yeah she sucks either way! Chinatsu (and mako) is way better. I'll watch it though cuz I want to see my favorite moments animated and of course my girl chinatsu! Edit: How can I forget the giraffe necks! There are no giraffe necks in the manga! I also hate how they look like characters straight out of haikyu and their disproportionate limbs. Why can't they just follow the manga designs? |

Being real this just comes off as hard to really take it though you can do better by making these types of questions at least imo. Tbh if you don't like it then you might as well drop it honestly. That's how things go really. |

You see, when I make these treads I try talking about a problem with the show. Not just making, “This show sucks and here’s why.” Why? Because that isn’t really helpful and pretty much pointless. Now getting onto the points you made about the show as someone who is currently watching/enjoying this show. “They don’t animate the dance scenes” Uh…they actually do? Are you watching the show? I also don’t get the Yuri on Ice comparison, since skating is very different from dancing on a ballroom floor. Also, Yuri on Ice has a lot of recycled animation and static stills. I wouldn’t bring that show up as an example good animation. “Tatara is dumb.” Uh…he isn’t. He just has lack of self-confidence for not direction before finding that studio. He hasn’t asked for direction as he is learning by watching others. I don’t see how this is bland as he has a lot of depth to his character. Sengoku is actually a very good teacher. He really knows what is best for his students. He is just passive and aggressive. He doesn’t want to tell this or that. I like how he isn’t hands on, but more hands off but is barking them in a sarcastic manner. I also don’t see how the girl is just a prize as she seems to have her own issues going on. They haven’t explored her yet, but she is deeper than it seems. “Welcome to the Ballroom is overrated!” That’s fine if you think so. I think it’s a great show, but not an amazing one. It does a good job establish its, plot and characters and really crafting the events around them. The characters feel real, instead of anime stereotypes. Feels like I am watching real people grow as dancers and not a bunch of DBZ wannabes yell at each other. |
I haven't updated in years but now I have changed that. I'll be free soon. |

As a former dancer I have to agree with a statement that this anime is highly lowbrow. As I danced for 4 years, I reckon I am "qualified enough" to have a say on how this sport looks like in reality which this anime fails at reflecting, and I honestly did my best not to laugh hard during the first episode already where Fujita through the WHOLE NIGHT practiced the box move... And after less than a month of practice he danced on the stage with Shizuku without even touching her hand ever before in addition to learning the entire choreography just from simple OBSERVATION... No one who has ever danced will buy this utter bullshit. Pardon my rather vulgar language. Currently, I am forcing myself to watch this series as, in my opinion, around 70% of everything that is depicted in it is so cringy that watching one episode takes me 40 minutes. I do not know what they intend to surprise us with in these 24 episodes, because for me already everything was pretty much screwed up after the third one... or even first one. I am also dumbstruck with how little dance there is in this... dance anime. I mean specifically dance animations and a fact that if you wanted to compact all footstep animations, you would obtain no more than a minute of sole dance per episode which for me is just unforgivable, while the rest consists of close-ups on the faces and "frozen" dance poses which aim at "creating the moment of drama"... How cheap and disappointing taking into account I expected to watch an anime with enthralling story and dance with deep emotions... Well, all in all I got "emotions", but not quite the ones of sort I was expecting. What's more, it pisses me all the time that literally every character goes on about how a guy is "the one who leads a woman" through which you can immediately see this anime wasn't made by professionals who have knowledge on the subject, but rather some amateur who hardly knows anything or have experience with ballroom dancing. In professional dance, it is not just a guy who leads a girl, but rather both a guy and a girl dance their own parts - the thing is, they are to do it in harmony, in a sychronised way, creating a whole. If one of the partners suddenly changed the agreed steps, the whole choreography'd be destroyed, because it's just not possible to guess in time what step your partner suddenly made a decision to make. Having said that, Fujita who is constantly changing his footstep pattern and obedientlyy "followed" by Shizuku/Mako with a look of surprise on her face ("Oh, but why is he changing steps?" <-- me: JUST HOW DID YOU KNOW WHAT HE WANTED TO DANCE AND HOW THE BLOODY HELL DO YOU MANAGE TO DANCE EXACTLY THE SAME THING WITHOUT ANY DOUBT OR HESITATION???) seems to me just so far from reality and unreal, that in my eyes he looks simply grotesque. I apologise for my bad English for it is not my first language. |

I apologise for my bad English for it is not my first language. Are you actually expecting anything realistic from a sports anime? C'mon, just go watch every sports anime out there and tell me if any of them is realistic! Actually, don't bother, I'll tell you, not a single one is! The point of getting an unrealistically good guy that manages to be awesome at dancing from the beginning is to make it exciting. Expecting Ballroom E Youkoso to reflect the reality is the same as asking Haikyuu, or worse, Prince of Tennis, to reflect reality. I don't know if you've watched these but let me tell you, to manipulate gravity so that a ball comes directly to you and so you don't have to move while playing tennis is quite impossible in the real world. I think the main reason you aren't enjoying it is because instead of watching as a person looking for an enjoyable anime to watch and being open to the good and the bad anime has to offer, you're watching it as a dancer who's judging the production based on your own reality of what dancing is. You're taking it too seriously. I mean if I read Piano no Mori as a musician expecting it to be realistic I would also probably not like it, genius guy who can play amazingly well in a piano learning by himself simply from listening once to a song... Not the most realistic scenario now, is it? |

Yes, I actually did. That's why I'm disappointed and can't enjoy watching this series it if depicts things that are just unreal. This is not the fantasy genre where, well, unrealistic things are expected to happen. When I start watching something that has a story set up in a real world and is about a real life (like sport) and am given the plot like that one from Ballroom e Youkoso, I just feel like I'm being lied to, because this is nothing like this sport is like. If other people enjoy watching series which aim at bringing them closer to some topic but instead of a real thing they get something that is just full of lies and they don't even realise it is due to simple lack of enough knowledge, then it's fine, but as a person who is able to see through those lies - I don't... I think the show is okay albeit the lack of solid dance animation. The story development and characters are both likeable. I just dislike the standstill animations (usually focused at the character's face) whenever they perform an important routine or a cue step. Is the budget that low to even properly render a nice 1 minute performance dance? >.< |

Nevertheless, I will keep watching it just because I love dancing. I've never watched Haikyuu or Prince of Tennis. Uhhhh, it's a bloody shounen anime. None of these are ever "realistic" in the level of depth you are expecting. If you want that, drop the show right now and go watch an actual recording of a World DanceSport Competition. Simone Segatori and Annette Sudol have plenty of videos to fawn over. Of course no one IRL is going to start training to dance with no prior experience and be trashing competitions a month later with a partner he's barely practiced with; however, the alternative makes for a boring damn show. Of course MC is gonna learn figures from simple observation. Of course MC can change moves on the fly and be such a boss Lead that any Follow can keep up. He's the MC, he's gonna plot armour steamroll his way through the competition, and that's what makes these fun to watch, to see the underdog claim victory. The men/women that create this show surely did research into dance. It's evidenced by a lot of concepts they bring up in the show actually being important to ballroom/latin dancing, but they also obviously aren't experts at dancing, as you say; they are animators and directors. They make anime. The fact that you can watch characters in the show properly go heel/toe and have the rise and fall of a proper Waltz is an impressive level of detail from people that don't actually dance as a hobby or for a living. If you actually dance, I imagine you noticed that much. So instead of expecting lifelike accuracy from a shounen, appreciate the little details they do slip in that elevate the material beyond random bullshit. Notice they talk about proper frame and the dynamics of a fluid pairing. Enjoy these Easter eggs for dancers. Also understand it is still artistic interpretation and things will be stretched (including the character models, hah!) to make the story itself more interesting and lively, but still enjoy the tidbits of information provided that relate to the hobby that you, and I for that matter, enjoy. Stay positive buddy, no need to get that upset over a show, enjoy it! The show hasn't even finished its routine and stepped up to the kiss and cry area yet, let it manage that much before you decide to start hating it ;) |

Is the budget that low to even properly render a nice 1 minute performance dance? >.< I doubt it's a budget thing. A lot of judges in real competitions literally will mark you for having a big-ass smile on your face so that they know you're having fun and not out of your mind focused to death on your steps, meaning you know your steps and aren't frantically trying to remember them. It is considered fairly important and is the one consistent thing I've heard from coaches/instructors during my minimal time dancing ballroom/latin. Likewise dancers often will take huge exaggerated pauses in front of judges for you to admire their form, their poise, their synergy, etc. I think the still-frame shots of the dancers in the show are meant to emphasize those moments because of how important they are. Conversely, trying to demonstrate good musicality to the viewer is far more subtle because most viewers aren't going to sit there counting beats and watching if they match footsteps, so spending a lot of animation time to show that probably isn't worth it. They are trying to demonstrate things the viewer will notice through showing, rather than telling. It's not like the show is devoid of slick animation at times, this is just a stylistic choice. This very episode we had a well animated scene there of Mako "blooming", reminiscent of the Hyodo at-home practice scene several eps ago. Also, if you pay close attention to the bits of animation of footwork, you can see them moving heel/toe and sliding their toes as well, which is an important footwork concept to the Waltz, so they are definitely animating things they think are important. |

I can play a difficult song in my main instrument, the cello, (after years of playing, it's quite normal), or the main melody of a difficult song like from bethoven in piano, but playing the entire song with all the parts just from listening once, I doubt it's doable for a self-taught kid without access to internet or anywhere you can learn something about piano. |

Don't go to any anime expecting it to be like reality, you may find some with more realistic characters and such, but even if they're set in a world like ours most of them are completely unrealistic and exaggerated. In sports animes, as this one, for it to be exciting the characters have to be insanely good and do things you can't do in real life. Or they need to get really good in a unrealistic short amount of time. Don't expect anime to reflect real life, don't expect a baseball anime to be like real life basebal. We don't watch anime to get a sense of what reality is, for that we watch real life sports. The anime world is very stereotipical so please don't mistake it as a reality and don't use it as a base for the real world, because it isn't. |

HaXXspetten said: Well I dropped it after episode 2 but not really for those reasons.. Same, personally I found it incredibly boring the first 4 eps and the characters quite bland. You might say that obviously there can't be much characterization in such a short time but what I mean is that none of them actually caught my interest. I am quite baffled by the praise it's getting but I can't say it's absolute shit or anything. It's just dull to me. MaryHelen said: That's the thing about anime: it's fictional. Don't go to any anime expecting it to be like reality From any piece of fiction, let it be a movie, a book, a play, etc. I expect some level. Anime isn't any different. I don't know, maybe it's just me, but in my opinion an anime that has factual errors can't be a good anime. |

Since I'm reading the manga, I started watching the anime mostly because of dance scenes... but I have to say I'm really disappointed, I've watched 11 episodes and I didn't see even one full dance, only some 'pictures' without any movements and some steps, nothing else. I'm not saying it's bad, I really like the manga, but I expected something else. And seriously, people, you should learn to accept other people's opinions. The fact that you like something doesn't mean that everyone have to like it too. |

It's very sad that you are all arguing that BeY has poor animation when you don't even know what that is. Perhaps the art style is outlandish and unusual but that certainly doesn't make it bad, as it |

People still don't understand how tightly packed the TV schedules are for anime. Ballroom is actually decent in that regard - hello, the flower scene? As always, they'll add extra detail and animation on the BR discs. |

your only good point is the lack of dance animation |

I wouldn't say that it sucks, but the lack of dance animation is irritatingly obvious. If I wanted to look at still shots I would read the manga. |

I do agree with you on the "pretty girl remains a prize" part. At certain times I was amazed at the objectification. |

I love the manga, but do feel underwhelmed by the anime when it comes to showcasing the dances themselves in this rewatch. Everything feels the same, especially since a lot of the time, they just use generic music for the performances instead of music actually relevant to the themes of the dances themselves. Sometimes they do try with the music, but the laziness is still there since that's such a major detail that needs to be on point all the time. And yeah, the dances are just 2 seconds of motion and then an epic pose, it doesn't do real justice to the dances themselves with the lack of vision and choreography. Because of this, the commentary on the dancing, the scoring and deciding on who is a worthy winner, all that feels pre-decided and I can't witness how it's great myself. I can allow it for a manga since that's stills, but with an anime and especially with a major studio like Production IG, you got to have more vision and put more effort than that. It's a great manga, but from an adaptation perspective for the anime, it's severely underwhelming compared to what it can be. Sure, it's more consistent than other shows since it doesn't heavily throw in CG unlike a lot of other shows, but they play it way too safe for its own good without the anime really being better than the manga in any way. |
