They're disposing of the doggies with ease, they really seem to have developed as a team. Ranta was right though, from a tactical standpoint, killing the sleeping doggies would have been the smart choice, they have to fight them eventually, also walking by and just leaving them leaves their flank open, potentially trapping them if they need to escape. Ranta is like a male tsundere, looking forward to seeing why he's so messed up, he was probably bullied and then created his personality to shield himself. Almost killing Haru was a bit uncalled for. Hopefully Haru stops comparing himself to Manato, he's his own person and he needs to do what he thinks is right, otherwise he will never step out from under Manato's shadow.

Prediction: Someone will get hurt, Ranta will feel guilty, Ranta will repent.

These doggies don't seem to have a very keen sense of smell or hearing.

At last they progressed to kobolds. And already against Death spots.
Don't really like Ranta's behavior, but it's how his character is and pretty sure that he's saying right things. And considering the title of the episode i thought that there would be the scene for Haruhiro questioning about him being a leader.

The mine's visual delivered, it's exactly what I was thinking when I was reading its description.

Still, their introduction to the mines could have been a bit better, doesn't really give the feelings they are fighting new monsters and have to adapt to them all over again, getting a bit rushed.

Haruhiro and Ranta's conversation was handled and pushed well, I guess I was a bit too worried, it really didn't need as much buildup as in the novels.

Going forward... hm, we'll just have to see, Ranta's "arc" here will probably happen in the second half of the next episode, I think using a cliffhanger for it would actually be a good idea (as in, fill up this episode a bit more and have the encounter at the end of this episode happen in the middle of the next episode) but it'd need an extra episode to pace that well.
Bit rushed now, another episode would have been really nice.

My thoughts exactly. When I was reading the LN, I pictured every adapted scene to look exactly like this in the mine (minus the pigworms I had no idea what they would look like, but was waiting to see them all episode. The way they described them in the LN, I thought they'd be more wormy/caterpillaresque). The mines looked exactly like how I pictured when reading the LN which is cool how well they translated a viewers imagination from the LN details to their visual representations. I also felt it was a bit rushed especially with the Death Patch part already, but what can you do, its only 12 episodes and we're like kind of towards the end of Vol. 2, but not quite maybe 1/2-2/3rds through it.

Overall good episode, 4.5/5. I want to see more pigworm lovin' action next episode though :D!

Also on Ranta: He always seems to piss me off in the anime and in the LN. He still bugs me after all this time getting used to his character, I don't think I will ever like him,

Oh, and I feel like I'm in the minority it comes to Haruho, but I hate him too. He just seems dickish and entitled at times. Everyone ALWAYS has this hive mind mentality when it comes to Haru, except for Ranta. If Haru suggests or is against it then everyone will pretty much follow his opinion, its like they have no minds of their own. Even if Ranta has a solid idea, they will just agree with Haru for the sake of not liking Ranta. I find that rather annoying and think it makes Haru a shitty character. I feel like he knows he can willingly manipulate his teams decisions with his own intentions in mind and hide it behind some bullshit idea or moral or even make it sound like its for the team or even their own idea.

Ranta's a dick, but he's literally the only character that's slightly interesting. The rest are just plain boring and/or annoying. He's definitely not the type of person I'd hang around with in real life, but from an anime I expect entertainment and he's the only one in the cast of characters that provides that.
5 main aspects I base my ratings on:
1. Did DramaEnthusiast make a thread about it?
2. Is it better than Breaking Bad?
3. Did MellowJello recommend the shit out of it?
4. Has it caused a (very entertaining) shitstorm on MAL?
5. Is it actually good?

Scratch the fifth point, it's not very relevant...

I don't get the hate that Haruhiro's getting. He never wanted to be the leader and he doesn't have the qualities for it, but hen Manato died, Haru was the only one to step into the role because the others never wanted to. He's trying to look out for the best interest of the group, so he's got to question Ranta's action, at least so he can understand him. Hes' always trying to get the group's input, but they're just a bunch of thumb twiddling noobs.

Ranta's a dick and wouldn't last without a party so him being abrasive to his own party is stupid. He shouldn't blame them for reacting to him the way they do because he brings it on himself. It's his defense mechanism, but it can be grating. In the LN, his rants and arguments can really be meaningless and just fill in the space for the chapters.

I don't hate Haruhiro because I think he's a bad leader he sucks because he is bland and has no personality. All he ever does is talk about Manato and bitch about not being qualified for his leader position but we have yet to see him mess up as leader so his bitching is uncalled for.

Ranta on the other hand is a decent character because we know his motives for fighting we are shown that he has a hobby, unlike Haruhiro who just dicks around on their day off, and that he has an internal struggle. These are all the basic building blocks of a good character.

Ranta is one of the most misunderstood characters in this series. He doesn't deserve hate, only pity.

Ranta is pretty realistic
Ranta is a pretty accurate depiction of some MMO players I've met before. Generally, they are insecure, somewhat immature and socially inept, and are aware of that fact. Because of this they tend to go for classes which are seen as flashily powerful in order to bolster their popularity and social acceptance.

Many of them tend to be loners in real life, and the majority are guys (girls tend to be more social and to form cliques).

Why Ranta is being an ass
Ranta-like players frequently cultivate a "don't care"-ish and "loner" attitude. This is actually an act- they actually care very deeply about how others perceive them due to personal insecurities. They fear being emotionally close in a party as it makes them vulnerable to the pain of rejection; particularly since given their behaviour it is likely that they have a history of being accepted into, and later rejected because of their ironically self-defeating attitude. The "loner" act is also a sop to their pride; their reasoning is that they are not "rejected" by their party, they are intentionally choosing to stay apart from it.

Why Ranta is so rude
Mainly because he is socially inept. Since he's a loner most of the time, he probably hasn't picked up social skills like holding a conversation, effective communication and avoiding social mistakes. He doesn't mean to be rude, but when caught out he tries to hide it by pretending that he was "just being honest" or was "telling it the way it is" rather than admit that he was wrong, and make himself vulnerable.

The cult of Superman
Because Ranta is in reality insecure and emotionally sensitive, he aspires to get rid of these flaws by becoming someone who is immune to pain, especially emotional pain, immune to fear, immune to feelings. Of course, he isn't- he can't be. But he will try his hardest to not to show weakness or vulnerability by hiding it. That is why Ranta pretends that he doesn't care, pretends that he is not afraid, pretends that he is strong. He is so afraid of being found out that he will criticize and put down others for showing that they care or are afraid. That's why Ranta is so dismissive about being friends with party members, openly rude about crying over Manato and so eager to charge into Cyrene Mines.

Incidentally, you can find many people of this type on LOL chat. Some people are so afraid of being called bad that they will call out others before that happens.

Ranta is brave (in his own way)
Have you noticed how often and how loudly Ranta talks about how he is not afraid? How often he refuses the help of others with the talk about "his" prey? How often he brags about his contributions to the kill? The secret is- really unafraid people don't talk about it. They just go in and get the job done.

Ranta is afraid. But, given his insecurities, he is terrified of being seen as not pulling his own weight in the party, of being found out as being useless. In Ranta's mind, his only value to the party is because he kills mobs. If he doesn't kill mobs, if he needs help to kill mobs, the party might kick him out! That's why when he was talking to Haruhiro, he said he was "fulfilling his duties tot he party".

Can Ranta be saved?
Yes, there is still hope. Ranta actually backed off about Mary, so he's not stupid enough to cross his own healer. Plus he seems to care about the party, despite what his mouth says. It's worth a shot, although it won't be easy- especially since this type of persons tend to be very loyal to what they believe in.

I think Ranta's conflict with the group doesn't make him less annoying than the others - imagine what the show would be like if it were Haru, Mary and Yume in his harem and Moguzo, Shihoru and Ranta being obedient. The conflict with with Ranta is really the only thing driving the rest of them forward. Coincidence? I think he also has much more depth than Haruhiro - he has hobbies, isn't afraid to confront Haru, forthright and straight forward, he's the only one who's moved on from Manato's death and he has some internal conflict which is deeper than "I must constantly compare myself to the hallucinatory memory of our old, dead leader". He's really he only character who's fleshed out apart from Haru and Mary.

How does Haruhiro not have personality? Just because he's not in your face or brash like Ranta, doesn't mean he lacks personality. He's the one who actually takes the time to get to know people despite having little social skills. Without him, Mary would've probably left the group already. It may be bland to some people, but keeps a group together. Also not only is he their leader, he's also their battle tactician, so he needs to know where to tell each party to member to be in order for them to survive. If they fail or someone dies, it'd be on him, so yeah seems like being a leader is pretty difficult. His bitching is justified, imo. And it doesn't help that one of his party member is doing their own thing.

I don't think Ranta is realistic at all and neither are most of the characters on this show. Focusing on Ranta, his characteristics are pretty much the misunderstood loner type who wants the attention and appreciation from others, but continues to act like a dick to them despite all they've been through. Where's the growth in that? His character trope has been used in many animes and stories. It's nothing new. He'll have an episode where he redeems himself and everyone will love him for it. Seen it all before. To me, he would be the first character to recognize that he needs the other people to survive so it'd be good for him to change how treats them.

I mean if we want to talk about realism, then we should talk about how traumatic of an experience this would be. You have a bunch of teenagers dropped into a foreign world where they are put into a life and death situation, having to prey on other sentient creatures for money to live. Looking out for your survival would be the first thing on your mind instead of focusing on how cool you look and how others perceive you, but this isn't a realistic take on an MMO anime, which means focusing on petty things like that are fine and dandy as long as it's interesting to the story.

Like damn, didn't Manato leave a diary behind? Haruhiro, read your boyfriend's diary already and gain some self-esteem!

Despite how frustrating he can be, Ranta had some good points during his talk with Haruhiro. If only Haru had said his true thoughts out loud, maybe the two would have connected better.

Honestly that was the first thing that came to mind when I saw those things, haha.

As for Ranta, I think everyone else here has already said things that I thought after this episode. That he's an unlikable person, but he's also necessary to the team in some ways. He doesn't have to change too much, but I'd like if he receives some character growth. I think it was good that Haruhiro initiated that conversation, and while that didn't turn out that well, it was needed. It could've gone better I think if Haruhiro opened up to Ranta, but he was defensive so of course Ranta was just done with the talk.

Don't know why, but I didn't quite enjoy this episode like any other episodes before. Which is kind of wierd considering how they decided to finally step their game up and fight kobolds instead of goblins.

Is this a Ranta focused arc?? or are they foreshadowing a death flag here... hmm...

If Haruhiro strives to get to know his entire team why does he know so little about everyone? Does he know that Yume likes to rock climb in her spare time? Probably not since the only conversations they ever have are either to cry or to flirt even though they have zero chemistry. Did he know that Ranta likes fishing? No, he had to ask Moguzo about it. Did he know Manato frequently went to the pub in town late at night? No, he was surprised when he discovered that. Oh but of course he knew that Shihoru was too nervous around people to really socialize with them right? No he did not. But all of this is irrelevant since these aren't the reasons that Haruhiro is bland and boring.

Haruhiro is just like every light novel protagonist, he gets all the girls for no apparent reason and yet he can never bring himself to be happy he just sulks around and complains about not being as perfect as Manato was. He has no querks or rough edges that would make him interesting and also has no hobbies which would make him feel real. Him being generic isn't a problem though, I am a firm believer that even the worst clichés can be great if done well the problem is Haruhiro isn't inteResting at all. I would have loved to see how Haruhiro decided to become leader of how he went from introverted to taking charge as leader but we didn't, all we see is Manato die then all of a dissent Harhiro is the leader. Plus considering he's supposedly super observant you would think he'd understand Ranta's fighting style but whatever I guess I can't expect him to do the one thing he is supposed to be good at.

What makes Ranta so much better is the fact we, for the most part, we see him go through stages of development. In episode 1 we learn that he wants to become a total badass and slay a bunch of monsters but when he finally accomplishes this in episode 2 it terrifies him. The fact that the show decided to give us scenery shots for eight god damn minutes instead of seeing what Ranta went through pissed me off but it didn't completely destroy the scene for me. He had a moment of levity that no other character in this anime has had yet.

I will clarify one thing now though, I by no means think Ranta is a good character in the grand scale of anime characters. He's no Shinji Ikari (who is a great character from a great anime called Neon Genesis Evangelion which I think everyone should watch) but he is a mediocre character with a somewhat well defined struggle, both internal and external, and some specs of realistic traits. In a show this void of even decent characters though he is a shining beacon of hope much like Asuna was a beacon in that shit fest SAO. When you surround a decent character with terrible ones and an even worst story that decent character looks a whole lot better by comparison.

sooo a ranta based episode literally, with awesome action
they finally didn't just insert song and wasted 5 minutes of the episode, FINALLY!
this episode was actually quite dark and eerie, tbh.
with all the ranta build-up, ya'll think he's gonna die but i don't think he's gonna die but rather someone else is gonna die
>called it b4 it happens hopefully it does cause i've always been wrong

Ranta in that first scene. What the hell.
Rants, just stop being a dick, OK?

Oh god. I was lgitimately scared for them this entire episode and now I am super scared for them and what might happen in the next episode. Please don't kill someone else :0

Was actually expecting Renji to appear since they showed him. Oh well, hopefully soon.

For now Ranta looks like the most useless character though. He can't even master his skills properly and just relies on going full aggro to finish his prey. I understand if he's actually decent like Moguzo who can handle himself on one on ones, but the truth is he barely can and he is too reckless. I can see him being a burden if he doesn't improve or at least change his attitude.

Pretty good episode, Finally a new monster for a change.

The new skills were pretty cool but they still seem pretty basic MMO wise xD

The Haru x Yume scenes were nice :P

Ranta is one of the most misunderstood characters in this series.

^This right here

Everyone seems to have an issue with Ranta, Personally I don't dislike him.
His retorts are pretty funny at times and honestly his impertinence often adds some flavor to the group. He's always ready to face a new challenge or take things head on, You might call him reckless but if anything he does possess courage.

He may not be a great friend let alone a team player and of course there is room for him to fit better into the party but isn't him learning and understanding how he can accomplish those tasks what defines his development. In my opinion he doesn't deserve all the hate he gets.

I'd rather see Haruhiro stop mentioning Manato each episode XD, He should try to find his own style of leadership than attempt to consider what Manato would do. After all he isn't Manato.

That Mary panic, Hope she overcomes her trauma.
Death Spots is huge :O, The thing probably sniffed them out already.

God damn those pigs were fugly as heck.....

Yet another nicely executed episode. I loved how they managed to level up on their prey types now, what with the furry Kobolds. I found it quite interesting how they managed to run through the first two levels so quickly, but I guess it's probably due to the additional new skills that they acquired beforehand.

Haru really has his work cut out for him. Not only is he struggling to coordinate the team on the field, he also has to try patching things up between his members away from the battles. To be perfectly honest, I feel like he's still not doing that good of a job of it. Ranta may be a problem child, but I feel like Haru focuses too much on him and neglects the rest of the cast a bit. Him watching Mogzo cooking early in the morning seemed to me a prime example. He really needs to stop keeping things to himself and try airing out his thoughts for everyone.

Ranta has his own thoughts, and is trying to deal with things in his own way. I respect him as a character, but I have to agree that he thinks too highly of his own skills and tends to do things a bit half-assed. No one was complaining when Manato was playing tank, because he tried to be careful, thought things through, and tried to include everyone in on his plans. Ranta tends to over-extend his area of influence and because of it causes others in his squad to have to jump out of his way, when in reality they should all be looking out for one another. The way he wastes his own energy is also poor judgement (as Mary's past history has shown) and could affect the team negatively.
I get the feeling that Ranta's attitude and impulsiveness will one day lead to either him getting himself into some bad situation, or worse leading his friends/teammates into something of a bind which may prove fatal.

Loved the Mary moments, and how she seems to have opened up to Haru, though her reaction with the Death Spot was pretty intense. Glad to see that she actually smiled for once. Haru's other moment with Yume was so chill, I just wish Shihoru would get some more screen time.

Oh yeah... did I mention how fugly those pigs were? :P

Honestly it's been old since episode 5. I don't know why everyone thinks Ranta is so unbearably annoying when we got Haruhiro bitching about the same shit every episode.

I mean... If you want anime about emotionless characters, with surreal mental and physical strength, drop this one, it's not for you. Bleach awaits :P

Yeah, it was subpar, the backgrounds were quite off too.
