^ Thought a clip from S1 would help.

And from the Itsuwari no Kamen VN PV (Pretty awesome.)

And the OP of S1. From what I read, most of the characters will make an appearance in Itsuwari no Kamen including the guys.

If this story follows the prequel then expect lots of bloodshed.

There is no such thing as an obligatory onsen episode in Itsuwari no Kamen. Which is good.

So... how old are they now? I'm guessing Kuon is about 18-22? She's way too big to be a 9-year-old. And I'm not too sure about the time lapse between the series but it seems to be small as Touka and Karura still seem young as ever.

Its around 10-20 years since end of first show.

Considering Yamato has an emperor who ruled for centuries, Its fair to say that those people have a way longer lifespan.

That's not true, they showed that they both consumed an incredible amount of sake, and that Haku withstood pretty well, but Karura is invincible.

Considering that this IS Utawarerumono, Eruru having passed away would be in the realms of possibilities. However, I don't think that's it.She wasn't even seen at all in the second game, and barely got a mention, so we've already got more of her than back then.

Also, if she had passed away, I don't think Touka would have talked about her like she did to Kuon, and Kuon's expression was that of someone remembering someone they are very much fond of and misses a lot, but without the sadness that would be implied if that person had passed away. Kuon may even be feeling a bit guilty towards her, as she most likely ran away from home.

As for the past tense, I think all it means is that, when they took her sake with them when they departed, or at least were sent some by the medicine girl, (Eruruw may even have brewed some especialy for them), Eruru most likely told them to make sure they use it for special occasion only so as to make it last. Remember that we're talking about Karula here, and Yamato's a couple hundred miles at best from Tusukuru, so sending shipments of alcohol over to there all the tme wouldn't do.

The only one moments Kuon talked about past tense was when she was talking about her real mother.

Unless something horrible happened its safe to assume that all of Kuon's step-mothers are well.

I doubt Kuon is 10 though, she is labeled as teen, which would put her into 12-17 category (if they aged at the same rate as IRL ofc). And considering how her body looks I would say she would be the same age as Eruruu in the first game, so my guess is like 15-16 years old while Haku being somewhere around 17-18 by looks (though she looks kinda older in anime compared to novel but it seems that's by design).

I'm just gonna say be fucking patient it's only 6 episodes in.
Also keep this in mind, Utawarerumono 1, started out in a Warring States condition where swift action must be done to protect the village.
while Uta 2, started out in a already peaceful country, where we don't even know what the crisis is. Of course it's going to do the opposite of Uta 1, where it's going to "introduce the characters" first and then go into plot rather than plot first and then get the characters on the way.

Also keep this one in mind too, If it's just a SoF/Harem thing, the game won't be praised as it is right now. Also fucking Uta 1 had Slice of life and Harem moments. The first anime just decided to omit most of it to rush the plot, hence the fiasco that is the ending of Uta 1.

What he said. The first series could have been easier to digest, and the plot laid out smoother, had it been spread out on 36 épisodes.

The first series was pretty good until the second half, which was a wreck with 2 episodes mini arcs just to fit in all the adventures. I gave it a 6/10 just because of the girls in the series. I would have given it less otherwise.

The pacing of this has been excellent so far. The scripts/dialogues are so much better. The plot is not rushed either, at least up until now. It's up to you whether you want to drop it or not. I am enjoying this much, much more than the first season.

I'm just going to say YES, just to "shut-up" other people who keeps saying this.
Expect only this, All characters from the First Uta 1 is relegated as NPC characters so don't expect long air time for them. They'll probably be back as major supporting roles in Uta 3, whenever that comes out.

Her hair didn't match her ears in the game. And I think in the anime too.
But it got a bit different color in this version. Is it because of lighting?

Based on appearance, Kuon is either Karura or Yuzuha's daughter. Based on her strength, she is Karura's daughter. Poor girl, her own motehr refuses to be called as such.

Touka was probably a teenager when we saw her in Utawarerumono 1. Now she is an adult and got a lot bigger, naturally.

Might or might not be.

However right now, because Karura and Touka look exactly the same 10-20 years latter and nobody seems to be surprised(at both that and Emperor), I'd say its far more likely that this species just lives way longer than your average human lifespan and ages slower.

With today's episode, I upped the choice made at the time of seeing Utawarerumono, if this has not been done you will miss a part of the show, but it's not an important thing, at least for now. Slow, discursive and fun, but I want some action, too. I think 25 episodes will not be enough with the current pace, if the intention is to tell everything.

This episode is where you -really- start missing out on stuff if you haven't seen the first Utawarerumono.

Really nice surprise in this episode, with music straight from the first game, follow closely by a character staight from the first game. ^^

Did I miss or forget the bit where we find out that Yamato and Tusukuru are two distinct countries, or was that just revealed this episode? It reminds me that the setting and characters of Utawarerumono are supposedly* based less on ancient Japan (Yamato), and more on the Ainu people, an ethnic group that inhabited Hokkaido and northern Honshu. I recall the in-game map placed Tusukuru vaguely in northern Honshu.

Until this episode we had no good way to gauge how far from the first part they were, both in time and in space. We knew the country's name was different, though.

Experts on culture would've probably guessed Yamato is quite unlike Tuskur in manner of dress and the way food is eaten, but there was no reason to assume the distance is in space, not time.

Except that the climate is shown to be very different, down to entire species not even existing there.
We also had a mention that Kuon is from another country when they reached the capital in after credits few episodes ago. connecting that with the fact that she had the fan and knew of Hakuoro's name, very much indicates they are different countries.

Well to be honest MAL's "alternate setting thag" that this had just few weeks ago did confuse a lot of people into thinking this is some kind of a "reboot" or "remake".

Yamato is based around the Sea of Okhotsk, in far eastern Russia, while Tusukuru is based on (And may now be occupying the whole of) Honshu, Japan's main island. So they're totally different countries.

Gods I miss the old serious now.

The serious mode will be in the 2nd half. Just stay tuned

Its around 10-20 years since end of first show.

The impression I've been getting is that there has certainly been a time lapse that is neither too large nor too small. My current guesstimate is 8-9 years, although I digress that it could be as little as 5-7.

Although Kuon definitely looks young, certainly younger than Haku (I see him as at least in his mid-twenties, likely the same age as Hakuoro) or (obviously) any of the returning girls from S1, I would think that all things considered she's probably 18-20 though probably closer to 18, considering she's treated by Touka and Karura during their reunion like someone who's basically on the symbolic divide between adolescent and "adult", although the legal or traditional age of adulthood varies. (Premodern) reckoning in most places usually defined it as 15 or 16, and in certain Japanese and Korean manners of reckoning it was or still is 19 or 20. It also tended to differ for men and women, girls for example pretty much around the world were considered to be "adults" literally as soon as they had their menarche, which is quite young, whilst boys were considered adults usually on the first signs of facial hair, which tends to be later. I would put Kuon somewhere on a median between those two biological versus legal extremes, so I see her as about 18 or 19.

Even so, different people age differently, and although I doubt that the creators of this series are actually taking that fact into account (since the average viewer probably would not be any more likely to), we do have characters like Karura who are pretty unambiguously at least trying to present themselves as un-aging all the time. I would honestly be surprised even if Dorrii and Guraa, if they make a reappearance, look significantly different at all even though it's probably been as many as 8 or 9 years. Kiuru could also theoretically be the same age as Kuon (his VA is even male, and in his mid-20s), so you never really know. Also anime logic so they can look however young or old they want.

Considering Yamato has an emperor who ruled for centuries, Its fair to say that those people have a way longer lifespan.

I sincerely doubt that. The people in this series are pretty much for all intents and purposes ordinary humans with an added kemonomimi element, and there is, apart from the claim that the Yamato emperor has lived for hundreds of years, virtually no suggestion in either this season or S1 that people are that long-lived. The emperor is almost definitely some kind of special case hinting toward a plot point, and furthermore everyone's system of age reckoning in this series doesn't seem off at all compared to real life.

So its time for the characters from last season to show up. What happened to Eruru though, is she Kuon's real mother? I hope not, she already have Hakurou.

Slow, until now I don't know if something will happen, so it's dropped.
