As someone who has never played more than a few minutes of any mmo, I really appreciate all of the info-dump that this show gives. To anyone who plays mmos, how long does it usually take to perform a raid in real life?

I find it interesting how new things are being added to the "game" even after the apocalypse. I wonder how powerful that new skill ranking is going to be.

depends on the game and how big the raid

Great episode! As a long time MMO player, I'm loving these detailed mechanic explanations.

Oh shit, looks like Santa Clause is coming to town. To murder.

I'm getting nervous about how Tetra is getting close to Naotsugu. She better not mess up the Naotsugu x Marielle romance!

I am not a raid expert in fact the MMORPG I played most did not have raids. But the info I know on it a raid should take 4 to 6 hours to complete if done perfectly.

But thinking about it in time is wrong you have to think how many try's does it take to complete. That could take days even Weeks for a guild. You also may consider that they may be a little under leveled for this raid too. Making it hard and longer just as is. Also Elder Tale uses a map that is half the size of plant earth that is so massive. For japan it might make sense but for the rest of the world it be so massive.

I was geeking out during the raid explanation. Tanks pulling aggro, dedicated damage dealers, rangers and mages in the back row, support team healing and buffing the team and also debuffing the enemy...

Same~ Makes me want to go back and play the one I was playing for a short while earlier this year. But I stopped because I know I would get too addicted to it haha. Anyways, nothing more annoying than a boss that ignores aggro (well I'm sure there are more annoying things but yeah).

Demikas is sooo annoying. He needs some serious anger management. Can't believe everyone's dealing with his soloing shit. So much patience.

Hmm something ominous is coming to Akihabara while Shiroe is away! D:

Question.

-Won't the monsters respawn? I mean, they keep dying and reviving at the dungeon entrance, won't the monsters that they defeated earlier respawned by the time they try to get in, no? Or maybe the dungeon only respawn after they completed it?

-How about the boss's health? In my experience, when you leave an enemy alone, their health will regenerate or even return back to 100% right after it is left alone. (I ask this one because they look very satisfied with only scoring 10% of the boss health.)

For number 1 in dungeons and raid it would be a design choice weather they respond or not.

For number 2 yes in MMORPG All monsters seem to reset when players stop hitting them. I don't know of any MMORPG that they don't gain health back.

Yes on both points. But as time goes on you kinda get on a rhythm and get used to it. So it goes faster. That's why the main worry is supplies as William mentioned.

Since you guys are not familiar with raids I explain some of the basic things to you. First of all, the raid is at a different zone where you need to enter. Most of the monsters' respawn timers are increased, so they usually respawn every 2-3 hours. The bosses never respawn, but the server admins "reset" the raid every week on a certain day, which depends on the MMORPG. For example... in WoW this reset happens on Wednesday, but in SWTOR this reset happens on Tuesday. So, basically, if you killed 4 raid monsters out of 8, and the reset happens, then every npc and bosses will get revived after the reset, so you have to restart the whole thing.

A raid can take hours till months to finish. It depends how familiar is your team with the raid. So, if there is a new Raid, your team have to discover the tactics of each bosses, learn it perfectly and kill the bosses, without any casulty. If you lose 1 member early on, then that's it.

And for the health regeneration, usually a raid boss has a room/zone. When a raid boss gets attacked everybody and the boss remains in combat until the boss or the raid group dies. If the raid group gets killed, the boss gets back to his starting place, and recovers its HP. Same goes, if some player manages to escape the Boss' fighting zone.

I hope I could help you, and sorry for my English. :)

Someone like Demikas would get tons of admiration if he can really solo a raid. He would be unusuable in a team-based fight, but why would he care if he can solo and is having fun?

It was shown that he didn't exactly solo, with Shiroe buffing him, stunning enemies, others telling him to look out..on the other hand, nobody there has max level, equipment is lacking accordingly, and Demikas himself is pure rage. If Shiroe would play a different class, i'm sure he could work out solo strategies.

I'm surprised that they are suprised that the bosses changed though. They didn't show the original level, but if they are all across the board it's no surprise. You really thought a level 30 boss that shows up in a level 90+ raid stayed the same etc.?

HAHAHA, YES FINALLY.

Long have I waited, finally an 'MMO' anime with actual MMO mechanics in it!
GLORIOUS, 10/10.

DEEN didn't destroy the dream. They continued it! (though I preferred Satelight's animation and art for everything.....)

For too long have I been content with anime such as, Sword Art Online, which calls itself an MMO anime, yet all it does, it has HEALTH BARS! Although we all understand the GLORIOUSNESS of Health bars. The SAO health bars are BLASPHEMOUS! They have no NUMBERS, and NO MANA BAR! What HERESY IS THAT?!

Damn I forgot how amazing Log Horizon was..... it's been so long since the first season. Why is this anime not in my top 5? Probably because Mein Kaiser takes all priority, as good as Log Horizon is, nothing will ever beat LotGH. Why is Shiroe not on my Favourite character list?! Why u may ask? Well because my favourite character list needss more moeeee, and shiroe is a gamer nerd! THANK GOD HE IS A GAMER NERD, finally an accurate representation of an MMO player.... unlike that other anime that masquarades itself as something it isn't to lure in massess of unsuspecting nerds.

Damn feels so awkward to write good stuff about an anime..... I always just criticize and speak BS in those 'episode discussion' threads....

People really need to stop comparing LH and SAO, while similar, they are very different shows trying to accomplish different things.

SAO was never supposed to be a "party" game. It's appeal was that it was the first Virtual Reality game (which Log Horizon wasn't until it became reality), so it was more focused on individual experience in VR. That was the appeal.

Let's also not forget that SAO was designed by Kabaya for his own reasons, and those reasons had othing to do with creating a MMO game. He forced everyone to play HIS game.

LH started out as only a computer game, so of course it would have more MMO aspects, and now that the game is real (which SAO wasn't), of course the writer can make human society work like an MMO game.

To change the subject, I love the writer's vision in this show. This episode really shows why Shiroe is so respected by the other players, I love the scene where William totally respects how Shiroe was able to supply a 24 party coming from only an 8 player guild. Also where Shiroe figures out how to beat the bosses because he is the only one who remembers all the rules and prior experience.

Tetora's personality is also perfect considering that she is able to heal so well. The scene where she heals the people after the Orc Jelly and they are so happy feeds in perfectly to the "idol image". Being an old (and I do mean old) D&D player one tends to think of Clerics as religious, but if one thinks about it, the ability to swing in and save hit points of fighters is a pretty damn cool skill to have, and is perfect for an idol. Great writers can take tired cliches and make them fresh, this show does that in spades.

I'm really hoping Akatsuki is going to develop a level of independence from Shiroe. I mean, I enjoy their relationship, but she could easily be a well-written character without needing Shiroe to be around. Sort of like how Rundel was well-written even without needing Isuzu around, you know? (<-maybe a bad example)

I LOATHE Akatsuki, though; may skip the next episode just so I don't have to deal with an all-Akatsuki episode. I was enjoying the raid primarily because that little bitch wasn't around, other than as a device to censor the Big Guy.

Regardless of it's selling point, SAO is STILL an MMORPG. Considering they have guild system and also needed to form a party to defeat the floor bosses, it's simply absurd to say that it was never supposed to be a "party" game.

SAO is an MMORPG anime that forgot that it's supposed to be an MMORPG, it's as simple as that.

The currently airing SAO mini-arc is actually about raiding a dungeon, but they only have 7 people and MMO mechanics are skipped in its entirety.

It's somewhat a shame. The original SAO light novels actually went into a lot of details surrounding MMO mechanics, since the author has long been a MMO fan. I'm glad that Log Horizon has not forsaken the mechanics side of a MMO anime.

Man I love this show, I have fun with it. Even if it's some small moment, I have fun. And isn't that what counts? Why watch an anime you can't enjoy for the sake of enjoying it.
Still, I think I'm alone in this one as far as my family is concerned. My uncle might like it given that he's ye olde WoW hermit. I know he's hiding his anime side, I've caught him watching Rosario Vampire.
I've been trying to get my cousins to watch it instead of youtube poop and guys screaming obscenities at each other. They liked If Her Flag Breaks, but I think they're more of the SAO faction if anything.
SAO is more action based and cynical while Log Horizon is more thoughtful and optimistic.
I go by many names, some call me Hoshimaru, others call me Jiro or Aosou-Kun.
I believe myself a force for good, a papercrafter by trade, and one who seeks love and beauty animesque.

I'm still a bit confused about the details of raid mechanics.

1. When a player gets killed in a raid, can they re-enter the battle immediately, or do they have to wait for the other players to exit the zone or die? (I'm guessing they're just re-entering without delay in Elder Tale, but I'm not sure. I'm also guessing if all 24 players are dead at the same time, the whole raid gets reset, and they have to kill -all- the bosses again.)

2. Shiroe says raids can take over a month, but how is that possible in the real world? Does the raid not need to be completed in a single play session? ...Or is Shiroe including the time spent figuring out the boss's attack patterns in failed attempts?

Aside: That character at the end appears to be the same one that was polishing the Royal Guard armour in episode 1.
