Hey, hey, gaiz, remember how a few pages ago I said that not everyone would "get" this show? Yeah, good times.
How about we respect everyone's opinion, positive or negative, and not let other people's opinions sway our own views on this show (and other things in life).
Some people liked it and understood it, some people liked it but didn't understand it, some people did understand it but didn't like it and then there were those that didn't understand it and therefore didn't like it.
From what I've seen, most of the people that have voted this show poorly fall in the last category. Now, hold on, before you ready your fingers to type out a well structured three page response filled with arguments about how you're special and extremely intelligent and that you did get the show and that you thought it was terrible because so and so, I implore you to not do that. No one cares. You didn't like the show. Fine. I'm not writing this comment to rile people up or anything. I'm not insulting your intelligence or your interpretation skills. I just want everyone to behave in a... fairly civil manner. This goes out to the fanboys of this show as well. Just because someone doesn't like this show, doesn't mean you have to defend it to death and hurl insults at others. Just realize that in life there will always be someone with a different opinion than you about something. Just let it go.
The reason why I think people will have a problem with actually letting it go is because Hachiman is a perfect example of a self-insert character (because of how realistic he is). Some people will feel that when you insult/demean Hachiman (or the show), you're actually personally attacking their life experiences as well (because they can relate to them). So yeah, there's not a whole lot I can do about that, other than say ... let's try and get along, shall we?
However, with that said, people who don't like this show, do not make claims such as: the characters aren't interesting or developed, nothing happened, there was no story etc. Such claims are false.
From episode 3-4, I already knew that this show's greatest strength and weakness would be that it's EXTREMELY subtle. You need to pay attention to facial expressions, body language, think about double meanings behind certain lines/actions etc. in order to "get" why certain things are happening and why certain characters are behaving the way they are behaving.
It is revealed that Yukino lies. In what other instances has she told lies? (for instance in episode 7, near the end, when Yukino and Hikki are talking about that Rumi girl and how she reminds her of Yui. Wait, just Yui? Doesn't she remind you of yourself as well, Yukino? Why aren't you saying this? Or what about when Hachiman asks what her relation to Hayato is and she answers that their only connection is that their parents blabla. Is that really all there is to it?)
Hachiman also lies a few times, mostly to himself (in order to justify him not wanting to get close to people, so that he can't get hurt). The problem is the story is told from his point of view, so we assume that everything he tells is the absolute truth. But is it though?
There's a lot of speculation possible about certain characters and what their deal is. Like for instance Haruno and Hayato. We obviously don't know yet, because their story hasn't been told, but there's certainly depth to these characters.
This isn't a show where everything is handed to you on a platter. You have to actively connect the dots and rewatch certain scenes, paying close attention to detail.
There's no forced drama or forced exposition... or characters over reacting about their feelings etc. Sure there are scenes focusing on Totsuka and that girl that likes gay stuff etc (mostly for the sake of humor), but that's not what the core of the story is. It saddens me when I read people's comments and the only thing they picked up on is... lol that trap... super kawaii desu.
*deep internet breath*
There's also a lot of foreshadowing.
For instance, in the tennis match episode, remember how Yukino told Hachiman not to go join the tennis club because everyone would turn against him (also because she didn't want him to leave their club, because she hadn't "fixed" him yet)? Remember what happened in episodes 10 to 12? Yeah, bet you didn't make that connection.
Or how about in episode 2, where Yumiko asks people to go out with her to get ice cream or whatever. Did you notice how at first Hayato declines? But, oh, what's that, Yui and Yumiko suddenly started talking about Yukino. Wait, suddenly Hayato wants to go along with Yumiko? Why could that be?
And there are a ton of these little things spread out throughout the show.
So please, do not say that nothing happened. You just didn't pick up on them.
Which is fine, because maybe you weren't that interested or whatever.
So, with that said, Imma post an incredibly obnoxious TL;DR line and I apologize in advance, but it is the first thing that comes to mind when I read some of the comments posted here and when I look at shows you guys have given high ratings.
TL;DR - People giving this show a vote below 6 are doing so because: not enough forced drama, forced romance, forced character development, X-ploshuns and kamehameha spam.
