THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE. ---------------------------------------- Nice short animation; I especially loved the backgrounds and the overall atmosphere. It took me a while after I finished watching it to realize that it was all a flashback (yeah, I'm old and slow, sue me :P). It was kind of sad that the metal creature ended up just being a head that served as basically a decoration :< On a side note, I rewatched Fumiko's Confession after this and marvelled at how different the two shorts are. |
You've come a long way, baby. |

Very nice short. Purely atmospheric, I felt chills just by listening to the raindrops falling. Subtle, simple piano melodies filling the space in the most emotional scenes, making you feel something akin to a dash of nostalgia, wrenching your heart at the sight of a departing. And not forgetting the marvelous animation and backdrop art details. A truly lovely work. |
I think, then procrastinate. Therefore, I am. |

Abrupt credits were abrupt. Thought it ended before it did, making for some mad confusion. Other than that, the only thing that should be clarified (more so on the animator's part), was the fact that the yellow girl wasn't abandoning the robot when he fell apart. Lovely film though, especially for its length. |

That was...mellow. I feel like it would be absolutely fantastic to watch while drinking tea during one of those constant spring downpours. As it was, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I think my favorite aspect was the reflection of the town in the water on the ground, in effect making the town stretch on forever in both directions. The visuals really drew me in, especially the usage of the bright rain jacket colors against the blue-grey backgrounds. A simple story, but compelling nonetheless. |

That was rather beautiful. A dark, lonely, rainy town sure gives off a depressing atmosphere. |

Everyone's got their own take on this (or even several). Many more complicated pieces aren't as open to as much interpretation, which I think makes it better than the sum of its parts. Anyway, among the various readings of redemption, of good (or bad) friendship etc, a lot of the time the focus is mostly on the girl (and whoever the old lady turns out to be); one I haven't come across as much is finding any fault with the tin man so I'll add a bit here. It could be argued he was unable/unwilling to move on from a time when he was spurned in the past; staying out in the rain where he rusted. You could find a metaphor of him being deserted in a time of difficult conditions, or alternately a lack of will to move on and not just waste away (I suppose). In either case he hadn't entirely given up hope and offered warmth to a stranger, but the end result was he was unable to fully reciprocate when the time came. Anyway it's quite a slight story but the room for personal engagement helps lift it up. |

It's a beautiful short piece of animation. :) It does not have dialogues but the story can still be understood. |

Awwn, poor him, you pulled his arm too hard little girl! I hope they have a good canalisation in that town, since it's always raining... More seriously, it was a sweet anime. So if I understood, that robot/thing had memory from another time where the town was sunny and full of life. The girl then spot him and since he's not responding, she get away. After saving her, they pass some times together. After he broke (because he remembered the past time with this girl?), the girl go get her grandma and take him back home. It was cute. The art was great, though it was hard to see if the girl was pulling any emotion since her face was often lacking of detail. I guess it's part of the art style. |

Im sorry what exactly happened? The girl grandmother took the head was to keep it as a souvenir or so that the girl wont feel guilty or she didnt want to leave the robot alone? But wasnt the robot still alive I mean he wave his hand as to say goodbye when the girl left to fetch her grandma. Uhh, I think Im overthinking it , Im gonna rewatch it. |

If you liked the feels of Rain Town you'll love Machinarium, Fez or The Tiny Bang Story. Those games are what it instantly reminded me of, with the same surreal world quality and story-without-words (which can be so classy when done right.) I can't help but feel there's a deeper story to Rain Town, like why is it constantly raining? Was there a sunnier time before this, and how did it become like that? I wondered if the town was standing all alone in a world full of water.. :P This would make such an awesome game of adventure and exploration, like a wetter version of Journey. |

LOL, I had the same thoughts. Seems like there was a girl in the town that the robot befriended before the town became rainy, then she had to leave the town when it became too rainy and leave him behind. This new little girl comes along that reminds him of his old friend, they hang out, she pulls him too hard, he falls and breaks, and I'm guessing they're gonna fix him and give him a new body. This was a cute short. I wish they showed him fixed up and having fun with the little girl though. Maybe he got too rusty sitting outside in the rain for so long =P |

Beautiful little story that has some stunning animation. Oh and I love hearing rain ... so this was a musical to me :) I'm thinking either it was a flashback as we see an old woman in a room filled with plants and a pot having eyes all of a sudden (Could be the little child) Or this was actually the grandma herself, not that big of a flashback. Not completely sure how the sunny part fits in. |

I loved the atmosphere and slow tempo of this but the end was kinda... weird? I get it that it was her grandma in his "no rain" flashback and that just about everything was his flashback while he was sitting on the table in gradma's house. It was good but... kinda simple. It lacked some deeper feels for me in the end. The animation and mood were great though. 6/10 |
