THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE. ---------------------------------------- And with tongue planted firmly in cheek, the Bentenmaru makes its first raid under the command of Captain Marika Katou. I found the episode very entertaining, and loved that they sent Kane ahead to act as a staged victim so that when they boarded the target they could use a combination of showmanship and intimidation. For those wanting more action, the preview all but shouts out "There will be war!" |

That showy style of pirating is class epicified, nice comeback shot Marika, I wasn't expecting her to pull off a gunshot like that. I'm glad Chiaki joined Marika's crew though, the series wouldn't be as good without both of them together. The preview is pretty much suggesting next week's ep will be ship vs ship warfare |

Marika is so awesome in her pirate outfit. I loved it when she pulled off that gunshot when she almost lost the fight. |

Ok, so Marika's pirate captain training begins and she has her 1st hit, btw doesn't this have that "Star Trek" thing in it, were Marika is the captain, Chaki is Mr. Spock, Misa is Doc. McCoy and Kane is Mr. Zulu? Them taking the Princess Apricot is like something simililar to "I M Weasel" were the people are even happy to be boraded by pirates. |

Ah yes, the political side of Privateering. I sort of feel bad for Marika, but that ditz thing Chiaki was talking about annoys me, tool. I liked seeing those two rich chicks freaking out, though, and I laughed when one swooned. Schnitzer is now the best character, by the way. |

I loled at Marika's first raid. It had all the "I'm Guybrush Threepwood and I'm a mighty pirate!" feeling. Also, she wears less makeup and still is cuter than Jack Sparrow *dodges Bullets from all the Johnny Depp fangirls* Still, story progresses slowly, but I like how the story goes. And who else was all like "aww, don't be such a tsundere", when Chiaki left again? EDIT: Looking at that cardboard-UFO made me think of denpa onna XD |

Marika reminds me of Kirk in some ways given her high intelligence, ability to see unusual ways to solve problems, single-minded focus during a crisis, and her attraction to an adventurous and dangerous lifestyle as a fulfilling purpose in and of itself (who knows, she may even turn out to be a womanizer, though I doubt that). But there are a lot of differences between the two as well. The other characters I don't see the comparison so much, they seem to be very different character types to me. However, I've been comparing the style of the two shows in my head a lot, given that both feature a lot of dialog, a strong emphasis on putting "science" in the Sci-Fi, and a mix of ways the characters resolve conflict. On the other hand, the original Star Trek was very much a political and moral/ethical beast, often used to highlight the creator's opinions on the political, social and moral issues of the early 1960s. Mouretsu Pirates has none of that (so far). |

I loved that paper running part - it made it more realistic, as she is working for the government so there are some duties, regulations and all conected with it, like in real life (as technicaly she is not a pirate) and the training part with few nice scenes... but what was with model making lessons :D also ship attack part - it was cute and I can somehow understand that theatrical part of it after all some people like such stuff, especially if it's safe and local atraction :) Kirk? I would rather go into Next Generations - she is NOT Picard, but has some traits of Riker |

Sure i know piracy isn't something that should be taken seriously in this show. And i'm not sure if i grasp everything that's going on, but is it me or the whole piracy's premise is so badly fucked up that it doesn't make sense? How i undertand it by now is, pirates are oficially recognized by government that doesn't give a fuck about thier doings, but with a Letter or Marque the pirates aren't actually pirates yet they have to do some piracy within 50 days since receiving the letter. Then comes the thing with actual attack of pirate ships, people are happy they're getting robed by pirates and the ship they are on is going to cover their stolen valuables. Seems like you just can't depend on logic in this one, let's just take it easy and enjoy whatever they do, i guess. |

That's why there is also part with all those documents. and that scene of attack - for me it seems (if we need to apply logic here) as some kind of attraction that people can have during cruise, like clowns or trained animals - it's safe for passengers, as they won't loose life or money due to insurance, so they are happy to see such a show. Real life example would be hard to find... ok once I read about partisants in some Asian country (Nepal?) that were doing similar things to get money from tourists. Of course all of above fits if we would like to take it 100% seriously :) |

OrochiPL said: pirates are oficially recognized by government that doesn't give a fuck about thier doings Go back and re-watch Misa's history lecture. The "Galactic Empire" came in and absorbed all sides in the war between the Colony Federation and the rebellious planets, ending the war. However, it recognizes the right to some self rule of the individual planets and does not spend its time policing individual ships engaged in low scale fighting between the former waring colonies, so long as the principles involved are legitimate and things don't get out of hand. The attack by the Bentenmaru on the luxury cruise liner was an attack on a ship of another government. It typifies the types of actions that are to small for the Galactic Empire to be concerned about. I really, really doubt that the attack was per-arranged with the cruise line since Kane said to one of the girls that their losses would be insured, which would surely be very bad business for the cruise line or insurer. The "fight" with Kane was staged very simply to give the impression that they were ready, willing, and able to kill if need be to get the victims' cooperation. The passengers thought the whole thing was delightful until Kane's "dead body" hit the floor. The choice of target was no accident - they wanted an easy and profitable catch for Marika's first prize. The training Marika is going through is not play-fighting - they are forcing her to learn a deadly serious business. The Bentenmaru appears to be a heavily armed ship and it needs to be for two good reasons. One is that the authorities of other governments most assuredly do take exception to their activities. Two is that it will be pressed into service should a war break out. |

What's with the fuss about the passengers? Surely anyone watching an anime about space pirates for entertainment has no right to complain about anyone in-universe enjoying the sight of those same space pirates? I'm surprised that there's no portion in the episode dedicated to introducing her existing crew, but I guess that just means that they'll take time to gradually fill us in on them and their role. I'm so excited. :3 |

REAL Pirates prefer targets like this cruise ship: Juicy, not much resistance. Stakes need to be higher for a pirate to actually engage a ship fit for combat. Ofc, this looks better in the movies. But what would YOU prefer? I big galleon, filled to the brim with gold, diamonds and rare spices but few cannons? Or maybe a well armed frigate with a crew that is very well trained in ship to ship combat? Your pick. |

EDIT: Also, I think that "we have to do some pirating within 50 days" may have something to do with the governemnt wanting money. Privateers have to give a certain percentage of their loot to the government. And ofc the government wants it's money worth, that's why they go with the "at least 1 ship every 50 days" rule, mainly because they are not in war and cannot give out actual targets for the pirates. At least that's the way I see it. |

The only show that did that well was Seitokai no Ichizon. And somehow, they've managed to make a HanaKana-voiced character dull. While I enjoy the OP, it seems inappropriate for the actual show which is mostly plodding. And then, despite the clothes-shopping, Marika still wears her school uniform skirt with her pirate costume. Captain Jack Sparrow would never have committed so grave a faux pas. Anyway, as someone mentioned, it was a bit of a carnival atmosphere this week as they conned the cruise ship marks into giving up their gold and jewels. Hopefully, (hope springs eternal) they'll have a whole interesting episode next week. Not as good as episode 5 but at least there was a lot of development. 5/5 The Galactic Empire's policy of self-rule allows Sea of Morningstar to keep authorizing legal pirates with a Letter of Marque. I doubt any kind of piracy could have been legalized under the rule of the Galactic Empire . However, they don't think it's worth it to politically pressure Sea of Morningstar to change an already existing law that has a big symbolic meaning for them. But even so it's only allowed because it's a relic of the past that's not significant anymore. So basically the Galactic Empire doesn't make a big deal of actually chasing legal pirates down. If they spot a small gig like the one at the luxury cruiser they will go after them if they happen to be mobilized nearby, but such small time pirates aren't worth chasing down with full strength. But the Galactic Empire will still obviously take more intense and larger scale measures even against a legalized pirate crew if it becomes too aggressive and dangerous. Bentenmaru is supposed to be a significant pirate ship, so maybe they have a criminal record that's severe enough to make them considered a threat. Normal people like the passagers of the luxury cruiser, would not be aware of pirate business though, so the name Bentenmaru would not make them any more alarmed than any other name. I don't understand why the passagers were so calm, though. Even with insurance it's still a robbery and they are at the mercy of criminals. They only gave out the valuables after Kane was killed in front of their eyes so everyone needed to feel shocked and threatened into giving out their valuables. Why would they make themselves appear more cruel when it would makes them considered more of a threat if they don't need to? |

It's the same as a monarchy. When a king dies, his oldest son succeeds him, even if he's still underage and inexperienced. Then the closest nobles teach him how to do stuff etc. Just remember France, where the people were actually happy when a King dies and they get a new one. Great episode, definitely one of the best this season for now. Liked the duel between Kane and Marika, and Marika was really cute when she was talking to the passengers. |

I really loved seeing those cities that planet is really diverse. The city Marika came from looked like a central European city like Vienna or Zurich maybe even a little bit like Venice. When Marika was picked up the first city the went to looked futuristic something you see allot in sic fi the second city looked like a bit more messy with straight lines and blocks like it was build be robots. The last city looked like something you expect in ancient Greece or the Roman Empire with a bit of fantasy added to it which looked really amazing. The episode itself was packed with information about piracy in space it was pretty interesting but could have been better. They didn't introduce the characters and it was hard to judge there personality i hope they go more in to detail on them in future episodes. The raid was pretty funny and i liked the way the passengers reacted it was pretty unexpected and it went so peaceful it's like nothing you would expect of a pirate raid. And Marika mistakes added to it was nice she did well for a beginner. |

Years ago (in the 1990s) I was part of the team that worked on the training simulator for the Hubble Space Telescope for NASA. It was very elaborate with both software and hardware components, and actually 'plugged' into the actual flight control systems so that an operator sitting at one of the control panels in theory couldn't tell if he was looking at real data or simulator data. In fact, one time the folks setting up the system for a training exercise mis-wired the patches and we accidentally started sending commands to the Shuttle, which happened to be up at the time. That caused a commotion. Fortunately, the "ID" was wrong so the Shuttle's systems rejected the commands, but it was disruptive none the less. Anyway, there were several 'servicing missions' over the life of the Hubble, the intent of which was to send the Shuttle up to capture it and have the astronauts make repairs, swap out old instruments for new instruments, etc. Of course, you only get one chance to do this, so it all has to be perfect. So, there was always a lot of training around these servicing missions, including 5 or 6 full blown multi-day (and all night) exercises where EVERYONE was involved, including the astronauts going through their parts in the big dive tanks they used for practice. The full blown exercises usually lasted 3 or 4 days, and they were continuous, as if it was the real thing, so the exercises were going on 24 hours for three to four days. Now, I was on the team of 5 or 6 developers that managed the software itself, and for these training exercises we always worked closely with the NASA Hubble project team that planned the simulations to inject "problems" into the script. The "problems" ranged from small (a battery fails to charge properly, or a specialty tool doesn't fit) to large (the new solar panels won't expand) to crisis issues. I participated in at least 5 full blown exercises over the course of three servicing missions. I don't recall ANY of the crisis issues ever being resolved. Actually solving the crisis problems wasn't the point. The real point was to get everybody, and I mean everybody (astronauts, ground crew operators, specialists, and mission leads) to learn the skills needed to solve crisis problems as a team under stress. If an actual crisis problem were to occur, at the very least the whole world would be watching and seeing the failure, at the worst the astronauts lives could be in danger. Everybody to was forced to learn how to work together under very high levels of stress, with little sleep. Tempers would flair, careers would be on the line. I recall once an actual fist fight broke out on the operations floor. We needed people able to work together, analyze the problem, throw out idea after idea, discuss, challenge, accept or reject each in turn. The crisis problems were usually meant NOT to be solvable - they were impossible problems because the goal was to turn the participants into people you could count on during a crisis. The goal was behavior under stress. Just like the Kobayashi Maru test in Star Trek 2, that ambush simulation Marika faced was designed to test her character, not be a battle she could win. |
