| Steel Ball Run anime when? |
| The art and animation were very good and the story quite nice even if some parts were not particularly well-developped, but a great metaphor of today's animation industry anyway (CGI / electricity vs traditional animation / oil lamps). Indeed, I too would be quite anxious about my future prospects if I was a new 2D animator beginning in the industry right now. |

| I was wondering what the main conflict of the story would be, and then I saw the electricity lines. Brilliant. Really impressive story and handling in general, not just for a 20-minute ova. |

| Beautiful work, indeed. I thought the kind of development isn't really new and I kinda predicted what would happen. But the execution is very well-done. I felt sad about those lamps as the guy throw stones at them. I thought that scene is emotional. Can't wait for the other 3(?) episodes. I wish there are more high-quality anime like this every season. |

| That was quite a nice anime. Hiroshi Kamiya selling lamps lol I think the older generation would enjoy this a lot since they can relate to it. I really liked the background scenery. From me it's 7/10 |

| A reasonably interesting story of irony; technological progress made an orphan boy's fortune then took it away. The climax scene where he realized his hypocrisy and foolishness and his dramatic way of "quitting the lamp business" was a bit heavy-handed, though, and I'm not sure I like the frame which lets us know that everything turned out reasonably alright since he's living in a good-sized house with his son and grandkid. It dispels the tension that remained at the end of the main story, which I think weakens it. |

| Beautiful, Been a while since I saw something that made me teary eyed. Better than I expected too. There were some parts I didn't like/felt was necessary (like when tried to burn the Chefs house/barn/whatever) But I still think It was a great short movie. |

| I'm glad to see, for once, a story about modernization that just doesn't denigrate modernization without looking at its good aspects. Stories like that are becoming rare nowadays. I really like the message of the story: you can be nostalgic of your time but it's sort of egoist to be against progress just by nostalgia. A really good movie. |
| I'm not prone to nostalgia but this one makes me sad somehow, thank the gods it was short. In spite of that, I still think this was nice and the message behind it is very relevant to the changing times. |

| I liked it. But first, the bad: the music at the start was overbearing, direction was choppy, and the story could've done without the rather cliched kid-adult-love-marriage cycle. Grandpa's hate of electricity also felt too intense to seem believable. His epiphany was sorta "duh". However the key moments (boy bringing light to the town, then as a man to the forest) were genuinely touching. Good message too, and quite opposite to Miyazaki's "down with industrialization!" that seems to stifle his works. |

His epiphany was sorta "duh". I have to disagree with this. His family and hatred by electricity are related. It is with the money of his trade that he supports the family. The electricity took that source of income of the four. And I haven't seen anything unusual in his epiphany. In the middle of hate, he said a phrase that served as a trigger for the past, for when he wanted the modernization. -------------------- I watched yesterday and re-watched today crying. It was all too beautiful from start to finish. |

| Interessting story gooad art and animation.I like that story is is pretty real and moving...And Kamiya Hiroshi's voice suis this chara, I think! Glad that I've watched it finally! |

| The fast advanced to technology made a lot of things absolute, but we never thought about what consequences this has on other people's live; for those who didn't catch on quick. |
| I got to say I really liked this, it had a nice setting and a very interesting though saddening story attached to it! The art and animation were quite nice as well, pretty beautiful ending as well I must say! 7/10 |

| I loved the first half of it a lot. The animation and the art style was stupendous, some backgrounds seemed more like oil paintings. I loved the rural village setting, with its lush verdure, the beautiful thatched houses, the short wooden bridges, the sound of cicadas, all brought to life with a soothing color palate. But on to the downsides: too much emoness. Like Hellogoodbye pointed out, the ojisan seemed less desperate and more bitter or spiteful. Rather than keeping emotions subtle and human, anime these days exaggerate the emotions so much that they stop being believable, and people don't seem to mind because its being done so much and so frequently that they have accepted it. The ojisan writhing in his bed and crying like a baby, and then running out all the way to set some fire (which fails), and after that he takes all his lamps to a lake, lights them and breaks them one by one all the while spewing his sentimental rant was too much. I prefer a story which is more subtle and restrained in showing emotions. The 'show more, tell less' approach adopted in House of Five leaves, or even house of small cubes (which has a very similar premise) are just two good examples. Still liked it a lot, it was good, especially for amateur work. 7/10 |

| This short film was very well done with the portrayal of Minosuke and his family being very enjoyable to watch. The progression and time-skips were all well-paced, allowing it to be quite heartbreaking to see the protagonist's struggles. It was not shown, but I too want to know what he began selling instead of gas lamps afterwards. |

| Wow, didn't expect this to be pretty deep. Loved the cinemography, colours and scenery (I even took a few screenshots). Good use of it's limited time too. Huge props to Kamiya Hiroshi. Never expected him to voice that kind of character. Put together my favourite screencaps: |

| For a short movie this was just great. In those 25 minutes they delved deep in their own history and told the tale how new age replaced the old one. I also remembered all those people who were losing their jobs due to machines in later era. One lamp that lead to beautiful tale that became part of Japan history, that's what this movie is. 8/10 Great short. If anything it would be good to know what oji-san was selling after those lamps. |

I was like watching a Natsume's Book of Friends episode without Takashi and Nyanko Sensei or a Mushishi episode without Ginko The art and scenery was gorgeously beautiful and the concept of time and technological advancement was magnificently portrayed It was a magical experience indeed |
