Yeah, he was finally revealed. It was the embodiment of the ship, Klabautermann.
A sprite who dwells in a ship that's truly cared for!

Guess one needs a cool-down from time to another between epic eps xD

It was kind of touching.

4/5!

To the epicness!

Edit: Almost forgot, the names Mozu and Kiwi made me laugh a lil', they mean in Arabic, Banana and Kiwi xPP

Usopp never really was a favorite character of mine, he was likeable enough, with some of the funniest moments in One Piece with his interactions with Luffy and Chopper. However, he really grew as a character in these last episodes. Although a little bit extreme, it is perfeclty understanble his actions and desire to save the ship. If you have one, imagine how it would be losing your most sacred and dear object (be it an amulet or something given to you by someone important or whatever), and that one didn't even take you to the sky (and brought you back).

EDIT: Oh yeah, WHERE'S SANJI? He is always the sneaky bastard! Well he eventually appears and saves the day xD but seriously, he is left out of the most important parts in a lot of the arcs, I remember Sanji not being there in the climax of Little Garden and Arabasta.

Finally its revealed way back during the "skypia arc" when Usopp saw that ghost looking figure fixing the ship. Honestly i found this episode pretty emotional, its great to see that the ship actually has its own life as well. Almost like its a nakama that is a part of the straw hats crew and this episode really helped to define that. I like to think of it as character development for Merry lol. Even though it still seems a little over dramatic, usopp just needs to learn to let go for god sakes. The ship is tearing apart. Nothing they can do.

Definitely agree about Usopp. I can relate a bit with him being upset over Merry and the whole feeling inferior next to the rest of the Strawhats, and hell I can even relate to the whole overreacting to it (because really, he is overreacting, even if it is somewhat understandable).

I felt really emotional just watching this, I swear I'm going to bawww my head off when Merry goes bye bye for good.

As for Sanji, glad to know I'm not the only one who noticed that. I'm starting to wonder if he has something he's hiding.

Oda took this idea from mythic lore

It was said that sailors were sometimes assisted by water kobolds/gnomes whatever you wanna call them.

They were always near the ship in case of emergency. So you can think of klabautermann as something like that if you don't like the 'spiritual' explanation

Yeah, because making it be someone from the crew or Skypiea that repaired it would be much better. This was very well thought out if you knew what Klabautermann is.

i'm over usopp. the fact that merry materialized has helped me understand that he feels like he's losing a nakama, but franky makes very valid points which usopp throws to the wayside. it's almost become an obsession - like "i've gone this far now, there's no turning back" so he refuses to listen to reason. the fact that he said luffy and co. wouldn't come for him because they weren't nakama anymore also infuriated me, because by this point he should KNOW what a loyal and kind person luffy is. can the usopp sobfest be over soon? it's uncomfortable to watch.

Come on now, I don't care what any of you said about 'losing something you loved dearly' some things don't last forever, and you have to move on, regardless, watching this was annoying as hell.

No, not really. Usopp actually knows what he has done and is taking responsibility for it. Things are not that easy, he did something really serious to the Straw Hats and specially Luffy (questioning his authority in a moment when he needed to act like a captain), and he himself is still upset. On the other hand, being obsessed over something you can't fix is not in any way a weird thing in this anime and I honestly don't understand why this seems to be bothering people. Do you remember the Arlong arc? Heck, what Nami did at one point, after her treasure got stolen by the Marines, was the exact same thing Usopp is doing now ("It doesn't matter! I will raise the 100 million berries again!").

Do what you want, but his conflict is a key point in the arc and will be relevant in other scenarios. It's not a matter or being or not annoying, but that you won't understand things that happen later if you skip stuff.

And on the annoyance, the Going Merry for Usopp is like the straw hat for Luffy... just saying.

this was a really touching episode.
usopp really comes to terms with the fate of the merry
and it's so sweet knowing that the mystery man was the ship looking over the crew <3
i almost go emotional seeing how much of a bond the ship has with them.
looks like next episode will be about franky's past~

Fantastic and touching episode. It sheds even more light on Usopp's point of view, and made the way he was behaving much more reasonable. The Going Merry isn't just a ship—she's alive. Franky's also a really good guy, it seems. I like him now.

I was impressed with Usopp's resolve and tenacity. Moments like that really make him a true Straw Hat. Despite all that's happened, this has been a very good arc for him.

Oh god, anime makes me cry over the weirdest shit.

Not only have I cried over a bloody vending machine (courtesy of Gintama), I've now bawled my eyes out over a ship!

So, the thing Usopp saw fixing the ship in Skypiea was basically like the fairy incarnation of Merry? :/

Really liking the characterization for Usopp this arc- he's almost always presented in a comedic light, so it's nice to see a different side of him. The Going Merry is his priceless treasure (just like Luffy's hat) so losing it must be horrid for him.

Damn, that ending tho!
At least they had the common courtesy to knock, I guess. XD

Franky probably has that sense of responsibility about Usopp’s ship learned from Tom! He, being quite impulsive, firstly assumed that the best course of action was to take it apart if Usopp sees it as a ship because it’s not anymore, but on further getting to know why Usopp loves it he decided to offer a beautifully nice deal, to take care of it for him. He even slam dunked Usopp into the water to make him see the shape his ship was truly in. Usopp being unable to let go of it may be “childish” but I don’t think it’s uncalled for. Learning about the shape of his ship after already being in a state of rejection of his own dream via him feeling useless and weak, and even a sense of rejection over his crew looking for a real shipwright, something that would make him feel even more useless all pushed him to this state. The one thing he has control over, or at least thinks he does, is his treasure and he refuses to let it go. Franky forced him to stop lying to himself and admit that at least. He’s a good guy even if he steals from pirates and causes mayhem. I think it was meaningful to have Usopp snap when he was called a total amateur since, that's a soft spot for him, it’s one of the reasons he’s feeling this way right now.

And so, someone actually spoiled that the shipwright was the Merry’s spirit the episode they appeared in Skypiea. I sincerely doubt they guessed that so perfectly but I never forgot it. I actually dismissed it as being too far fetched. That said, we already have weird long dogs, and mixed animal, and animal people and fishmen and stuff and I have to say that a mythical fairy type incarnation of the Merry isn’t so far fetched that it’s really an issue. I just hope we get it expanded on as they possibly say goodbye to the Merry and leave her in Franky’s care! Speaking of leaving her behind, I think that’s what the ED is actually about. The further we go on the further it feels there’s no way to keep her around, especially with her telling Usopp herself that she’s on her last legs.

The doorbell ringing was horrifying. There was no other noise and we all knew what that meant. Both the overpowered monsters of people CP9 were coming in, and our boys and girls will get beaten down and learn all the horrible things that happened to their loved ones. And it just kept ringing over and over again, like an omen for what was about to come. Things are about to get scary.

Franky helping Usopp out in getting over his denial towards Merry's severe condition by letting him see the reason why she wouldn't make it to the next destination for himself was a bit harsh but necessary.

I'm very glad that he also let Usopp know about how much the Going Merry loved him and the crew by revealing the identity of that mysterious being who repaired the ship. I didn't consider this but with superpowers and sea monsters being a thing in this series, fairies ain't out of the question especially since it's a legend among sailors.

CP9's here, shit...
