Just watched this at the theatres and man was this a great experience. A sports anime made into a movie format was indeed a great choice. It was awesome from beginning to end. Looking forward to the next movie!!!

That was a lot of fun to watch!! My theatre wasn't loud but they at least chuckled once in a while. However, I wish the movie was a bit longer since I felt like it went by so quickly lol.

Kenma’s point of view was sick! Like I love what they did there.

I'm so excited for the next one.

Since I got a notification for the discussion, I'm just gonna re-write my thoughts here:

I got to watch the Dumpster battle at the premiere day! (Warning: a little spoilers ahead) I could gush about Haikyuu all day because of how personable those characters feel to me (thanks to its great character writing) but I'll just keep this simple:

The movie was GREAT! | CRIED! ( the boy to my left was secretly weeping! As a manga reader the pacing didn't feel rushed to me, I guess it was fine, it's been a while since I read the manga tho, but honestly I always feel like the Karasuno vs Nekoma match would be great in a movie format AND IT DID! The director definitely did a good job and managed to sell the idea that this is a movie quality arc, the OSTs were great (they were always been) The flashbacks were REALLY GOOD and important to build up the tensions and everything. And as for the match it felt like I was watching an actual sport match.

I heard they make a lot of money out of this movie and I think they should definitely consider to make:
Fukurodani arc OVA and a Timeskip Season/2-3 OVA episodes becayse I feel like the next movie will only be about Karasuno vs Kamomedai. Overall it was 9/10 for me, insanely good and exciting! But the manga is still 10/10) The grip this series has for me is truly insane! Last but not least, I can't wait for more!
@StewieStew93
Oh bro same here lmao. When the spyair song played at the end I was weeping due to the nostalgia and the hour long emotional rollercoaster

It's a shame that we didn't get another TV season for this anticipated match, but a movie has it's perks as well. This awesome experience renewed my love for Haikyuu all over again.

Boring as hell.
๏ปฟ
๏ปฟWaited years for that, and it's just "kenma is saying 2 words per hour, let's not show any volleyball, let's put a lot of flashbacks".
๏ปฟ
๏ปฟComplete trash, an insult to the wait.
๏ปฟNot even finishing it, my made up stories are far better and intense then this shit.
๏ปฟNot to brag anyway: just a rolling ball on screen and there's more action then the first hour of "flashback in kenma's head".

This being a movie and having a runtime of only about 80 minutes, I knew what I was gonna get and was exactly right. Was still somewhat hopeful but nope.

The match was over before it even started and didn't have any weight/feel of being a knockout match at all. Way tame compared to even the previous season, not even gonna compare with the shiratorizawa match adaptation. Less focus on the match and way more focus on the internal monologues+flashbacks and Kenma. The match itself didn't really have any memorable/hype moments except for that one Hinata spike. Though the character models looked much more consistent given this was a movie with short runtime so they had more time and budget to work with. Quite underwhelming to say the least. Not really looking forward to the final movie much either.

Been a while since these chapters came out in the manga but I remember enjoying this match a lot and it having way more impact. Teared up at the handshake spread of the nekoma coach and the old karasuno coach. Was such a good scene.

Anyway atleast good to have more of Tanaka and Lev's sister, Saeko neesan and Alisa. Love em both. And ofc Shimizu san, the epitome of beauty. Bokuto, Kuroo and Tsukishima trio always amusing too.

Bothing to say, it was my favorite match in the manga and it's so emotionally shallow in this movie, the anime team definitely thought that diminishing other arcs would make the main one good when haikyu never relies on that

Peak movie. Maybe partly due to the intro, but it gave me the same feeling as watching Pokemon movies back then. Treated with a spectacular story and visuals while also feeling connected with the source material. And yes, I know this is a sequel and canon, but I was emphasizing on the feeling. A more apt comparison is Mugen Train, which while also being a sequel, just felt like a cash grab movie.

Anyway for the movie itself, I'd rather write a whole essay because I feel a single reply wouldn't capture my thoughts (most of which are praise) so there's that. I'll just say this though, Kenma's POV sequence marking the final moments of the game is honestly a cinematic masterpiece narrative-wise.

They butchered it, a 10 episode season like the one with shiratorizawa would have been a better option, I am glad I didn't waste my money watching it in theater.

It was seriously disappointing. I mean, I wasn't expecting anything after knowing they decided to continue this with movies.

Season 4 was significantly better, despite having slightly worse animation, but at least, the soundtracks, the direction, and a lot of other aspects of the anime are far better.

Also, I seriously didn't like the lack of focus on the sport itself, which is what I loved about Haikyuu too, this felt way too overdramatic, and lacked the focus on what made this anime good in the first place.

I'll be watching the final movie just to see how one of my favorite sports animes ends.

The movie was absolutely amazing, with beautiful animation and incredible storyboards. I had a really fun one and a half hour of fun with the movie now that it has been released on the market outside of theatres. The music was great as well as you'd expect from a Haikyuu movie. This match was hyped up really well and it delivered on almost all. I'm eagerly waiting for the next movie release as well. Can't wait for that one with the Little Giant.

Now, that the positives are out of the way, I want to express how much I'd have loved it if it was a seasonal release like the rest of the seasons, I know it is financially a great decision to do it as a movie but I couldn't help but find the movie too short. Like the match barely started and ended so quickly. Don't get me wrong, it was incredible but the pacing seemed way too fast and I think they must've skipped quite a lot knowing how many chapters were there to adapt in these two movies. So, I'll go and read the manga as well after finishing these movies to get all the tidbits that must've been skipped in the movies. But, aside from that, it was a really cool movie. I enjoyed it so fucking much.

Kenma was cool and Kuuro has been the coolest since the beginning. Hinata keeps on shining brightly and keeps on jumping higher, literally. LOL

It's a good movie but I'm still not pleased the final chunk of the series is getting screwed out of a full adaptation. This could've easily been another half hour and still just been this match. There's no good way they can cram the rest of the series into another movie

The dynamic and history between all the rivals on both teams and how each of them respect each other and get to bring out the best in one another for one last time was so incredibly satisfying to watch! Especially the banter between Kuro and Tsukki or the back and forth between Shoyo and Kenma were a real treat!! My favourite quote from the movie has gotta be "Excuse me! What's your #10's problem?!" xD

But my favorite part has gotta be Kenma admitting that their match is fun during the middle of the game. The fact that this moment was portrayed way more impactfully than Karasuno actually winning the last set speaks volumes! Shoyo didn't even realize that they won until Kageyama pointed it out lol, that's just how much fun he was having! It's like the goal wasn't even to win, but to make Kenma enjoy volleyball!!

While the way Nekoma lost was anticlimatic, it really goes to show that the focus of the movie wasn't about winning, but about the friends we made along the way... literally!! In fact each set ended kinda anticlimatic, with both Kenma and Shoyo being the ones to get the last points respectively in unorthodox ways lol

Also that last rallie was wild! Seeing it play out from Kenma's perspective in first person really shows how disorienting it can be to play as a setter! And Kenma smiling at the end there despite losing, really was the cherry on top!!

Also wdym the next game is only the quarter finals??? You are telling me we have 2 more games after that??????? This has gotta be the longest tournament arc in anime history lol!

Honestly, I'm quite baffled by the positive responses here.

There is no emotional depth, the characters are flat and partially just non-existing. There is no real tension, the music doesn't have its usual impact. This doesn't feel like Haikyuu at all. The only thing this movie has going for itself is its looks. The animation is stunning, the rest is lacking severely.

MY GOD THAT WAS SPECTACULAR! I’M SO GLAD THAT I WATCHED THIS!

There was a lot of symbolic representation in this movie (the crows, cats, and so on), and it fit so well, as well as a perfect blend between the flashbacks and the current action which allowed us to understand the feelings of Hinata, Kenma, and the rest. Everyone had their own personal battle and in the end, Kenma found his true love for volleyball, despite it ending with some sweat.

He really thought that he could lock Hinata up, but he doesn’t know how many times Hinata has been pushed down, so obviously Kageyama saw the opportunity and Hinata showed that he can truly fly. Now, will eh get to the point where he can fly without Kageyama as a crutch, or will they have to be an inseparable duo?

This next match will allow us to see who the really tiny giant is. Man that match was poetic, gruesome in some ways, and everything in between. LET’S GO! I can’t wait for more to come out!
