Matsui Rin finally got his work serialized in Jump. I liked some of his one-shots. Black Milk was a fun read. He is here with Dear Anemone and it was a really cool start. The art was awesome. I liked the premise too. Kinda reminded me of Jigokuraku. The character designs looked good. It ended with a big cliffhanger. Looking forward to more. Cautiously optimistic about it.

Last week I swore not to read any new wsj manga as it will just get axed anyway but here I am again, sigh. Why? Cause the artwork looked sick.

Anyway so a battle survival premise with horror and gore. There's some interesting elements, specially the world building and the artwork elevates it further. Character designs are good too, both the females look great and ofc Anemone too. Hoping for this to succeed but we'll see.

A lot of Hell's Paradise energy going on here. I liked it and dig the art style. I'm a little concerned that it just might not be suited for WSJ though

Nice to see someone take inspiration from Jigoraku to spice things up in the magazine. It'll be interesting to see where this is going

I really enjoyed this first chapter. The art is INCREDIBLE.

I definitely see the Jigokuraku comparisons everyone is making, but there is a pretty important distinction to be made. Dear Anemone is heavily themed around Darwinism and evolution, as opposed to Jigokuraku (Hell’s Paradise) which has different religious themes (in Taoism and Buddhism), so in that sense they are also quite opposite to each other.

Gaku’s little backstory with his friend Yoshio was so sweet. Kinda sad that Ryuichi is gone already, his personality was entertaining. I have a feeling Hairo is going to be an important character. Really curious to find out what exactly the government is planning, knowingly sending these people in as sacrifices.
The little nod/homage to MHA was a nice touch as well.

Looking forward to future chapters!!

Are we finally back to a dark edgy era for Jump? Cause I'm all for it. I am intrigued by the first chapter but I really need to see what direction the story tries to go in. Reminded me a bit of Jinmen with all the freaky animal designs. The art gives off somewhat similar vibes to Gachiakuta. Ok, bring it on, let's see what this manga has in store for us. Is it gonna deliver or is it gonna sink like most of the new Jump stuff.

Never thought I would see something like this in Jump. Everything looks good except for character design (they all look same)

Hope it doesn't get axed. I really need a good survival series on par with battle royale and cage of Eden atleast

This chapter was pretty good. It reminded me of Hell's Paradise with the mysterious island and stuff. I think the character art needs a bit more work but the backgrounds and the creature designs are great. Looking forward to the next chapter.

I was ready to dunk on this for being similar to fab 100 on first impression but this was actually a great first chapter. It does not feel like a jump series but I like the horror vibes the art has. I am genuinely excited to see where this goes and how it plays with the evolution of different animals.

It's been said over and over but yea there are heavy Hell's Paradise vibes from this one: the island being described as "both paradise and hell," the fact that a group of people are being sent to a mysterious island, and the anemone at the end looked like the Lord Tensen from HP. Seems interesting so far and feels like something fresh for WSJ, hope it doesn't get axed.

It doesn't really suit Weekly Jump, but not a bad one for sure. It reminds me of Wild Strawberry, but it's definitely much better.
I don't get why many people say "oh, it's getting axed" to every single new manga, even though they have great potential, including this one.

God I despise this depiction of evolution as something that happens to a single specimen over a course of their lifetime. I know that this is fiction, and the idea of rapid intelligent mutations is fun to play with, but because of these depictions so many people proceed to have misconceptions on how evolution works and honestly it's so tiring

Also getting strong "Annihilation" flashbacks

I guess according to MAL users anything with a monster island is just hells paradise and anything with plant monsters is just wild strawberry

I thought it was a fun chapter, nothing amazing so far, some of the art is wonky and pacing is interesting but interested to see where it goes.

Everything is nice and all but WTF Japan government is doing 13524 km/8403 miles away from their country?!
I hope it will be plot point

Overall interesting beginning, it's kinda hard to praise anything than art right now but story seems promising.
Manga recommendation:
- Spy x Family (Ch.109/? - biweekly) | Sakamoto Days (Ch.198/? - weekly)
- MARRIAGETOXIN (Ch.114/? - weekly) | Machi and Oboro (Ch.19/? - biweekly)
- Make the Exorcist Fall in Love (Ch.82/? - biweekly)
- Monochrome Days (Ch.11/? - biweekly)
Anime recommendation:
- Deca-Dence (Finished) | Wave, Listen to Me! (Finished)
- If My Favorite Pop Idol Made It to the Budokan, I Would Die (Finished)
- Diary of Our Days at the Breakwater (Finished)

This quite literally is just Hell's Paradise mixed with Wild Strawberry, but if every character looked exactly the same. Seriously. The only one of the 4 on the island we were introduced to that had a recognizable character design was the dude who got his head unceremoniously ripped off because "oooh shocking". I had to reread pages multiple times to tell who the hell was doing what.

Definitely the weakest debut chapter I've read since starting to read every new manga on the Jump app.

I really fw the fact its tied into Darwin and the Galapagos islands rather than some fictional place. Taking a person, place, and theory that most people have been taught about, whether they remember it or not, and giving it a supernatural spin is really cool to see. (Don't come at me if this is super common I'm not a manga snob) Before they revealed they were headed to the Galapagos and mentioned Darwin I sat there and said to myself this sounds like Darwin and his journey then turned to the next page and bang the Galapagos islands. I'm not even into science like that but it still gave the first chapter that edge that makes me wanna read more.

The way the ending of the chapter goes, it seems like it will continue in an action direction from here? Kind of a shame because a straight horror series would have been kind of fun. The art is obviously great but so is Wild Strawberry and that one’s plot has fallen off. I feel like I need more convincing here than just the art.

@madarchod my thoughts exactly. The character designs are too similar so it gets confusing in action panels.

An amazing first chapter I might say so myself but I hope the quality in writing and character itself will evolve into a beast of it's own just like the art. I reminisced over the part where Raku rushed in to save his peer with the early parts of MHA, and Deku feeling a sense of responsibility. However whilst the art is dark and gritty having a central theme focussed on simply courage and such change is too miniscule I might say so. The characters also kinda don't look their age, like at all, might be an art style thing but just wanted to put that out there. Named characters dying in chapter 1 is definitely something new, I hope it bears some significance and wasn't simply used for shock value.

Okay start. Agree with some of the other comments here, best strength is defo it's art, but it is hard to tell who's doing what.
Agree it probably wasn't the best fit for WSJ, this probably would've got a longer more successful run on Jump+ or something else more lax and monthly.
Although I'm sure we will see this mangaka serialise again somewhere and the experience from WSJ will likely be invaluable!
