It looks like Elise has a desire to be a doctor than some loyal empress in that world. Not only is that her passion but also to avoid a supposingly tragic fate for her character.

I think this episode establishes her as someone with an open mind and wanting to follow her dreams, instead of going with what may be handed to her. Plus, she even had the guts to break off an engagement so that really shows he's not afraid to speak her mind. An interesting character development for our main female portagonist.

Gotta say, Marie is hands down the best girl in the show.

In an effort to avoid the tragedies befalling those around her, Elise decides to annul her engagement with Prince Linden de Romanoff. She confesses to His Majesty the Minster and Prince Linden, that she dosen't want to become a queen, and that she wasnt's to be a doctor. However, her plea is not readily accepted. And then, Elise finds herself presented with a challenging gamble by the king.

Becoming a doctor in this world won't be easy for Elise, that's for sure.

Ooh yes I love the breaking engagement scent. Elise is gonna be the best doctor in this empire, she doesn't need any man to waste her precious time. She will use that time to save people lives instead, because that's what the very best doctor would do.

I was somehow able to predict that Elise would call of the engagement and linden would end up falling in love with her as she begins to mend herself.

And I was completely right 😂😂

I’m excited to see more of this I loved tearmoon empire and this is very similar

@zitzil She was known as one of the best surgeons in the modern world. She was famous for treating people who were un-treatable. I think her issues will be dealing with medieval protocol of health, that might go against modern standards...Saving lives won't be an issue for her its how she does it that will.

Part of this series gives me strong Erased vibes mixed with from Villainess to Saviour and art style resembling Mushikaburi-hime xD

I like it.

Now after listening to this OST again it's no wonder Elise's internal monologue narration reminds me of Satoru from Erased

@Phantom_373

Totally agree with the tearmoon empire comparison. Many of the same vibes, except this protagonist got a bonus lifetime of becoming a surgeon before being sent back for a second chance. (But obviously, this show treats the material with a more seriously tone, whereas tearmoon was undoubtedly comedic and irreverent.)

This show is pretty charming so far. Not too heavy but treats the premise seriously. And I like the fact that they used the whole first episode to set up her life/character in the modern world; it really helps establish why she is acting the way she is now and especially in contrast to her flashbacks. A fun addition to the winter season.

Another really good episode! The obvious comparison here is to tearmoon empire with how Elise was kind of an asshole in her past life. The biggest difference being that time in Korea(Japan in the anime) in her additional life, plus this one is more serious in tone which I like more tbh.

Learning that her whole family got wiped out in the previous life was wild. Her brother in combat, and then the others for their association with her. No wonder she was so emotional seeing her family when she reincarnated for the second time.

Elise putting together all that knowledge from her time on Earth during the meeting with the king. Diagnosing him with diabetes and explaining the tactical difficulties of the upcoming military campaign. Everyone being blown away by her knowledge was funny.

Wasn’t expecting her to go full dogeza to get out of the engagement. She actually kinda hurt her case by providing all that valuable information to the king. You can’t just give all that military and political knowledge away for free and expect them to let you not become empress 😂. She sounds like the perfect place to be the future leader.

This gamble is going to be fun to see play out. 6 months to ace the doctor’s exams and show the king that she’s more valuable as a doctor than a leader.. interesting conflict.

The irony of it all is that she’s still not really taking everyone’s feelings into consideration which was her pitfall in her first life. She’s not considered that maybe the prince loves her for her and wants to be with her…

I’m excited for what’s next

back to her previous life, now with superior knowledge about the future events and medicine, as well as maturity from the extra years she lived, time to tackle all her problems one by one

starting by making that list of future events, from thousands of people dying in an ambush to many more thousands dying to illness, she is the key to save as many people as she can before her life ends

- 1st, telling her family and servants that she likes them and do her best to make them like her, we saw the little maid crying from just a little praise lol
- 2nd thing is to tell the king to be careful about that ambush that killed her brother, which seems to have been taken seriously
- 3rd thing, the king's health, a case of diabetes, let's trust his medic knows how to treat him, we don't want him dying so soon, it was a big shock in the previous timeline
- 4th, making it known that she doesn't want to marry, but instead be a medic, she has 6 months to prepare to the exam (tho she probably already knows a good part of it)
- seems like the prince might actually want to marry her, even tho in the other life he didn't seem that happy...

now i'm curious, will she still be both an empress and a medic? or is it impossible to focus on both? well, only time will tell
don't miss the next episode, because we won't either

So, we've finished episode 2 of 12, and the real story still hasn't begun - we are STILL in heavy-handed exposition. If this was a 2-cour conversion, I would merely sigh, but since it is not, I am seriously annoyed what the hell they are doing with one of my most beloved mangas.

I guess I will just pretend that episodes 1+2 don't exist and see if episodes 3+ lighten my mood.

Alright, I absolutely hated the first episode, but this changed my mind tbh. I was pleasantly surprised by this episode. Although, its still annoying that she did all those miracles in her previous life and was ultimately a surgeon, but now she wants to be a GP? You don't have the qualifications lol 6 months to become a doctor is crazy. The prince is starting to fall for Elise and he's so damn fine too sheesh. It seems like she was annoying af in her original life. She had a behind the scenes character development arc

Better episode than the first.
I actually like JP Dub. It's more suited to this story.
It's not that I dislike this genre but... to add unnecessary fan services to/in/for heroines
and ultimately destroys her character and personality; their purity tarnished because of it,
is the only thing I hope to not happen to them. For that sole purity is my fan service.

I liked this episode a little more than the first one. Some things that were well done: it’s good Elise wrote down the main events of this life if she wants to prevent a bad outcome like last time (or even to just see where she is at). And I also appreciate how they actually tell how she used to be in contrast to her life as a doctor. Although I hope we actually get to see it to make the impact of her change even stronger (and not just telling by having other characters act surprised at her actions now and their expectations like the maid when Elise said Thank you). So I hope for some flashbacks where we see mean, vile Elise in action.

Now to the points I didn’t like: it’s cute she has an owl (I thought that the first time too) but I’m also bothered by this for the same reason: because it’s not a pet and this cage is WAY TOO small. Also I know it was supposed to be a big moment when she started to realize she wants to become a doctor again in this life but I feel like the cause of it (having her maid cut her finger and linking it to the time she saved someone’s life with a surgery and the daughter thanked her later which are on entirely different levels) made it seem lackluster and the impact is not as strong as if they would have used any other event causing this (or even having a train of thought more connected to her life before). So far it’s also difficult to see what went wrong the first time she was Elise (which of course makes perfect sense we don’ get all the facts right from the start) but given she realized she made a mistake you would think she knew and she could simply avoid it (she has a different motive and I’d normally respect that but I will get to this). I totally get the intention of it but it’s delivered in a way that’s strange. It also doesn’t help that I kind of can predict most of the plot after the first 5 minutes.

Another problem I have with Elise is connected to her motives. Why I think that from her point of view it’s better to call off the engagement (and even selfless considering it’s what she wanted before but since she said it’s because Linden doesn’t want it she will walk a different path). While there is nothing wrong with that (setting a person free when they don’t reciprocate your feelings IS the right thing to do) I feel like out connection to any of the characters isn’t strong enough to really care about that at this point? At least for me it’s the case. That’s why I feel everything that happened in this episode kind of felt rushed. I get you want to move into the main plot as quickly as possible but establish and setting characters first is vital. And you don’t necessarily have them interacting with each other in order to do that. Show them separately and give the audience some time to build a certain connection to them. Before making decisions to “change” something entirely when for the people watching this it’s like… “Yeah, however...”. This is the second episode feeling like the first episode but also like the first third of the season (if that makes sense?). It’s also very noble that Elise wants to become a doctor again but it kind of seems like her only motivation is to safe as many lives as possible. Which don’t get me wrong… it’s absolutely noble to do that but it makes it come off as not very genuine. Same with her humility when she bowed to the emperor. It’s hard to explain… But maybe I can put it this way… If you write characters and give them a noble motivation/strive to do something it’s great but you also have to mix this with a distinguished personality, establishing their own wishes for themselves. Because then when they strive towards reaching their goal it’s even more beautiful to see when they have to sacrifice certain things in order to accomplish them or they still get to care about things such as finding love or forming close bonds. I’m not saying Elise won’t have this since this anime just started. All I’m saying is that it’s the first impression we get of her and she already comes off as a forcefully selfless written character. It also didn’t help she diagnosed the emperor’s health problem so quickly in her head. Even if she has experience as a doctor I feel it’s stretched and it doesn’t do the story any good jumping in like this. But I hope I’m wrong and her character will still be established more dimensional. My reason for feeling this way is also due to the bet they made about her passing the exam to become doctor and if she doesn’t manage she’s going to get married to Linden. Wow, how threateningly romantic! What a punishment for losing a bet. It’s just a strange way to introduce a plot in my opinion…

Now to our male main character Linden… I don’t have much to say about him (not yet since we haven’t seen a lot of him even while he was there). But I’m just wondering if we only mostly get carbon copies for male main characters these days? Sometimes it feels like someone just sat down, wrote one character and sold it to multiple writers to use as male MC because they are not that important anyway (unlike the female MC who’s so superior to anyone else I’m surprised they don’t write a romance about her dating and marrying herself). I’m willing to give him a fair chance to prove me wrong but I don’t really have my hopes up high (judging based on my first impression).

I’m not really a fan of the animation to be honest… But since I don’t want to end this comment on a negative note I’ve gotta admit that the opening theme already grew on me and generally I like the music so far.

As for the episode itself:

6 months to become a doctor sounds a little unreasonable, even in 19th century (?) Europe. Maybe Elise thinks she can make it because she's already been a surgeon, but the other guys don't know that and are still proposing this bet?

Also, a bratty princess suddenly dropping insightful military and medical advice was taken surprisingly well by everyone. I was expecting Elise to struggle more to come up with a decent excuse, but I guess that wasn't necessary.

@amlg I kinda get the feeling that it's not that the prince never liked her but probably sucked at showing her/she was a bit much on the affection side for him. Probably if she'd just chilled out a little all would have been good. For the king to give her so many chances/vouch for her he must have seen something good in her, especially since the prince didn't seem to be actively fighting the engagement.

I'm liking this so far! The only thing is I feel like the personality change is a bit too much of a 180° from how they've described her pervious self. It's understandable to me that she's a way better person and wants to save people but I guess I find it a little strange that she doesn't even have remnants of smth like a selfish thought or haughtiness from her former life. Idk that's really a nitpick tho.

Alright, I liked the 2nd ep way better than the 1st ep. Also that sequence at the end where she says "Goodbye" to the prince as he walks on ahead of her-- and how she stated that she truly did love him....etc, etc, etc
for some reason that HIT ME RIGHT IN THE FEELS....even though it's only the second ep so it can only get better (hopefully) from here...

anyway, excuse me cuz I think there's something in my eye...

EDIT: as I side note, I'm also feel slightly ashamed (partially dumbfounded too) that I couldn't figure out those were symptoms of Diabetes considering someone close to me suffers from it too and has had those symptoms before.

It's kinda shocking to me how poorly japanese people understand western monarchy. It's like they've never seen shows like The Borga, the Tudors, Reign or any british movie that touches the subject. It's so evident how they don't get what KIND of pride christian nobility has/had. What it MEANS to be noble or royal. They romanticize it to a point where it's barely reconizeable. If it wasn't for the vague european aesthetics one could NEVER say these people are supposed to be western royalty

I am actually wondering if she's going to be like that other pharmacy series and start to invent bunch of medical tools and instruments, LOL

Also... why did she act like she doesn't know the name of King's illness? Or do they have a different name for each illness that's different from Japan/ Earth. Maybe... but if so...

Doesn't that mean this is a HUGE PLOT HOLE in her taking the exam? cause they'll have different Medical Terminologies from Earth...

Meaning, if it's different and she has never learned the medical terminologies on OG-world, she'll have a hard time connecting which is which to Earth's terminologies since they'll have different names...

But then again... this is probably going to end up the same as all other Isekai anime series where all language of ANY WORLD are all Japanese, LOL.

Elise coming back to her own world, she's just glad to see her family again...and also, her birthday celebration and marriage betrothal to the Crown Prince Linden, which she must try to understand and not make his life hard the second time.

Dating the events of her remembrance in her past life, there's just too many elements involving medicine that she could not do, that eventually led to her downfall as a villainess that affected her entire Clorence family as well. This time, Elise is determined to make a difference, starting with her personal maid Mary, then bringing it directly to the king...if not for the crown prince himself, which she treated him harshly before. But armed with the information of the future, there is a worry about revealing this intel, which Elise makes this the truth to be heard as an advisory counsel, even on a medical level to appease his diabetic illness.

The most important thing to get out of the way: the marriage betrothal, which Elise sees herself unfit for the position, which the Kusef king notices, and makes a wager of Elise becoming a doctor, if not going back to becoming their empress, in a gamble over the next 6 months. Of course, Linden questions Elise, but her heart remains strong despite giving trouble to him when they were young, and sure, he is angry that Elise annulled their engagement, but this is for the best.

This is becoming a lot like Isekai Yakkyoku, which isn't a bad thing.

this premise is very interesting to me!! yeah these first two eps were very exposition heavy, but it seemed necessary, and hopefully will make things flow smoother later on. I've just accepted that this is a fantasy version of western nobility, where women get invited to meetings and people listen to their opinions 😅 It's funny how, even before her reincarnation, Elise seems to have been bffs with the King?

as others have said, I'm sure she'll be thrilled to be placed in a hospital! I only wonder how much of an issue her modern medical knowledge will cause. I feel like if this were real historical Europe, her best bet would be faking divine intervention. like, "oh, uhh...we have to wash our hands and sterilize our tools because, uh, God told me to! yeah! straight from the big guy, what are you gonna do? haha 🤷🏻‍♀️" and then when she was always right, everyone would be like, "Well, I guess we can't argue with God..."

This is perhaps incredibly shallow of me, but I'm very bothered by Elise's design, especially her hair...why does she have that headband on, why is there exactly one stand of hair sticking out in the middle of her forehead?? ah, well, there are many things about anime aesthetics that I will likely never understand...

I really enjoyed how they seem to be fleshing out the prince more. In the beginning of the comic it was always very hard to like him so having this is really nice. However I don't understand the guard. Sure, he was there in the comic but he wasn't a noticeable presence. I wonder what they plan to do with him to warrant expanding his lines and time on screen.

Im kind of in between what Elise should be her being the Queen actually can help a lot with her knowledge of the world. She knew a lot of what gonna happen and how to stop it and with that she knew a lot of new things from current world and most of them can help to make a country safer and better. Which is make me think if she doing the right think.

Im interested to see how she gonna react to old time medicine which is let say interesting at the least
