Saw the premiere at AX. I'm surprised that they showed the premiere for a fall show so early. It was mentioned before the screening that the staff worked very hard get the first episode ready for AX, so I was very appreciative to be able to watch it. As for the episode, I enjoyed it quite a lot. It seemed like a realistic take on firefighting, and the characters seemed good as well. I'm probably going to be watching it when it comes out.

The anime adaptation of mangaka Masahito Soda's Megumi no Daigo a.k.a Firefighter Daigo sequel series: Kyuukoku no Orange, you need not watch Sunrise's 1999 movie for it, being the one close (but not accurate) adaptation that is only a blimp of the prequel manga, Fire Company M. You can watch this without any prior know-how to the OG manga, but be warned that it is 20 volumes long and being a remnant of the late 90s.

Kanjani Eight's OP (which is composed by Tatsuya Kitani), it's fine. I wasn't expecting LMYK's ED here, which is a smooth song that just exhibits the early 2000s feel.

When it comes to AniManga focusing on firefighting, mangaka Atsushi Ohkubo's Enen no Shouboutai a.k.a Fire Force comes to mind. But this series gpes back to the realism of real-life firefighting, no magic nor fantasy elements like that. But that's not the case with this show, where actual firefighting is done from the perspectives of fire sergeants Daigo Toake and Shun Onoda.

Going back to where it all started, Onoda fought his way to becoming a fire officer, but at 19 years of age, he's already dredging his life through for the tests and trainings over and over again. His companions of similar-aged Yuki Nakamura and Daigo Toake are more fired up than what Shun had being gruelled for the special rescue ops squad with the trainings from hell. Sure, their fire chief, 35-year-old Kyosuke Yamagami is a tough trainer, though Daigo's conversation with him, Shun can only speculate that he has a weakness for something.

Sure, the OG manga released in 1998 and the sequel is released in 2020, but Brain's Base nailed the late 90s, early 2000s aesthetic. A decent show for now.

@KANLen09, yes, Daigo Asahina appears in the manga as well.

Apologized for my lame jokes but this anime is so HOT!, the squad is on FIRE! I have a uniform fetish so I alreay have high expectation but the first episode ignites my HEAT!

Now let's get serious, I just notice that the manga only start 3 years ago with only 7 volumes so far, not enough material for 25 episodes anime adaptation right? That leads me to think that they'll use a lot of material from the prequel manga, probably as frequent flashbackes or dedicate as the whole arc. So if my assumption is true, not only it's fine to skip the prequel manga, the anime committee actually encourage new people to start with this anime as "the right way" to watch this series.

I'm wondering what event that lead to a large Tokyo firestorm in the beginning, my guess is earthquake (which would replicate the 1923 Great Kantō earthquake event).

I was a huge fan of the original Megumi no Daigo manga which still is one of my favorite shounen manga I have ever read but I did not read this version yet so I wasn't sure if this was going to be close to that level, be pure awful or just right in the middle. The actual episode looked and felt stiff but the stuff in it wasn't too shabby. The first few minutes were good and with better production, could've been great. Rest of the episode was fine but felt like the premiere barely scratched the surface with the series besides showing how brutal training was there and how emotionally composed the firefighters in training have to be when on the field whilst doing incredibly risky actions to save lives since they are working to help people and a big part of that is to reassure that everything will be fine and not cause further stress for victims. Got to see Shun have some sort of inferiority complex to Daigo and with the cliffhanger, Daigo just pushing him off by saying they weren't friends then was kind of refreshing given how Shun just went at him with questions about the truth when they were not like that. It was indicated in the future though that Daigo was glad to have Shun as his partner so it will be interesting see how much they do grow together with their bonds throughout the series. Not too much but hopefully with the upcoming episodes, the characters would show more development and depth to them.

The art is a bit disappointing. I haven't seen what the new manga's art looks like since I have only read the original manga but that had so much personality and nostalgia with the designs and making such daring situations feel super exciting and hype page by page. This did feel flat to watch with the stiff animation at times and the characters and expressions looking flat overall. Also, Daigo Asahina had more charisma in his right pinkie than everyone collectively did in this premiere. It's not just the fault of this version of the series, but Daigo Asahina in the original manga is just that awesome. Toake felt more flat in comparison but again, still way too early to properly judge his character and others yet.

At least I enjoyed this episode more than a majority of Fire Force, and that was the firefighting anime with much more focus on the animation too. I do appreciate not seeing dumb superpowers and focusing on the actual daring acts and intense training these firefighters go through to do what they are expected to do without powers helping them. Overall, it was okay. Hopefully the upcoming episodes can build this series up to be better than my concerned expectations I have had for it.

It's been a while we got a Fire Fighter anime that is not based in fantasy like Fire Force and as someone who watches firefighter shows like Rescue Me and recently the 9-1-1 series, this has really got my attention. I always wanted to see the Japanese fire fighters in action and what their daily routines are outside of emergency situations. Like Police in a Pod this series seems to revolve around three promising new firefighter recruits in Daigo, Shun, and Yuki going back to when they first arrived at the academy a year ago undergoing intense daily training. The series makes subtle references to the prequel manga which is not a requirement to watch this anime. I'm also wondering what caused Tokyo to be on fire in the opening scene, its probably the result of a massive earthquake.

I liked the first episode, but they really went a big WHAT IF with all Tokyo on fire there o.O

This will most likely be very hidden gem this season. I remember that i was going to read old manga, because this is somewhat of a sequel, i believe the protagonist is son of the first manga protagonist?

Loved the ED theme.

but after watching the movie then the first episode of the anime, Megumi no Daigo: Kyuukoku no Orange feels like a remake not a sequel. i hope you enjoy the movie anyway if u decided to watch it. it was enjoyable despite the old animation

I quite liked the bits with the POV MC. I did get that "Already reached the limit but can't quit' feeling that he was exuding. And having him be the POV to the titular MC and the female MC did help set those 2 up as big-deal characters.
But I might've set my expectations high for its animation just based on the trailer and the cover. My fault though. It's still fine but, I often got confused with the 2 MCs, with their eyes being the only distinguishable spots, especially when they were wearing the firemen suits. But even in the OP sequence everyone quite looked the same.

This looks good.

The apolyptic beginning was quite dissonant with the rest of the episode. Felt like a transition or something of the likes was missing there.

Also, who the fuck cares about smiling when your team member could be in lethal danger..?

So far I do like Daigo, potential MC? Maybe this anime will have multiple MC's though

Liked it. (^_^)

The complete oppiste of MF Ghost: first you show the main interest of the series (rescuing), then the characters, then the woman who's here as an equal.
Ofc the women was forced (stronger than everybody except the MC ... please, put some work into it, plot armor isn't a good way to make a viewer like a character) but at least she's not a frustrated virgin cliche.

So yeah, I like this rewriting of Daigo, really loved the manga (and the drama and the OAV, even if they were ... what they were) back in the day. :O

Many Square Enix works attack the hero figure. I see firefighters, nurses, doctors and police officers as heroic figures, so I don't like titles like "I was kicked out of the hero's team" and things like that, which don't dignify the heroic figure, who is real. Heroes exist. And I am very happy when I see works that do justice to this personality that is not fictional. And, for that reason, I already loved this work and Freiren. These are works that magnify the heroic figure.

The whole setting feels like a sports anime. Reminds me a lot of Gunjou no Fanfare, which had very similar characters, also set in an elite school for it's unique theme. And I really loved it before they completly messed it up with the pacing!

Additionally, I believe fire department has more potential for a thrilling story than (High School) sports.

Very promising so far!

Not gonna watch/read the old stuff. This series seems okay - so far. First part where they tried to bait the viewers ... felt a bit too much for me though. Seemed almot like a terrorist attack lol.

Should have actually started with the training and there maybe even a bit slower and in the past where the one guy applied. Telling from the point of view of that guy (Shun) seems okay though.

I wonder if Daigo got rescued as a kid - and then decided to join the firefighters ... with the teacher guy that recognized him ... being the one that rescued him. Female char seemed interesting - still a bit unsure though. Daigo does not seem interesting yet. And feels more a bit annoying. (Which he later might be as well - the scene at the beginning that was in the future ... did not like him that much there.)

I guess the female char (need to seed a bit more with focus on her) will decide whether I continue this or not.

I want to know what the hell happened to cause the fire to become so severe at the beginning of the episode.

I absolutely enjoy animes that focus on one specific occupation. Also, having Kenjirou Tsuda as a narrator just makes this anime even better lol

Good for a first episode. The show introduced the life and death stake pretty well, with some world building. It does have this old school feel to the anime with the super heroic & stoic MC, burning with heroism. The character design & storytelling also has that feel to it, which is not necessary a bad thing.

Big effing MEH.

I was expecting an actual drama about the people saving lives on fire breakouts, not a stupid over the top shonen BS.

The amount of time it took for Daigo to pass over the victim in his arms was long enough to order a pizza and have it delivered. IRL firefighters don't have this almost "turn based" lapses and they act on instinct and most of all training.

The other half with Shun being nagged on by his drill instructor because his stupid uniform wasn't perfectly ironed it's borderline 3tard3d. Nobody is going to complain at the firefighters that are trying to save lives and propierties if they uniforms arn't perfectly ironed, and it's also a stupid uniform that's bound to get dirty and filled with sweat while performing drills.

Worst of all, the need to shove in a stupid narrator to explain everything as if the intended audience is expected to be a 5 year old. Come on... stupid directors should watch western action/dramas like Chicago Fire to understand how to aproach an audience without the need to mansplain stupid details about firefighters.

Dropped like a bag of bad potatoes.
