At least I have some trouble remembering character names when what they say is different from what is written -- ESPECIALLY for minor characters. Do you prefer the way it is now?

I always prefer the japanese way in anime. If we look back a few seasons to Paripi Koumei, I didn't really like Koumei being called Kongming, but I guess that's just preference.

This happened when I was watching Kingdom. I remember their Chinese name but now I see their Japanese name on screen.

It isn't just preference but in fact, the coŕrect way to display the character name. Kongming is originally a Chinese and it's a must that his name is displayed as Kongming in every language subtitles except Japanese. Now imagine they keep the Japanese spelling pronunciation, we will have "Berutoruto Fuubaa" instead of "Bertolt Hoover". Do you think you'll still like it?

I know that since it's chinese, it's supposed to be written that way but I like to have what I hear in my subs, you know? I don't hear Liu Shouxue (mostly since I don't know chinese), instead I hear Ryu Juusetsu. With Bertolt Hoover (or Berutoruto Fuubaa) as an example, the name is easy to understand, therefore I hear the correct name. But I definitely wouldn't be against the version with just romaji, hell I'd even wanna watch it, if it exists.

To sum it up: some people prefer it this way, some people prefer it that way. I agree with the fact that the version I prefer is "wrong", but I still like it more.

I think ... it depends: The chinese names are pretty hard to get used to - when you only watch japanese stuff with japanese names most of the time. Cause they are pronounced in a totally different way. There were anime like Ikki Tousen where they named the main chars after chinese people ... but the anime uses japanified names instead of the original chinese names. And therefore has subs that sound like the stuff that is spoken. Imo a lot better. Unless you want to have something totally historical (for Kingdom I think I can get used to it since it is based on real historical chinese stuff).

For Shouxue I never would have guessed that this is spoken like the japanese "Jusetsu" - would have expected more something like "Shushu" but I do not know anything about Chinese pronounciation. Though this would be japanified version of the name - to pronounce it that way. (Similar to the Berutoruto Fuuba But that one sounds at least similar to the written western word..)

It certainly is confusing - cause it makes the stuff harder to remember/understand when you need to focus a lot more on subtitles because of this. Meaning: Less enjoyment when watching. I wonder how people are handling this when they completely localize names in a dubbed version. I know we had that one horrible incident with the lawyer anime (Phoenix Wright or something like that - don't remember the name) ... where in the west some games already were well known. Where the anime used japanese names and the subtitle used totally different names - cause the games had westernized the names and changed them to sound not Japanese anymore. That was so consusing that this was the main reason I dropped the anime early.

From preference to speakeasy, it's always difficult choosing which source to trust. But then again, there are fery few works that have Chinese influences (e.g. Kingdom) that I would rather just prefer seeing their Chinese names as opposed to hearing the Japanese translations, but it's a pain for everybody else in the West who are not used to how things work in Asia.

So far in the dubbed version they've used the Chinese names while speaking and the written names have no subs. So I guess it makes it simpler since there's no dissonance but also there being no subs for the writing is irritating

I love this show but it would help me immensely if the names in the subtitles were phonetically the same as how they are pronounced by the voice actors.

I just want voice acting and subs to be consistent.

Yeah, it can be quite a struggle with titles centred around Chinese history. I still remember in Souten Kurou it took me quite a while to equate "Cao Cao" with the character beind adressed as "Sousou".
