I don't know if you're aware, but reacting to the reviews you don't like with the "confusing" reaction just gives the review more visibility since the one with the most reactions is the one that appears first even if it's 80% confusing/20% good (perfect system ikr)

Both of the first two reviews are from popular reviewers, even if the system wasn´t like now it is, they would have upvoted due to popularity

When it comes to MAL, negative reviews invariably rise to the top. It's kind of a rat race and Negativity and inflammatory takes are a sure way to stand out.

Some people feel that the entire system is broken because of this. I don't have any good solutions to put forward and at this point it kind of is what it is. I personally just don't look at top reviews and would recommend you do so as well.

Afterall, if you like the series who cares what anyone else thinks?

Well, apparently lots of people do care. They are really butthurt about it after all. I totally get the logic behind Gween_Gween's review, but damn, these butthurt people just don't like it whatsoever. More proof of MAL's clownery of a review system.

After reading it, it seems to be a solid and valid review that critique the anime in a way that can still appeal some people to watch the anime

"Do It Yourself is one of the most disappointing anime of this season." I mean, no one had high expectations to begin with since it was relatively unknown until it came out. I think this reviewer might need to lower their expectations when coming to a CDGCT anime original that is still very much in its introductory phase.

Their criticism does make sense. It’s not like we haven’t seen this kind of anime. Also, to me personally I don’t find the art style appealing.

I do feel like they wrote their reviews early which is kinda stupid since it’s only 3 episodes with not much happening yet. We’ve seen anime take really different route then what they started.

Also, they might have done so to get people’s attention since if the anime isn’t done there’s people complaining about low score review already out.

Imagine having high expectations for a CGDCT woodworking anime to turn into a complex pseudo-philosophical series about technological advancement.

So I read through Gween_Gween’s review and I think the part about the characters is too soon to judge. Once the other two girls from the op join we’ll have a better idea of each character’s growth, especially with Serufu once her childhood friend Purin joins. Either way if someone wants to do an in depth analysis of a cgdct show than go right ahead. For me it’s just lighthearted fun.

Let's face it, MAL is good for keeping track of your shows and to argue about pointless shit, it's fucking useless for ratings, reviews, etc.
If you reply back to me and I never respond, I lost interest and don't care. Sorry about that.

The reviews that are written first, are upvoted the most, because almost nobody cares for reading any other than the three top and earliest reviews.
It's what it is, but it's dumb.

They might be popular inside their homes. They have like 3-4 "nice" upvotes only out of like 60, OP has a point with the current system being (even more) garbage.

I think most of you miss my point, people can write whatever they want about the show, everyone has their opinion

my problem is that this is the top review (the 2nd has the same ratio)

https://imgur.com/a/rA0LS2E

and this one the 3rd one

https://imgur.com/a/Se1A3sU

basically people use the confused emote as a downvote but all it does is giving the review more attention because lol

tell me if i'm wrong, but aren't review suppose to be something you write AFTER the anime finished, like you can't review a restaurant just because you walk by it, same thing with novel reviewer, i never saw someone review novel after they read the first chapter, so why should i listen to someone who write a complain after watching not even half of the anime episodes

It's not that difficult if a system designer would give it a thought. Since each "reaction" is a different category, they could be divided as such. (show only confusing or show only well written, etc)
Each reaction could have a score value behind it, perhaps a thumbs up is +1 point and confusing is -0.5 points etc.
If all reactions have same value then indeed, the system is broken, or if review is only a popularity contest (as it seems to be due to this broken system) then I do the same as you - i've stopped reading most of the reviews.

Indeed. I agree. Technically what we see are "first impressions". If i'm not mistaken, in the past you were not able to even write a review if you had not seen at least half of the series' episodes.

Me too. Personally I really like it. It's suprisingly wholesome and it's cool to see girls doing awesome stuff, chill to watch. Setup is also nice (futuristic manufacturing vs DIY).

Preliminary reviews make sense, the only thing that will change overtime is the character's and the story's progress, but you can criticize the stylistic decisions and fundamentals, such as how they present the characters or how they solve the scenes. Blame MAL for making the preliminaries threshold 3 episodes, which is particularly dumb as it is not the end of the first segment of the series so you can't tell how they conclude an arc. Sadly, the MAL system is a race, I pushed for changes, but some reviewer did a 10-paragraph long letter explaining how not sorting by reactions would ruin his life, isn't that cute?

Reading the MAL reviews is usually such an experience...
How pretentious or self absorbed "critic" you have to be to write the stuff that they do sometimes lol, it's appaling to me
Almost everytime you see a 2/10, 3/10 review, it's time to make popcorn cus you know it will be a wild ride to read that lmao
I still remember that one Akebi-Chan review, i laughed so hard i was crying at what that dude deducted from seeing 4 or 5 episodes
Hilarious
It's a CGDCT, Iyashikei, comedy anime, not quantum physics...there's no need to go that deep
Just make a nice cup of coffee or tea and enjoy the girls goofing around
This and Bocchi the Rock are my highlights this season for sure

The only thing I can say is at least the reviews say "preliminary." I feel I'd have chosen a stronger word, but hopefully that bold, colorful text has some sort of impact on any innocent bystanders just trying to get a feel for if they should check the series out. It's one thing to rate a series as you're watching it, but I really hate when people post full-on reviews, especially one episode in. To me, you lose credibility if you do that. But, I have no idea what the average audience for these reviews thinks or feels.

Either way, I'm enjoying this show. So, fuck the haters.

Good on you for taking this whole thread pretty well all in all xD. I can't say I necessarily agree with your assessment of the show, but I don't need to and you don't need me to.

For me, I've literally been on nonstop 7 days a week 12 hour shifts for a month now... so having a nice relaxing CGDCT show is a huge relief and my view is probably a little skewed as a result. I've personally loved the production, the little sci fi elements thrown in to give the setting some life, and I really feel like you can tell the staff had a ton of fun putting the show together. From the nested school idea, to the dumb pun in the MC's name, to the perfect attendance award, etc. it just feels like they had fun putting it together. I think a good iyashikei more so has to do with the general vibe of the show, and this show gets that. Now, I personally think they need to focus more on CGDC DIY things than they have thus far, and less focus on introducing a new character every episode though. Let the characters sit and marinate instead of rushing in new ones.

I think in the past when MAL had downvotes, people would get trolled by bots spam downvoting their reviews and such (might be remembering wrong?) ... so maybe the "confusing" rating should be worth 0 points rather than negative? Also, they should show that one without needing to literally click a show more button. People deserve to see an accurate view of how the review was received. So yeah, make each one worth a different amount as said before, but with confusing emotes being worth zero or close to zero. Could work I suppose.

That is the beauty of opinions, each one of us assesses quality through different lenses. I love CGDCT and Iyashikei anime, which is why I consider that it has many tangibles (Which I still try to discover) that achieve greatness. For me, a CGDCT that doesn't do truly transformative work with its characters can't be good, but it can be entertaining and comfy. This anime is easy to the eyes and has an authentic visual identity, I wouldn't give it a four if I consider it worthless trash haha

I don't mind the other points the top review raised but not sure how the art is 'pretentious' in any way

A nice simple and modern art style but it's 'pretentious' just because it's a CGDCT? What lmao
Even if the art style is 'arty' (it isn't) how is that a bad thing?

I wish they'd bring back an input like the "unhelpful button".
The funny and creative button are meaningless. Confusing is arguably conflicting as well.
Nice, Love are good, but a Unhelpful button included would be great.

A lot of reviews are mediocre, or worse ridiculously negative with no redeeming quality because it's not reviewing anything, and just opinionated with hate.
Unfortunately very few to no reviews actually give great insight and explanation to properly introducing a story for what it is.

It's frustrating, because barely any reviews are actually helpful, and most are useless for how hateful or poorly constructed they are.
