Impactful and intense episode, and the direction is pretty good. Only nitpick is that the use of traditional characters within the animation itself is not consistent. Definitely loved it though.

idkw I like Yi City arc in animation more than drama, feel more impactful and touching even thou the pace is so fast.

I honestly hated this episode. I watched the episode with three of my friends who haven't read the novel and all of them said they were extremely confused and din't know what was going on. It was way too fast paced imo.

I hope the next episodes are better...

Completely agree. Without knowing what's in the novel, it's difficult to understand what's going on completely. I felt the same way when I watched S1 and S2, even gave a lower score because not getting the plot. Then read the novel, watched it again, then everything made sense.

I am pretty disappointed in this episode. It showed almost nothing of what happened to Qing despite her being a ghost and as a novel reader it was a scene I was honestly looking forward to seeing.

Could someone who read the novel say something more to it? Its on my PTR for a long time but I have a lot of it...and even when I did not read the novel I cried (confusing but touching)

As expected, they shortened the Yi City arc a lot, rearranged some scenes and cut out some details from the novel so it was not as emotionally impactful, and might be confusing for those who haven't read the novel. I thought the second half was not bad though, at least they got the main points in.

Also, I thought WWX watching XY then remembering his past life was a nice touch. LWJ pulling an umbrella out of nowhere was kind of funny to me but it was really sweet how he used it to cover WWX then WWX pushed his hand a little so that it'd cover LWJ more too.

WWX showed off more of his badass demonic cultivation, I'm always in awe when I see it. Donghua WWX is so powerful!

In novel it obviously was better (and longer), still at least they have got a point of whole arc so it wasn't bad in my opinion, even if story is a bit flattered. (or maybe it's just that after TPN2 I'm ok with every, even the most average adaptation) Seeing their story animated was something... Really big, and my heart wasn't exactly ready for this.

@Xealias Ah, I didn't think abt this, thx for remind

I can tell you what you want, just detail what exactly is it. (I think there should be way more clarity only if studio give this arc 1 or 2 more eps, now it really may be confusing - through at first it was confusing a little even in novel and I had to do schedule of events while reading to get everything with timeline properly :P)

@Zuclyn I think you should add a spoiler or remove the name, those who are only watching the donghua are not supposed to know who saved XY.

As an anime-only I loved the episode, the backstory could have been a bit longer and more developped (especially around the character of Song Zichen) but aside for that I think it was really well done and touching

I understand that it seems and feels rushed to a novel reader, but on the other hand I'm glad I didn't read the novel (yet) since I seem to be enjoying the anime more than the original readers

I mean, I am not a novel reader and the episode still made sense for me. Past plot points are not explicitly mentioned but are rather subtly implied, which would definitely introduce some difficulty towards full comprehension. Despite the story trying to make us care for characters introduced just last episode, I still feel that this is a satisfying arc that at least adequately explores some side characters.

Yeah I think this was disappointingly fast paced. Yi City arc is a masterpiece in the novel, because you get to see A-Qing, Xiao Xingchen and Xue Yang's daily lives with a very eerie build up to the upcoming tragedy. Xiao Xingchen's kindness and generosity is what makes Xue Yang's behavior erratic, on one hand he is moved by the candies he keeps bringing him, on the other hand the malice he has developed towards the world is what drives him.

I have to praise the animation and direction of this episode, the staff did their best with what they had. But my main quip is that it lacked the emotional punch of the novel because it was quite compact. But that's to be expected when they are supposed to adapt 50+ chapters in 13 episodes lol.

I wonder tho why can't they make the season 3 longer so they can stretch the Yi city better. The are having a big budget right ? So what is the problem here ? Can someone please enlighten me?

Ah, I'm so glad anime (or donghua) onlys are enjoying it! I thought you guys wouldn't like it because it was pretty confusing and rushed (at least according to my anime only friends), but I just realized you guys can't compare it to the amazing Yi city arc that was in the novel and that it's all new to you. Thanks to this comment I tried watching the episode once more, this time trying to forget everything about the novel and ngl I enjoyed it a lot more.

Damn, ngl this episode was a really big disappointment to me. Especially because the Xiao Xingchen - A-Qing - Xue Yang backstory is one of my favorite parts for the emotional punch & impact it had on me when I first saw it in the Chinese drama. The pacing was awful. I expected the flashback to take up a whole episode at the very least, but they crammed the entire thing into 15 minutes?!? There was next to no build-up to the climax. I was stone-faced the entire time. I didn't feel anything even when Song Lan got stabbed or Xiao Xingchen committed suicide. It definitely would've helped if it at least focused a little more on A-Qing's POV and her distrust and fear of Xue Yang.

...Well, rushed flashback aside, the fights were animated beautifully. Just gotta lower my expectations for the last 9 episodes due to the rushed pacing again. Wish it was more than 12 episodes.

Animation-wise: It was really beautiful and you clearly tell they went all out for the final season

Plot-wise: Haven't read the novel yet so the Yi-city arc was confusing and a lot of information seems to have been left out, so i ended up reading summaries to understand the arc

I do have to agree with the collective, this episode was a bit confusing. From what I got from watching this, was that Xue Yang did take advantage of XXC to lure Taoist Song, but in the process of that, Xue Yang did develop affection for XXC. Also there must be alot of other drama behind the scenes with that. Also from what I understood, Xue Yang massacred that clan because of personal reasons and for what they did to XXC.

I'm just sad they didn't include the part where Wei Wuxian boasts that obviously Wen Ning would win over Song Lan. Was that supposed to be last episode or this one ๐Ÿค” Either way I loved that line because it solidified just how OP Wen Ning as a fierce corpse is and the confidence Wei Wuxian has in him.

As for the entire Yi City arc it was a bit rushed but it wasn't too bad if you've read the novel. Donghua onlys probably got confused tho. Honestly I would've preferred though if one more episode was dedicated to it to flesh out just how close the relationship grew to be between A-Qing, Xiao Xingchen and Xue Yang was. They didn't even show Xue Yang killing A-Qing.

Also for anyone curious what Xue Yang did to Chang Ping's family was much worse. He didn't just kill them, he preformed lingchi on them too (I think it wasn't just on Chang Ping but his family too.) So yeah Xue Yang didn't play at all with his revenge. He was ruthless xD

The animation was so beautiful. I think this would have been so much more impactful if they'd slowed it down a bit to let us process the story.

Xue Yang's story still makes me sad. He was evil and unforgivable, but when he was finally shown some love, he destroyed it himself because he didn't know how to treasure it.

I have watched the drama version of this, and I am still bad with the characters' names. So many of them sound alike, and I have a hard time remembering them.

What an episode! I dont know what was confusing about it tbh. It made complete sense not to mention the story was pretty heart breaking at the same time as well considering how XY tries to revive xxc someone who showed him kindness which he didnt expect not to mention how XXC kills his own friend by being manipulated..and then commits suicide.A qing death was ofscreen and by the looks of XY killed her i think.and the animation is gorgoes!!The best this season imo not to mention That demonic cultivation of wei wuxian!!! I love the pace as well but only as an anime only. SO many things happen at the same time that procsessing them is a form of enjoyment on its on tbh. (THough i can understand why novel readers might be disappointed, as an anime only i was pretty amazed!!)

same thoughts here. Although imo MDZS was always confusing. I now know their names but it took me 3 times to re watch the first and second season to understand who everyone is because of all their other names. Probaby this season will take me 3 times as well to understand it clearly.

Everyone says this arc was rushed, but that was still a damn good episode. I was able to understand the relationships between the characters in the flashback very well despite the short time period and get the gist of what was going on. I never know what is entirely going on in this series, so the fact that this acr was rushed affected me very little. The art, animation, and OST carry me through as they always do.

It usually takes me XY's death till I break into tears, but those domestic bits of the Yi City trio just killed my poor heart. Happy XXC, XY and A-Qing just warms my heart <3

They rushed trough the core of Yi City which is unfortunate even if their time planning was good. They fit some pieces rather well and the fact that LWJ and WWX do empathy together doesn't require WWX to explain anything. It's still unfortunate that donghua-only readers can't experience this emotional bomb.

I seriously recommend this one arc for solo reading. It's not very long yet it's so nice to read. I feel like XY's range of emotions and determination to bring back XXC wasn't that well covered. Nor the serious found family part of it.

But honestly, I really liked what they did even if it was rushed. We must understand that donghua team was limited to 12 episodes (last season was even worse!). I'm really glad we have the R-17 rating again. You can really feel the rating change.

I was very excited for Yi City Arc so it's quite disappointing to see it squished into 2 episodes. It didn't have even a tenth of the emotional impact as it did for me with the novel. A Qing seemed like such a minor character here, and overall, the relationship between the three (XXC, XY, A Qing) was really glossed over. However, I was still able to feel sad for them with the brief montage at the end of the episode. It's t truly a twisted and tragic story. Despite how I felt about the episode, I'm glad some anime-onlys were able to enjoy it!

So far, they seem to really focus on the action with little build up, but I think I may have felt the same way about second season as well. I wonder if I'd feel the same way if I go back to watch the first season, having read the novel after watching first season. Not complaining about the action of course, it was way more epic to see WWX manipulate the dolls in animation than whatever I was able to conjure up with my own imagination :'D

I'm impressed with how they did justice to this convoluted arc, despite trimming a lot of content from the novel. They are also showing blood and gore this time, unlike in the censored S2! The studio put real effort into character animation in this episode.

Knowing that the final season would only be 12 episodes, I already expected them to cut a lot of stuff from the novel, but I never really thought that Yi city arc would be this short. There were so many scenes I would have love to see animated like more interaction between xue yang and xingchen or more scenes focusing on a qing and many more.

Nevertheless, this arc was still pretty good in the donghua. Wei Wuxian's display of demonic cultivation was really awesome and badass. Xiao xingchen's realization that he had killed live people, as well as Song Lan, made me feel horrible. Even though I knew Xue Yang is to blame, seeing him in such a desperate state at the end made me feel bad for him. Their end was really tragic, it would have been much more impactful and emotional if they showed more interaction between them.

I really liked the episode, especially the umbrella scene. It was really sweet how Lan Zhan used the umbrella to cover all of Wei Ying but Wei Ying tilted it so that they could each be covered. It was really good.
Unfortunately, the revelation about XX, SL, XY, and AQing wasn't as good as the novel but I still liked it a lot.
