There's only one season (The original Madoka Magica) or the first two recap movies that you need to watch before this. Basically it's just 12 episodes ( < 6 hours) or 4 hours of movie time. So yeah you need to watch the show or the two movies. You can watch third movie but it's not necessary.

Also watching your Anime List and seeing our affinity, I'm sure you'll love Madoka Magica.

1. Yes, I doubt they're going to explain the nuances of how everything works since they expect either fans of the game or the previous anime to be their main audience.
2. It's likely to have huge spoilers for the previous anime so it wouldn't be optimal to watch Magia Record first anyway.
3. There's only one "season" you'd need to watch (I'd go for the TV version instead of the first two movies, it's not worth missing out on the content the movies cut out for your first watch). I don't imagine you'd need to see the 3rd movie (which takes place after the main anime) before Magia Record.

I don't get why you'd watch 24 episodes of a gatcha game spin-off adaptation of something before 12 episodes of the thing itself.

Why bother watching smartphone shit ad instead of original, that is considered best anime of this decade by many?

Just why?
Watch really great 2011 series before this mobile game adaptation and don't ruin your first impression about Madoka universe

I think you should at least watch the original series and the third movie (the first two are recaps), so you will avoid any confusion. I doubt this new series will explain the basics of mythology, the nature of contracts and how the magical girls work. It may also spoil some plot-twist of the original series.

Whether de Magia Record anime will be "smartphone shit ad" is something we don't know yet. I bet Shaft is about to prove you wrong.

Thank you. I think the first series does look good and have been meaning to watch it for a while now. Since it's saying this is a side story I was just wondering if had to watch it before this.

I don’t know much about the game but considering it’s a loose spin off you don’t have to have seen the original series or rebellion to watch this. Although I’d recommend you watch it, there will probably be some scenes about witches, magical girls and other things present in the show that will be expected to be known which get explained in the original series. The original series is also great so you should give it a try with it only being 12 episodes.

Hey, I was wondering the same thing

Is this anime just some kind of Madoka Magica spinoff or is it cannon ?

I did watch Madoka Magica but didn't watch the 3rd movie yet, so can I watch this anime without feeling lost ?

It’s a spinoff. I’ve heard that it might be loosely tied to the original anime but I haven’t played the game so I can’t say for certain. Considering how rebellion ended and the general story of it I’m almost certain that you don’t need to watch it in order to watch Magia Record.

1. Why does it even matter that the anime is smartphone shit? the original question was that if the person can watch this one without watching the original series.

2. To answer the OP's question tho:

It's a spin-off but apparently it loosely ties to the original. On one hand it'd be better to watch the original to get some form of context of how the world works. On the other hand, you don't really need to since this is it's own thing from what I recall here.

Because smartphone shit adaptations are 90% garbage and like 50% if they are comedies. Can you even name good titles beside Shigeki no Bahamut?

It is a spin off but you should watch the original anyway, and no you do not need to watch rebellion, this story takes place in an entirely separate timeline from the original timelines.

Fate Babylonia has been a pretty fun adapt to watch and its from a smart phone game, the Idolmaster is fairly fun as well.

- Last Period (from what I've remembered)
- 18if
- Fate/Grand Order (the OVA, have not seen the TV series yet)
- Idolmaster (the original)
- Kemono Friends
- Granblue Fantasy the Animation

I mean to be fair the reason why some game adaption tend to suck is because some games don't have much of a story to work with. More so leaning towards gacha and stuff, so to make a cohesive story in a short time span as well as executing it well whether it'd be for entertainment purposes or just telling a narrative becomes a little bit hard admittedly.

Highly doubt it can be applied for MagiReco, at least at it's current moment by the time I write this.

I wouldn't could Kemono Friends - the anime was always set in a different time period and the game was cancelled before the show premiered, so the tie is pretty irrelevant(much like Uma Musume, whose game still hasn't released).
