To think that fat chunk of kappa was an ikemen prince.

Anyways, I'm glad to see the otters and to see that Haruka survived. I'm also happy that there was no regurgitated transformation scenes for both parties. It's nice to see the Kappa boys struggle and show emotion in their cute Kappa forms.

Woah things are getting dark right here, totally didn't expect that. And we get to see more of the sexy gay cops, tho, that post-credit scene surprised me, did that happened in the past? 'cause i saw all the running kappas so i thought it happened back in the kappa vs otter war.

Another great episode, this show just keeps getting better and better

When it veers off the formulaic, it finally becomes amazing.
Shipping & shredding kid boxes flashbacks to Penguindrum. Nice trio kappa soccer styled save of Haruka.
Prince gets some much needed kingdom vs Otters backstory.
The smell theme the last 2 episodes was quite strong, from the weird criminal, to sachet theft, Haruka holding Kazuki's sachet, the sachet with smell of mc & his mom, so many connections.
Reo's food bag says ningyouyaki (doll cake), while he laments Mabu became an emotionless/desire-less "doll" (after Prince's darkness attack).

I know this director is known for his crazy anime so I wasn't sure if Haruka was really going to die or not. The moment the cop went to him my heart stopped honestly. When Haruka fell out of the box but still fell for the shredder it hit me that despite all three kicking Kappa Prince like a soccer ball and the golden duo being back in that moment to symbolize Kazu going back to his old self, that maybe he would realize it was him who didn't allow himself to connect but it would be too late. In fact before that I even thought the story may involve Kazu killing himself to pay back Haruka and resolve himself from his guilt and the rest of the series may be the other characters dealing with his loss and remembering him vaguely. What would follow would probably be the Kappa Prince helping bring him back. However, it actually took the most traditionally predictable route and because of my expectations that it wouldn't it ended up being the most surprising outcome to me.

The other thing to mention is how much everyone fought for each other. Enta and Kuji instantly tried to help Kazu no matter what, leaving themselves so he could continue, and in the end both saved him and we're scared for the loss of him and Haruka. Even the Kappa Prince who was quick to tell Kazu how to sacrifice himself took damage willingly to save Haruka. And somehow in the end there the sachet zombie died. Either way, Enta was always willing to do whatever it took for Kazu and now Kazu knows how much Haruka misses him because of Enta's words. Kuji however was slower to warming up but when push came to shove he did everything he could. Cool...

Some things to note:
  • Today's lucky dish was a sachet because the zombie who desired them wasn't beaten.
  • Kappa Prince stated he was one of the last kappa's as the Kappa kingdom was destroyed by otters as otters fought the kappa's for their desire energy. The prince may be shocked to know Sara is a kappa which can turn into a human as she pleases. Further, since I read the synopsis of the manga I know
  • Lastly, the otters find what seem to be deep desires and extract them for the desire energy turning these people into zombies, however, if that so called desire is love it's useless to them and they shred love like garbage. They even said at the end as well as numerous other times that 'the future exists only for those who can connect their desires', and the prince said 'when they lose their desire they become incapable of connecting with anyone else' and then disappear as if they never existed because of that. That circle that connects makes up the world and they no longer fit in it. Which perplexes me because Haruka clearly wants to connect with Kazu out of love and not desire, it made it clear that he had love and not desire for Kazu yet their will to connect and be there for each other is genuine even if conflicted at times. I'm thinking this will be a big thematic point in the story going forward.
Ultimately I'm enjoying the anime but I feel conflicted on it. I can write a ton, tear up twice an episode, and have fun but as soon as its over it's just out of my mind. I hope it grows of me the more I watch. Nothing hits me as something I love I guess.

P.S. I love the hard cut to credits. It's stylish. Kazu genuinely opened up and thanked them!

More like a resolution episode to reflect back on the last one and settle things up. It looks like the show will only start to take shape from now on that the imperial otters have picked up on the Kero kappa.

Incredible how a misunderstanding could lead to such sad tragedy.

That said, I'm really glad Kazuki and co. could save Haruka. Now, I hope things can go back to normal between them.

Intriguing post credits scene, by the way

Lol, Kero moments are just .. brilliant to have! Pole dance~ xD.

Another great episode, Kazuki is back but the Otters appears to have found their main aim, that being Kero (in soccer form). I wonder if the Otters went easy on Kazuki and co before believing that Kero would accidentally show up once. But, that aside, Hazuki is a really caring brother and it’s great to see they’ve managed to save him in time. No explanation on the mysterious Sara just yet (and Kuji is slowly catching up to the far-too-reliable daily fortunes or whatever that is) but some vital info about the past of Otters and Kappas. And now, it’s time for the humans! Welp, too bad most humans have some sense of ‘love’ (figuratively speaking) so they’ll prove to be challenging just like the duo of Haruka and Kazuki. Sad that the earlier victims are swiftly removed from existence though, that’s harsh and definitely worse than death as Enta correctly pointed out. Speaking of Enta, the Golden Duo is back so this must’ve been a great episode for him lol. Hazuki and Kazuki’s (real) mother meeting there was quite heart-rending too and looks like the mother isn’t too bad a person after all (she regrets it at the very least, I suppose).

Looking forward to what’s in store for me next! I’ve a feeling we’ll be seeing Kero getting kidnapped or so very soon...

Another incredible episode, Ikuhara never looses his grip. I really enjoyed the internal workings of the factory, which, of course, is symboic to a large extent. I also remembered just how obsessed Ikuhara is with boxes, and they practically always represent something bad (see Penguindrum, Yuri Kuma, and now Sarazanmai) - storing something precious in its pure form, untouched; in case of Sarazanmai - hiding your desire. I also must say that

And the whole desire/love dichotomy gives me Yuri Kuma flashbacks.

Also the pupper cakes in Sara's program and in Reo's package made me think about her connection to the otters again, even though she's a kappa. This part of the folklore can be really useful here:
In the Ishikawa and Kochi Prefectures, they are said to be a type of kappa, and there are stories told about how they engage in sumo with otters. In places like the Hokuriku region, Kii, and Shikoku, the otters are seen as a type of kappa. In the Kagakushū, a dictionary from the Muromachi period, an otter that grew old becomes a kappa

Are otters and kappa practically the same? They were even shown enjoying sumo (kappa hobby) together.

The phrase "Don't give up on your desire" really reminded me of Yuri Kuma...again. And that's great.

Production notes:

Nice quote from the article above, putting to words what I've been feeling this whole time:
Sarazanmai has coded desire to water imagery. What does that mean? Water’s notoriously all over the stock footage; weaponized during the singing, exploding all over after the kappa zombies are defeated, and again dominating the screen during the connection sequence. Perhaps most importantly, it appears in key moments during the cryptic Reo and Mabu dance. Haruka is now the living proof that when the otter machinery tries to process love it gets rejected by the system, but on a nearly weekly basis we see what happens when desire gets dropped into it: a huge water splash, forming a crown – perhaps a reference to Black Keppi’s royalty status. And speaking of the d-d-d-darkness devil himself, we saw him burst out in a desire malfunction within a room flowing with water. In the Reo and Mabu sequence, it’s the one cut with Black Keppi in the background that’s entirely underwater as well.

There're also a lot of questions posed by the whole otter-kappa backstory. I really loved the parodied paintings/mosaics (especially the one with Alexander the Great being replaced with a kappa haha), giant Godzilla-like otter and all that. Why does the desire machine have "kuro keppi system"? Was the prince in the tower actually Keppi? Is he the same as dark (kuro) keppi? Are Reo and Mabu on the quest to save Mabu? If so, how does Keppi and his powers fit into that? Really exciting!

I also feel like apart from the desire psychoanalysis and kappa/otter folklore there's an underlying anti-consumerist message (which is still tied to the whore desire thing, I guess). It helps to keep that in mind. Also note how love gets shredded into dust. It may be relevant later.

Damn I didn't thought we get a pretty decent story arc in this fever dream. I still have no idea what is going on most of the time, but some stuff makes sense and I can put more and more together. Still unsure how I will rate this anime, probably something between 7-8 in the end. It's really enjoyable, but most of the time it's just super weird, but in a good way. I don't know why many people are so grossed out by this anime, it's only rated pg13 and I saw much much more weirder stuff coming from Japan. The only part I really dislike are those 2 songs repeating in each episodes with the same animation.
