I forgot to post this when Konaka replied to my tweet back in January, and nobody seemed to notice the tweet (big anime news sites or anitubers)

https://twitter.com/yamaki_nyx/status/1080629084034523136

So thank and grovel at my feet ye peasants.

Jk, I'm just glad this project is alive and kicking, and they are no longer having issues.

Nope. But if they say it’s on a normal production course I’d say 2-3 years at most. Unless it never happens at all 🤷🏽‍♀️🤷🏽‍♀️

Okay, this is actually hype. Now they just need to find a good director for it and secure a reasonably healthy production.

the biggest question is, who would be the new director? so far, only Mamoru Oshii who has similar vibe with Kyuutaro Nakamura in directing Sci-fi/Cyberpunk/Philosophical anime. i mean, it would be funny if Despera turns out to be like Girls' Last Tour anime

I'm optimistic, but sceptical about Despera. It sucks that Ryutaro Nakamura died, though the fact that his death has thrown production into a seven-year development hell doesn't make it seem like the project had much of an idea to begin with.

That being said, I sincerely hope that it is one day completed. So much ABe art would go to waste if it wasn't, and that's a crime.

On February 20 of this year, Konaka said on Twitter that Despera is still not dead, so far.

https://mobile.twitter.com/yamaki_nyx/status/1230535013583577089

I'm not keeping my hopes up too much but the possibility is still here, which is nice lmao.

I’m keeping my hopes up too! If Despera is indeed alive then it’ll be just what modern anime needs. A huge slap in the face. The writing and art direction in modern anime is nothing close to the thought provoking writing and awe inspiring visuals Lain and Texhnolyze gave.
I’m glad there are a few people that know what Despera is and want it to come out as badly as I do.

I occasionally come back to this thread to see any new posts and it is very reassuring to still see news on this project. I’m glad it hasn’t been abandoned JUST yet.

Don't rule out a release, but I think you'll have to play the waiting game.

Abe is currently starting to do weekly reports accross FANBOX, Patreon, and CREATIA. (Note that most if not all posts are expected to be focused on personal work and not commercial work.)

While nothing directly has been mentioned of Despera as of recent, He does mention this in a post linked here (2/10/21)
https://www.patreon.com/posts/what-im-thinking-47363231

"Especially for the past year or so, events related to douujinshi have been canceled due to Corona, and there is no place for douujinshi to create freely for me, so it's a meaningless sketch."

This quote can be interpreted how you would like as it doesn't directly name Despera.

I still hold hope for Despera but as mentioned in this thread, patience is needed, as Corona has surely delayed any work by at least a year, easily more.

It is nice to see him stay consistent in his craft and look forward to his work.

*****New Info*****

Writer Chiaki J. Konaka provided an update on Twitter linked below

https://mobile.twitter.com/yamaki_nyx/status/1374396844835364868

Twitter Statement Transcript;

"I'm sorry that I haven't been able to report on the progress of "Desupera". Due to the pandemic, the project was suspended for a year and a few months. I've been away from Twitter for another reason, though."

"The production funding scheme is 80% completed. The core staff also did a lot of work up until a year ago. It's just been restarted, so some kind of announcement won't be made until 2022. I understand. It's a long way off."

"But we, @abfly and others been working on this project for over 18 years now. We're still trying to do it, so please be patient with us."

4 months old but posting for archival purposes;

During Club Cyberia Wired season:01 Layer:07 on April 7, 2021, Chiaki J. Konaka had revealed in his interview that most of the original plot pitched in 2008 has been reworked giving Despera a completely different setting and story.

Partial translations from interview provided by Shiru;

"I'm really sorry but I can't talk about Despera right now. I am working with a producer I haven't worked with before. The Despera project started in 2003 and it was cancelled around 2011 but it's still ongoing and I don't think its going anywhere. Work on Despera will continue from this summer. I did Lain and Texhnolyze, and I really want to make Despera because its a different story."
